Mate

I had just changed schools.

That's when I met him. That's when I first saw him.

My eyes had met his in an instant, as if he was the only thing that mattered in that moment. I remember letting out something like a mix between a sigh and a gasp. I remember standing there, in front of the class. I remember him walking towards me with that look in his eyes... I remember him smiling, white teeth laughing at me, eyes bright.

But the most beautiful thing I remembered was when he uttered the magical word...

"Mate."

Jonas

"Leave me the fuck alone!"

"Jonas, please. Just listen to me! I really didn't mean anything I said-"

I slammed the door open, causing a few distraught looks from fellow students. "Fuck off, Luke."

"I'm sorry! I shouldn't  have talked to you like that, and I shouldn't have listened to her! I know, okay, now I do. I realize that I was totally wrong! I was a fucking dick! But just... I'm sorry, okay? There's a really good explanation for what I did. "

Luke stopped me. He put his hands on my shoulders and turned me around. I turned my eyes away from him, not wanting to look into those wild red eyes.

"Please, just say something." His voice trembled and I could feel his eyes searching my face.

"I told you. I want you to leave me the fuck alone." I shrugged his hands off me.

"And I can't do that." He shook his head. "I can't let you go... I can't let you reject me."

"You rejected me. The moment you kissed that bitch and ignored me, the moment you lost all fucking faith in me-in us." My hands balled into fists just thinking about it. "You. Rejected. Me."

Then, with one final death glare in his direction, I stomped off to my first class of the day.

"Can you explain to me why you're so happy?"

Luke looked at me with a secretive smile. "You'll see," he said.

I furrowed my eyebrows, holding his hand tighter while we walked through the school hall, on our way to class. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"That you'll see. You know, with your eyes," he teased me.

"But why can't you tell me?" I whined. "You know I hate these kind of things!"

"Just wait and see, baby. It'll be worth it!" He had said it with so much excitement, I couldn't but believe him.

We arrived to class and sat down next to each other, waiting on the teacher.

A thought popped into my mind.

I turned to peek at Luke, wiggling my eyebrows. "My birthday is next week."

Finally, he seemed to focus, a grin coming onto his handsome face. "I know. I have some very special things for you planned."

I frowned at him, knowing he wouldn't tell me what he had planned. "You're really pushing it today."

His grin widened and he even had the nerve to wink at me.

I was just about to pester him again about what he had planned, but just then the door opened. Instead of Mrs.Cullen, in came a brunette with blue eyes.

To be honest, she was really beautiful and I would have totally crushed on her if I was straight, but oh wait, I'm not. (Yesterday night totally proves that.)

"Luke!"

I focused back on the moment to see that she had her arms wrapped around my Luke. Okay, so I wasn't a jealous person, but what was this witch doing with my mate????!!!

"Ashley!" He said, excitement apparent in his voice.

They hugged for a few moments before departing. Luke turned back around and grinned at me.

"Jonas, this is Ashley, my best friend of all times. And Ashley this is Jonas, my lovely mate." I quirked my eyebrows at 'best friends of all times', because I had never even heard of her. He did tell me that he had a good friend, but 'best friend of all times'... he never said it like that.

Ashley's sharp blue eyes focused on me. "I've heard so much about you!" She giggled, embracing me.

Can't say the same.

"We're gonna be great friends!" She gushed, looking at me with something I couldn't really explain at that moment.

What a fucking lie.

A week later, it was my birthday. I came into school, already disappointed because Luke hadn't come see me at home. To be honest, he hadn't seen me at all lately. He wasn't there anymore.

Always busy with his best friend. No time for me anymore.

It sucked balls. (Something I hadn't done in a long time.)

I went searching everywhere for him, and didn't find him.

Where the fuck was he?

He wasn't in our classes, he just wasn't in the freaking school. I began panicking. Luke was a goody two shoes, always in class, never too late.

"Hey Connor!" I yelled at the brunette guy who was walking in my direction with his phone in his  hands.

His eyes moved from his device to me, an eyebrow raised. "What's up, J."

"I was just looking for Luke. You seen him somewhere?"

He frowned. "He isn't with you? Thought it was your birthday?"

"Well yeah, that's why I'm asking since your his best friend and all. We made plans, but I haven't been able to reach him all day," I explained, only getting more worried.

"Haven't seen that guy for a good minute," he shrugged. "But with those photos I've seen, you don't need to worry."

Photos?

"What do you mean, Connor?"

"Here," he said, while handing me his phone.

There he was. My Luke.

My Luke that was having the most of fun without me.

My Luke that was clearly kissing somebody that wasn't me.

My Luke that had promised me we would spend this day together.

My Luke that had obviously completely forgot my birthday.

My Luke that wasn't even my Luke.

––––––——

Knocking angrily on the familiar door, I waited till he opened it.

I was so pissed, so livid. This whole dude cheated on me—on my freaking birthday

With–with that?!

Anybody close by could see how fake that witch is! ANYBODY! Now my suspicions were only confirmed.

I just didn't expect him to fall for it. Guess the mate bond wasn't that strong.

The door finally opened, and an innocent looking Luke came out.

Innocent my perky ass.

"Hey baby—"

"Can you explain what this is, you asshole?" I shoved my phone in his face, the photo of him kissing his bestie on it.

He narrowed his eyes and something weird suddenly passed in his eyes.

"What? You're fucking spying on me?!"

I flinched, because that's not the reaction that I expected. Denial, sadness... regret? But this guy was... angry?

"Are you hearing yourself, Luke? You cheated on me. On your mate. You think that's normal?"  I just looked at him with pure shock. Was this the guy I fell inlove with?

"Is she in with you, huh? Is she there?!" I tried to push past him to look inside, but he pushed me right back and growled.

"That's none of your fucking business," he coldly stated.

And there I stood. The fool.

"This was a mistake. We were a mistake. The moon Goddess must have fucked up somewhere," he narrowed his eyes. "I don't want you anymore, Jonas."

Then reject me, I wanted to say. But I didn't dare, because I was too scared.

"Luke..."

"Goodbye, Jonas."

The door shut and

Present

So that's what happened. He cheated on me, said those things to me and suddenly after a week, he wants me back. He says he wants to explain.

What the fuck is there to explain?

Now I'm just chilling in my room, trying not to think about him and cry.

My parents went out to a restaurant to celebrate I don't even know what, and being siblingless, I'm all alone.

I was just about to head down to the kitchen to get some snacks when I heard this agitating noise.

Knocking on my window.

Of course I already knew who it was. I could smell him from miles away.

When he saw me, his red eyes lightened up a little. I came closer and he smiled, but when I shut the curtains, I could hear him yelling.

"Jonas, please, you just need to listen to me for a while. You need to understand why I did what I did," he begged.

So different from the Luke I had heard a week ago. He sounded like my Luke. The one I used to know. Or thought I knew.

"If you are coming here to reject me, just do it quickly. I have other plans," I said, inspecting my nails.

"I'm not—I'm not fucking rejecting you. We're not rejecting each other, okay?"

I rolled my eyes, but secretly sighed in relief. "Just tell me what you want to say and then get the hell away from me."

"Can't you open the curtains first?" He asked.

I couldn't see him, but I could clearly hear him shuffling his feet.

"I know it's going to sound crazy, but who you saw last week, wasn't me."

"Oh yeah, that was you're twin brother Duke. Rhymes op dick," I scoffed.

"That doesn't rhyme, baby."

I scoffed again, ignoring the butterflies in my stomach at the familiar nickname.

"Ashley is a witch."

"I know. That's what I've been calling her all the time," I nodded.

"No, I mean, she's a witch. Like she can do magic and spells. She did one on me."

I blinked for a while, my brain not connecting the dots immediately.  Slowly, I neared the curtains. "Are you saying what I think you're saying?"

"If you think what I'm saying is what you're thinking, then you're thinking what I'm saying," he countered.

I ripped the curtains open. "You don't... hate me?"

"I could never hate you baby. Never," he said with a deep frown. "I love you so much, and I'm sorry I hurt you. I didn't mean to, it wasn't me. The spell just completely messed over my head, I just... wasn't in control."

I opened the window and leaned a bit out of it, still kind of hesitant.  "What you said yesterday... or what you didn't—I just, it hurt a lot," I told him. "For a second, I thought I'd die."

"I'm not letting you die, baby. And  I'm sorry. I'll never hurt you again, never let myself get into a situation like this again. I just want to make you happy, be happy with you and—"

I kissed him before he could say anything else.

The kiss was hard and healed all of my wounds. His words still repeated in my head, but with the right dose of loving, everything would be fixed.

"I want to be happy with you, too," I said with a smile. He smiled back and held me in his arms.

And later, when we lay cuddled up in my bed, I couldn't help but ask a question.

"Where's the witch?"

"Dead," he deadpanned.

First, I laughed because it really was a good joke. Then I saw his blank look and I knew he wasn't making any kind of joke.

"You killed her."

"She fell off a cliff," he shrugged.

On his face wasn't any kind of remorse, and to be honest she deserved it. Every being knew the punishment on trying to separate two mates, was death.

"Don't worry about her," he mumbled, his breath hitting my face. "We're together now and I'm never letting anyone take you from me."

I giggled. "I love you, Luke."

"I love you, my mate."
