Chapter 23: Curiosity Killed The Cat
Jimin didn't think it was possible, but here he was; feeling the shiver race down his spine like water trickling down the leaves of a tree on a rainy day. This was somewhat bittersweet to him. The words Jungkook spoke gave him chills but the warmth of his voice and his arms wrapping around him were quick to cancel out anything bitter. Jimin let out a sigh and continued to bury his face into Jungkook's arms. Normally, he would be too anxious to even hug another like this, yet, it didn't seem to bother him now. Here Jimin was, surprising himself every day by doing something he wouldn't normally do.
It wasn't until he began to blush as he took a deep inhale of Jeon Jungkook's scent. It was a faint smell of cologne; a scent Jimin never knew how much he would begin to treasure. Just as the feeling of comfort and warmth wrapped around him, he couldn't help but to notice the small part of him that was still alarmed by the android. Maybe he still had yet to get used to him, that had to be it, right?
"Did you hear me, Jimin?" Jungkook asked into a soft whisper as his head slowly pulled back. Finding a way to point his face towards Park Jimin and stand in his personal space every time as if it was his job to do so. A job he had no fear taking part in and managed to do it so well. "I'm here... for you... only you..."
Jimin's eyes fixed onto Jungkook's. There, he caught onto the slight hue of the dark green shifting into a light blue color within the windows to his existence. With the sight of Jungkook's eyes shifting from green to blue instantly, Jimin recalled that Jungkook said his eyes displayed his emotions; blue was when he was calm, but green was when he became mischievous. This made Jimin curious as to what caused him to feel like that if they only hugged and shared little words that carried heavy meanings.
As Jimin continued to blush and trace the irises of Jungkook's gaze with his own eyes, Jungkook made a soft smile and leaned his head in closer to the point where Jimin felt his heart race at the sight of seeing the android this close. In fact, he knew what would come after and he knew the lack of distance would lead into something else, but the fear finally came back to him and caused the human to freeze up and become at a loss for words.
"That's your cue... say something to me..." Jungkook's raspy whispers shifted into a tempting growl that continuously shot electrifying shocks through Jimin's body.
Abruptly, Jungkook was able to pick up on the way Jimin's chest moved quickly into his panicked breathing until his head fell forward and his face buried into his chest again. Avoiding the tension that was shared between the two for that solid minute.
"No comment..." Jimin replied and smiled softly to himself as his face continued to be left buried into Jungkook's comforting chest. "You knock all the words out of my mouth... quit it..."
"Speechless... I like that I leave you speechless," Jungkook added. His face continued to carry the smirk as his free hand found its way back to Jimin in order to caress his hair back carefully. "Can... I protect you every night?"
"You could... but I'd rather put a stop to it. I wouldn't want you to-"
"Shh...." Jungkook hushed the human before him and kept his hands softly combing Jimin's hair. "Maybe soon it will stop... but until then, I live next door. It doesn't bother me to stay here for you. Just tell me I could..."
"Okay..." Jimin answered.
He couldn't tell if he truly wanted Jungkook there or only said it to make the android happy. He hoped to become more independent and free, but Jungkook took a step forward which led to the young man having to take a step back. Even if he didn't think having Jungkook here would help him with his issues, he would blush at the idea of laying in the same bed as the android. He would blush at the idea and for once, he was glad that the empty spot on his bed wouldn't feel so empty now. Maybe protecting the human gave the android purpose despite the fact that he didn't do much back at home. Jimin only figured that this friendship was just innocent and harmless of course, it just had to be that.
At the same time, Hoseok kept moving himself back and forth on a rolling chair as his face pointed upwards, impatiently counting the seconds over and over again in his head. The more he remained there, the more concerned he became when his beautiful brown gaze would bounce from the clock displayed on one of the dual monitors, to the body of the android laying over the operating table.
"Did I... kill him?" Hoseok asked as he raised a brow and quickly turned around to face a screen of the computer. "That's weird... I'm the only one who could read the code and adjust it... did he... change it?" Hoseok questioned into soft whispers until he snapped his fingers. "Oh darn, I killed him... oh well... they can easily replace this one-"
Instantly, he heard a chime from behind him. It was a soft chime that resembled the sound of a computer starting up once again and that caused Hoseok to smile to himself.
"I never doubted myself," Hoseok said and patted himself on the back the second he listened to Taehyung start up his system for the first time in a while. This caused the man to quickly stand up and approach the cushioned table where Taehyung remained.
The second Hoseok approached the android, his eyes met with Taehyung's gaze which only kept a loading screen in both gazes while the meter loaded quicker than before. The sight of this left Hoseok to continue his daring smile and become pleased at this accomplishment.
"Startup successful," Taehyung spoke out and seconds after he said that, his eyes closed and opened with his usual blue gaze that scanned the room; trying to recognize the place he was in.
"Don't bother trying to recognize this place, you've never been here before," the older man mentioned and toned down the smile he kept. "How do you feel?"
"Where am I?" Taehyung asked and sat up quickly. "Why do you have me here?" Taehyung wondered and continued to look around as Hoseok only paced around the android just to observe him and see if there were any more flaws that needed fixing. "And why have you removed my shirt? What.... What did you..." Taehyung said and slowly looked over to the dual monitors and the many wires that were leading from the table all the way to the computers. "What did you do to me?"
"I fixed you. You're welcome,"
"This isn't my charging station nor any departments for androids... did you... tamper with my system? What are you?" Taehyung wondered and gawked at the man before him. "What did you do to me?"
"Stop repeating your question, I heard you the first time," the man started and stopped pacing around just to stand closer to Taehyung, grabbing him by the hand and lifting it just to see if there were any flaws with the way that he moved. "Don't worry about what I am. Also, like I said before, I did not tamper with you, I fixed you. Your wires are replaced and fixed, you will no longer have any issues accessing your personality data, your energy has been upgraded and now you can last a little longer than most androids out there. You're welcome."
"Impossible...."
"Possible, my little android. I also threw in a surprise upgrade as well. However, I'm not going to tell you what it is... I'll try to make it fun for you and let you discover it on your own," Hoseok continued to speak to the android as he resumed pacing around the creation. "Go on, express yourself."
"I was perfectly fine..."
"No, you weren't. You powered off right in front of me so I had to do something. Lucky for you I've worked with similar versions of you before."
"Do you... work for my creator?" Taehyung questioned and sat up right after, awaiting a response as his blue gaze locked onto the human before him. "No one else knows this code but him..."
"Worked... I worked for Kim Seokjin before. Also, I hate to burst your bubble, but Seokjin isn't the only one who knows the coding for you androids, I know it too." Hoseok mentioned and watched Taehyung's brows raise and his eyes widen. That's when Hoseok knew he did a great job with the new upgrade. "Anyway, tell me Taehyung, are you an expressive android?"
"Not really... that isn't in my system, I could only carry a few expressions but not enough to exaggerate them. Why are you asking?"
"Oh, for no reason in particular," Hoseok replied and stopped pacing around the android to then guide his gaze down the back of his spine. This caused Taehyung to flinch and shiver right after. Sensing the stare he was given.
"What... was that?" Taehyung asked innocently as Hoseok only smirked before raising his hand up to the shoulder of the creation and patted him gently. "What did you do to me-"
"Don't worry about it, Taehyung. You're perfectly fine," Hoseok assured the curious android. "You'll find that your experience communicating with humans will be much easier than before. But it's a surprise."
"I... I'm going to the department to get this removed," Taehyung mentioned and quickly stood up. "Where is my shirt?"
"You can't go to the department, if you do, there is a chance that they might see that you've been tampered with and shut you off. Oh Taehyung, you have no other choice but to stay with what I gave you. But don't worry, it's nothing horrible. You will barely notice it. In fact, you've just been using it and didn't even realize it yet."
"Just tell me..."
"Nope, it would be far better when you realize it. I believe all androids should have this built into their system. It really makes them stand out and feel more... human."
"You live with Jungkook... so maybe you've already tampered with his system too... is that why he's a little different?" Taehyung quickly asked as Hoseok took a moment to find the answers to that question. "Why so silent?"
"Curiosity killed the cat... here's your shirt," the man concluded and walked over to the android to toss him the shirt he was wearing. "Go home."
"You can't just send me home! I have questions and you need to answer them!" Taehyung began to show impatience towards the human and that alone caused him to stop right at the spot and realize a few differences to the way he reacted to Hoseok's words. This left him to catch onto the idea that he wasn't the same he was before and became concerned with the way he was feeling. "Did you... do this to Jungkook too?"
"You can leave now, Taehyung. I'll walk you out."
Taehyung knew Hoseok wasn't going to say anything else and figured that this man tiptoed around many secrets. He was a puzzle Taehyung only longed to find the many missing pieces to but yet, he could never continue bothering the human because at the end of the day, Hoseok was human and he was an android. One of them was to respect the other no matter what happened and Taehyung understood that completely.
For now, Taehyung walked with Hoseok and took note of every conversation they shared before and stored it into his database. Knowing well that this was something that he would continue to pick at until he was to completely understand what Jungkook was in order to see if Jimin was truly safe with him. At the end of the day, it was the living humans that were important to the existence of androids and this left Taehyung to wonder if Jungkook was the type of android that believed that too. He just had to, right?
