Chapter 39

Days seemed to fly by now that everything was right in the world. There was no conflict between any of the boys, school wasn't all that difficult, and Evanee was happy.

Dates with Evan happened at least three times a week. Their group spent most of their extra time together and they still attended a few Laser Tag tournaments.

But not all good things tend to last. The end of the school year was less than two weeks away and Evanee was itching to get her diploma. To get the one thing that would hopefully bring her one step closer to having that perfect apartment in the perfect city with the perfect guy. At least she had already had the latter.

"Evanee," Aunt Gemma called out from downstairs. "Breakfast is ready."

For this Saturday, Evanee would be spending it entirely with her aunt. Drew was at work and Evanee had already told her friends that she'd be busy today.

The two sat down at opposite end of the dining table. Gemma had already set everything up and happily served waffles, scrambled eggs, and bacon.

"Before we eat, there's a few letters for you," Gemma said, handing the green eyed girl three unopened envelopes.

The first envelope held the graduation tickets that Gemma and Drew would need if they wanted to see Evanee get her diploma, which they were both pretty excited for. The second one was an acceptance letter into a local community college, which was her current backup plan if she didn't get any other letters from the nearby universities.

Her eyes carefully read over the packet, which was bigger than the other two and had a stamp on the back.

Harvard University
Evangeline Pierce

She didn't remember applying for Harvard. In fact, Evanee didn't apply for any college outside of California so when she looked up at her smiling aunt, she knew that there was something behind this.

Gemma urged her to open it.

Inside was another letter, a brochure, and a packet. The first few sentences of the letter were formalities, thanking her for applying to Harvard. That was thanks to Gemma. Then her heart began to race as she read through the rest.

She had been accepted into one of the best colleges in the country with a full scholarship.

"Gemma! Thank you. Oh my god, thank you!" Evanee couldn't help but shout, getting up from her chair and hugging her aunt.

"You got in," Gemma beamed. "All I did was fill out some papers for you and I submitted the three page personal statement you wrote for your other applications. This was all you, Ducky, and I am so proud of you."

The a frown crossed her face as she continued reading. They wanted her to leave two days after graduation.

Gemma seemed to know, but she was as supportive as she always was. Even so, Evanee didn't let the fact get her down. Her aunt was proud of and she was proud of herself.

It was one of those moments where Evanee didn't care if she looked like a mess. She was sobbing into her aunt's shirt and the world had miraculously become even more perfect.

------------------

Before the seniors knew, graduation day was upon them. They had spent the last week tying up loose ends of their high school experience and practicing the graduation ceremony. Everyone was ready.

The five friends waited outside the auditorium. It would take another thirty minutes for the ceremony to commence, which left them thirty minutes as high school students. In less than an hour, they'd be high school graduates.

"We made it!" Jonathan cheered, grabbing everybody into a group hug.

All the boys were wearing suits under their robes, while Evanee was wearing her mother's old dress. It was a simple white dress that flared out at the hip and to top it off, Gemma had put her hair up into an intricate bun and Evan's necklace was placed around her neck.

"You guys look amazing and I might cry right now," Evanee admitted. "I'm so proud of all of you and even though we might not see each other as much, I want to let you guys know that you guys will always be my friends and I wouldn't change that for the world."

Seeing Tyler cry was a rare sight, but he stood next to his friends with tears in his eyes and a large smile on his face. "You fucking shitter," he said before hugging Evanee.

After Tyler and Evanee's cry fest, which no one else wanted to join, they shared previous high school experiences and laughed together.

"Okay. Valedictorians are up first so I'll see you guys in two hours," Evanee sighed, realizing that she had to give a short speech, wait until most of the students received their diplomas, get hers, and then she could finally say that she survived high school.

Luckily, Evanee got through her speech without stuttering or babbling or crying like an idiot. At the end of her speech, her friends, Gemma, Drew, and even Laila were cheering for her which she was thankful for.

She was the last valedictorian to speak. Seniors with last names beginning with an A stood up and got into position to receive their diplomas and get a handshake from the Mayor, the principal, and the vice principal. It went on for quite some time and Evanee despised the fact that the school had to of each student down to check for phones.

Then her name has been called and she walked up the stage as everyone else had done. She took her diploma from the principal and shook hands with everyone as she walked across the stage, quickly stopping so that Gemma had a chance to take her picture.

The smile never left her face even after she sat back down in her seat. She finally graduated.

--------------------

Before any of them left, the five friends had said goodbye to each other for the time being so that they could spend time with their families on the special day. Evanee also had a chance to say bye to Laila who was leaving later that afternoon, which undoubtedly meant that Evan was throwing a graduation party.

Around six in the evening, Evan had informed her of the party he was going to throw.

Evanee doubted that he would be throwing a party if he knew that she would be leaving soon. She hadn't told him. She had two weeks and in those two weeks she urged herself to tell him that she'd be leaving. She was never able to, but she did tell Jonathan and David.

They were the most understanding and she was touched that they had accepted it and wished her the best of luck in college.

The world was in her favor. Even more so now that Gemma had gone with Drew to some place. Probably a hotel since they didn't want a repeat of Evanee walking in on them again.

The raven haired girl was all dressed up for the party. Her long, black hair was up into a high ponytail and her makeup was on fleek. She wore regular ripped jeans and a plain black crop top that exposed her flat stomach.

Thank God for high metabolism.

It was only six and the party started at seven, but the pre party was still a go. Evanee was the first one to Evan's house since she lived right across the street and the others arrived soon after.

Like they had done the party prior, they enjoyed lounging around in the living room and just talking. They wouldn't have much opportunities like this in the future. College was starting right after summer for the majority of them.

"So where's everyone planning to go?" Evan asked.

David and Jonathan's eyes instinctively flashed to Evanee with looks of concern. They knew she hadn't told Evan, mostly because Evan would likely lash out like he tended to do sometimes.

"I'm planning to go to the closest community college for a year or two until I can save up most of the money I need for an actually university," Tyler replied, taking a sip of his beer.

The only people who weren't drinking anything alcoholic were David and Evanee.

"Well, how about you Jonathan?"

The blue eyed boy seemed to stiffen up in his seat. His laid back posture disappearing all together. "I-I'm not going to college. I don't have the grades for it and I have to stay home to take care of my mom."

Jonathan's mom, like his sister, had cancer, though not as severe. She was currently going through chemotherapy and would continue to throughout the summer.

Tyler, who was sitting next to Jonathan, and put his arm around him. "You don't have to have the best grades to go to college and I know for a fact that your dad is able to take care of your mom. Apply for colleges."

"Yeah, we all want the best for you," Evanee added.

It was evident that Evan was about to ask his girlfriend on her future college career, so David spoke up,"I applied for USC. They haven't sent letters out yet so I'm still waiting for an answer."

"Have you applied to any other colleges?" Evan asked. He knew that having a backup choice was important.

"Yeah, I'll probably do the same thing as Tyler."

Tyler, who had left for a quick second to get a snack, came back and sat down. "What about you, Evanee? You haven't really said anything."

Just like Jonathan had done, Evanee stiffened up and her chest tightened. Still, she tried to play it off cool. "I'm still deciding."

"Well," Tyler said, unconvinced,"how about you, Evan?"

"I got a partial scholarship UCLA, but I'm willing to go anywhere to stay with you," Evan had said to his girlfriend sitting by his side.

In that moment, Evanee felt horrible. She felt like crying and shouting or both. He was willing to give up his scholarship to go to the same school as her, but she was leaving to Massachusetts in less than two days.

Then they heard commotion outside. People have started to arrive.

The friends moved to the kitchen, except for Evan and Evanee. People were knocking at the door, but she needed to tell him. Any later and she would've been crying with guilt.

"Evan," she began. Her voice was shaky which immediately concerned him.

"Hey, what's wrong? I can tell them the party is cancelled if you want," Evan said hurriedly.

She shook her head. Her chest hurt even more. "I got into Harvard."

Silence was never a good response. Evanee held her head low the entire time, but the quiet had caused her to look up at Evan who looked as if he was going to cry.

"When?"

"I leave in two days."

That's when he lost it. "Two days. Two fucking days before you leave. What happened to you'll always stay with me and that college wouldn't change this? What happened to being open with each other? I trusted you Evanee and you just go off and leave me like everyone fucking does."

Evan rushed to open the doors and the people who were waiting outside came piling in, making Evanee lose sight of her boyfriend between the groups of teenagers.

She couldn't help but cry. She deserved this. She had time to tell him and was too scared to say it. Now Evan would hate her forever.

"Evanee," she felt a hand on her shoulder. "You told him didn't you?"

She nodded. David brought her to the backyard where Tyler and Jonathan were. Thankfully no one else was there.

Jonathan saw her and gave her a short hug. "We just told Tyler," he said, glancing at his other friend.

"Thanks for telling us two fucking days before Evanee. You're a great friend," he muttered sarcastically, earning a slap on the back of his head by David.

"We all love you no matter what, okay? Even Tyler here," Jonathan lightly kicked Tyler on his side.

"What the shit dude?"

Ignoring Tyler, Jonathan continued,"we support you and we all hope you'll enjoy it there. Now, go and find Evan and try to explain all of this."

Evanee wiped her eyes and nodded, hugging each of them, which Tyler accepted begrudgingly. She then walked back inside, looking for Evan. He wasn't downstairs so she went upstairs and checked his room.

Her words caught in her throat as she saw Evan's bare backside, pressed against another unclothed person against the wall. Evan didn't even bother to turn around, expecting the person who had opened the door to be just another party-goer. Though his "partner" had seen who it was and stared back at her wide eyed.

"What?" Evan asked Sydney as he let her down and glanced behind him.

He saw her for a single second before she slammed the door shut and ran. She ran outside and just kept running, disregarding her house. She didn't want to be anywhere near anyone.

Then she had finally stopped at the park. She sat on one of the benches unseen from the street lamp light. Tears wouldn't stop falling from her eyes and she wished she never saw what she had just experienced.

Evan had sex with another girl and of course that girl had to be Sydney.

She lied and he cheated.

Maybe this was karma getting back at her. It was her, in fact, who had kept a secret and lied to Evan.

It didn't matter now. It was over.

Evanee shivered in the dark, regretting her impulsive decision to run, but she didn't have the courage to go back. Not yet.

She soon heard footsteps coming towards the park and in fear, hid behind the playground.

"Evanee!"

Still unseen, she poked her head to the side and saw David, Jonathan, and Tyler.

"What are you doing here?" She said, walking into the artificial light of the street lamp above.

"What do you think? We saw Evan. We're sorry," Tyler said, sighing.

"Don't apologize. That's karma isn't it?"

Jonathan shook his head. "That's not karma. That's Evan being stupid. C'mon, let's get you home."

"I don't want to go back yet."

"Too bad," David said. "You'll freeze out here."

So the four of them walked back in the dark. Without even bothering to look at Evan's house, they went inside Evanee's and stayed in the living room.

Graduation night was nothing like Evanee had expected.
