Not Just for Tumblr

One thing you'll hear when you talk about gender and sex is Tumblr. The first time someone told me to "go back to Tumblr" I was perplexed. Tumblr?! What is that, what does it have to do with being assigned gender and sex diverse? For a lot of people, the first they hear of assigned gender and sex diversity is on that website, and it's not a bad thing. It's great that a website managed to get people thinking about the social constructs of gender and sex, and it's great so many people are willing to learn, but how about Wattpad? Do you see gender and sex diverse stories here?

We'll get to what exactly gender and sex are in a minute, but right now, we need you to know that this is not some made up crazy talk. A lot of people like saying that, and by doing that they're trying to invalidate the identities of many people. It's also something people of Tumblr didn't just make up for no good reason.

For one, I learned about the construct of biological sex in a rocket science lecture* at university from one of my professors. Totally not Tumblr related. Some people learn about it from friends, from YouTubers, some from teachers and peers. Some of you might be learning about it here, now. Even if you did learn it on Tumblr, it's 100% valid. They're the real experiences of real people, therefore incredibly valid.

Wattpad might not be Tumblr, but these issues are not just Tumblr restricted, they're about real people and real issues. These stories have the right to hold space in literature and on Wattpad as much as any other story.

This will be our space to share and talk about the issues of gender and sex in Wattpad fiction, we hope you join us.

*Literally a rocket science lecture.
