11 - Deep slumbering and New Horror Arose
Days turned into nights, and nights turned into days as Fourth, Captain, and Nook sought refuge in the storage shed, their only sanctuary amidst chaos of the outside world. They scavenged for food and water, making the most of the limited resources they had.
After nearly a week of much-needed rest and recovery, Fourth couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope in his heart. The injuries that Gemini had sustained were unimaginably severe, and yet there was something inexplicably miraculous about his healing process. Despite the initial thoughts of his injuries being fatal, Gemini's wounds seemed to be closing at an astonishingly rapid pace.
Still, Gemini showed no signs of movement, his body frozen in a deep slumber. But if one looked closely, they could see his chest moving slightly, rising and falling with a calm and steady breath. It was a hopeful sign that he was slowly recovering from his ordeal and coming back to the world of the living.
Fourth longed to see those beautiful eyes open again, to hear that calming voice whisper his name, to feel his gentle hands carressing his cheeks. He spent every spare moment by Gemini's side, holding his hand, talking to him, praying for him.
But Fourth knew he couldn't linger in the shed any longer. He had to help his friends to find a way out of this hell. He had to fight for his future, and for Gemini's. He touched his neck, where a jade pendant hung on a red thread. It was his most cherished possession, a gift from his mother before she passed away. He never parted with it, not even when he showered or slept. But now, he felt a sudden impulse to leave it with Gemini, as a symbol of his love.
Fourth unfastened the thread and placed it around Gemini's neck, letting the pendant lie on his chest. He bent down and kissed Gemini gently on the forehead, feeling a faint warmth on his lips. He whispered, "I love you. I'll come back soon. Please, be awake by then na."
Fourth got up and walked over to Nook, who was sitting on a crate, writing something on her notebook. She looked up at him and smiled. Her eyes sparkled in the dim light of the shed. "Hey, Fourth. How's Gemini doing?" she asked.
"He's still sleeping, but I think he's getting better. His wounds are healing fast," Fourth said.
"That's good to hear. He's a tough guy, he'll pull through," Nook said. She put down her pen and closed her notebook. It was filled with sketches and notes about their situation. She had been documenting everything that happened since the outbreak.
Fourth nodded. He glanced at the makeshift bed where Gemini lay, took a deep breath and said, "Nook, I need to ask you something."
"Sure, what is it?"
"Captain and I are going to head to the radio room and may be some other places. Could you take care of Gemini when we are away."
Nook's expression melted into sympathy as she nodded in assent. "Of course, Fourth," she said kindly. "I'll happily look after Gemini while you're gone. You can count on me to keep a vigilant eye on your boyfriend."
Fourth was surprised what Nook had just said. He felt a blush creeping up his cheeks. He hadn't told anyone except Captain about his relationship with Gemini, but he guessed it wasn't hard to figure out. "Y-You know?"
Nook smiled and nodded. "Yeah, I know. Captain told me, but I already had a hunch based on the way you took care of him in the past few days. You two are so sweet together."
Fourth felt a surge of gratitude towards Nook. She was such a kind and supportive young lady. He smiled back at her and said, "Thank you, Nook. I'll leave Gemini with you then. We have to go now."
Feeling determined, Fourth grabbed his backpack and slung it over his shoulder, while Captain checked their baseball bats. They had to get back to the radio room and check on Win and Satang. Maybe they had some good news about the rescue team from the military.
However, they were clearly aware of the difficult task that lay ahead. The campus was infested with ravenous zombies, relentlessly seeking their next meal of flesh and blood. Occasionally, they could clearly hear the agonizing screams pierced the air as their unfortunate fellow students, desperate for supplies, dared to venture out into the perilous unknown.
As he and Captain crept through the abandoned campus, he sharpened his mental focus, letting his psychic senses lead their way. Even though Fourth had trouble mastering his new power, he found a way to channel his psychic energy to detect the zombies nearby. He could sense them like blips on a radar, pulsing with a faint but unmistakable life force. He could also tell how many there were, how far they were, and which direction they were moving. He used this information to avoid any unwanted encounters, steering them away from the danger zones.
Yet, they couldn't avoid every zombie they encountered, but Fourth was ready for them. His power had enhanced his instincts and physical abilities, allowing him to anticipate the zombies' movements with eerie accuracy. The handsome boy moved with grace and speed, striking with his full force at the zombie's head. The result was devastating: the zombie's skull shattered in a bloody spectacle as Fourth unleashed his formidable strength.
Blood and gore sprayed in all directions as the zombie's head burst like a ripe melon. But Fourth remained unscathed by the carnage. His power manifested as a shimmering shield that enveloped his body, deflecting the repulsive debris of the defeated zombie. His clothes and skin were spotless, as if he had never engaged in such a brutal fight.
Captain gaped at Fourth, his eyes wide with awe and disbelief. "Seriously? Not a single drop of blood on you? How do you make it look like a walk in the park while I end up covered in zombie guts every time?" he blurted out, his voice a blend of admiration and playful jealousy.
Fourth smiled, flicking the last specks of blood from his luminous shield. "Well, I guess it's just one of the perks of my power." he replied, a touch of amusement in his voice. "Besides, you can wear the zombie guts like a badge of honor, Captain. It's your own unique style."
Captain mock-pouted, pretending to be offended. "Ai' Fourth, don't undermine the appeal of a gore-covered hero. It's the latest fashion trend in the post-apocalyptic world, you know?"
Fourth and Captain shared a lighthearted moment amidst the chaos, finding comfort in each other's presence and humor. It was these brief moments of friendship that lifted their spirits and strengthened their resolve to survive.
As they continued their perilous journey through the zombie-infested campus, to their surprise, the mutated monster was nowhere to be seen. Its absence brought both relief and concern, for they couldn't shake the feeling that it was merely biding its time, lurking somewhere in the shadows, waiting for an opportune moment to strike.
Luckily, they were able to move to the radio room safely, as it seemed like the mutated beast had gone away. Upon reaching door of the radio room, Fourth discreetly pulled Catain aside. "Hey, Captain, I think we should keep my power a secret for now. We don't know what caused it, and it's better not to raise unnecessary questions or concerns."
Captain nodded in agreement, he knew his friend's reason "You're right, Fourth. It's best to keep it under wraps for now. We have more pressing matters to deal with."
Together, they entered the radio room and found Win and Satang huddled together, they were happy when they saw them.
"Fourth! Captain!" Win exclaimed, a mixture of relief and worry evident in his voice. "We were so worried about you. What happened? Where is Gemini?"
Fourth and Captain exchanged a quick glance, silently agreeing not to reveal the full details of the encounter with the mutated monster and Fourth's new-found power.
"Gemini got injured during the chaos," Captain explained, his voice calm yet concerned. "We found a safe place for him to recover, but he's still unconscious. Nook, our friends is taking care of him at the moment."
Win and Satang nodded, their worry evident. "We're glad you're both okay," Satang said, his voice filled with relief. "The military updates haven't been very promising, but we're still hoping for a rescue team to arrive soon. They said they might need a couple of weeks."
Fourth nodded. After seeing Win and Satang was safe, he planned on his next action. He took a deep breath, his mind filled with determination. "I need to head to the Medical Faculty next," he said firmly. "Gemini has friends there, and they deserve to know what happened to him. Maybe they can also help us find a way to wake him up."
Captain nodded in agreement. "You're right. After all, they're medical students, they might have some knowledge or resources we can use. I will come with you."
With a renewed sense of purpose, Fourth and Captain left the radio room, bidding farewell to Win and Satang, who stayed behind to monitor the radio for any updates. They now had to rely solely on the radio system to communicate with the world, as the CCTV cameras had been dead since the power outage two days ago.
--------
It took them little time to reach the entrance of the Medical Faculty, thanks to Fourth's ability to sense zombies. Upon arriving, Fourth's heart pounded with a mix of anticipation and anxiety. He hoped that Gemini's friends would be able to help his boyfriend. With a firm resolve, he pushed open the entrance and walked into the teaching building, Captain by his side.
The teaching hall of the Medical Faculty was eerily quiet, the halls filled with an air of desolation. It was a stark contrast to the chaos and violence they had witnessed outside. Fourth and Captain cautiously made their way through the corridors, their footsteps echoing through the empty halls.
As Fourth and Captain explored the Medical Faculty, the sight that met them was chilling. Blood splatters covered the walls and floors, creating a macabre tapestry of horror. The smell of decay hung in the air, making it hard for them to hold back their revulsion.
The open classrooms showed scenes of chaos and carnage. Desks were toppled, papers scattered across the floor, and medical equipment lay discarded and broken. It was clear that a desperate struggle had happened here, leaving behind a grim reminder of the dangers they faced.
Captain's stomach twisted at the sight, and he felt a surge of nausea hit him. He looked away, trying to calm himself. Fourth, though equally shaken, managed to keep his composure. His improved control over his emotions and senses helped him to focus on their goal, even in the face of such gruesome scenes.
Fourth looked at Captain, seeing his pale complexion and trembling hands. He asked him softly, "Are you ok? Can you keep going?" Captain nodded, taking a deep breath. He said, "Yes, I'm ok. Let's go."
They climbed up the staircase and reached the Lecture Hall 1, where Gemini's friends were supposed to be staying. Captain approached the door. He knocked gently, calling out, "Hello? Is anyone there?"
There was no response. "Something's wrong. The door was unlocked." Fourth gestured for Captain to step back, a feeling of dread rising in his chest. The door being slightly open and the burnt smell were clear signs that something had gone wrong.
Using his power, Fourth scanned the inside of the Lecture Hall 1 for any threats. After knowing it was safe, he opened his eyes and nodded to Captain, who was anxiously waiting behind him. They entered the room cautiously, their hearts pounding with a mix of dread and anticipation. The scene before them was haunting. The air was heavy with the acrid smell of burnt wood and scorched flesh. Charcoal marks covered the walls and floor, evidence of a fierce and destructive fire that had raged through the room.
As they made their way further into the room, their eyes fell upon the remnants of burnt chairs and tables. The once-organized rows were now in disarray, reduced to ashes and twisted metal. It was a devastating sight that sent shivers down their spines.A sense of sorrow washed over Fourth, his mind filled with concern for Gemini's friends.
Captain's voice broke the heavy silence, his voice laced with worry. "This... this doesn't look good, Ai' Fourth. It seems like there was a massive fire here. But why? And where are Gemini's friends?"
Fourth scanned the room, looking for any clues that could explain what had happened. Among the charred debris, he spotted something. It was a burnt corpse of a girl named Ploy. Her student ID lay next to her.
Captain felt a surge of dread as he gazed at the gruesome sight. He struggled to comprehend the horror before him. He turned to Fourth, his voice quivering with fear. "Fourth, do you think... do you think they had to do it? Like... she became a zombie, and they had no choice but to kill her and burn her body? And then the fire got out of control and destroyed everything. Is that why the room is like this?"
Fourth, however, walked over to the corpse, his face grim but calm. He knelt down and inspected the remains, looking for any evidence that would reveal the truth. After a while, he rose and shook his head. "No, Captain," he said softly. "She wasn't a zombie."
Captain's confusion deepened as he saw Fourth's expression. "But... how do you know?"
Fourth pointed out the details he had observed. "Look closely. Her teeth aren't elongated like a zombie's fangs, and her fingers' bones haven't transformed into sharp claws. These are common physical changes that occur when someone turns into a zombie."
Captain's mind swiftly grasped the weight of Fourth's implication, his expression growing somber as the truth unfolded before him. "Are you suggesting..." he hesitated, the gravity of the situation sinking in. "...that this young girl was subjected to an unspeakable fate—burned alive while still in her human form?"
Fourth solemnly nodded in confirmation, his gaze mirroring the captain's distress. The horrifying realization hung heavily in the air, casting a pall of sorrow over their already dire circumstances.
