Twenty One- I

Chase stared out the window of the PROBJet, watching as a canopy of wispy white clouds sailed by below him. His helmet sat in his lap, murmuring softly as its lenses shifted smoothly back and forth in an attempt to make sense of their new environment. As he absentmindedly polished the helmet with the palms of his leather gloves, he remembered that Juliana had fitted them with a small metal insert earlier in their journey.

"A standard-issue Order combat suit... just in case. Although you'll be so far from the action, I'm almost certain you won't even have to think about using it," she'd said, smiling reassuringly as she inspected her handiwork.

Chase could only hope she was right. He knew nothing about how the suit worked, beyond the fact that he could activate it with a forceful flick of his right wrist.

"Well, it looks like we're here," Juliana announced from her seat across from him. She had her foot up on the seat pad in front of her and was purposefully lacing up her boots.

Seeing the other members of Project PROB making final adjustments to their suits and weapons around him, Chase put on his helmet, tightening it so that it fit snugly around his head. Now that Juliana had programmed it to interface with his PW, he was able to zoom his lenses in on the orderly rows of streets and houses below him with little more than a thought. Scanning the area, he quickly spotted his own house, partly by virtue of familiarity but mostly because of the commotion that surrounded it.

"The situation does not look good down there," he reported as Roy pulled the joystick, circling the PROBJet in a gentle downward spiral above its optimal landing spot: the Hewkins' backyard. "The house is surrounded by police and I even think I see news cameras and a couple of people filming on their phones. The probs of us safely landing this thing without getting our identities revealed are... not promising."

"So what if they find out who we are? We're trying to do the right thing, and this isn't even our country. It's not like they could do much in the way of punishing us," Hayley shrugged as she rolled her two blond braids into Princess Leia-style buns on either side of her head.

"...that is definitely not how that works," Roy slammed on the brakes and the PROBJet jolted to a halt midair, still far enough above the ground to escape notice. He turned around in the wide leather pilot's chair, smiling sarcastically at Hayley. "How would you like to explain to the Americans why the crown princess of a small European nation and her three friends came to their country dressed like comic book characters in a vehicle that isn't supposed to exist?"

"Okay, new plan," Juliana waved her arms in their air to get the others' attention before the verbal altercation could continue. "Chase and the Jet stay up here. The three of us use our suits' gliding systems to land on the roof and quickly enter the house through the back door before the police can stop us. Chase, when we've got Meg, we'll tell you, and you've gotta lower the Jet for just long enough for us to get in. Everyone got it?"

"We'll still be seen," Roy observed dryly.

"Yes, but we'll be in our masks," Juliana said as she placed hers over her face. "As long as we do this quickly and efficiently, they'll never know who we are."

"Right," Hayley nodded, enthusiastically extending her hand in front of her. She looked very puzzled when nobody joined her. "Come on, guys! We can't just go without some proper team spirit."

Chase, wanting to be encouraging, put his hand on top of hers and was quickly followed by Juliana and finally an unenthusiastic Roy. "On the count of 3, we say 'PROB rocks'," Hayley instructed. "Ready, 1, 2, 3,"

"PROB rocks!" Roy barely moved his lips, while Juliana felt so silly after saying it that she nearly fell over giggling.

"You're an adorable little dork," she patted the top of Hayley's head affectionately before her expression grew serious. "It's go time."

Juliana raised her arms, watching as veins of black webbing unfolded between them. She raised the lever on the floor of the PROBJet, bracing herself for the burst of wind that accompanied the opening of the hatch before she jumped out without looking down. Roy steeled himself, the sun glinting majestically off his black armor as he stepped unceremoniously into the gaping hole in the Jet's floor.

"Good luck!" Hayley gave Chase a thumbs up before letting out an excited shout as she did a front flip through the trapdoor into the open sky below. Chase watched the other Heirs glide away, maneuvering their way toward his house, until they became specks in the sky and finally disappeared. Sighing, he pulled the trapdoor closed before sitting back down in his seat. He adjusted the lenses in his helmet to simultaneously show the other three Heirs' suit cams, and even though they were all still free-falling through the sky, he couldn't help but scour the feeds for any sign of Meg.

He squeezed his eyes shut for a moment, his senses overwhelmed by input from all three fields of view. Please let her be alright.
