Sad storytime with Germany

Poland laid in his boyfriend's arms. They were watching TV in the living room. More like Germany was watching, since Poland was too busy melting in his embrace. He had his eyes closed and listened to Germany's heartbeat. The German's arms were wrapped around Poland tightly, making him feel safe. Poland almost fell asleep. Then Germany shook him gently.

"Are you awake?", he whispered.

Poland's eyes fluttered open and he stirred a little.

"Mhm."

Germany smiled and ran his fingers through Poland's hair.

"The film ended", he softly said. "We should go to bed."

The Polish boy whined and pushed his face in Germany's chest.

"I like it here though", he muttered.

"I know you do", the German smiled. "But we have a long day tomorrow, so we should go to bed early."

Poland sighed and got off of Germany. Germany stood up as well and fixed his glasses.

"I need to clean the lenses again", he muttered "Glasses are such a pain."

"Why do you wear them?", Poland asked.

"What kind of a question is that? Too see."

"No, I mean what's the problem with your eyes? Are you farsighted or shortsighted? I'm just curious."

Germany didn't reply. He stared at the floor, gripping the fabric of his pants. Poland sensed that something was wrong. He wrapped his arms around Germany and hugged him tight. Germany leaned into Poland's touch.

The two stayed like that for a log time. Finally the German carefully got out of his boyfriend's embrace. He smiled and caressed his cheek. Poland looked at him with worry.

"I'm okay", Germany whispered.

"Are you sure?"

The German took a deep breath.

"Yes." He sighed. "You probably have a bunch of questions you want to ask..."

"I do, but we'll leave them for later."

"No, you out of all people deserve to know."

Germany exhaled and leaned back. Poland moved closer to him, ready to comfort him at any moment.

"First your question from before- I'm neither farsighted nor shortsighted. I'm pretty much bind without my glasses. Have you opened your eyes underwater? That's my vision, but 10 times worse."

Germany went silent for a second. Then he continued.

"It wasn't always like that. When I was young I had an incredible eyesight."

"What happened?", Poland asked quietly.

Germany let out a heavy sigh.

"One night I was in my room when I heard a crash from downstairs. I got up and went to see if everything is okay... it wasn't. It wasn't okay at all. I- I saw him. Getting drunk. Again."

Poland shivered a little. Germany noticed and took his hand.

"I'm sorry, I know you don't like it when he is mentioned."

"Don't worry about me", the Polish boy softly said. "You can continue, if you want."

Germany gently smiled at his lover. He resumed talking.

"He had drank more than usual that night. I remember that the floor was covered in empty bottles and shattered glass", Germany sighed. "You'll probably call me an idiot for what I did next... I... I approached him."

Poland's jaw dropped.

"You approached Third Reich?!?! While he was drunk?!?!? What the hell Niemcy! You could have gotten killed, what were you thinking?!?!"

"I don't know... I guess stupid 12 year old me still cared for him and waned to help him...", Germany sighed again. "Anyways, I went over to him and... I don't remember the details, but at one point we were screaming at each other. All I wanted was for him to stop drinking. And I got hurt for that."

Germany stopped talking for a moment. Poland rubbed the back of his hand, attempting to comfort him. The German smiled sadly and continued.

"Eventually he had enough of me and..." Germany bit his lip. "I'm sorry, I need a second..."

"Of course" Poland hugged his boyfriend tight. He wanted give him a feeling of safety, to show him he's not alone.

A minute passed. Germany still hadn't said anything and worry crept in Poland. But not wanting to put pressure on his lover, he kept quiet.

"As I said, he had enough of me and...", Germany finally continued. His voice sounded so silent and broken, it made Poland's heart ache.

"He...", Germany clearly struggled to talk. Poland sighed.

"Niemcy, would you look at me?", he softly asked.

Germany turned his gaze to Poland. The Polish boy saw tears in his eyes. He gently cupped the German's face.

"You don't have to talk about it", he whispered.

Germany placed his hands on Poland's wrists and smiled.

"I know, but I want to."

He carefully pushed Poland's hands away and straightened his back.

"He raised the bottle and... began hitting me with it."

Poland gasped and covered his mouth with his hand. He was horrified.

"That's not even the worst part. He hit my head, the bottle broke and a few glass shards got into my eyes... I don't remember much, all I know is that I was in a lot of pain. I must have fainted, because I recall waking up in a bed", Germany sighed before continuing. "I couldn't see anything. It was like I had a white cloth on my eyes. I've never felt so terrified. I thought I would never be able to see again. Well, I received treatment, weeks passed and my eyesight slowly got better. It was never the same, but better than being completely bind. And if I wore glasses, I could see pretty well. Still, not even close to what my vision was before... So yeah. That's it. That's why I wear glasses."

"I'm so sorry", Poland whispered. "You didn't deserve any of this. Why would the universe be so cruel to you..."

The last part he said really quietly, but Germany heard it. He smiled and embraced his boyfriend in a hug.

"Everything is okay now. My life couldn't be better." He gently rubbed Poland's back. "Don't worry about me. I'm happier than ever."

"I'm glad to hear that", the Pole muttered. "You deserve all the happiness in the world, you know."

Germany laughed.

"I'm sure I got this covered already. You're my world and my happiness."

Poland felt his cheeks warm up. He snuggled closer to Germany. They hugged for a few minutes, without saying a word, just enjoying and appreciating each other. Then Germany had to ruin the mood by saying:

"We stayed up long enough already, let's go to bed for real this time."

Poland wanted to protest, but he wasn't given a chance. Germany scooped him up and carried him to their bedroom. He set him on the bed, then laid down next to him.

Poland shuffled closer to Germany. Germany wrapped an arm around him and hugged him tight, kissing the top of his head.

"Good night, Sunflower", he whispered. A smile appeared on his lips when he saw Poland was already half-asleep. He reached over to the night stand and turned the light off.
