Chapter 2- All Moved In

After the horror show that was me trying to speak to my new neighbor Josh, I finished moving all my stuff in.

The room was a nice size. There were two loft beds with dressers underneath them, 2 closets and 2 desks.

It felt weird to be sharing a room with someone. The only room I've ever shared is a bathroom with my 2 older brothers and that was not fun.

This was another change I was going to have to accept now that I'm in college.

But, I picked who I was going to live with. I am so lucky to have met Rose at orientation this summer. Not only did I learn more about my dream school, but I met a friend and she seemed so cool.

I'm really hoping we get along. I'm not the best at social situations. Not surprising since my encounter with Josh. I'm still wondering what he was reading and why he was crying when suddenly I hear yelling.

"Dad, you're going to drop it! Be careful!" I hear right outside my door.

My door opened and there Rose was holding a small cactus in the doorway and standing behind her was her dad holding a mini-fridge. Well, he was trying to hold it. He looked like he was going to drop it when someone ran over and helped him put it down carefully.

It was Josh.

Of course, he had to come help Rose's dad.

I looked down where Josh was but was too distracted by the mini-fridge right next to him.

"It's so small," I say.

"I've never had any complaints about size before," Josh says

It takes me a second and then my virgin brain gets the joke.

EW!

"Are you kidding me?" I say as I grab Rose's stuff and slam the door in his face.

Of course.

He was a douche.

He can't be that attractive and a nice guy. Of course not. Who would want that?

ME! I would want that. But, the world tends to give me exactly what I don't want in life.

Rose and her dad seemed to think the whole thing was funny because I turn around and they're laughing.

Rose says "Wow. You've already made friends with one of our neighbors, I see!" in the most sarcastic tone.

"Ugh. Not at all. I didn't realize he was such a dick until he brought up his!"

Oh. My. God.

I just said that in front of Rose's dad!

"I'm so sorry Mr. Cox. I shouldn't have said that in front of you!" I say as my face is turning beet red from embarrassment.

"Genny, you do realize Rose and I's last name is Cox, right? I've heard a few dick jokes in my life."

"Dad!" Rose yells but soon begins to laugh and nod her head in agreement. "He's right. It sucks.

"Sucks isn't the best word to use, honey."

"Oh my God! Dad! You're so gross!" Rose yells.

I feel bad but I start laughing hysterically.

I wish my parents could have met Rose's dad. They left right after we unpacked the car because the ride home is over 5 hours. They wanted to make sure they would get home before nighttime. Rose said her mom couldn't come because of work.

Rose's dad leaves after they unpack all of her stuff. Then, Rose and I sit on our beds on opposite sides of the room and she immediately asks who "Mini-dick" is.

Her words exactly. "Mini-dick." I guess combining mini-fridge and dick makes for a great new nickname.

I laugh at the new nickname and roll my eyes. "His name is Josh," I say.

"He's our neighbor and I thought he was a nice guy, but clearly he isn't."

"Why'd do you think he was nice?" Rose asks.

I think to myself about his sincere look of sadness when he was reading the book and how he seemed so kind when he touched my arm and apologized for his tears.

No one should ever have to apologize for crying.

I decide not to tell Rose. Even if he is (and has) a "mini-dick", I don't want to share something so personal about him.

We haven't even finished move-in day, I wasn't going to brand him as the freshman guy who cries.

I decided to say, "I guess I mixed up good looks with good personality" and laugh with Rose.

But as I laugh, I think more about Josh crying.

I wonder if I'll ever find out what book it was that made him cry.

I wonder if I'll ever find out more about him.

But, do I want to?
