CHAPTER TWENTY
"AT LEAST YOU LOVED ME."
JUNE 9, 2015 — 11:11 AM
"Strike!" Read across the top of the screen, Yeonjun jumping up in victory as he celebrated. I rolled my eyes, crossing my arms as he moved past me. "Loooooo~ser!" Grumbling, he shoved my shoulder with his, my eyes following his dancing body as he stood behind me. "I'm going to win!"
"I don't care if you win or not, just shut your trap," I snapped, almost frowning. I tried to do that cool pose Yeonjun did to get that strike, but the more I did it, the more I felt I looked awkward. I heard his soft snickering from behind me, my eyes glaring at him through the reflection of the bowling ball. "Shut your fucking mouth."
"Ayyy~ no need to curse at me," He shrugged—and as his hands slid down my forearm to move my fingers into the proper hole, his hands felt as cold as snow. His other hand placed his arm around my waist, moving my body around to his free will. Soon letting go, I was already a somewhat stiff mess, unable to keep my stare on anything for too long. "Relax a bit—and you'll probably get a spare at least."
I rapidly blinked, biting my lower lip before loosening up my body, shaking my head a bit before focusing on the pins. "If it makes you feel any better," He added, making me glance his way. "Think that it's Beomgyu—he humiliated and embarrassed you in front of everyone."
I gulped, looking back to the ten pins. Beomgyu. The person who embarrassed me. Throwing it as hard as I could, I watched as it spun and spun—only for it to land in the gutter and roll away. I stiffened, standing up straight as Yeonjun almost laughed. He turned me around, staring down while patting my shoulders. "Well, it was a good attempt. At least we know you can't even hurt a fly."
"Shut up," I mumbled, frowning as I moved past him to grab another bowling ball. However, my phone was ringing, so diverting my attention towards it, I picked it up. Seeing Beomgyu read across the top almost scared me, spinning towards Yeonjun. He tilted his head until I showed him the screen, the boy's eyes widening. "Do I—"
"Don't tell him," Yeonjun interrupted, slowly backing away. I nodded, answering the phone as I pressed it up to my ear.
"Hello~"
"What took you so long to answer?" Beomgyu questioned, probably shoving his hands in his pockets. "Are you so busy on a Sunday? You're usually at home, eating breakfast right now."
"Hey, I'm not that lazy," I defended, causing him to chuckle. "I'm just out and about, getting fresh air. Don't worry, Mr. Jealousy—I'll be safe from the scary hands of men."
"Whatever," He huffed as I sat down, watching Yeonjun claim me a spare. I smiled, shaking my head as I stifled my laugh. "I was wondering if you'd want to go somewhere after graduation—you know, a trip with the guys and me!"
"Oh? Where?" I asked, glancing over at Yeonjun. "Is it near our high school?"
"No, we'll be going to Jeju!" Beomgyu squeaked, causing me to tilt my head. "Don't worry, I'll pay for your ferry ticket. Soobin is going to drive the four of us—and if Yeonjun hyung is coming, then he can drive himself."
"That sounds cold," I shook my head, sipping my water. "You should ask him soon, then. Tell him the details, and I'll decide things with my parents—but I'm sure they'll say yes. They're always busy anyway."
"Got it, bye love~!" He cooed, probably smiling through the phone. "I love you so, so, so~ much."
"Uh-huh, got it," I snickered, hearing his soft whine. "Alright, I love you too. Ask Yeonjun soon."
"Got it!" He ended the call, Yeonjun coming to sit next to me.
"What's he calling about?" Yeonjun asked, causing me to chuckle as I put my phone away. "Something important?"
"Somewhat, possibly," I answered, standing up for my turn. "He should be calling you soon—" Like clockwork, Yeonjun's phone rung, both of us exchanging gazes. "There you go!"
"Ah, okay," He whispered, grabbing his phone before answering. "What's up, idiot." I almost blew away our cover as I walked away, grabbing a beautiful lilac bowling ball. Trying to reimagine Yeonjun's stance, it was almost as if I could feel his cold touch on my forearm and side again. I fixed my posture and relaxed—and as I threw the ball down the lane...
One knocked over the next, then the next—and lastly, as the second to last one tilted against the last one—it soon became a strike. "Yes!" I whispered under my breath, dancing in victory as I spun around to Yeonjun. His mouth was agape, staring at the screen as he continued to talk to Beomgyu.
"Yeah, yeah," Yeonjun nodded, rubbing his eyes as if he almost couldn't believe I got a strike. Looking back up to me, I stuck my tongue out at him, causing him to roll his eyes. "Yeah, I can go, don't worry about it. I'll bring my own car and pay for stuff. Tell Soobin that I'll pay for parking at the ferry—he doesn't have to worry. Yeah. Yeah! Okay, bye, see you soon."
Ending the call, I skipped over to him. "I got a strike, see?!"
"I saw very well, love," He scoffed in disbelief, sticking his phone in his pocket. "Well, good for you, I guess. Since our turn's almost over, should we go out to eat together after this?" Checking the time, I nodded. It was almost lunchtime, and this fool didn't buy me any breakfast though he offered to come bowling with me.
"Sure, where to?"
"You can choose," Yeonjun said, causing me to nod and lean back against the chair, letting him go again. "You're my favorite girl, you should always choose."
"Favorite girl, my ass, that's always your excuse because you're indecisive," I mumbled, reading through restaurants on my phone. "Just say you're not that interested in girls and move on!"
"Hey, I'm complimenting you and you're like this!?" Yeonjun scoffed, scolding me as he pointed at me. "Shut up and find a restaurant! I'm trying to be nice by letting you choose."
"Couldn't care less!" I exclaimed, sticking out my tongue at him.
"Why, you—" He paused, glaring at me. "Ah whatever, you're not worth fighting. Besides, Beomgyu would kill me."
"Hehe," I snickered, scrolling again.
Hehe, indeed. Hehe.
I sipped my iced tea, sitting in front of Yeonjun. He stared at me, both of us raising our eyebrows as the staring contest tension grew. Suddenly, I blinked, causing me to hiss and him to laugh. "I won, as always~" Yeonjun did his little dance with his ass stuck to the seat, trying not to embarrass himself as the waiters passed by. "Anyway, do you want a blooming onion?"
"You always ask me these kinds of things," I tilted my head swiftly, shrugging. "Get whatever you want, I'll eat anything. I'm hungry, tired...up—" I paused my words, Yeonjun perking up at the first syllable of the last word. He already knew, there was no point in stopping.
"Upset?" He furrowed his eyebrows, leaning forward with his orbs full of worry. "Why are you upset? Are you still thinking about back in February, when Beomgyu got into that accident?"
"...It's not that," I trailed off, itching the crown of my head. I felt like I could trust Yeonjun with this, not only Taehyun. "Can I tell you something? But promise me you won't tell anyone else... because only Taehyun would know besides you."
"Go ahead, tell me what's on your mind," Yeonjun sat back, placing his phone out of his lap and onto the side of the table—it indicated that he was listening.
"Well, in February, you remember I had that...downward spiral in mental health, right?" I asked him, causing Yeonjun to nod slightly. "Well, during the time Beomgyu was still unconscious after you guys left...I might've attempted to do the one thing I told Beomgyu to do." His eyes widened, suddenly sitting up. He was as shocked as Taehyun was when he saw me sitting outside of that window, dangling my legs out of it.
"And that wasn't the first time," I cut this part out for you guys because by then, things got more serious. I don't think you'd all like to see that. "The second time I did it was in the same spot when Beomgyu was getting checked. Taehyun had stopped me both times, the second time that I had put up more of a fight. I'm upset at myself for letting that happen—letting myself get that far. However, I felt so... in the wrong for the first time. Maybe it was because I almost caused someone's death by telling them to die or because Beomgyu was my boyfriend and our arguing pattern was so consistent—but I'm just upset thinking about it again."
"You...did what?" He was in disbelief, covering his mouth. "Yihwa, don't you know how serious that is?!"
"I'm completely aware, and I think I'm in a better spot these days..." I trailed off, smiling at him. "It's just that—"
"Yihwa—"
"Hyung?" We heard, causing me to perk up. To our luck, it was just Soobin—but as shocked as I was to see him, he was more surprised to see me. "Y-Yihwa?!"
"Soobin, it's not what it looks like—"
"Why are you both hanging out by yourselves?" Soobin questioned, gasping immediately with horror in his acorn eyes. "Could you both... really be having an affair!?"
"Fuck no!" We synchronized, frowning as well. Soobin immediately cackled, taking a seat next to Yeonjun before rolling his shoulders.
"I knew it, you both are hanging out behind Beomgyu's back to talk about their problems, right?" Soobin smiled mischievously, leaning his head back as Yeonjun and I exchanged glances. "What a pair of friends you both are, getting quite comfortable with each other. If Beomgyu found out, he'd freak and kill at least one of you—probably hyung."
"You say that like we don't know that," Yeonjun eased, sighing in relief that it was no one who'd rat us out. "Besides, I'm only helping with her problems and to ease her stress. We were just talking about something before you came along."
Oh, please don't mention it...
"Oh...?" Soobin inquired, leaning forward. "What were you talking about? Fill me in."
Please, Yeonjun. I beg of you, don't do this.
"We were talking about the trip to Jeju Island," He lied, giving me a quick grin as he faced Soobin again. "You know, the one Beomgyu is planning."
"Oh, yeah!" Soobin exclaimed, soon frowning as he crossed his arms. "That ass is making me drive all of you—well, except Yeonjun who has a car—to the ferry because I have my license now. I'm fine with it, but still...I've already graduated, trying to enjoy myself."
"You graduated already?" I inquired, watching as he nodded. "Woah, so seniors get to leave school earlier?"
"Yeah, it was on... the fourth, if I'm not wrong," Yeonjun agreeing, Soobin nodded as well. "Yeah, we get to graduate because we also have to do university searching. I already got accepted to a university not far from here, so at least I can take care of Kai and Taehyun."
"You aren't going to take care of Beomgyu?" Yeonjun asked instead of me, causing Soobin to laugh slightly.
"You both can handle him, both of his alter egos," Soobin laughed sarcastically, pointing at the both of his. "One that's made for the love of his life and the other that's aggressive all the time."
"You say that like it's a good thing—" Yeonjun paused, beckoning my way. "I'll let her handle both. She could yell him into cowering."
"Hey!" The two both laughed at their stupid yet somewhat funny joke, high-fiving each other as they face me again. "You guys suck. I mean, I'd love to deal with him if we didn't argue every other day."
"You'd deal with him any day—even if he hit you upside the head and called you his side-chick," Yeonjun mumbled, causing me to glare at him. "What, am I wrong? I don't think so."
"Alright, you two, stop bickering and order your food, I'll pay."
"Since when are you the oldest?"
"Since you just pissed off your "favorite girl." Look at you, being all whipped for your best friend's girlfriend," Soobin mocked, causing me to stifle my laughter as Yeonjun's face faded into gloom. "The waitress is coming."
We were a trio of idiots, but I liked our trio more than others. There was the Powerpuff girls, Charlie's angels, the three stooges,
but we were the three fools.
