Chapter Thirty-Nine: Social Experiment
The artificial sunlight streamed in through the curtains, causing Sean to stir. Groaning softly, he turned his face away from the sun and found himself inhaling the deep musk of Mark's avatar. Opening his eyes, he smiled as he stared at Mark's sleeping face. His hair was slightly damp from sweat, and his scruffy beard needed a trim, but his heart swelled looking at him. Shifting to face him, Sean slid his leg up Mark's that kept his other leg pinned to the mattress. Mark moaned in his sleep, pulling him against him. Snuggling up to him, Sean sighed blissfully. He never wanted to get up. He was warm and happy just like this. Even the loud laughing voices coming from downstairs couldn't tempt him to get up. Mark's hand slowly began moving along his back, sending shivers up his spine. Lightly biting Mark's bare shoulder, Sean teased out a tiny moan. Something that got Mark's full attention. His hard cock pressed firmly against Sean's hip, before Mark groggily purred out. "Don't tease. I'm tired."
Chuckling, Sean whispered to him passionately. "Shame. I'm wide awake." Laying onto his back, Mark's hands guided Sean's hips to sit over his thighs. Giggles rippled from Sean, causing his wings to flutter and stretch out behind him. For a moment all Mark did was stare up at him. His hand eventually reached out to stroke one of his shimmering thin wings. The sensation stole Sean's breath, and he arched his back. Sitting up, Mark wrapped his arms around Sean's waist and placed kisses along his collarbone. He could feel the tips of his vampiric fangs but didn't react to them. Grabbing Mark's hair, he tilted his head back to kiss him with a deep sensual moan. Sliding his hands down to grip Mark's shoulders, he lightly grinded his hips against Mark's, trying to coax him into playing with him as they kissed. Mark's grin set Sean's heart aflame. Grabbing his sides, Mark flipped him onto his back, shifting over him with a wicked smile. Just before their lips met in another kiss though, a gentle knock stopped them.
Dropping over Sean with a heavy sigh, Mark pulled the blanket up over them barely before the door opened. Tentatively, Lulu slipped inside and chuckled out. "Still in bed? It's almost noon, guys. We were getting worried about you." Peaking out from the blanket, Sean cleared his throat and told her honestly. "We had a long night. We'll be down in a bit." Lulu peaked around the room, asking curiously. "Is Mark in the bathroom?" Sean opened his mouth to answer, but the words died in his throat as Mark began to suckle on one of his nipples. Nodding to her, he pointed to the bathroom. Giving a little shrug, Lulu began to close the door while telling them. "Hurry up. Lunch is getting cold." The second the door clicked shut, Sean muttered under the blanket. "That was a dirty trick, Mark." Retreating farther down into the darkness of the blanket, Mark chuckled out playfully. "Ya? Wait until you see what I do next." Sean shook his head, then stifled a moan into his pillow as Mark's lips encased his cock.
Sean couldn't remember having sex as long as they did. By the time he staggered out of bed, he was drained and exhausted. He wanted to shower but was sure the others were about ready to throttle them. Unable to get his hair to lay down flat, he fluffed it up more and dressed himself. He needed coffee and something to eat before he passed out. Behind him, Mark finished dressing and kissed his shoulder. Leaning back into him, he asked weakly. "What are our plans today?" Shrugging, Mark told him honestly. "Relax. Maybe do some gardening. We're taking a break." Leaning against the doorframe, Sean anxiously mumbled out. "Can we afford to do that? This game isn't going to beat itself..." Pulling Sean out of the bedroom, Mark whispered to him lovingly. "Burning ourselves out will only make us sloppy. Besides..." Pausing to kiss Sean's forehead, Mark then added seriously. "I wanna figure out who this skeleton guy is that wants you so bad. It's better that we lay low for a bit." Sean nodded, even if his stomach didn't agree with it.
He was so torn between wanting out of the game and staying in it. Here, he had Mark all to himself. He wanted to keep it that way. Following Mark down the stairs, Sean ventured into the kitchen where Wade had left a note for them. Picking it up, Sean called out to Mark in the living room. "They went swimming in the lake. Should we join them?" Mark didn't answer. Setting the note down, Sean eased into the living room where Mark was watching the mirror on the wall intently. Turning his eyes to the news that was playing, Sean swallowed. The news was talking about the recent attacks between gamers and non-gamers. A few groups of gamers were getting worse. Killing anyone below their level to acquire money and free loot. While non-gamers were either running scared and refusing to play the game anymore. Or worse, were banning together to ambush gamers by luring them to monster spawns to help them overwhelm the gamer.
Feeling sick to his stomach, Sean tried to snatch the remote from Mark as he snapped out. "Turn this shite off. I don't wanna see it." Mark moved the remote out of Sean's reach, pointing to the screen. Reluctantly, Sean looked as the side of the mirror began listing players known to be dead. However, the pixie reporter suddenly came on screen and nervously told everyone. "Due to the latest kill count. We have someone here that would like to say a few words. Mr...?" Sean's jaw dropped as the skeleton man stepped into the frame with collect ease. His icy blue eyes blaring from under his worn dark red robe. Staring down the camera, he answered in a sinister yet docile tone of voice. "You can call me Glade. I'm the leader and founder of The Specters of Death." Sean inched closer to Mark. He needed to feel his warmth. On screen, Glade continued coolly. "A few days ago, a hacker was detected. Killed many within the safe zone of a small inconsequential town. That was me."
Mark draped a hand over Sean's shoulders, hugging him to his side. Glade gestured around the graveyard that he was standing in and droned on. "This world you're in was MY creation. MY escape. I know every cheat code. Every backdoor and short cut. And like you... I'm imprisoned here by the game master. My father." Moving to a gravestone to lean on, Glade took a breath before adding darkly. "That may come as a shock to some of you. But I just wanted to clarify that this is a fight between my father and I... you people are just in it. You want out of here? Help me reach the end." Giving a little shrug, Glade huffed out dryly. "Or don't. I can hunt down the things I need on my own. But just know that the more you fight amongst each other... the more you prove my point to dear old dad." Sean clung to Mark's arm as Glade removed a red bladed dagger from his robe and told everyone. "This is a level eighty blood dagger. For anyone less then level eighty... it is a slow painful death. Unless you have the antidote or are a Draugr like me."
Handing the blade off to a teenage player, Glade told the boy casually. "Kill your girlfriend and I'll raise your level." Sean gasped as the camera turned to a teenage girl that was being held by two other Draugr players. The boy turned to look at the girl as she squirmed and pleaded to be set free. Glade put a hand on the boy's shoulder, telling him with a shrug. "She was fucking your best friend. Doesn't that make you angry? Don't you want her pretty avatar to... pay?" The boy gripped the dagger tighter, rushing toward the girl. The camera jerked away to show Glade's grinning face as the girl screamed. The moment the screams fell silent, Glade looked into the camera and stated lifelessly. "Are you watching dad? I played games because killing people that piss me off in real life was... wrong. Life isn't any better in a video game. People will be people. They kill. They enjoy it. Your biggest mistake... was trapping me in it. Your little social experiment is going to fail, because people will always divide themselves."
Removing a small box from his robe, Glade coolly told the audience. "There are doors that I designed that go to each realm's last boss. Beat them all and you win the game. But in order to open the last door to the last boss... you need pieces of different races. Something I enjoy. I've collected enough to start unlocking these doors... but I require one piece still. And I want the one that got away from me. Bring him to me. ALIVE. And I'll make sure you win the game by soloing the boss. Bring me. JackSepticEye. The Light Elf. One last sacrificial lamb is all it takes. Tempus fugit, memento mori." Turning away from the screen, Sean shuddered out. "He's insane..." Tensing, Mark uttered out seriously. "He's lying. He wants to short cut up to the boss for a different reason." Raising an eyebrow, Sean asked him curiously. "How do you know that?" Mark turned off the mirror, tossing the remote aside as he stated flatly. "Think about it. The guy LOVES killing people. He founded a guild based on it. There is no way that he wants this game to end. He can hack and cheat... but he's choosing to hunt down the things required to open the doors."
Dropping down onto the couch, Sean hugged himself. While Mark continued angrily. "It's a trap. Whoever gives him what he wants is a dead player. What I don't understand is... why you? You can't be the only light elf in this game!" Inhaling slowly, Sean waited for Mark to go silent before telling him in a shaky voice. "Mark... he wants me because he knows who I am, and I got away from him. He's playing the game... he's hunting me." Moving up to him, Mark kneeled and cupped his face as he told him seriously. "They aren't getting you. I don't care what it takes." Sean nodded, but images of Mark getting ambushed and overwhelmed were digging into him. Kissing his forehead, Mark hugged him close and whispered to him with a sudden thrill to his voice. "We could find him first..." Leaning back, Sean blurted out in shock. "Say what?" Backing up, Mark told him coolly. "We go to him. And I kill him." Raising to his feet, Sean breathlessly retorted. "Mark, no. He won't be alone. And you said it yourself. It's a trap."
Mark nodded to him but smirked back. "Ya. But if he wants you bad enough. We could use that against him." Shaking his head, Sean logically told Mark. "Listen to me. It's a trap to get ME. He doesn't want the game to end. He's in no rush. And once he has me... who knows what he wants." Mark curled his lip back to flash his fangs when he told him smugly. "I'm technically apart of the Draugr class now. Maybe we can find out." Sean shook his head, storming off into the kitchen. Following close behind, Mark calmed his mood down enough to say caringly. "It's just a suggestion. I won't do it if you don't want to. But-" Mark stopped talking and Sean stopped by the counter as a message from Bob popped up for them. Pressing the button to open it, the screen showed the text in dwarven but read aloud in English. "Sean. Mark. Saw broadcast. Scatter. There are players coming. We've been spotted! Taking Lulu with us."
Closing the message, Sean turned to face Mark with a scared look. Straightening up, Mark told him quickly. "Grab your stuff. We need to leave now." Nodding, Sean rushed up the stairs to check for anything that he might have taken out of his inventory. It didn't take long before they had everything and were dressed in armor. Slipping outside, they heard a crowd of people coming up the road as Bob and Wade yelled out to them. "They aren't here! We bought the house on our own!" From the crowd someone yelled out. "Liar! They go where you go! You're friends!" Sean started to move toward the road to help Bob and Wade, but Mark yanked him toward the woods, telling him gruffly. "They'll be alright. We've got to move or we're all dead." To Be Continued...
