Overtures and Sonnets

"Oh look who's here, the wicked witch of the north-west" George grinned then cast his eyes back down to his more interesting comic book. "Did England get sick of you and toss you over 'ere then?"

"Nasty boy. I should paddle your behind but I haven't the stomach to look at your lilly white ar-"

"Alright alright, play nice you two!" John sat Evie on George's lap conveniently keeping George otherwise engaged. "Look after wee miss" George nodded and sat the comic book aside from Evie's little clamoring hands.

"Hello luv" Richy kissed Lou's cheek and fiddled with her hair as Paul entered the room and zoomed into position near Louise as well. She was different like this and they all were more than intrigued to the changes she had undergone. Richy continued complimenting Lou "Very nice Louise. Very nice indeed. Might have to get meself one"

"Meself one what?" Lou enquired.

"A blonde beauty like you of course"

"Awwww Richy you're so cute" Lou kissed his cheek in return just as John sidled back in the room to drop into an overstuffed armchair.

"That'll be enough of that you two .... how many bloody kisses has it been Louise? Hmmm" John cocked his head to look at Evie pulling Georges nose, no way she was going back to sleep this side of dawn.

"Oh, I don't know John, I don't keep count. Richy? It's got to be in the thousands now, don't you agree"

"Oh must be. At least two hundred and thirty-nine thousand" Richy hugged Lou to him as they paraded round the room. Dropping her arm, Ringo took another kiss "two hundred, thirty-nine thousand and one!! Hey hey!"

"Richy ..... I need a word with you 'bout looking at Lou's breasts earlier" John grumbled looking up at Lou, poking his tongue out.

"Hang on there, son. I said and I quote 'I didn't look at them, at all' John" Richy held his hands up mock jabbing the air for a fight. "....Though her dress did offer the chance to view some mighty pretty curves"

"Here, Here!" Paul cheered then ducked his head, bugger that was a bit too jovial .... I must stop my mouth running off he tittered to himself. Jane wasn't near as busty as Louise was now. Paul also noticed Jane wasn't about again as he watched Louise smile prettily at Richy. Now the baby had made changes to Lou's body, she had certainly blossomed, like a soft budding ros- .

John stood up straightening his back, cracking his knuckles in readiness, Richy ducked his head under his armpit to 'hide'.

"Louise" Paul was fumbling about with Louise's hair as she stood holding Richy's hand swinging it happily.

"Yes Paulie"

"I bloody love you brunette but I am rather taken with this colour it's absolutely ravishing on you, do a little twirl for us yeah?"

"Course Paul anything for another compliment or three" Lou grinned happily. John had obviously liked her hair when he grasped it in his hands as he loved her earlier. Lou sighed contentedly, as she twirled whimsically. Her hair, in soft waves, swinging gracefully along.

"Cor Lou, I'm with Rich, need to get me some-" Paul was interrupted,  his mind thrown off track as he stared at Louise, red dress and locks floating free, spinning tantalisingly slow.

"Right you lot get your bloody instruments, stop fanging for Louise and let's sing the ditty I finished up for my wife. You do remember her, don't you? She's the one you're all bloody ogling. Come on my red riding blonde sit right here, George give Eve back to her mummy" John herded the troops, if it wasn't for him they'd all go to pot for sure.

"Do I 'ave to .... Evie's all warm and snuggly" George stood up plonking Eve gently on her mother's lap, rubbing a thumb over her chin (Bubs chin not Louises', that would just be gross, that) "Look after me niece, you. No incantations while she sits there all cute and stuff on yer lap"

"I'll try not to Georgie, I do have my hands full so it would be hard, perhaps I'll just wiggle me nose and the spell will just transpire turning you into a more pleasant creature .... like a monkey"

"Oh funny ho ho as if wiggling your nose would be able to cast a spell. Now if you clicked your fingers that would be more likely scenario to create witchcraft"

"Go away George"

"Yes Louise, I will go far, far away from you. Bloody old hag you are. Oh, and by the way, I was definitely not one of the leering leerers ogling and leering leerily at you"

"Thank Christ for that. I would have had to chuck you off the Eiffel tower and explain your absence at Christmas to Ma" Louise sniggered.

"Ma would have noticed before Christmas you hag"

"You think?" Louise questioned, raising an eyebrow, then she watched George nibbling his lip with worry that his mother wouldn't even miss his presence. Louise grinned merrily, her job was done.

"Would you two stop messing about with your sibling rivalry. It's gotten old very fast, it has" Paul huffed as he picked up his acoustic guitar. "And George don't call our Lou a 'bloody old nag' she's young and pretty, she is" Paul blessed Lou a wink.

"Hag I said hag, Paul .... though na-" George gave up, they weren't listening anymore. Bloody typical, that is, isn't it. Ignore the George again.

"Thanks Paul, you always know what to say to make me happy" Lou's face lit up. Paul was surely the one to make her shine when he complimented. John of course did too but Paul could turn clouds to sunshine with anyone, she just happened to be in the spotlight presently.

"No problem Louise luv" Paul ran another sharp eye over the bird that drove them all crazy earlier in the evening, she was shimmering from lovemaking that was for sure "Looking very fine too may I say"

"Paul" John warned McPhilanderer with a deep growl "Com' on you lot, move your rear ends"

John gathered his lads together and finally they were set.

If I fell

If I fell in love with you

Would you promise to be true

And help me understand

Cos I've been in love before

And I found that love was more

Than just holding hands

If I give my heart to you

I must be sure

From the very start

That you would love me more than her

If I trust in you oh please

Don't run and hide

If I love you too oh please

Don't hurt my pride like her

Cos I couldn't stand the pain

And I would be sad if our new love was in vain

So I hope you see that I

Would love to love you

And that she will cry

When she learns we are two

Cos I couldn't stand the pain

And I would be sad if our new love was in vain

So I hope you see that I

Would love to love you

And that she will cry

When she learns we are two

If I fell in love with you

"Like it?" John beamed as Lou hugged Evie close, Lou nodded then tapped her chin in question. "What? What is it luv?"

Who is she?"

"She who Lou?" Paul laughed at the little rhyme.

"In the song"

"Oh that. That's just us filling up the song, poetic licence that. It's no one luv .... Promise. I wrote it at 'ome while you two were asleep" John grinned flicking open his exercise book, turning to Paul "Let's run through this one too, see what our Bardot thinks"

"But you must have been seeing someone to write it like that" Lou pouted and glared at John making him gulp. Lou wasn't too worried but what if he had seen someone before he was absolutely sure of her, what if there was one last hurrah or she was grumpy one day and he had had enough of her. Lou frowned and lowered her eyes. Over- thinking the whole scenario once again.

John was on his haunches, fingers lifting her chin "Louise ...." John waited for her to bring her eyes up, she had her fingers so tightly held together round Evie. Not hurting the little one, just clasped together in a worrisome way. "Ma-belle, there is no one else that can make me write like you. You breathe and I want to write overtures and sonnets and poetry, you make me want to raise a smile to your lips, every day in every way" John wiggled his eyebrows naughtily at the last few words but meant every word, she had intoxicated him and he loved her as best as he could.

Louie pecked his lips, eyes glistening, smile hovering as his words filtered into her. She let go of her own hand and pulled him to her by his collar, deepening the kiss with fire then pushed him backwards so he nearly stumbled like an inept teenager at her feet. John grinned and went back for more as George made gagging sounds as he tuned his guitar.

"Ok you two... next ditty John. Now who's dallying" Paul smiled at Louise as she rubbed her swollen raspberry tinted lips gently, almost massaging them, almost ...... fuck I'm rising in the nether regions. Think of Winston Churchill, ya nutter, down boy.

Paul ripped his head down to look at the tiny scratch on the Hofner, picking at it in hopeless attempt to divert his brain. Making a face Paul looked up, Lou cocked her head and grinned at him knowingly, then rolled her eyes.

"We haven't all the words yet so we'll run through the backing, yeah" John glanced up and explained to Louise as the boys adjusted their instruments, trousers and strings.

He'd felt the tension spike and had seen Paul bumbling like a school boy with a crush on his teacher. McBumble wanted Lou again, but hopefully it was an unrequited lust, just a Bardot sized bump in the road. John looked at Louise, she smiled encouragement at him not Paulie. But that wouldn't stop her pushing his buttons that was a certainty, John thought.

Louise picked up Evie's hands and clapped them for her "What are some of the words then?"

John offered the book to Paul.

Paul tapped his chin then his voice chimed through the room. The words sweet, high and beautiful "Well the first verse goes:

I'll buy you diamonds ring my girl

If it makes you feel alright

I'll get you anything my girl

If it makes you feel alright

'Cause I don't care too much for money

Money can't buy me love

"It's a great sound catchy, uplifting, quick .... Arrr, The girls bit- a bit dodgy though" Louise watched John slap his leg in agreement.

"Told you Paul, it doesn't sit right does it" John leaned over and Louise could see him humming the words to himself "Woman" Lou shook her head no and John laughed "I am NOT putting man" Lou had a giggle while Paul rolled his eyes, as he looked over John's shoulder.

"Sooo if none of those, what then?" Paul questioned Louise, she was mulling over the lyrics in the upside down exercise book in front of her. "Just like the Cavern days asking Lou for a word or two, we are" Paul reminisced, Lou smiled up at Paul and John. Loving the lot of them was so easy, so right, they belonged in her heart always, even the monkey.

"It's a bit weird cause it's not a lover but... friend" Louise bit the inside of her cheek as Evie smacked the exercise book that John was lifting closer to his face.

"Com' on, lets give it a whirl then. When has Lou ever steered us wrong" Paul patted Johns arm and swung the guitar round his shoulder.

I'll buy you diamonds ring my friend

If it makes you feel alright

I'll get you anything my friend

If it makes you feel alright

'Cause I don't care too much for money

Money can't buy me love

"It's a bit weird not being girl or woman but it sounds alrigh" George sang through the verse again as they listened.

"Rest will slip in easy now, no doubt" John smiled dropping the book open to the next page "One more then looks like Evie will be beddy byes" He nodded his head at Evie sucking two fingers.

"Oh yeah this is going together well Lou. Wrote it last night right here at the coffee table before John conked out on us! Give us your critical assessment, luv" Paul grinned at John, shrugging his shoulders when John glared at him. Lou rubbed his knee gently to let him know it was alright. (Johns knee not Paul's. John would not have been happy if she'd done that!)

George started singing which was a treat for Louise. She didn't tell him but his voice was really nice. The lyrics were perfect, an innocent song of love for our young George.

A/N: "I'm Happy Just To Dance With You" live at the BBC a rare delivery for radio program 'From Us To You'. George makes a few vocal bloopers. Recorded 17th July'64. Broadcast on Aug 3rd'64.  (Video backing vocal from AHDN of course.)

"George, you fluffed the lines again! I swear you aren't paying attention to what you're doing, at all" John grumbled.

"I thought it sounded lovely John. For a raw run through" Lou sincerely stated, turning to George she continued "Was beautiful Georgie, suits your voice so well, luv" Lou was rewarded with a humungous blush as George grinned proudly at her rare compliment.

Louise yawned and they realised another night was almost through, carrying Evie and hugging Louise to his side John led them back to Lou's, and now his, room. Kissing the top of Evie's head and Lou's cheeks repeatedly as they stood in the elevator quietly and as he walked them down the hall, he was happy, really happy.....

And sober, don't forget, sober.
