NETHERLANDS

In the Netherlands more #cyclists are killed in traffic than people in cars. Cars are getting safer and safer - for their drivers and passengers. But what about other road users? Ten tips for safer cycling  by Dutch @Fietsersbond. Thread 1/11

2/11 Reduce maximum speeds for cars! 75% of cyclists killed in traffic are a result of car crashes. Reduce max speeds to 30 km/h in cities, towns and villages. Don't forget rural roads. Combine with automatic speed assistance in new cars.

3/11 Better cycling infrastructure. Bad infra causes many single crashes. Cycle paths/lanes need to be forgiving. They must be wide enough, without unnecessary obstacles. Avoid high kerbs and use clear road markings.

4/11 Provide separate road space. Heavy motrorised traffic and vulnerable cyclists don't mix well. Main cycling routes need to be separated from car routes. Invest in tunnels, bridges and cycle highways.

5/11 Fewer cars. Most traffic victims are caused by crashes involving cars. Cars should be discouraged  from entering areas with many cyclists and pedestrians. Cars should be banned around schools, so children can cycle to school safely.
