This is actually a personal story, and it will probably answer your question.

So when I was 3-4 years old, my parents got divorced. I was split between two families, and I was just really upset most of the time.

Now, Fairy Tail was the first anime I actually watched all the way through, besides the final season of course.

However, when I watched it, I felt like I actually belonged there. Even though I didn't belong there, I felt like everyone in the anime was my family. Since my family got separated, I just needed something to make me feel like I was in a family again. And Fairy Tail did that.

I know that sounds kind of stupid, but that's what most anime does for me. It's an escape from reality and it lets me think of what life could be, mainly to have a family that is still together.
