Epilogue - Part 2A
Since Epilogue 2 and 3 were getting too long to post, I have split them as parts A and B, so now you'll get to read Epilogue 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B.
I wanted to maintain the emotions so that you can notice the details, and not want it to be one big chunk of text, so here you go!
Enjoy!
....
Few weeks later
Raavi sat down on the floor, massaging Suman's aching legs, her sadness evident on her face.
"Kya hua, Raavi beta? Udaas lag rahi hai."
"Kuch nahi, Maa." Raavi sighed, laying her head on Suman's lap.
"Udaas nahi hai toh itni gumsum kyu hai? Kuch hua hai?" Suman patted her head.
"Woh..." She sat up and looked at Suman, "Janu ne abhi tak mujhe Mumma nahi bulaya, na woh Papa bol rahi hai. Aap sab ko toh kitni aasani se Dadi, Chachu bolti hai. Hume bulane ke liye woh bas haath pakadti hai, ya poke karti hai."
Suman nodded her head, caressing Raavi's hair, "Tu chinta mat kar. Choti si bacchi hai, buddhe Dadi-Nani ke saath badi hui hai, isliye asaan hai uske liye." She explained and Raavi looked on.
"Usne kabhi kisi ko Maa Papa nahi bulaya hai, aadat nahi hai bacchi ko. Isliye mushkil padta hoga." Suman patted Raavi's cheek, "Par tu ten-sun mat le. Usse tem dede thoda, hai na?"
Raavi nodded, understanding her child's point of view, just as Janhavi stomped in with a frown, Sarita Bhabhi and her son, Chintu following.
"Kya hua, Bhabhi? Gusse mein lag rahe ho." Raavi asked, noticing the evident anger on Sarita's face, ruffling Janu's hair, "Aye Chintu! Ye chot kaise aayi tujhe?"
The older boy, around 10-11 years, looked visibly beaten up with a black eye and bruises around his face.
"Chot kaise aayi?!" Sarita fumed, holding her son, "Apni beti se pooch ye chot kaise aayi!"
Raavi didn't appreciate the tone she was talking in, which had diverted Shiva's attention from the presentation he had been making, joining them in the aangan.
"Bhabhi, aaramse baat bhi kiya jaa sakta hai. Bewajah meri beti pe chillane ki koi zaroorat nahi." Shiva reprimanded, as Raavi sat down at Janhavi's level.
"Janu, kya hua, bacche?" She asked gently, checking her for injuries, "Aapko ye chot kaise aaye? Chintu ko bhi itni chot kaise aayi?"
"Maine maara usko." Janhavi claimed, taking Shiva and Raavi aback in utter shock and surprise.
They looked back at Chintu, who clearly looked like he got into a fight, and then back at Janu, their tiny little baby girl. How on earth did she manage to beat up a much larger boy who was at least 7 years older to her?
"Why, darling?" Shiva asked, checking her arms and legs for injuries, "We don't beat people like.....like this na? See, his full face is blue."
Janu frowned, "He was saying bad things about Raavi Mumma, so I BEAT him!"
Raavi snapped her head back so fast, she was afraid she'd wake up with a sprain the next day. "Kya kaha aapne?"
"I BEAT him!"
"Uske pehle kya kaha?" Raavi whispered, unsure if she had heard it right. "Mumma kaha aapne?"
Janhavi blinked twice, before nodding her head. "Haa. Aap mere mumma hi toh ho!"
Raavi looked up at Shiva and then at Suman, smiling with tears in her eyes, pulling Janhavi close and squishing her in the tightest hug.
"Phirse Mumma bulaao mujhe?" She requested, and Janhavi smiled.
"Mumma!"
Raavi kissed her cheek and chuckled, while Shiva ruffled his little one's head and Suman cracked her knuckles to ward off evil.
"Ye kya laga rakha hai!" Sarita yelled, bursting their little bubble, "Aapki beti ne mere bete ko itna maara hai, dikh nahi raha?!"
"Pehle toh aap apne bete se pucho ki itni choti ladki se pitkar kaise aaya." Shiva fixed his own collar, proud of the punches his daughter threw.
Janhavi frowned and stepped forward, "Tu jaata hai idhar se ki-"
She waved her fist at the boy, and Shiva laughed, reminiscent of his childhood when he threatened other kids, as Chintu scampered off with his mother at his tail.
"Very good! I'm so proud of you!" Shiva laughed, giving Janu a high-five as Raavi glared at them.
"Aye Gunda Boy, isko Gundi Pandya mat banaao." She grumbled, grabbing the first aid and sitting her down on a stool, rubbing antiseptic onto her wounds.
"Aah, it's paining!" Janhavi cried, holding Shiva's hand as Raavi cleaned her wounds.
"Aur karo maar pitaai, toh jalega na!" She claimed, covering the wounds with a bandaid.
"Ho gaya, see, finish!" Shiva waved his hands, and Janhavi giggled, raising her arms towards Shiva, indicating that she wanted to be carried.
"Neeni aayi?" Shiva asked, and she nodded slowly, as Shiva carried her against his chest and patted her head until she fell asleep in his arms.
"She called me Raavi Mumma." Raavi whispered excitedly, noticing that Janu had fallen asleep already, and sat next to Shiva.
"Hi Raavi Mumma." Shiva teased, and she swatted his arm, curling her hands around his biceps and resting her head against his shoulder.
Shiva looked at Janhavi and then at Raavi, and knew one thing for sure: they were certainly a perfect fit to be Pandya girls.
....
Raavi brought down the clothes from the cupboard and began folding and rearranging them, when she noticed Shiva's fallen face.
"Tu udaas kyu hai?"
"Kuch nahi, chipkali." Shiva sighed, getting up to leave, when he felt her fingers on his wrist.
"Kuch toh baat hai."
He looked back at Raavi and then at the floor, which worried her, because he looked troubled about something serious.
"Mai bura baap hu kya?"
Raavi gaped at the audacity he had to even ask this question, "Kya bakwaas kar raha hai! Of course not! Janu loves you."
"Toh usne abhi tak Papa kyu nahi bola hai?"
She sighed, as Shiva looked away, trying to clean the bedside drawer as a distraction. Raavi knew it bothered Shiva, that his own daughter wouldn't call him 'Papa'. He loved her to bits, catering to every whim and fancy of hers, because he wanted to give her everything she didn't have before.
Little did he know, his baby girl was in awe of him. Every night, when Shiva insisted on tucking her into bed, and she sneaked in to give Janhavi a goodnight-kiss, Janhavi would always tell Raavi how much she loves Shiva.
She'd never take his name, but Raavi knew exactly who she was talking about, that glimmer in her eyes reserved for only 2 people.
"Dadi, Chachu, Bua sab bolti hai, yaha tak tujhe Maa bhi bola hai usne. Bas meri baari nahi aayi."
"Shiva, tu bura papa nahi hai. Woh bas choti si bacchi hai, thoda time dede usko?" Raavi stood next to him, rubbing his arms.
"Par-"
"Uss din, jab tune usse park ghumaya, toh woh kitni khush thi. Phir abhi 2 din pehle, you took her shopping and bought her 20 different toys without saying no. Aur uss din, jab Dhara Di ne usse plate todne ke liye daata, toh tune unhe saaf mana kar diya apni bacchi ko daat lagane se. "
"Tu janta nahi, Shiva, lekin woh tujhse bohot pyaar karti hai. Usse bas jatane nahi aata, bilkul teri tarah." She pinched his nose, "Tu itna accha papa hai uska, she adores you." She smiled, hugging his arms, which made Shiva smile a bit.
"Tension mat le itna, hmm?"
Shiva nodded, somewhat convinced, and left for office, unaware that Raavi had a cute secret she was hiding.
When Shiva returned in the evening, Janhavi came running in fear and hugged his legs.
"Janu-" Shiva held her before she headbutted him, "Kya hua, baby? Itna darr kyu gaye ho?"
"Papa, chipkali!" She screamed, hugging his legs tighter.
"Kaha?" He looked around but couldn't see any lizard.
"Room mein!"
"Accha chalo, mai bhagata hoon chipkali-"
"No!"
"What, no?" Shiva scratched his head in confusion, "You don't want me to remove the lizard?"
"No, I'm not coming! I'm scared! Lizard will jump on me."
Somehow, he convinced her that the lizard won't jump on her because he was there to protect her. He held her hand and took her to her room, opening the door in search of a lizard.
Shiva was greeted by the most pleasant surprise.
Raavi sat on the floor, a bit of the decorative paper stuck to her hair as she focused on making paper roses, while Janhavi's room had been decorated in balloons and party strings, with a poster that read "Happy Father's Day!"
Shiva chuckled, gathering Raavi's attention as she got up and sighed.
"Tu aur thoda late nahi aa sakta tha kaam se? Abhi tak room pura decorate bhi nahi hua tha." She pouted, and Shiva kissed her pout.
"Thank you, meri jaan-"
"Chee Papa! No lip kissy! Yucky."
Shiva whipped his head around so fast, he thought it would fall apart. He stared at Janhavi for a long time, trying to convince himself he was hallucinating.
"What did you say, sweetheart?" He whispered, sitting down on his knees and holding Janhavi by her arms gently.
"Happy Father's Day, Papa." Janhavi smiled, and Shiva felt happy tears sting at the back of his eyes.
"Aapne Papa bulaya mujhe?" He asked, a watery chuckle escaping his lips, and Janhavi nodded, wiping his eyes with her tiny palms.
"I love you, Papa."
Shiva hugged her as tightly as he could, peppering her face with kisses which made Janhavi giggle, morphing into tinkling laughter.
"I love you more, meri soan papdi!"
"What is soan papdi, Papa?"
"Mithai. Because you're so sweet, I'm going to eat you up!"
Janhavi screamed and ran around, giggling and laughing trying to dodge Shiva, who was chasing her and tickling her. He caught hold of her and acted as if he'd gobble her up, which made her laugh and squirm until he had set her down.
"I thought there was chipkali in this room?"
"Chipkali!" Janhavi pointed to Raavi, earning a hearty laugh from Shiva.
Raavi smiled and leaned against the door frame, clicking pictures on her phone as a memory for later.
"Papa, I brought gift for you!" Janhavi pranced around until she found her small cardboard box.
Shiva looked at Raavi and then back at Janhavi, before opening the box to a cute surprise.
Inside was a tiny pink flower charm, with a honey bee attached to it. Absolutely something that a 4-year old would choose.
"Papa, you can put it on this," Janhavi pointed to his trishul locket that hung around his neck, "Then EVERYONE can know you are MY SHIVA PAPA!"
Shiva took a good look at the charm and then at his locket. A baby pink charm around his neck? But it was a gift, and he would never say no to his baby girl.
So he unclasped his locket and attached the charm to his chain, which now hung right above his trishul.
"Happy?"
"Yay! Thank you, Papa!"
"Bye Papa, have fun!" Raavi teased and waved, and Shiva stuck his tongue out at her, walking towards her and removing the decorations that were stuck to her hair.
"Thank you, my love." He kissed her cheek, and Raavi blushed, "Ye decoration, gift aur cake obviously Janu ne nahi banaya hoga akele."
"She helped me, you know? And fell on her bum thrice." Raavi laughed, which made Janhavi pout.
"Mumma! Don't make fun of me!"
"But it's so cute, baby!"
"No!" Janhavi crossed her arms across her chest, and turned away, which only made Raavi chuckle more.
"But Papa thinks Janu is the cutest." Shiva whistled, trying to get Janhavi's attention, which he successfully did.
"I'm in Papa's team now." Janu stuck her tongue out at Raavi, who shook her thumb in response.
Knowing very well that her 'Papa' himself was in her Mumma's team.
.....
The sound of the doorbell caused Janhavi to dash towards the door, expecting her parents to be back from their outing.
But the set of unfamiliar faces put her into quite the confusion.
"Hi." The lady holding a bouquet flowers greeted, peeking into the house. "Aap kaun hai?"
Janhavi didn't reply, because she remembered that her Mumma had taught her not to talk to strangers.
"Aap kaun ho, aunty?" She asked innocently, as a few more heads peeked around the back.
"Ye ladka hai kidhar? Hum usse surprise karne aaye hai, khud surprise kar raha hai, gadha kahinka."
"Shhh. Bacchi hai yaha."
"Gadha gaali nahi hoti."
"Just shut up yaar!"
"I'm not the only one standing at my friend's house being greeted by a gremlin."
"That's a sweet little child! Keep shut, you moron!"
"Ab moron gaali nahi hai?"
Janhavi almost closed the door on their face, when the lady with the bouquet knelt down at her level.
"Hi!" She greeted again, and Janhavi smiled a little. Maybe she's nice....
"Aap ko kaun chahiye?" Janhavi asked innocently.
"Shiva aur Raavi se milne aaye hai. Hum unke dost hai!"
"Mai aapko believe kaise karu?" She asked innocently again, and the lady smiled.
"Fair enough. Dadi kaha hai?"
"Sleeping."
"Shiva aur Raavi ghar pe nahi hai?"
Janhavi ignored the question and peered at the lady with the bouquet for 2 minutes, her hazy confusion clearing out just a bit.
She dashed into the room, returning with a photo frame and placing it front of the lady's face.
Make up? Same.
Earring? Same.
More aunty uncle? Same.
Hair? Not same. But it's okay.
"Aap ye waali aunty ho?" Janhavi turned the photo frame towards her, and she smiled.
"Yes, that's me!" Mahi smiled, pointing to her friends at the back. "Hum sab Shiva Raavi ke saath college mein the. We're friends!"
Janhavi walked around with the photo frame, matching everyone to the picture. They introduced themselves as Mahi, Richa, Shashank, Gaurav and Aman.
"Ye uncle kaun hai?" Janhavi pointed at the unfamiliar face, a face that wasn't in the picture.
"That's Rohan. He's with this uncle." Richa explained, pointing to Shashank. "Can we come in?"
"Okay." Janhavi opened the door and let them in, as they settled themselves on the sofa.
"You didn't tell me your name?" Mahi asked, setting the flowers down. "Waise, hum toh Shiva Raavi ke friends hai, but aapko aise kisi ko ghar ke andar aane nahi dena chahiye, okay?"
"I know! Meri mumma ne mujhe sab sikhaya hai!" The little girl quipped, "My name is Janhavi Pandya."
"Hi Janhavi! You're a very sweet girl." Rohan smiled, and Janhavi waved at him.
"Aap bohot handsome ho."
"Thank you, you are so cute!" He laughed, pulling her cheeks. "Aapke mummy papa kaha hai?"
"Bahar gaye hai."
"Oh, toh aapke Chachu aur Chachi aapko babysit kar rahe hai?"
"Nahi. Mere Chacha toh door rehte hai. Mai yaha Mumma Papa ke saath stay karti hoon."
Everyone in the room was confused about the little child before them, who was claiming that she wasn't any of the Pandya children. If she wasn't the child of the oldest 2 brothers, then who was she?
The sound of an engine broke their thoughts, as Janhavi smiled and dashed towards the door, pleased to see Raavi and Shiva returning with a few boxes and bags.
"Aapke friends aaye hai!" She quipped holding, both their hands.
"Friends?" Raavi asked, setting the bags and boxes down, letting herself be pulled by Janhavi and pleasantly surprised by the sight before her.
"TUM LOG YAHA?!" Raavi squealed, jumping into Mahi and Richa's arms, as Shiva chuckled and pulled Gaurav, Shashank and Aman in for a tight hug.
"Aise surprise dene bhi aate ho, kameeno!" Shiva clapped their backs, hugging them again, noticing Rohan.
"Hi, I'm Shiva, this is my wife, Raavi." He shook hands and introduced Raavi.
"Heard a lot about you, I'm Rohan. I'm with...." Rohan simply pointed at Shashank, and Shiva nodded approvingly, while Raavi gaped.
"Wait....." Raavi walked threateningly towards Shashank, "You got MARRIED?!"
"Listen-"
"HOW COULD YOU NOT TELL ME?!"
"Abe oye sun-"
"I WAS SUPPOSED ARRANGE THE WHOLE THIN-"
"Can you shut up?" Shashank rolled his eyes, and Raavi stuck her tongue out at him. "We aren't married. We're living together."
"Awww." Raavi clasped her hands and warded off evil by cracking her knuckles.
"What is this dadi-amma behaviour of your biwi, hein?"
"Pata nahi, jo hai jaisi hai, ab choice nahi hai mere paas." Shiva winked at Shashank, earning a tight punch from Raavi.
"Who's this little bubba?" Richa asked, pulling Janhavi's cheeks which made her giggle.
"That's our baby girl, Janhavi. Janhavi Pandya."
All the chatters in the room zapped to a stop, everyone turning to stare at Shiva and Raavi.
"What-"
"Mazaak hai kya?"
"Sacchi?!"
"Yeah," Raavi looped her arm through Shiva's, "that's our baby."
Pin drop silence later, everyone erupted in excited cheers, tackling Shiva and Raavi into warm hugs.
"You had a baby girl?!"
"You never told us! So mean!"
"How did he treat you during pregnancy?!"
"Saste mein nipta diya kya pura pregnancy?"
"Par ye toh badi bacchi hai. Shaadi ko abhi 2 saal-"
"Relax!" Raavi raised her palms in defense, everyone overlapping each other, before turning to Janhavi, "Baby, why don't you go bring your colouring book to show your new Maasi's and Chachu's? I think that's a great idea, right?"
Janhavi whooped and dashed to find her colouring book, just as Raavi turned back towards their friends. "We adopted her. Uske saamne hum ye zyaada nahi bolte because she feels bad sometimes."
Everyone fell into a moment of silence, before their faces lit up in happiness.
"Pehle bol deti, we would have brought her something!" Richa exclaimed, as Janhavi returned with her books.
"We were supposed to surprise you this weekend, par tum logo ne toh hume hi surprise de diya!" Shiva exclaimed, earning quite the laughter.
"She looks just like Raavi!"
"But she's going to be a Papa's girl, through and through."
"She's going to be so spoiled by all of us, first baby of our group!" Mahi squealed, sitting down on the floor to hear Janhavi's colourful explanations of her drawing.
Shiva and Raavi smiled, watching Janhavi bond with their friends and make them run on their toes, as they catered to her every whim and fancy. Quite a lot of food and talks later, Janhavi announced that she wanted to go to the park with her new Chachus', and shopping with her new Maasis' and not take any naps today, which Raavi denied, but gave in after seeing everyone so eager.
"They're going to spoil her so much." Raavi whispered, getting a little emotional.
"Kitna roti hai, chipkali. Mote mote aansuon ke tanker bahaane ke alava kuch aata bhi hai tujhe?" Shiva teased, pulling her into a hug.
"Shut up. I'm just so happy, Shiva."
"Waise...."
"Kya?"
"Ghar pe ab sirf Maa hai. Tu bole toh abhi tujhe room mein le jaake-"
"Tharki!"
"Sirf tere liye, meri jaan."
.....
"Papa, see my dress!" Janhavi twirled in her pink frock and colourful ribbons.
"It's beautiful, Janu!" He complimented, fixing his watch and grabbing his wallet. "Let's go?"
"Yes!" She exclaimed, skipping her way to the entrance, as Raavi emerged from the room. "Mumma, Shiva Papa is taking me for date. Ok bye!"
Raavi waved at her before turning to Shiva, "Bas beti ko date pe le jaa. Beti ke maa ko mat le jaana kabhi." She grumbled poutily, and Shiva chuckled.
"Hum jaa rahe hai na next weekend date pe?" He kissed her cheek, "Pure do din, mai sirf tera. No disturbance, okay?"
Raavi's face broke out into a smile she tried to stifle, "Okay jaa. Have fun, don't buy her a whole toy store again!"
"Shaam ko lautenge! Bye!"
Soon enough, the daughter-father duo had reached the mall to spend their day out together.
Shiva walked all around the mall, an excited Janhavi clasping his hand and pointing at all the toy stores and play-areas she wanted to visit.
He took her to Kidzania, where she spent an entirety of 3 hours earning all her Kidzos, making Shiva run around and click a million pictures of her in different career uniforms.
"I want to be a police officer!" Janhavi had decided at the end of the day, buying one teddy bear and one toy pistol from the theme-park store.
"You can be anything you want, my love." Shiva ruffled her hair, holding her hand and walking towards the food court.
Janhavi requested to eat McDonald's, which Shiva absolutely despised, but he gave in, ordering her a happy meal which made her quite a happy bunny, munching on a burger with her.
He couldn't leave her alone to buy something else, and there was barely any seating in the mall due to weekend crowds, so he settled for a sloppy burger over his little baby girl's discomfort.
Shiva then walked past a children's store, where there were many different cute dresses and skirts. So he decided to go buy Janu a dress, which turned into 2 princess dresses, 2 slippers and 2 soft, woollen animal jumpers with a hoodie at the back.
My baby girl looks like the cutest little bear cub in her brown jumper, Shiva thought as they rang up the receipt for her shopping spree.
"Papa, is it too many money?" Janhavi asked unsure, biting her nails. "You can give it back to that aunty."
Shiva sat down in front of her and kissed her hands, "Nothing is too much money for you, baby. You just need to tell Papa what you want, and Papa will try his best to get it for you, okay?"
"Okay, Papa." Janhavi smiled, before she remembered what Raavi said, "But Mumma said don't do too much shopping. We did soooooo much shopping!"
"We don't have to tell Mumma." Shiva whispered, putting a finger on his lips, which made Janhavi giggle. "Okay come, let's eat some ice-cream before we go home."
"What is ice-cream?"
Shiva looked at his 4 year old baby girl, surprised that a child this young didn't know what an ice-cream was. It suddenly struck him that she probably wasn't introduced to any ice-cream or good stuff at the aashram, and he felt a little sting in his heart.
His baby girl was deprived of so many things as a child. But no more, he wouldn't allow that anymore as long as he was alive.
"You've not eaten ice-cream?"
Janhavi simply nodded, and Shiva caressed her head, holding her hand and taking her to the FroYo ice-cream parlour.
She peeked over the counter as Shiva grabbed a medium-sized cup, and stood in front of the ice-cream machine.
"You want vanilla, chocolate or strawberry?" Shiva asked, and she pointed to the vanilla ice-cream.
Soon enough, she was asking him to put more sprinkles because she wanted a 'rainbow ice-cream' and a cherry on top, because she saw it like that on TV once.
Shiva paid for the ice-cream, before carrying Janhavi and placing her on the table, sitting on the seat in front of her and handing over her ice-cream.
"All yours, baby."
Janhavi scooped up her ice-cream like a happy penguin, and relished the sweet treat, getting it all over her lips and nose, which Shiva wiped away with his handkerchief.
"You want, Papa?" Janhavi offered a scoop of her dessert, but Shiva just nodded, eventually giving in because Janhavi wanted to 'feed Papa like Papa feeds Janu'
By the time they had reached home, Janhavi had fallen asleep in the car, and Shiva called Raavi to pick up the bags of shopping so that he could carry Janhavi to bed, earning a lot of grumbles and complaints from Raavi for buying a whole store again.
"Bas beti aur patni ko leke jaa bahar," Suman cried dramatically, "Ab iss budhi maa ki kya zaroorat tujhe?"
"Maa," Shiva clicked his tongue, sighing exasperatedly, "Tujhe leke jaa raha hoon na, kal ke satsang pe? Itne drame?!"
Shiva sighed, as he put Janhavi to bed and made faces at his pouty wife, knowing one thing for sure:
All Pandya women were destined to be dramatic for attention.
