Chapter 1- Summer

I lifted my heavy eyes to see the sun shining through my window in my room. I shifted to my left side and squinted at my alarm clock. The blue numbers read 12:02. "First day of summer," I mumbled to myself. I was so happy that I could finally sleep in. Waking up at 6 o'clock every morning for school was not the most fun thing to do.

After 5 minutes of thinking, I finally got up. Stretching, I slowly made my way to my big window. I looked outside to see the trees moving with the wind and beautiful black birds flying in the sky. Little kids were laughing as they ran around the block with their mothers. I love summer. I love the sun.

Opening my drawer, I pulled out a back floral dress. I took off my pajama gown, and slipped in my dress. I walked over to my long vertical mirror, and smiled at my reflection. I rubbed down the bottom of my dress, and twirled around until I felt dizzy. I walked over, wobbling, to my record player. I pulled the album "Please Please Me" by The Beatles out of the album cover. I gently set the record on the record player. I moved the needle slowly on the record, trying not to scratch it. It suddenly blasted 'I Saw Her Standing There" and I danced all around the room. I always liked to imagine The Beatles singing that song to me. Knowing that I'm 17 and all.

After I finished the album, I ran down stairs. I skipped the last few steps, and jumped to the kitchen. "Oh, good morning, love." my mother said as I hugged her from behind, "You scared my to death!" I laughed and replied "I'm sorry mother, I'm just in a great mood this morning." My mother smiled, and continued to cook breakfast. She's always been a great cook. That's one of the reason's I love living with her more than my dad. My father never cooked, he just got us junk food all the time. That doesn't mean that I don't love him, but I just don't miss him. My mother and my father always fought. Even over the most stupid things. Maybe that's why my mother left him.

I walked over to our little table in the dining room. This table has been here since I could remember. It was brown, glossy wood with a white table cloth. It was even topped with beautiful red roses in a china vase. I pulled out one of the chairs and made myself comfortable. My mom walked over to me with a plate of scrambled eggs with buttered toast. Mmmm.

She set the black plate right in front of me. "So what do you plan on doing today?" she said with excitement. I grabbed my fork and took a bite of my eggs. "Probably going to the library," I swallowed my food, "And the local thrift store." My mom gave me a confused look. "The thrift store? Why do you want to go there?" I looked down. "Well-uh, I-I saw a really cute dress there," I lied,"Yeah, it's super adorable." My mother raised her eyebrow. "Well, okay," she said, knowing that I sounded unsure,"Be good. I'm going to work now." She kissed my forehead. "I will." I said with a smile.
