Chapter 20

"You're joking, right?"

After their success, Evan had offered to drive the group home after one 'quick' stop to celebrate their small victory. During the drive, Evanee had managed to fall asleep in the backseat next to David, which Evan wasn't too fond of. So the raven haired girl had no idea that they'd end up at the beach.

"Evan, it's eight at night and it's the middle of Autumn. Did you honestly think that going to the beach right now was a good idea?" Evanee was furious; not only at Evan, but at herself as well for falling asleep with him driving.

Evanee didn't get a spoken response, but instead a sweater being thrown at her face. After muttering a few innovative words towards Evan, she put the sweater on and got out of the car along with the other guys.

Apparently, Evan had planned this because he had extra sweaters for everyone.

David wrapped his arm around Evanee's shoulder and smilsmiled at her, seeing her frown at another one of Evan's mischievous plans. "It won't be that bad. Come on, there's a good coffee shop around here. I'll buy you something."

Though he didn't show it, Evan was fuming. He didn't want to admit it, but he was jealous.

Tyler and Jonathan had also put their sweaters on and followed after David and Evanee to a small coffee shop on the beach pier, while Evan trudged behind them with a scowl.

"So, mind telling what's going between you and Evan?" Jonathan asked.

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure both of you were ready to kill each other this morning and then you guys kiss. That's some confusing shit," Tyler added in.

It was a confusion situation. In fact, Evanee didn't even know why she had gone along with it. She should have immediately slapped Evan once he kissed her, but she couldn't deny that the two kisses they had shared were amazing.

"I honestly have no clue. I've never been in a relationship before and I have no idea what this is. I just know that I hate him, but I like kissing him."

And though her explanation was short, it was very much true. Evanee didn't know what she was doing and her feelings towards Evan were very conflicting.

"Okay, hold up. Evan is my friend and all, but he's basically using you for something to entertain him. He can be like that sometimes. If you don't want to end up like everyone else he's dated, ditch his ass now," Jonathan concluded.

Evanee had dropped the subject after what Jonathan had said and they started talking about other things as they walked down the small pier  towards the coffee shop. Throughout the conversation, Evan finally stopped pouting like a child and caught up with his friends and the topic of Homecoming came up.

"My aunt Gemma is making me go since it's my senior year and I haven't been to any sports games or dances. So, I'm going by myself," Evanee said.

Knowing that Evan was playing with Evanee's feelings, David wanted to get back at him for being immature and irresponsible and he knew just how to do it. "If you don't have anyone to go with, I can take you."

"Thank you. I really didn't want to be alone."

Meanwhile, Evan went back to pouting but this time, David had noticed and was pleased with himself. Evan may be his best friend, but he knew that Evan had to stop messing with people, especially with someone like Evanee.

For a moment, David thought back to a few days ago, the day he went to apologize to Evanee. To him, Evanee was this beautiful, talented, and strong warrior. To see her break down right in front of him made him realize that she was more fragile than she appeared to be and being himself, he was going to do whatever he could to keep her safe, even from his best friend.

David still kept his arm around Evanee, but after thinking more about her, he held her closer as they walked, which didn't go unnoticed by Evan.

The five finally reached the coffee shop. There wasn't any customers in the small shop since it was a Thursday night in Autumn. As soon as she stepped through the doors, Evanee was encompassed in warmth and a smile crept onto her lips. She sat down in a large booth with Jonathan as the other three went towards the counter to order coffee and snacks.

"You do see what's happening, don't you?" Jonathan asked, staring intently.

Ever since the two weeks he had stopped talking to Evanee, they weren't as close as they were, but Jonathan did his best to be her best friend again, though Evanee hadn't really noticed.

She gave him a confused look and waited for him to continue.

The brown haired boy sighed. "I know you and Evan aren't on the best terms, but he genuinely likes you. Though, David does as well."

"What?"

The raven haired girl had a hard time believing both. She thought Evan did all of this just to mess with her and she hadn't even dared to think that David could like her. In truth, she saw herself as inferior to him and believed he deserved much more.

"I'm being blunt, but you'll have to choose soon, Evanee. If you had the decision to be with one or the other, who would it be?"

He was making this much more complicated than it had to be.

"David," Evanee answered truthfully.

"What about me?" The two didn't even notice that their friends were walking towards them with cute, disposable coffee mugs along with a glass plate filled with cookies.

Evanee smiled at him. "Nothing. We were just talking about who'd lose first at laser tag if we went again, just us."

"Wow. Thanks," David said sarcastically, a smile lighting up his features.

Then the petite girl found herself in an uncomfortable position, sitting in between the boys who Jonathan had just informed her of their feelings for her.

She shot the thin, brown haired boy a distressed look, which Jonathan could only shake his head at. He couldn't do much for her at the moment. If he kept his mouth shut, Evanee probably wouldn't feel so awkward where she was sitting.

"So how about we finish this really fast and then walk around a bit more," Evanee suggested, wanting to get out of this situation as fast as possible.

"Slow down, Evanee," Tyler said. "I kind of want to enjoy being warm before we start walking again."

---------

With the time they spent in the coffee shop, the group had talked about different things and shared stories together. It wad exactly as it was when Evanee had first met thsm and there wad no tension between any of them. Eventually, Evanee had forgotten about that awkwardness she felt and joined in on the laughter and conversation.

"I thought you said it was too cold," she heard David say behind her.

Evanee's pants were rolled up to her knees with her socks and shoes off. She was enjoying the feeling of her feet digging into the wet sand and the tiny waves splashing up against her legs.

"It is, but I haven't been to the beach in forever. I forgot how calming the waves were."

In a few seconds, Evanee turned her head to see David right beside her, doing the same thing. The tall Irish boy held his shoes in his right hand and reached out to hold Evanee's hand with his left one.

"David..."

"Just for now, babe," Evanee felt weird suddenly after hearing David call her by a nickname.  Then she realized what was happening and despised it.

She had feelings for David and Evan, and was absolutely screwed.
