FOURTEEN. we were something don't you think so?
McKenna liked to think she knew Five better than anyone because at one point, she did. Nobody knew the adult Five. They only knew the younger version of him. McKenna knew a man that was deep and guarded but he really just wanted someone to understand him and she did. He was ruthless but was never cruel to her. He poured out his heart to her and that's not what he was raised to do. Five was raised to be a hero, a person to save the world, a person to make his father look good. But she pulled him away from that.
They needed each other no matter how hard they tried avoiding it. McKenna just wished she didn't screw it up.
There was only one place she knew he'd be for coffee. Griddy's Doughnuts was the best spot in the city for coffee and donuts. She saw him sitting at the counter when she walked in. "I thought I'd find you here."
Her voice caused the hairs on Five's neck to stand up. He didn't turn his head but her footsteps for closer and he saw her black dress from the corner of his eye. She sat in the empty chair beside him. "How'd you figure?"
McKenna shrugged. "They have the best coffee here."
Five looked around him. "I used to come here when I was a kid. Me and all my siblings. We used to eat donuts until we threw up. Luther and Diego would also fight to see who could eat the most." He told her. Finally, he looked at her, seeing her engage in the story. "Why did you come?"
"Where you go, I go." She stated.
Five pursed his lips. It was so hard to be angry at her when she was close enough for him to see the dark brown that swirled around her irises.
A man entered the coffee shop and sat at the end of the counter. McKenna and Five looked away from each other. Agnes came out from the back of the shop. "Sorry, sink was clogged." She said with a chuckle. "So, what'll it be?"
"Uh, give me a chocolate eclair." The man ordered.
She wrote it down on a notepad. "Mm-hmm. Sure." She pointed between Five and McKenna. " Can I get the kids a glass of milk or something?"
The pair narrowed their eyes. "The kid wants coffee. Black."
"I'm also a whole different ethnicity than them." McKenna added.
Agnes chuckled awkwardly. "Cute kid." She said to the guy.
Five smiled at her which made her quickly got back to the back. He turned his head and saw the embroidery stitched onto the man's uniform. "Don't remember this place being such a shithole. I used to come here as a kid. Used to sneak out with my brothers and sisters and eat doughnuts till we puked. Simpler times, huh?"
McKenna gave him a weird look as well as the unknown man. "Eh, I suppose."
Agnes came back with the eclair and coffee. "I got his." He said and paid for Five's coffee.
He smiled. "Thanks. You must know your way around the city,"
"I hope so. I've been driving it for 20 years."
"Good. I need an address."
McKenna knew Five was hiding something but she didn't know how to get him to crack. He still barely looked at her which was just hurting her feelings even more. "What are you playing at, Hargreeves?" She asked after the man left the donut shop.
Five just shrugged. "Nothing."
"You're lying."
"McKenna," he sighed and looked at her. "Don't worry about it."
His dismissive attitude towards her made her face fall. "Why are you treating me like this?"
"I'm not treating you like anything."
"Exactly. You're not treating me like anything." She emphasized.
Five looked at her again. "I can't tell you, McKenna. You don't understand."
But she did. She understood better than anyone. "Neither do you."
That struck a nerve. Before Five could say anything else, the door opened and he looked at the golden bell on the table. McKenna turned her head and saw a group of men enter the donut shop with weapons. Her eyes widened. "Well, that was fast."
"Five." She uttered.
"I thought I'd have more time before they found me."
She quickly looked at him.
"Okay. So let's all be professional about this, yeah?" One of the men spoke. "On your feet and come with us. They want to talk to you." He said to Five."
"I've got nothing to say." Five dismissed him.
"It doesn't have to go this way."
He looked at her. "McKenna. I need you to go invisible." He instructed calmly.
Her eyes widened again. "What?"
"Do as I say and go invisible." He said again, almost pleading with her.
McKenna looked between him and the men with the weapons. She quickly blinked to the other side of the counter and ducked behind it. She turned invisible then stood back up just in time to see Five stab the guy in the neck with a knife.
Gunfire went off and McKenna screamed. She ducked down and Five appeared on top of the table. "Hey, assholes!" He yelled and got their attention.
More gunfire went off and she was filled with confusion and fear. McKenna rose again from behind the counter and saw Five snap another one of the men's necks. Then he killed another, and another. More gunfire.
She quickly realized how helpless she was being. She remembered her abilities and made herself viable again. Using her telekinetic power, she made one of the guns fly out of a guy's hand and then and snapped his neck right after.
Five immediately turned to her. "What the hell?" He yelled.
One of the guys aimed his gun at her. McKenna quickly threw him back into the nearest wall. Five blinked and grabbed him when he least expected it. He grabbed his neck and snapped it with ease.
When it was over, she looked around the destroyed shop. Blood trailed from her nose to her chin but she didn't bother to wipe it away. Dead bodies and glass laid everywhere. Blood splattered all over the walls. She was at a loss for words.
Five stood and turned to her with a glare. "What did I say? I told you to stay hidden." He said out of anger.
"I helped you." She glared back.
"I didn't ask for your help." He muttered and picked up a device from the floor. He motioned his head to the counter. "Come here."
She narrowed her eyes. "What's going on?"
Five lifted his sleeve and handed her the knife he had. "I need you to cut my arm." He stated.
She looked at him like he was crazy. "Excuse me?"
"McKenna, please, I need you to do this."
"No. Not until you tell me what's going on." She refused.
"Must you be so goddamn stubborn?" He hissed through his teeth.
Her eyes turned sad. She looked again at the dead bodies around them.
Five lightened up. "Please." He spoke calmly that time."
McKenn looked at him again. She sighed and took the knife. She killed hundreds of people in her life. She showed no remorse for any of them. But it was so different when it came to Five. "Can't believe I'm doing this."
He pointed to where he wanted her to cut. Holding her breath, McKenna dug the blade into his skin. Five yelled in pain and instinctively grabbed her other arm. She made a small incision but her hands were shaking horribly.
She watched him dig into her arm and she cringed. Then, McKenna heard a ticking noise and she realized it was a chip. She looked him in the eye. "I know you hate me and you don't want to tell me anything. But we just killed these people and there's a chip in your arm. I deserve to know what's going on." She spoke firmly.
Five didn't fight her that time. He stared back at her in defeat.
McKenna stormed out of the donut shop with a scarlet face. Five quickly ran after her, calling her name. "McKenna! MCKENNA!"
She didn't stop walking. "Why didn't you tell me?" She snapped.
Five dropped the chip down the sewer drain. "Because I knew this would be your reaction. I didn't know how to tell you." He stated smartly.
McKenna swung around and faced him. "So you wait until she sends a group of her followers to kill you? Like she was going to kill me?"
"You don't get it, McKenna—"
"I get it more than anybody! What the hell is wrong with you?" She screamed while pointing to herself.
"You left me!" He shouted back. His arms flared by his side. She went quiet. "Okay, you don't understand what's happening because you left!"
"I left so that neither of us would get hurt."
"But I did get hurt, Kenna." Five said back and stepped closer to her. "You have no idea how I was feeling the entire time you were gone. What I had to go through to forget about you. And even then, you still haunted me, and that's worse than killing people."
McKenna gripped her hair and groaned out loud. "You make it sound like I wanted to leave, Five." She shouted again. "I fought against every bone in my body not to leave but I had no choice. Don't try to tell me that I don't understand, you asshole. I sacrificed everything."
"Even us." Five said bitterly.
McKenna stared at him with teary eyes and a tightened jaw. "That's in the past, right?" She uttered his words and blinked away.
Once again, she struck a nerve. Five's eyes lingered on where she once stood. She thought she understood but she didn't. Five did everything to not think about McKenna, to erase her from his memory because he thought it would hurt less. But it was always another day waking up alone, her silhouette lingering in his sheets.
But they were something. They were in love. Five found himself throwing pennies in a pool and if his wishes came true, it would've been her.
