| Chapter XLI |

I'm surprised to see I'm getting a call from Alex. I quickly answer the call with bated breath. “Alex? Alex, are you okay?” My voice sounds urgent because I haven’t heard from him since then.

“I’m fine.” He says and I sigh. Thank God. “I’m being released from the hospital today, the police already talked to me and shit and it’s done. It’s finally over. I know you guys are coming to pick me up but can you come alone before them. I need you.”

My eyes widen and my lips part slightly. He needs me? “Um okay, I’m on my way right now.”

The hallway of the hospital Alex is in has as much personality as the rest of the place. The floor is a slate grey and the walls white. The ceiling is made from the polystyrene squares laid on a grid-like frame. There are commercial prints on the wall, tasteful in the dull kind of way.

Then I see Alex.

He's lying in the curtained cubical examining the polystyrene tiled ceiling. It's probably because there's nothing else to look at or because he's trying to ignore the groans of pain coming from behind the other curtains.

When he sees me, he grins but my feet remain grounded. Why isn’t he wearing his outfit and wig? I've become so used to it, it's almost weird.

Slowly, I find myself smiling back, walking further into the curtained cubical. I reach him and hug him before he gets the chance to say anything else. I stand there hugging him while he hugs me back before I pull away.

“Are you okay?” I ask worriedly.

“Yeah it was nothing; you should see the other guy.” He makes a joke out of it and I find the edges of my mouth curling up before I roll my eyes instead.

“How did you even manage to do it?” I ask, genuinely curious. I mean looking at Alex, he didn’t have as much as a chance as us.

“When you’re fighting for something you care about, you’ll do anything to win,” Alex says and my heart stops. Coughing to somehow ease away the tension he adds, “But honestly, I don’t even remember, I remember breaking a chair on him though.”

I laugh. “What did the doctors say about your get-up,” I ask, referring to Alexandra. She is basically a whole other person in my opinion.

“That’s why I called you here before them. The doctors don’t mind, they think it’s some weird hobby that I dress up as a girl,” he shrugs and I shake my head at him. He meant crossing- dressing I suppose. He really doesn’t give a shit about anything or anyone's thoughts, that's why it's so easy for him to pull all this off without a care in the world.

“I need you to take me home before they come here, I don’t want them to see me like this,” Alex adds hurriedly, looking at me expectantly.  There's a long pause. “You won’t help me will you.” He doesn’t ask this, he states this.

Of course, I don’t want to help him. I want them to find out the truth this way, to finally end this.

But I surprise myself with the next words that come out of my mouth.

“Alex, you saved my life. This Alexandra shit, I don’t care about it anymore. If you want to keep it up for whatever reasons, that’s up to you but it doesn’t affect me as much as it did before.” I tell him through a shrug, surprising myself with my new found confidence.

“You really did change,” Alex says but, by the way he smiles my way, I know he doesn’t mean it in a bad way. “Let’s get the hell out of here; we have a lot to talk about on the way home.”

“We do?” I frown.

“Yeah. It’s about your ex and your roommate.”

We walk back out of the hospital, Alex in a pair of dark jeans and a blue shirt. He's running his hand through his dyed platinum blond hair - it suits him more than the brown I used to remember months ago - humming as we reach my car.

“It feels so great to be a guy again,” he sings.

I roll my eyes, opening my car door before a voice has us both freezing. “Charlie!” I look ahead and Alex turns around to see Hayden, Daniel, Jack, Hunter, Clark, and Mary walking our way. They're all here and I'm nowhere near happy to see them for the first time.

“Where were you, I’ve called you like a thousand times,” Hayden says a little worriedly. I don't miss the look everyone gives him when he says that.

He looks at Alex then back at me, and the rest do the same. “What the fuck is going on here? Aren’t we supposed to pick up Alex?”

Alex himself stiffens.

No. No. No. No! This can’t be happening.

“Isn’t that your ex?” Clark points out in confusion and my heart drops into my stomach and decides to chill there for a while longer. I can’t speak. I can’t move. I just open and close my mouth like a crazy person with Alex standing tautly in front of me.

Slowly, I close my car door because it seems we aren’t going anywhere for now.

“Yeah, that is him,” Daniel confirms to my dismay. Of course, he would remember, how could he forget the person who socked him in the face the party we kissed?

Jack and Hunter look so confused but they decide not to speak.

Mary, on the other hand, looks scared for us. She's the only person who knows the truth, but she remains quiet.

“What’s going on Char?” Hayden asks, looking between Alex and I with a hurtful expression. I hope he’s not thinking what I think he’s thinking. “Why are you with him?” I actually don’t blame him for jumping to conclusions because honestly, this looks really bad.

“Hayden it’s not what it looks like—”

“Is this why you don’t want to tell anyone about our relationship? Because you’re still in love with your boyfriend?” When he says this, my mouth falls open but I don’t get to speak because someone quickly beats me to it.

“You’re in a relationship with him?” Alex snaps his head towards me, looking at me incredulously.

“I...uh no—”

“Yes," Hayden corrects me and he's giving me a look of surprise/hurt that I denied it. I didn't mean to say no, this situation isn't making me think properly. "She is,” Hayden says, taking an intimidating step forward and I groan.

They aren’t even letting me explain as they have their stare-off. This is getting out of hand already. I don’t even know who to explain to first.

“He looks oddly familiar,” Clark says, rubbing her chin as if in deep thought and from beside her, it looks like Daniel agrees, as they both look at Alex, probably thinking who he reminds them of.

“That’s probably because you two saw him before,” I counter, chuckling dryly although there was nothing funny, I was just nervous as hell. "My ex, remember."

“No. He looks like someone else.” Clark says, shaking her head and completely sure of her words.

With a huff, I ignore them, stepping between Hayden and Alex, trying to push them apart before something we might all regret happens. I can’t deal with everyone at once.

“Hayden listen,” I start.

“No. I want to understand why.” He says almost defiantly. I sigh.

“There is nothing going on between Alex and I—” “

Alex?” Daniel echoes, snapping his fingers. “He looks a hell of a lot like Alexandra!” Clark turns to him and agrees as they eye Alex and soon, so is everyone else. At first, they are shocked at the similarity between them but then they look confused.

“This is weird. It’s like a copy-paste replica when you think about it. Are you guys related or something?” Hunter asks for the first time, furrowing his brows.

“Listen as shocking as the resemblance is, does anyone want to wait with me inside the hospital?” Mary asks and I silently thank her, she's trying to take everyone’s mind off of the comparison between Alexander and Alexandra.

Who is the same person.

Hunter, Jack, and Clark follow her inside unsurely. Clark gives me a concerning look before she goes and I try to smile at her to reassure her but it doesn’t seem like it works.

“We have nothing to say to you guys,” Alex says, grabbing my hand and walking me to the car. He opens the door to the passenger seat but Hayden stops him, slamming the door shut again, before freezing. We follow his gaze inside the car and dread replaces any other emotion at what he finds.

Hayden reaches inside the car and pulls out the wig from Alex’s bag of clothes.

“What the hell is this?” Hayden asks almost angrily. Daniel is still behind him, looking shocked as Hayden holds up the wig. He walks forward grabbing the wig from Hayden before looking wearily back at Alex. There's a look of disbelief on his face as he places the wig on Alex.

Alex doesn’t move. He looks like a deer caught in headlights. It's over and we know it. The scars on Alex's face give it all away. I never expected them to figure it out this way. This is so bad.

Hayden’s eyebrow is twitching as he and Daniel stare at Alex with ultimate shock. They are completely flabbergasted. “What the fuck…” they both whisper in disbelief. Hayden turns to me when I don’t say anything.

"Please tell me it isn't what it looks like."

I don't say anything.

“And you knew all along?” Hayden asks but once again, I don’t answer. He just runs a hand through his hair in frustration, unable to find the words to say. Of course, the whole situation has them at loss for words. It would have anyone normal person like that.

“You’re a fucking dude!” Daniel snaps in disgust, throwing the wig on the floor. We all flinch at his angry tone but he doesn’t say anything further, he just turns around and runs a hand through his dirty-blond hair, his shoulders shaking.

I know he's trying to control himself because Daniel is a pretty impatient person.

“Why the hell would you dress up as a fucking girl?” Hayden asks tautly.

“It’s a long story,” I mumble because Alex seems to have forgotten how to speak English.

“Oh? One you clearly seem to know all about,” Hayden snaps and when our eyes meet, I freeze all over. They’ve never looked so cold, so unrecognizable. As dark as his eyes are, there's always a little warmth to them, but not this time.

“Charlie, I’m trying so hard not to assume shit so please, care to explain all this?” Hayden directs this at Alex because, by the look on my face, he knows I’m in no place to talk.

Or maybe he's just too angry to talk to me?

Knowing Hayden, it couldn't be the latter. Right?

Alex sighs. He looks at Daniel who goes deadly quiet; Daniel seems to still be in shock as he doesn’t meet anyone’s gaze. It doesn’t even look like he knows what’s going on around him anymore. He looks so shocked and so hurt.

“I did this for Charlie, to get her back.”
