Chapter 32

"You studied every single day over winter break and you're still worrying about finals?" David asked.

It had been a week since school had started again and finals were thankfully over. Though, the stress still lingered in some.

"You did fine, Ducky. Finals are finally over, today is Friday, and it's going to be New Years pretty soon. We should go out and celebrate," Evan suggested. "Plus, I finally have everyone's late Christmas presents and I rented the local skating rink out for three hours."

They had agreed that they'd exchange their Christmas presents once everyone had bought theirs since most of them were late. Evanee had already given a present, the Santa onesie, to Evan but she had bought another present.

As soon as Evan mentioned presents, the atmosphere had changed into one of excitement.

"Why the ice skating rink?" Evanee asked.

"Cause it's cute and I want to take some fancy ass pictures," Jonathan replied. "Plus, Evan probably wants to show off his so called 'amazing hockey skills'."

There was a second of silence. Then Tyler finally spoke up. "Okay. So we settled on the ice rink. Now let's talk food. Where are we eating?"

"There's a gumbo place that just opened up near the mall. Sounds pretty good according to the guys who sit behind me in third period," Evan replied.

Open communication was one of the best aspects of their friendship. If they didn't have that, they probably wouldn't have been friends. Maybe Evan and David since they had know each for years, but none of the rest.

The thought had occurred to Evanee a couple of times. If everyone went their own ways, how would they fit in? She immediately saw Evan as a jock with David as his best friend. David would've been a poetry or band nerd since he was very passionate in his musical background. As for Jonathan, he'd be at a skate park with his own friends every day for hours. And Tyler would be the worst. He'd be one of the people who'd stay home and play Dungeons and Dragons in his basement.

The green eyed girl was pulled out of her odd thoughts by the ring of a bell, signaling the end of their lunch.

"Meet me at my car," Evan told everyone before they all separated to go to their classes.

----------------

"Gumbo is my new religion."

"Jonathan, as much as it pains me to say, food can not be a religion," Evanee said, finishing up her food.

The small, new gumbo restaurant was adorable in its own way. It looked like it was made of brick and looked beautiful in a way. The same way people found antiques beautiful. A small building that radiated a warm welcome and was encompassed in its own tiny bubble of the luring smell of gumbo.

The five of them were even surprised to see that the place had live music. A small jazz band with middle aged men in matching suits. They played incredibly.

After everyone finished eating, they all headed back to the car. "So are we going to everyone's houses first to pick up the gifts and change, then go back to the ice skating rink?" David asked.

"I guess so."

It took thirty minutes to drive from each house, grab the presents, wait for everyone to change, and to drive to the local ice skating rink but they finally made it.

The first thing they did was separate the presents once they were inside. Jonathan also took the liberty of packing his so called 'fancy' camera when they stopped at his house and set it up so that they all could be seen. He was ecstatic to see that the background looked amazing as well since he could see the entire rink.

There was a little click as Jonathan started recording. He sat down next to his four friends, who were each sitting next to their bundle of presents on the actual ice.

All of them, for the sake of a good video, decided to open presents one by one. Jonathan was first. One of the presents he had was fairly large, wrapped and tied with a bow. He read the tag: From Evanee.

"Holy shit! How'd you know?" Jonathan asked with wide eyes as he uncovered the present. Two large water speakers, something he had been wanting for a while.

"Reasons," Evanee stated vaguely with a smile. "My turn!"

She excitedly opened her present from David and smiled brightly. The cat headphones she saw at the beach at one of the shops they had passed. Evanee was touched that he remembered her pointing out such a small thing. A heartfelt smile and hug was given to David.

David then opened his present from Evan and so on. Each present was heartfelt in a way and everyone got four things that they wanted. Though, Evanee only got three since Evan said he'd save hers for later.

To remember the moment, Jonathan left the camera on to record them ice skating. Evan and David were pros since they both learned how to skate together at a young age. Tyler and Jonathan were also pretty good. Meanwhile, Evanee was basically dying and clutching the walls that went around the rink.

"I would help you, but this is just too amusing to watch," Jonathan teased.

"Come on," Evan latched his arm to hers and began skating away.

The green eyed girl clutched onto him and her breath hitched. "Evan! I'm going to die."

There was laughter echoing through the building.

"Here ducky," he said moving in front of her and holding both of her hands. "Okay. One step on each foot and slide."

She nodded and attempted to follow his instructions, only to fall on her butt and bring Evan down with her.

"Whoops."

Evan smiled and shook his head. "Just keep 'we going."

So as they kept practicing, everyone watched with curiosity and amusement and continued skating. After thirty minutes, Evanee was actually starting to get the hang of it.

In fact, after she learned the basics, she was a natural. Evan held her hand as they went around the rink several times, laughing and occasionally jumping.

"Now who's up for some hockey?"

In the few seconds after Evan asked the single question, everyone left the rink. They all knew, even Evanee, that Evan did not mess around when it came to hockey.

Jonathan could still remember the last time Evan invited him to play hockey with the other guys. It ended with him being shoved to the wall several times by the strong Canadian boy. Something he did not want to repeat.

"Please?"

And with another single questions, everyone trudged back to ice and grabbed a hockey stick that was by the entrance. This was going to hurt.

-----------------

They still had one more hour in the ice skating rink. Hockey turned out to be much more fun than any of them had expected. Evan wasn't as rough since Evanee was playing with them, but the same couldn't be said for the raven haired girl. She was competitive to say the least and when she was near the puck, Evan, her teammate, stayed out of the way. In the end, the couple won.

After the game, they stopped for a short hot cocoa break.

"You push hard," Tyler groaned. "I could have died."

Evanee rolled her eyes. "You're perfectly fine. It's already dark and its already ten. Fireworks are in two hours."

"Then we only have one more hour for skating," Evan said getting up. He got on the ice and reached out for Evanee's hand only for her other hand to be grabbed and seeing her skate away with Jonathan.

They skated around while Evan chased after them and in the background, they heard David singing next to the ice.

"It's Mr.Steal Your Girl."

Though, that ended when Evan had suddenly pulled him onto the ice and began skating.

Evanee and Jonathan stopped for a while and admired the other two. David and Evan were skating around, doing different tricks in sync. It didn't seem that odd since they used to skate together all the time, but Evanee couldn't help but laugh. They looked like the cutest couple.

"I ship it!" She shouted out, only to have them glare at her. Her eyes immediately widened when she saw them skating towards her and looked to Jonathan for support, only to see him skating away in a hurry. "Idiot."

Then she felt two arms lock into both of hers. The three of them, linked by their arms with Evanee in the middle, did laps around the rink. Occasionally, the two boys would lift their arm up to bring Evanee off the ground. It was another unforgettable moment she shared with them.

The hour ran out too fast and they had to leave. Instead, they stayed in the empty parking lot. The only car being Evan's in the corner. They sat down on the black asphalt and stared up at the dark sky with an array of cheap fireworks David bought at the 99 cents store.

"Fire in the hole!"

Tyler said before lighting a fuse to a small rocket that would probably hit all of them if they didn't back away. It was chaos as everyone rushed around, but the shouting suddenly stopped when the little whistle echoed and the tiny rocket flew around.

It went in circles instead of straight up and had even came close to hitting Tyler in the face. Though, he was fast enough to dodge it. They also used a bunch of little pop things that would explode if thrown onto a hard surface. David had even bought the sparklers, which Evan labeled as "fireworks on a stick."

"Evanee?"

The smiling girl looked up at her boyfriend who was holding a small box. He handed it to her, a small blush creeping onto his cheeks when his friends stared at the exchange. She opened it to see a beautiful silver necklace. It was a simple, thin chain with angel wings hanging from it.

Evan took it and gestured for her to turn around. She moved her long hair out of the way as Evan put around her neck.

"You're my angel. I love you," Evan said with a smile.

"I love you too."

Then they heard a chorus behind them and saw their friends staring at their phones.

"5, 4, 3, 2, 1," there was short pause. "Happy New Years."

The sky was quickly illuminated by a rush of colorful fireworks, bringing loud pops along with them. Everyone cheered and the couple caught each other's eyes.

Evan held her face in his hands and brought his lips to hers.
