Books, Movies & More. [Updated Version] Part 2.

This was actually a lot of work, but luckily I'm in my 'I don't need more than 2 hours of sleep a night phase' and had time to look everything up and to write this.

I decided to split it up again, because otherwise this chapter would have been really long and I don't want to overwhelm people with these things.

Part 3 will be solely about fan fiction, I tried to track down every story in English about Brian on here, which were more than I expected. There are a couple more in other languages, but Wattpad won't let me find them if I don't change my language settings, which is really stupid. I know kind of 6 languages well enough to read stories in them, but I'm limited to one on here simply, because they only show me them in one. It would be no trouble at all to show you all the stories tagged with a certain word and then offer a language filter, they even have several already. (Completed, Mature, Length, Last Updated) Sorry for this minor rant, but this really irks me.

Well this chapter is only about songs, music and some other things.

3. Music:

Let's start with the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Their name is a homage to Brian obviously and he often is on their album artworks as well.

After all there's nothing more aesthetically pleasing than Brian Jones. *cough*

(And yes those are some of their albums I own btw.)

Their album or song names are sometimes a reference to the Stones (Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request) or something else classic rock related (Who killed Sgt. Pepper?) as well. The Brian Jonestown Massacre is an american band, formed in San Francisco in 1990. They're Psychedelic Rock mostly.

Before we talk in more detail about their songs, however here's a fun fact: Anton Newcombe, front man for the Brain Jonestown massacre, has claimed to be able to play 80 different instruments.

👏👏👏

The selection of these songs is mostly personal, ofc do they have some other great songs, but I can't mention every single one. If sb wants however to listen some more to them, I highly recommend the compilation album Tepid Peppermint Wonderland: A Retrospective (it's the red and black album on the photo)

This Is Why You Love Me

If Love Is the Drug, I Want to O.D.

Not If You Were The Last Dandy On Earth

https://youtu.be/c_y9vR38IW8

Note: This song was the answer to the Dandy Warhol's song "Not If You Were the Last Junkie On Earth", which they apparently wrote about the BJM. I don't want to go into any more details however- it's not exactly relevant for this chapter.

I think I leave it at that or I'll go on forever, so let's talk about Songs that mention Brian or are about him:

They're in alphabetical order, with video, if I found one and lyrics.

All You Can Do - Watsky feat. Jimetta Rose

https://youtu.be/urma71sQXpY

"I tried to join the 27 Club, they kicked me out
It was like I'm limping into heaven while my dick is out
And there's Amy Winehouse sitting on a cloud and drinking stout
But she spits it out the moment I come gliding in
She's all like, "come on Joplin, who the fuck invited him?! Hide all of the Heinekens!"
No, they don't know my name
My heart is lowkey broken so I'm taking Novocain
And Jimmy Morrison the doors, and Brian Jones, you know, the Stones
Are joking, toking on a roach playing a poker game."

Anti-Music Song - The Mountain Goats

https://youtu.be/tNQSOr4Jgis

"I saw you on TV
trying to figure out what Brian Jones would be like if he'd have lived 'til today."

Brian Jones - Salmonblaster

https://youtu.be/2MCLriLlt3Y

I found no lyrics online and the sound quality is a bit bad, so I didn't catch everything of the lyrics. Sorry ):

Brian Jones (The Real True Leader of The Rolling Stones) - The Bermondsey Joyriders

https://youtu.be/r6KLFIPUtvk

Brian gets mentioned throughout the whole song, well it's a tribute song after all, so there's not really a reason to post the lyrics here or I would have to post them all. Thanks to reallyedgykid for sharing this with me.

Death by Misadventure- Ted Nugent

https://youtu.be/ItTJR7ViVdo

"He stayed awake 'til daylight, didn't believe in health.
He never saw the sunrise, didn't believe in wealth.
Wrote dramatic music, was a rollin' stone.
No one understood him, they just left him alone."

Endless Art -  A House

https://youtu.be/OmEvTa7Npk0

"Henry Miller, Sid Vicious only 21, Brian Jones
Otis Redding 1941 to 1967 R.I.P.
All dead
Yet still alive
In endless time
Endless art"

 Godstar - Psychic TV

https://youtu.be/s1yr8w_vZ5E

"This is a story, a very special story.
It's about Brian Jones, one of the Rolling Stones."

I Saw Water - Tigers Jaws

https://youtu.be/OM59gLWjYOU

"But my emotions ran unopposed
I felt just like Brian Jones
I've never felt that lost before
I just don't feel incredible."

I Want You - Bob Dylan

This is btw my favourite song, there are no words to say how much I love it.♡ Hmm... well I'm actually a huge Bob Dylan fan too. The mention here is a bit less obvious than for the other songs, but I'm planning on doing a Bob Dylan chapter in the future, so we'll talk more about that there.

https://youtu.be/Q_0yaRVLeJ8

"Now your dancing child with his Chinese suit
He spoke to me, I took his flute
No, I wasn't very cute to him - Was I ?
But I did though because he lied
Because he took you for a ride
And because time was on his side."

Janitor of Lunacy - Nico

Nico wrote this song as a tribute to Brian Jones, as I mentioned before they were friends. He's not mentioned in it by name and I think it's nearly impossible to find out the song was written for him by just listening to it, but Nico said it was, so there you go.

https://youtu.be/fgG3EaOCh_c

  "Janitor of tyranny
Testify my vanity
Mortalize my memory
Deceive the devil's deed"

Long Live Rock & Roll -  Daughtry

https://youtu.be/lru6-J7uQjo

"We still argue about who's better
The Beatles or The Stones
They're forever 27
Jimmy, Janis, Brian Jones
And we stand here in their memory
'Cause their songs, they still survive "

Mick And Keith killed Brian - Jeff Dahl

https://youtu.be/_mEZ-kMEiIk

"Mick and Keith killed Brian
Tore his soul away
Turned his world upside down
And put him into his grave."

 Monterey - Eric Burdon

https://youtu.be/xExo67OLrdY

"His Majesty, Prince Jones,
smiled as he moved among the crowd..."

Rockstar - Dappy feat. Brian May

https://youtu.be/J5tKSeSF8-w

"I'll be the best till my dying breath: Brian Jones."

Rock & Roll' Rock & Roll  - Mungo Jerry

https://youtu.be/kgWmt2H-mCI

"Life is just another rock'n'roll song, one day you're up then you're gone.
Elvis Presley, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Jimi Hendrix
Marc Bolan, Muddy Waters, John Lennon, Bruce Lee,Jean Harlow, Roy Orbison, Gene Vincent, Brian Jones, Phil Lynott, Graham Bonnet, Tony Hancock, Glenn Miller,
Harold Wilson, Bon Scott, Vincent Crane, Sharon Tate,
Graham Chapman, Jack Benny, John Kennedy."

She's as pretty as Brian Jones was - The Drovers

Very shitty video quality and I didn't find any lyrics either... The quality is a bit too bad to understand everything they say. Sorry.

Shine a light/ Get A Line On You - the Rolling Stones

I already mentioned this song at the start of the book, because it is named after it. Mick wrote it about Brian before he died, they even recorded it, but it didn't get released. So they changed it a bit and released it a couple of years later after Brian's death.

https://youtu.be/AW7qaLIX1u0

"Your Berber jewelry is jangling down the street
Smile on your face for every high school girl that you meet
Could not seem to get a line on you
Could not seem to get-a high on you
My, my sweet, sweet honey lover, now, oh"

Something Special - De Phazz

https://youtu.be/oldITeTripc

"If there's no chance to reach you,
No bridge, no boat, no stones,
Then I would swim the waters,
Just like Brian Jones."

Swimming Pool - Toy Love

https://youtu.be/hA--zv3L5lE

"Well, I dunno, it seems OK to me
Jim Morrison, Brian Jones Marc Bolan, Jimi Hendrix
Lying at the bottom of
Your swimming pool ."

Tightrope Ride - The Doors

Jim started to write this song after Brian had died, but due to his own death exactly two years later, he never recorded it. Ray Manzarek rewrote it then and the Doors released it. Meaning Ray is singing the song.

https://youtu.be/1T3171i8Gs8

"You're on a tightrope ride, we're all by your side
But you're all alone, and we're going home
And we're by your side, but you're all alone
Like a Rolling Stone, like Brian Jones
On a tightrope ride"

Trash - Robyn Hitchcock

Sorry I couldn't find any video for this song on YouTube, but at least I found the lyrics this time:

"And you wish you could be Brian Jones
But now he's just a heap of bones
That's one better than you, you're a loser."

Brian Jones died for your sins

is the name of a psychedelic and garage compilation from mid eighties Italian bands: Peter Sellers & The Hollywood Party, Acid Flowers, Screaming Men Club, etc. You can find a playlist on YouTube, which I sadly can't share here. On Storenvy, you can buy the shirt for 15$ (it's only available in L though... 🙁 a size S would have been nice) and a rendition of the album on cassette for 10$.

However Brian Jones died for your sins it is the name of a painting by Chris Ferris as well:

The prints cost 73€, if sb wondered.

~

I forgot to mention Poems, but Poetry is not exactly smth I'm very passionate about and I already mentioned some in passing:

Jim Morrison:  Ode to L.A. while thinking about Brian Jones, deceased, I haven't talked about that one yet, but I'm planning on doing a chapter about it later.

Patti Smith: 'Brian Jones', 'Death by Water' & some others, but I already talked about this in the Patti Smith chapter, so I'm not going to do this again.

Pete Townshend: 'A Normal Day for Brian'  I already posted this in the Pete Townshend chapter, so I'm not going to mention it here either.

There are probably more.

As far as I remember Lou Reed wrote something on Brian as well as did George Harrison. It weren't poems  though, but it should still be mentioned somewhere. Well I'll post them in a future chapter. I really need to take notes, well I already spoke about the one by George in passing though.

~

Another thing I forgot to mention last chapter, is the TV show Vinyl. Mick Jagger helped creating it, is one of the executive producers and his son James Jagger has a part in it, which shouldn't be of any interest for this book, if it weren't for this:

Maybe I'm delusional, but there are some more similarities between Ernst and Brian that made me wonder about it. (I'm not going to mention them here or I might spoil the show) Of course I tried to look online if Ernst was indeed a reference to Brian, sadly I found nothing on that. So this is only my observation, you can of course disagree with me.

There are a few more references in Books, Movies, TV shows and so on about Brian, (I think I read a detective novel a while ago, which took place in 1968 in London and there was a character, who had a clothing store and of course Brian Jones loved to buy clothes there,) but naming every single one is probably impossible or would be a lot of work for one person alone.

I think I leave it here, this chapter has been long enough.

~

Note to Myself: You can find several Rolling Stones: The Brian Jones Years box sets or records, with some more uncommon songs by them. Most are rather expensive though. 😧

Thanks for reading, voting and commenting. ♡♡♡♡
