Sims 1 Retrospective

OK here it goes! My first review in this book! Hopefully this one will be better than the last one page paragraph that I did before when I was much younger. Rambling and nostalgia aside let's review this... Game!

Opening

We open with a loading screen (That I couldn't even get a picture of because of how fast the loading screen is with this game) Then go straight into a generic neighborhood (As seen above) and you may notice something that you may be unfamiliar with if you are used to the Sims 2 or Sims 3... Or even Sims 4, there is no option for making a custom neighborhood in the original game! It may seem as a buzzkill at first but you're most likely not even going to see this screen in normal game play unless traveling which well get to later.

Step One: Making a Sim

First let's start out with the most important aspect of the Sims franchise.... The Sims! In this game you will have to click the first icon on the top part of the screen to get to the household manager. In the Sims 1 you could only have 8 Household's in the queue at a time... In the manager you could delete a household, add them to the neighborhood, or make a new one. Let's make a new family just for this review! Once you click create a new family it brings you to a basic screen detailing options to delete, edit or add another sim, also inquiring you to make a household name.

As you can see there is a very minute amount of customization compared to the modern sims games... Even its predecessor, The Sims 2 has a unearthly amount of customization compared to this game, though that can be expected for the first game in the franchise... Anyway on the top you can enter the Sim's name and below that on the left side you can enter the personality of that sim.... Like in the Sims 2 you can see that by clicking the type of astrological sign at the bottom you can change the levels of Neatness, Niceness, Playfulness, etc. Then on the other side we have whether or not your Sim is a Child or Adult. Their skin tone, and their gender... Then on the very right there is finally the look of the sim. In this game their is only 2 options: To change their head and hair and to change their whole outfit. Please note that you can only have one outfit... And finally there is the Bio of your sim.... Surprisingly it takes up a large portion of the screen, for not being a large aspect of customization... That aside then we have the cancel and done for that character. Once you have your household you can finally start the game!

Step Two: Game play

Yes! We are finally in the main game play! The first thing you will notice is the graphics... Compared to the Sims 3 or Sims 2 or Sims 4 the graphics aren't that impressive. Though you will have to expect that from a early 2000's game other than the isometric graphics you next see the HUD displaying the 3 main modes: Sims Mode, Build Mode and Buy Mode and farther down is the Camera mode:

And finally the settings mode... Most things in the mode are the standard stuff so I wont be covering them... Getting into the next level of the HUD is the current level of the lot you are viewing, in the sims 1 you could only have 2 floors, even at that people still seem to have created great looking houses:

Made by: Squid Dork (Check out her other great house builds also :D)

Anyway continuing on there is the views of whether or not you can see the walls of the house and next to that are the camera controls... (Which is pretty limited due to isometric review) Then there is the in-game time and the amount of friends that the household has and the amount of   Simoleans you have and next up is the ? Which displays help messages...

Finally getting into the actual game play as you can see there UI hasn't changed much in the first few games (Sims 4 is a totally different beast to tackle) just like other games in the series you have to feed the sims, make sure they get their sleep, make sure there comfortable, and make sure they have enough fun... Make sure they have had a shower or brushed their teeth at least in the last few days make sure they have talked to a person, make sure they have had enough restroom time and finally the now defunct room.... OK I'm pretty sure no body wanted this because you have to actually make their rooms look nice with potted plants...Or carpets.... Or some promiscuous statue (You know which one I'm talking about) setting that aside then you get to the other menu options. You can see their relationships and then their personality, their job and their inventory... And the very last option is probably the most interesting one of them all, you can actually see how big their house is on a scale of 10 and other parts of their home such as number of bedrooms and etc.

Moving on from basic options as you can see the game can be a little... Unforgiving? Well from as you can see above added in the livin' large expansion pack you can have animals visit your house... Speaking of that you can do other great things with more expansion packs... All 8 of them, though I have the complete collection I could not imagine living without even the most basic of stuff in these expansion packs. Things were added were huge to the game such as being able to have pets, becoming a move star, having strange town? Going on a vacation, having house parties? Going on dates and even more!

(Sorry for the quality of the picture...) (I don't own the photo)

In all the game is great for the start of a franchise,  though if I were stuck with playing only one game in the entire sims franchise I would go for Sims 2 at least. There isn't a community for this game as much anymore sadly... But if you felt nostalgic or wanted to try the game then go for it! Its still a great game with tons of mods out for it!

P.S. Thanks for reading this review... I know it was long and its the first in the book and if you could please write anything you might wanted to be reviewed! :D
