3.0 The One Where She Is Concerned About Him

At the beginning of the school year, Sabina Rios was sat next to the other new girl in town, Jessica Davis, in biology because the teacher believed Sabina was the nicest student in the class and would be the best influence on Jessica. The two became friends fast.
Sabina would see Jessica hanging out with Hannah Baker and Alex Standall after school almost every day at Monet's coffee shop and would always wave to them. One day, she was there with Bryce Walker, picking up some coffee and waved to the group. Bryce furrowed his eyebrows, looking down at his girlfriend. "You know them, Sab?"
"I met Hannah a little while ago, and Jess and I are lab partners."
Bryce nodded, looking back over at the table. The three new kids sat at the table drinking their select drinks. "I feel so fucking bad for that girl." Jessica sighed, turning back to her friends.
"Why? She's dating the most popular kid in school and is on track to be Valedictorian. Sounds like she's pretty well off to me." Alex responded, crossing the drink he had chosen off of his list. He wanted to try every drink Monet's offered, and was almost halfway through.
Jessica shook her head, looking down at her hands. "She's not happy."
"What do you mean?" Hannah questioned her friend.
"I was in a bad relationship, and I can tell these kinds of things." Jessica spoke after letting out a sigh. "I can tell that she doesn't really want to be with him."

Jessica walked up to the Rios household, and she saw Justin Foley hopping out of Sabina's window. She frowned, but then her eyes widened in realization. She ran up to the door and aggressively knocked on it. The door opened to show Edward Rios. "Ah, Jessica. Sabina's just in her room. Go on up." Jessica nodded and slipped past Sabina's father without saying anything.
She rushed up the stairs and bursted into Sabina's room. "Why was Justin sneaking out of your window?"
Sabina, who was sitting on her bed, looked up at Jessica and shook her head. "You saw that?"
"Yes." Jessica nodded, moving to her best friend. "Are you cheating on Bryce? I mean, if you are, good for you. He sucks. But, that's kind of not great, also."
The girl quickly shook her head. "No, he was just over here studying. I wouldn't do that to Bryce."
Again... she wouldn't do it to Bryce again.
"I always thought he had a thing for you, but what do I know?" Jessica laughed, moving to the bed.
Sabina rolled her eyes. "We're just friends."
"Sure. That's what it looked like at Bryce's party last year."
Sabina's eyes widened. "What did you see?"
Jessica furrowed her eyebrows. Why did she react like that. "Just a lot of flirting." She sat back on her hands. "What did you think I saw, Sab?"
The girl brought her hands to her face, cupping her cheeks. Should she tell her? Sabina had always trusted Jessica, and Jessica had never proven her wrong.
"We did hook up at that party."
Jessica let out a cackle in disbelief. "No fucking way. You actually cheated on him."
"Yeah, and I feel like shit about it." Sabina collapsed her head onto the bed, rolling into Jessica. "That wasn't even the first time. We fucked at your end of summer party too, Jess." Jessica was eating this up.
She had known Justin had a thing for Sabina, but she would have never thought that Sabina would stray from her perfect relationship. Especially to go to the boy with the worst reputation in all of Crestmont.
"Shit." Jessica took in a deep breath before chuckling. "I knew he was in love with you. Ever since that fucking dance last year."
Sabina sat back up, her friend patting her back. "I know, it's not good."
"Dump your shitty boyfriend. I never thought I would say this, but Justin would treat you a hell of a lot better."
"I can't dump him, Jess."
*
"She's crazy."
"Hannah's not crazy, Jess."
Jessica sat on Sabina's bed the day after Hannah found out that her and Alex had started dating and were hanging out without her. "You weren't there. She went crazy."
"You're overreacting. I'm sure she was just a little hurt." Sabina shrugged, looking down at her phone. Bryce had said he was going to text her that night, but it was now ten o'clock and nothing.
"She was overreacting." Jessica shook her head as she let out a groan. "Alex and I like each other. It's not my fault that Justin ruined Hannah."
Sabina's eyes snapped back up at Jessica. "He didn't ruin her. Guys like her."
"They want to have sex with her." Jessica nodded. "But they all think that she's easy, and that's why they want her." Sabina cocked an eyebrow, not liking the way her friend was acting.
"That's bullshit."
Jessica cocked her head to the side. "I'm kind of surprised you didn't know that. Isn't your boyfriend like the head of the entire sports program?"
"I guess." Sabina shrugged. "He doesn't really tell me much about what is going on, though." She let out a sigh, turning off her phone. "And I'm sure he wouldn't say any of that shit." Part of her believed what she said, but a much larger part didn't.
"Yeah, I don't believe that for a fucking second. The man loves drama and attention so much." Sabina giggled at her friends words. She was right. Bryce loved both drama and attention.

Sabina smiled as she sat on the bleachers in Liberty High School's gym, watching the cheerleaders perform during the pep rally. When they finished, Sabina applauded, making eye contact with Jessica. She sent a girl a smile before screaming, "Yeah, Jess!" Jessica had not done very well in the cheer, but Sabina was proud of her anyways. She could have never gone out there and done that. She watched the cheerleaders walk to the sideline of the court as Principal Bolan stepped up to the microphone.
"Hey there, Liberty Tigers! It's an exciting day at Liberty High!" Bolan spoke to all of the students sitting around him. "Our varsity basketball team is kicking off its pre-season today, the first step on the road to returning to the state finals!" The students cheered. "By Liberty tradition, I'm happy to welcome to the podium the winner of this year's Captain's Award to introduce the varsity squad."
A boy in the audience yelled out, "Walker!" And other students chuckled.
Sabina looked up at her boyfriend, who placed his hand on her thigh. She slightly frowned, moving uncomfortably in her seat. "You won?"
"Yeah, I found out yesterday." Bryce chuckled. "Did I not tell you?" His girlfriend just shook her head in response.
"Now, this season's winner is co-captain of the football team and the baseball team," Bolan continued with his speech, "and was called 'an inspiration to his entire team, friend to all, a tough mother-bleep'," students began to laugh again, "'and a true born leader', and I am delighted to bestow the Liberty High Captain's Award on Bryce Walker."
The audience began to cheer one again, as Bryce stood up from his seat and walked towards Principal Bolan, high-fiving the tiger mascot as he passed them. He took the framed certificate from the principal and held it over his head as the students continued to cheer for him. Sabina noticed him sending winks towards girls, and she frowned. "Thank you, thank you, thank you." Bryce spoke, approaching the microphone. "Ah, it's- it's an an honor." He shoved his hands into the pockets of his varsity jacket, smiling. "I'm proud to be a Liberty student athlete. Go Tigers!" The teenagers, one again, erupted in applause. Sabina just slowly clapped before trying to fake a smile. Bryce took a sheet of paper from his pocket and unfolding it before he continued speaking. "Now, this year's starting lineup..." He began to drum his hands on the podium, causing the students to do the same on their laps. "Willem Barclay!" Bryce called out. A cheerleader came tumbling down the court, followed by Willem. "Zach Dempsey!" Sherri Holland began her tumbling as Zach came running out. Sabina watched as Jessica readied herself to begin her tumbling for Justin. "Justin Foley!" Bryce yelled. Sabine's smile became real as she expected Justin to come running out. She couldn't wait to see how happy he looked when he saw everyone sitting in the bleachers cheering for him.
Jessica began her tumble, but Justin never entered the court. Sabina's eyebrows furrowed as the cheering in the gym faded. The girl looked around, wondering where the hell Justin could be. Sabina watched as Jessica awkwardly stood next to the other cheerleaders. "Anders Anderson!" Bryce resumed his role call.
Sabina frowned, looking down at her phone. She stood up from the bleachers, exiting the gym. She hadn't seen the boy all day even though the two had spent a while studying for that stupid calculus test. This didn't make any sense. Where the hell was Justin?
Walking through the hallways of Liberty High School, she dialed Justin's phone number. She got his voicemail. "Hey, Justin. It's me." She spoke after hearing his answering box. "Where the hell are you? Why haven't you been at school?" She looked down at her feet. "You just made Jessica look like a fucking idiot because you didn't show up for the pep rally." The girl let out a sigh, leaning her head against the lockers. "And I guess all the hard work we did last night didn't fucking matter because you didn't show up to calc." She groaned, tapping her fingers against the locker. "Just please call me and let me know that you're okay."
She ran a hand through her hair as she shoved her phone into the back pocket of her jeans. "Sabina?"
The girl glanced over to see Clay Jensen standing next to her. "What, Clay?"
"Why would Justin be going over to your house?"
Sabina shook her head in confusion. Why was he listening to her phone call. "I helped him study for the calc test."
"He didn't even show up for the test." Clay let out a scoff.
"Can you just leave it alone, Clay? Please?"
Clay shook his head. "We need to tell someone about the tapes."
Sabina furrowed her eyebrows. "Tapes? What the hell are you talking about?"
"Hannah's tapes." Sabina shook her head in response. "Don't act dumb, Sabina."
The girl let out a chuckle, rolling her eyes. "I really have no idea what you are talking about." She frowned as she watched students begin to pile out of the gym. "It's been great, Clay, as usual."

Sabina sat up in her bedroom, writing a research paper for her English class when she heard a knock at her window. She looked up and saw Justin. The girl stood up, and opened the window. Justin slipped into her room. "What the fuck, Justin. Where have you been? I've been calling you all fucking day."
"I was at Bryce's. I just needed some time to chill today."
"Bryce's?" Justin nodded as he sat down on Sabina's bed. "Why did you go to Bryce's of all people."
"He's my best friend."
Sabina let out a scoff as she began pacing. "Well, you really are a great best friend. You fucked your best friend's girlfriend."
She regretted saying that the second it came out. She knew he felt like shit for betraying his best friend. They both felt like shit.
The girl stopped walking and turned to face him. "When you disappear, you worry me." She moved to sit next to him. "And, I thought today was really important to you with you wanting to study for the test and then the fucking pep rally, so when I saw that you skipped both, I just got nervous." Justin nodded, brushing a piece of hair behind her ear. "I know that things are weird between us, but I care about you, Justin."
"I know you do, sweetheart." The boy nodded, his eyes slowly falling to her lips. Fuck, he wanted to kiss her so damn bad."I'm sorry I worried you. I'm going to try to get myself back together."
Sabina noticed his gaze on her lips and let out a deep breath before quickly changing the subject. "Also, I kind of had this really weird conversation with Clay Jensen earlier."
Justin's smile faded, and his face grew stern. "What did the kid say to you?"
"He was listening in on my voicemail to you which was really fucking strange." She shrugged, rolling her eyes. "And then he asked me something about some tapes. I think he said they were Hannah's." Justin frowned. Of course the tapes were going to get back to Sabina eventually.
"Tapes?" Justin cocked an eyebrow, playing dumb. He hated lying to her, but he couldn't risk her finding out about everything.
