Chapter 29
"Wake up, Evanee," Gemma said softly to her sleeping niece with a tray in her hands.
David had dropped her off around midnight earlier this morning and Evanee was exhausted after dancing for so long. He had even helped Gemma carry the light girl up the stairs and into her room since she fell asleep on the couch right after they entered the house.
The messy haired girl wouldn't budge so Gemma set the tray on Evanee's desk and lightly tickled her. "Wake up silly. I made you breakfast."
"Five more minutes," she groaned, grabbing the covers and pulling it over her head.
"Five more minutes my ass. Get up or I'm eating your food."
In an instant, Evanee was sat up and sticking her tongue out at her smiling aunt. She went to her desk and began eating the waffles and bacon her aunt had made.
"Thanks Gemma. Where's Drew?" Evanee asked sleepily, rubbing her eyes.
"He's eating downstairs, but I'm pretty sure we're supposed to leave soon," she replied, checking her watch. "Yup, we have to leave right now if we don't want to be late. I'll call you on my lunch break. Bye ducky."
Gemma kissed her on the cheek and left the room. Seconds later, Evanee could hear her aunt shouting outside at her boyfriend to 'drag his hot ass' to the car. No wonder the entire neighborhood thought she was crazy.
"Goals," the green eyed girl laughed to herself, finishing up the rest of her food. She checked her phone to see a text notification from over an hour ago.
Jonathan
Tell Evan to pick up his damn phone and come get me
She groaned and wondered what happened now. She dialed his number and waited for a response.
"Evanee?"
"Why'd you text me at five in the morning on a Sunday?" Evanee asked. Sundays were her usual resting days and she didn't want to be interrupted.
"Because I got into a fight," he answered. "I got away before the bastard could call his friends, but I'm still stuck here and I don't have any money."
Fucking idiot
"Evan is supposed to spend the day with his mom. Tell me where you are and I'll call a taxi."
In less than five minutes, Evanee's hair was nearly combed, her teeth were brushed, and she was dressed up to pick up her idiot of a friend.
This wasn't what she wanted to spend her Sunday morning doing at all.
-------------------------
As soon as Evanee paid the uber driver and Jonathan went into her home, she hit the back of his head.
"What kind of fucking idiot goes to McDonald's at five in the morning and picks a fight over spilled fries?" She asked venomously.
Jonathan scoffed. "What was I supposed to do? Let him leave after he dropped my fucking fries. Ain't nobody going to touch my food."
"Just," she couldn't find any words for his mediocre attitude. "Forget it. Just sit on the couch. I'll get the first aid kit."
The brown haired boy didn't think he needed medical attention and was about to call Evanee to come back until he saw the small wound in his arm. It was numb but it looked like hell.
When Evanee came back, Jonathan was on the couch with his shirt off.
"What the hell are you doing?"
"Waiting for you. Why are you making that face?" He stopped for a second and smiled mischievously. "I'm not making you uncomfortable am I?"
Evanee physically face palmed and slapped the back of his head once again without another word.
Thankfully, none of his wounds were that bad so no stitches or anything was needed. He just had a scars and scratches that Evanee cleaned up and put bandaids on or wrapped it. As for the several bruises, Jonathan had to hold ice packs to his bare skin for a few minutes.
"Evanee, I don't like this anymore," Jonathan whined, taking the ice pack off the bruise on his stomach.
She rolled her eyes. "Well you shouldn't have fought someone over some cheap, greasy fries then."
"Rude." He mumbled. "Can you at least sing for me?"
"Why exactly?"
He looked at her as if the answer was blatantly obvious. "So it can take my mind off of the cold."
Taking a seat on one of the beanbag chairs, Evanee thought about what song she could sing.
She sprang up from the beanbag chair and walked to the piano, sitting down and placing her hands on the keys.
The words came out beautifully even though she was mainly focused on playing the piano. Jonathan set the ice pack back on his bare stomach and closed his eyes. He hadn't heard Evanee sing since the first night they had met. (A/N: Music to the side. It's a cover but it's absolutely beautiful)
So I say to you, come home, come home
'Cause I've been waiting for you for so long, for so long
And right now there's a war between the vanities
But all I see is you and me
And the fight for you is all I've ever known
So come home
She didn't finish the rest of the song and Jonathan opened his eyes to see her small frame crouched over the piano keys. Her back was turned to him since he was laying on the couch and she slightly resembled a child. He saw that her feet didn't fully touch the floor and her long hair flowed down her back.
The blue eyed boy was about to compliment her singing, but shut his mouth when he realized that she was sniffling.
"Hey, Evanee." He stood up, ignoring the pain coming from the several bruises he had. He walked to the piano and sat beside her. She kept her head down to hide the few tears that refused to be kept a secret. "It's okay to cry, you know? You don't have to hide it. Just tell me what's on your mind."
"It's nothing. I just thought of my parents for a second. Give me a minute and I'll be fine," Evanee replied softly.
She would only know that from past experience
Jonathan rubbed her back and lightly grabbed the back of her head, leading it to his shoulder. "I miss my sister too. She died from cancer a few years ago, and I tend to cry when I think of her. She was only twelve and spent most of her life in bed. It wasn't fair, but what matters most is that she was and still is loved."
"Thank you, Jonathan," Evanee wiped away the last few tears. "God, I'm a wreck."
"Nah, you're just human." He laughed, ruffling up her hair with a smile. "Know the Corpse Bride duet by any chance?" (A/N: Search it up. It's so good)
"You play?"
He rolled his eyes and spoke in a sarcastic tone. "No, I'm just asking if you know a duet when we're in front of a goddamn piano."
Jonathan was the most childish out of the group. Maybe that's why they got along so well. Jonathan then began the duet and Evanee joined in.
She hadn't even known until that moment, but she needed the support. Her eyes focused on her idiotic and childish friend and a smile broke out.
The unexpected moments were always the best.
