Masquerade
George waited in his room worriedly for the special knock Francois had promised. Francois had curiously told him to wear his undergarments so he might look more like a Maior, but with his gartered stockings, and cinched stays, George doubted he looked anything at all like a Maior. He was interrupted from his thoughts by a firm knock at the door. He opened it to find Francois barefoot, in a pair of white long-johns that stretched from his ankles to his wrists, and had a buttoned pouch on the back for mid-night relief.
"What are you wearing?" Francois asked eyeing George.
"What are you wearing?" George countered.
"I'm wearing what the Maiors wear. You can't go over there like that, you look like a pansie." Francois teased, and George huffed quietly. George unlaced his stays, and removed his stocking, and though he felt utterly naked, he knew he'd look more like a Maior that way. "Come on. Let's go." Francois guided back behind the church into the library.
"Remind me why I'm letting you make me do this?" George whined, and they passed through the various rows of books. "What are we even doing here? The library isn't shared."
"Ah. It isn't." Francois effortlessly hoped over the librarian desk, "But the librarians are, so the staff room must be too." Francois surmised, and to George's shock, the Frenchman had been correct. Behind the librarian desk was an arch that led into a small staff room, where there was another arch, that opened straight out into the Maior's section of the library. After that they exited from the Maior section of the library back out into the fresh air, they walked slowly through the unfamiliar environment to a building marked "St. Joseph's Dorms" in Latin, however when they got there they found that the dorms were completely empty.
"What are we looking for again?" George asked looking around what appeared to be a mirror of their own dorm hallway.
"For Maiors."
"I get that, but why?" George pressed.
"No reason." Francois insisted, and George let up, too tired to attempt to argue. From behind them they began to hear mass amounts of footsteps and they both looked to each other and gulped.
"What are a couple of Parebants like you doing here, at this hour?" A voice called, and both boys turned around to see-
"hng!" George stifled a gasp as he turned to see the boy from earlier in the church, in his underwear. He averted his eyes, and the boy looked down at himself before grunting and quickly covering his bulge.
"Why would you think we're Parebants?" Francois asked, recovering from the awkwardness more quickly, and lowering his voice in a bad interpretation of Maior characteristics.
"I can smell it on you." The boy replied with a shrug.
"What do Parebants smell like?" Francois questioned.
"Eggs." The boy said after a moment, smirking at something only he seemed to find funny. "Now come one, before Mr. Carmichael catches you, and you really have a problem." The boy led them into his room, and George's eyes grew as wide as saucers.
"We're not allowed to be in here with you. It isn't proper." George reminded.
"It isn't proper for you to be here at all, but you're here, so you might as well see all there is to see." The boy affirmed. "Frederic, or Freddy." The boy said holding out his hand to George.
"We haven't been formally introduced." George answered, without making eye-contact.
"I'll just pretend I don't know you when we are."
"George Belmont." George said after thinking for a moment.
"Ahh." Frederic's smile grew, "Belmont. You're English. Probably got family in Parliament I'd wager." George nodded solemnly. "He doesn't talk much does he...--?" Freddy asked, turning to Francois.
"Francois."
"No last name?" Freddy asked.
"Nope."
"Why not?" Freddy questioned.
"Firstly, 'cause you didn't give one either, and secondly, because I like a little mystery." Francois smiled.
"Same here." Freddy grinned, "Well. It's getting early, you'd better run along and get out of Maior territory before the warden catches you." The pair stood up to leave, but Freddy stopped George at the door, "Oh and I wouldn't go back to my dorm if I were you. Go hang low in the library or the church until stuff blows over." Freddy said with a smirk before closing his door on two very confused faces.
