| Chapter XXVII |
Standing up on the rooftop at the highest of heights I realize this is probably the first I’ve ever been this happy, this at ease. Under the blinking stars and flashing city lights, I rest my head against Hayden’s chest, my arms wrapped around his waist.
“There’s something about you Charlie,” Hayden starts and I feel like this is all too familiar once again, like Dejavu. “At first I thought I just wanted to help you but now I want to know all about you. No one leaves me this much at ease. You’re different.”
I was told this by Alex and Daniel and I suddenly feel afraid. Afraid that this would end up the same. I'm afraid being different won’t be a good thing once again. I mean what does that even mean anymore?
“I’m not different,” I assure him, looking up at him and reaching forward to wrap my arms around his neck. “I’m just me and I hope that’s good enough.”
Hayden smiles his dimpled smile. “You have no idea.”
Before either of us can say anything further, there’s a loud sound catching our attention from below us. It's the bulldozer moving, pushing the dirt while the workers in their uniforms are talking around the blueprints.
“Oh, crap.” I turn to back to Hayden with fearful eyes. “What’re we going to do?”
“I was pretty sure they were done for the day,” Hayden whispers under his breath more to himself before he grabs my hand and focuses ahead at the exit that leads to the staircase. “We have to leave, follow me and be very quiet, okay?”
I nod, my heart beating wildly. We are going to go to jail or something if they catch us! We aren’t even supposed to be here and I am absolutely terrified so I do just as Hayden tells me, not making a sound.
We run down the stairs as fast and as quiet as we possibly could. Hiding behind a big pile of rubble, Hayden looks at me. “Okay when I say go, run and don’t look back, I’ll be right behind you.” He waits for my confirmation and I nod quickly.
“Go!” And I’m off, running and running.
Someone shouts after me and I’m sure I’ve been spotted but I don’t look back.
I slip through the opening of the fence, leaving it open for Hayden and continue running. As I run through the streets, people looking at me, I start smiling before I find myself laughing and running. With my shoes in my hand, my bare feet slapping against the pavement, I’ve never felt so alive.
Suddenly I come to a stop, catching up on my breath before turning to look for Hayden and I don’t believe what I’m greeted with…
…nothing. He isn’t here.
“Hayden?” I call out stupidly. He clearly isn’t here; it isn’t like he suddenly has invisible powers. He told me to rub and not look back and that he'd be right behind me.
That fucking idiot.
Smacking my palm on my forehead, I take a deep breath before I run back. People are still watching, probably thinking I just escaped from a mental hospital - not that I blame them - as I run in the direction of where I most probably am going to earn myself some jail time for trespassing.
When I get back, I peek through the fence to see Hayden talking to the workers, using his hands a lot as he spoke.
I watch, wondering what the hell is happening, aren’t they going to arrest him or something?
Suddenly, they lead Hayden back into the building, and he follows without question. I furrow my brows and hurry after them.
I crouch beside the door, behind the bushes, contemplating what I should do. Should I just barge in? No that would be stupid. Hayden was such an idiot! Why didn’t he just run after me? Why did he have to always be the hero?
“Excuse me.” A voice makes me freeze. Slowly, I turn around with a shaky smile to face the construction worker looking down at me almost amusedly.
“Uh…I must be lost, I was looking for—” I cut myself off when he narrows his eyes suspiciously.
Crap.
Before I know it I’m being lead into the doors where Hayden just entered, a guilty look on my face as I walk in with my hands in the air voluntarily as if someone had a gun pointed at my head. Hayden spins on his heel to look at me with disbelief.
“Charlie?” I smile sheepishly his way. “You were supposed to run and not turn back, remember?”
“Well, you were supposed to be right behind me, remember?” I shot back and he sighs.
He says something to the workers and I watch as they leave the room, leaving just us. “Hayden, what the hell is going on? Are we in trouble?” I don’t like that fact that he seems calm and that I’m the only worried one here.
“No, we’re not.” He grabs my arm and leads me towards the back entrance. “Let’s just get out of here before they come back.” He rushes his words and I narrow my eyes, tearing my arm from his grasp.
“Tell me. What did they tell you? I’m so confused.”
Just then, a man walks through the front doors.
Hayden and I are standing near the exit as we see the man in the suit watching us from down the hall. He’s looking straight at Hayden, with similar black eyes, before they fall onto me.
“Hayden, what a surprise to see you down here.
My heart stops as I turn to see the blank expression on Hayden’s face as he stares at the clearly important man, my gaze slowly goes back to the stranger.
His suit probably costs more than my old apartment building. And they knew each other?
“Hello, father.”
My lips part when I hear this as I stare between the two, finally recognizing the similarities between them. This man is Hayden’s father? What the hell is going on?
…
“Have a seat.” Mr. Holt tells us both.
He led us to his office, which was the only completed room in the whole building, as we sat in the big red leather chairs. The walls are a peachy color but that's about all the color there is in the room. Hayden’s father sits in his seat behind the big mahogany desk, his hands clasped as he watches us idly.
“What were you doing sneaking around the construction site Hayden, you know it’s dangerous.” His father speaks coolly; he doesn’t seem upset though, at the same time his eyes flicker over me.
“I like coming up here,” Hayden replies coldly.
“I know that. I always catch you on the cameras but this is the first time you’ve brought someone here, and a girl at that.” There’s humor in his voice as he says this and I blush. “Sorry my son has no manners, I was hoping he’d introduce you?”
Guess that was my cue to give my name. No stuttering this time either. “Oh, I’m Charlie Davidson,” I stand up to shake his hand, somewhat amusing him as he shakes it.
“David Holt.” When he says this he becomes so much more familiar. That’s where I recognized Hayden’s last name. No way…
“You’re David Holt.” I continue shaking his hand, my jaw nearly touching his desk while he watches me with fascination. “You’re that famous multi-millionaire who owns hundreds of investments all over the world. Including some here, right in this city.”
I'm pretty sure this man already knew that but I just couldn't help but say it aloud. He's Hayden's father?
“That’s me.” He chuckles, and I notice the familiar dimples he shares with Hayden. They look so much alike. “I didn’t know people knew so much about me, usually I’m just David the millionaire, so this is flattering.”
Hayden rolls his eyes and I blush. “Well I’m taking management and I’m really interested in business and entrepreneurship, it inspires me,” I admit.
“If only my son could be as passionate,” David smiles sadly at his son who just looks away. I frown at that. Why is Hayden being so weird in front of his dad? “So what do you want to do Charlie? What do you aspire to be?”
I'm caught off guard by his question, surprised that this busy and important man is interested in what I have to say. “Well, I was just telling Hayden it’s always been one of my dreams to work in a hotel. There’s something about it, something about running one that I find exciting. To make customers feel at home and offer hospitality and a happy stay.”
Something I never got in my own house.
Mr. Holt watches me when I say this before smiling. “You remind me a lot like myself, Miss. Davidson.” He says leaning back and I’m once reminded with Hayden’s words from earlier. “My son could learn a few things from you.”
“Dad,” Hayden groans and I smile, sending a teasing smirk Hayden’s way subtly because his father obviously liked me. That made me feel pretty good.“We should really get going, we don’t want to keep you from your duties - you’re a busy man.” It’s the way Hayden says this that almost makes it sound sarcastic.
Hayden stands up abruptly, pulling me up with him.
“Sorry for intruding again Mr. Holt.” I give his father a sheepish look before glaring at Hayden.
“Wait.” He calls us back. With a sigh, Hayden turns to face his father in annoyance. “Hayden, why don’t you bring your girlfriend over for dinner to meet your mother, we would love to talk and get to know her without any disruptions.”
“I don’t think—”
“That would be wonderful,” I say instead through a forced smile, shoving Hayden to shut him up when his father isn’t paying attention. Hayden blushes, I almost don’t catch it, but it's there.
Was it because he said I was his girlfriend?
“Great, I’ll see you on Saturday.” Mr. Holt smiles before he starts coughing. The sudden reaction surprises me and still, he continues wheezing. This is serious; he looks like he's having trouble breathing.
Hayden rushes over to his father behind the desk. “Dad? Are you okay?”
“I’m fine, I’m fine.” He smiles when he stops, letting out a strangled cough every now and then. It was so sudden I'm pretty sure Hayden and I were both worried.
“Do you need water or anything?” I ask hesitantly, but he shakes his head, smiling.
“No no. It was nice meeting you, Miss. Davidson and I look forward to meeting you again.” He says instead, smiling but there’s something about the way he smiles that just doesn’t sit right with me. Hayden notices this too.
“You guys should get back to your dorms, it’s really late and we don’t want you two getting into trouble.”
With that being said, we say our final goodbyes and walk out of the construction site, passing the workers who watch us with interest. Hayden's silent the entire way back to our dorms and for the first time, the silence is uncomforting. I can’t help but wonder why Hayden was acting the way he was…
He said his father always wanted to own a hotel and manage it so why did he forget to mention his father was the owner of the hotel under construction at the moment?

So I stumbled across this comment, it read bad choices make a good story. Which isn't necessarily true for all stories, but I couldn't help but think how perfectly it fit for Charlie.
I feel like we're finally getting to know more about Hayden so this is exciting. I can't wait to write the chapter for the play! It's going to be fun ;)
