III. you're a cowboy like me
THREE. you're a cowboy like me
McKenna couldn't help but be impressed by him. Five's skills were powerful and a part of her hated it. But she also thought she could use it for her advantage. So she learned everything about him from his family to the mission he'd been on. Five told her of his family in minor detail and it seemed to hurt him to talk about his siblings at all. But the way he spoke of them was heartfelt, and he missed them, which made McKenna feel jealous in a way.
She was an only child for all her life. The only home she ever knew was the Commission. The only parent she'd known was the Handler. Even if the Hargreeves were only somewhat of an experiment, they were still a family and family was something she didn't know of.
Five wiped his sweaty hands on the material of his black suit. His hands were always sweaty but the rest of him was always cold. He felt uncomfortable in the suit like it wasn't meant for him. But he knew the job was meant for him and he'd shown the Handler and everyone else how useful he was to them. He wanted to be the best.
When he walked around the corner, he saw McKenna leaned against the wall of the building with a cigarette between her thin fingers. Smoke escaped from a small gap in between her lips. She'd been away on a mission the last few days. "McKenna." He spoke her name shortly.
She looked his way and nodded. "Five." She took another puff.
He walked up the steps. He pointed to the cigarette. "Got another one of those?" He asked.
McKenna hummed. "You smoke?" She asked and reached into her pocket for her pack.
"Everyone needs a stress reliever of some sort."
She grinned. "I agree." She took out her lighter.
Five leaned forward and she lit the cigarette, her eyes looking into his for half a second. He inhaled the smoke and slowly let it out. "I heard that your mission was successful."
"Always is." McKenna responded with a smirk. She took another inhale of her cigarette. "Poor old guy though, I gotta say."
Five laughed. "I'm sure you've done worse."
"Like you wouldn't believe."
The Handler came outside with her heels clicking "McKenna, Five, great, you're together!" She said with a bright grin. "I need you both to come with me."
Internally groaning, McKenna dropped her cigarette and smashed it under her blue heel. The pair followed her into the building.
The Handler led them into her office. "I'm very happy to hear that both of your missions were successful." She complimented.
At the same time, the two of them smirked.
"Because of this, I've decided that I want your next mission to be together."
The smirks dropped. McKenna hadn't worked with Five yet for a very good reason. She didn't like working with people.
"I can sense you're not happy." Said the Handler.
Five and McKenna looked at each other. "Well. . ." He began to say.
"We've never worked together."
He pointed at her. "Right."
"And no offense, Handler, but I work better alone." McKenna insisted, which made him look at her, slightly offended.
The Handler laughed. "I know that, McKenna. But I have great instincts and my instincts are telling me that the two of you together will make history for us as The Commission. You've been here for years, McKenna. We know what you can do. Five, your skills are unmatched. I can't think of a better pairing."
The two of them went quiet and McKenna looked over at Five. He was slumped in his chair in thought, his suit pants crinkling. Like her, he wasn't the best at working with people. Even when he was young and trained with his siblings, Five always worked better alone.
Perhaps that attitude is what led him to being stuck in the apocalypse in the first place.
The Handler clapped her hands. "So, what do ya say?"
McKenna looked at Five again. The man was in deep thought. There were two sides to the offer. One side was that if she agreed to go on a mission with him, he would slow her down. She knew what she was doing. She was good at it. She didn't want Five to mess her up.
The other side was that Five was smart. He was clever and fast. And they had the same power. If she had his help, it would make her reputation as the best assassin even better.
The Handler waited for an answer. McKenna inhaled a deep breath. "What's the mission?"
McKenna traveled a lot of places over the years for missions, to years way before her time. But 1914, seventy five years before she was born, was completely different. She stuck out like a sore thumb in her all black pantsuit and her blue high heels. Her dark hair was in its usual high ponytail.
Everywhere around her stood women in long, full, frilly dresses and ridiculous hairstyles. 1914 Sarajevo. "Well, we blend in well." She spoke sarcastically.
"I'd this is going to work, we need to blend in with the crowd." Said Five, eyeing the ridiculously dressed men he saw on the streets.
She adjusted her black jacket. "You're right." She took off walking down the street. "We need to change."
"Change?" Five repeated. He quickly followed her. "McKenna, you realize this 1914, right? The cost of stuff here is different than where we are. We can't pay for this."
McKenna paused and turned around. "Who said anything about paying?" She smirked.
One positive to being an assassin was guns. One wave of the weapon and you got whatever you wanted. McKenna left the clothing store wearing a deadly tight corset that made her feel like she could pass out. The blouse she wore was frilly and white with puffy sleeves and she wore a skirt that went all the way down to her ankles. She took the hair tie out of her hair and let the strands fall.
Five walked out wearing an all brown suit snd black shoes. He wore a beige tweed flat cap. He looked her up and down. "Well, you look nice." He said to annoy her.
She gave him a blank stare. Say that again and I'll out a bullet between your eyes."
She walked off, cursing to herself about how she couldn't breathe in the corset and Five followed her again — smiling.
McKenna and Five's mission was to take out the men planning to assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir presumptive to the Austrian throne. They did their research throughout their time in Sarajevo. Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, were assassinated while visiting the capital of Bosnia.
The assassins stood amongst the crowd on the Appel Quay. From the distance, McKenna could see the motorcade traveling down the road. Five spotted a few men wearing all black suits and hats. "Assassins, then o'clock." He spoke subtly to the woman by his side.
She followed his eye, seeing what he was seeing, and she nodded. "Let's get to work." She declared. McKenn looked around to make sure nobody was watching before she turned herself invisible. She teleported behind one of the men standing closest to the Appel Quay. She waited for Five to appear.
A few seconds later, Five appeared behind the man and punched him in the back of the head, knowing him out cold. Before he hit the ground, McKenna used her telekinesis to make the bomb in his pocket fly into her hand.
The commotion that Five created caused people around them to scream and scurry. The black haired agent attempted to pull a gun on him but Five blink out of view and appeared behind him, kicking him in the back.
Still keeping herself invisible, McKenna threw the bomb as far as she cold and it exploded, causing all the vehicles to crash into each other and blow up. It sent more people into a frenzy and they started running to get away from the fire. That's when Five took out his gun and aimed it at the Archduke, killing both him and his wife.
McKenna quickly grabbed him and teleported them away from the scene. They appeared behind one of the buildings where nobody was around. The explosion caused a ringing to go off in her ears but she ignored it. Five's face was covered in blood and his hair was disheveled. He's lost the flat cap somewhere along the way. "Did we do it? Did we succeed?" She questioned while taking deep breaths.
Five quickly nodded, equally out of breath. "I'd say so."
She ran her hands through her hair. Then she rested them in her hips. "Well, that was eventful." She spoke the obvious.
He exhaled a laugh. "It was. Had a great time."
She grinned. "So did I."
It went quiet for a minute. "Want to get a drink?" Asked Five.
McKenna quickly nodded. "Hell yeah. I need to get out of this corset first."
