Brian's Parents
Thanks to MissODell for the idea.
Usually I post some quotes or a news paper article or something else, because a) I'm lazy, b) they usually are more neutral than whatever I would write and c) most are accurate and give a good insight.
For this however it is a bit more tricky, Brian's parents usually get shown in a rather dark light. They 'treated him cruelly' and so on. The few quotes I found mostly speak about him having a very bad relationship with them, which I won't deny, however I would be a bit more hesitant in saying they were awful people. It's always easy to blame the parents, if something went wrong in somebody's life and in most cases they are not totally innocent, but that doesn't mean they are immediately awful people.
So let's look at this a bit more neutral and try to understand why one might think so. I don't want to talk fully about Brian's childhood, because that would probably end up being several pages long, so for now I'll just concentrate on his relationship with his parents for now and some more famous misconceptions.
A quick warning: This might not be a 100% accurate, so feel free to correct me and well this might contain a tad more of my personal opinion than I would like to as well.
Let's start very simple: Why do people even say Brian's parents treated him shit?
You find several sources where people claimed that for instance if Brian visited his parents or even talked to them his asthma got worse. It stressed him a lot, so obviously they had to have some difficulties. Even Brian himself said that his parents had been overly strict with him and that they didn't love him enough or preferred his sister. Furthermore they didn't exactly like Brian's music taste nor tolerate his behaviour on most things. They send him away when he got Valerie pregnant, but after a short while he returned and the whole thing started up again, which lead to them throwing him out in 1960.
That sounds awful, so did they really not care about him and preferred his sister?
It is in my opinion only one side of the story. Everyone who grew up with siblings probably at least at one point heard in their life 'why aren't you more like your brother/sister?', especially if your behaviour is perhaps not always the best. Brian definitely was no angel, you have several accounts by people that went to school with him that called him very intelligent, very brilliant during his exams, but a troublemaker. Hence it is hardly surprising that his parents probably had to be a bit stricter to him than to his sister and also is it normal that Brian found this unfair and felt treated badly.
But throwing their own child out is harsh!
It is and I don't want to defend anyone, but I doubt his parents got up one morning and decided 'what a nice day it is to throw Brian out'. As I already mentioned in my other answers Brian regularly fought with them about all kind of things. For instance getting a girl pregnant and not marrying her was at that time not exactly something you did and Brian's parents were rather traditional and very private. That they hence might not have agreed with Brian's life choices is again not very surprising. There were probably a lot of things that lead to that escalation, which doesn't make it look less awful, but neither does it mean they are awful human beings.
But after Brian died, they weren't interested in any tribute or anything. It is just like they wanted to ignore everything that had to do with their son!
Brian's parents organised his funeral for the most part and yes after that they isolated themselves a bit. Then again would it have been better if they had tried to make some money out of their dead son? Probably not. They probably just wanted their peace.

There's a lot more that could be said about this, but I don't want to make this any longer than it already is and furthermore this is a bit of a controversial topic, so I'm not sure how far I can go without stressing the somewhat neutral outlook too much.
In conclusion it is probably safe to say, that Brian's parents might not win the award for best parents of the century and that Brian was not totally innocent for their bad relationship.
