-Rant-
Yes I know I have a rant/bio book, but this seems like a more fitting place for this.
Firstly sorry it's 3 a.m and I'm annoyed, so I doubt this makes sense, but I need to get this out. So yeah sorry for this mess.
So I've been reading this book on the 27 club and it features bio's of Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, etc.
I expected a fun and interesting read, but what did I get? I nearly threw the book at the wall out of anger.
I know Brian could be an asshole, I'm not delusional okay?
BUT THAT'S NO REASON TO MAKE HIM OUT TO BE A HUGE PATHETIC BASTARD, ESPECIALLY NOT WHEN HALF OF THE THINGS CLAIMED CAN EASILY BE DISPROVED BY INTERVIEWS BY DIFFERENT PEOPLE.
For example the book stated Brian had no male friends whatsoever and women only liked him because they wanted to sleep with him.
EXCUSE ME???
I don't even have to think long to name at least 3 people that were friends with him (excluding the Stones ofc) and which can be easily proved.
George Harrison:
"I always used to see Brian in the clubs and hang out with him. In the mid-Sixties he used to come out to my house - particularly when he'd got 'the fear', when he'd mixed too many weird things together. I'd hear his voice shouting to me from out in the garden: 'George, George...' I'd let him in - he was a good mate. He would always come round to my house in the sitar period. We talked about 'Paint It Black' and he picked up my sitar and tried to play it - and the next thing was he did that track.
We had a lot in common, when I think about it. I think he related to me a lot, and I liked him. Some people didn't have time for him, but I thought he was one of the most interesting ones."
OBVIOUSLY GEORGE DIDN'T LIKE HIM.
PETE TOWNSHEND AND JIM MORRISON WROTE A POEM FOR HIM AND JIM WROTE A SONG AS WELL. MAYBE I HAVE NO IDEA, BUT THAT SOUNDS TO ME AS IF THEY LIKED HIM OR AT LEAST CARED ABOUT HIM.
FURTHERMORE YOU HAVE ACCOUNTS BY PEOPLE (WOMEN) WHO CLEARLY SAY BRIAN DIDN'T CHASE AFTER EVERY SKIRT. I AM TOO LAZY TO LOOK THEM UP THOUGH.
Then the book goes on, taking Keith Richard's book Life as reference. I like Keith okay, but not a single word he says about Brian beside a couple of things are true. In my opinion Keith was and still is hugely jealous of Brian, so explain to me why I should believe a word he said?
He took everything of the poor guy (his band, his girlfriend, you can even see Keith wear Brian's clothes and Brian even helped him out at first with the guitar, a credit which often gets neglected...) Brian is now dead for nearly 50 years, so can sb explain to me why Keith is still bitching about him like a moody 15 year old girl???
Sure that's a quality witness.
I read Life and Bill Wyman's book Stone alone, which in my opinion gives a way better view on Brian than just calling him an 'asshole'.
"He was one of those people that are a bit of a hypochondriac and also a bit of a worrier. He was highly intelligent, very articulate. But he was sort of on the edge all the time. He could be the sweetest, softest, most considerate man in the world and the nastiest piece of work you've ever met. Opposites all the time. He'd flit from one to the other. He wouldn't give a shit for anything and then he'd worry about the slightest detail." - Bill Wyman
That sounds more accurate. Brian was a complicated character and he wasn't just one thing.
Another thing that drove me nearly insane while reading the book was how the author actually misquoted certain interviews, only as if to make Brian look like an awful being. He left out parts where you clearly could see more about Brian's good points.
Oh and ofc the girlfriend hitting and Anita. I'm surely not going to defend anyone who hits their girlfriend, but please can we not forgot that she hit him regularly too? They had a very abusive relationship, but on both sides and Brian is surely not the only on to blame there....
The only person who spoke rather good about him in this book was Linda Lawrence, (she was one of Brian's girlfriends, gave birth to one of his children and is married to Donovan), but the author puts it down as if she's only trying for her son to clear Brian's name or whatever.
What else?
Oh apparently he missed so many concerts with the Stones too, as far as I can remember it were only 15 he missed due to stress. Hell I probably missed more days at university alone this month than he missed concerts in his whole career.
It is true that he didn't pull his weight with the band towards the end, but can we please not forget that Mick and Keith nearly bullied him out. For instance if Brian wanted to participate they simply didn't record his part or cut it out later or whatever.
He did a lot of drugs sure and could be rather aggressive, but considering how he was treated by everyone isn't that nearly understandable?
Brian surely was no angel, but he was no devil either. He was human and we all are more complex than one single characteristic, so why concentrate on it?
Look at the whole picture. Thanks.
