A knight of the seven kingdoms

EPISODE 2

EXT. GREAT HALL OF WINTERFELL - DAY

Daenerys, Sansa, Jon and the northern lords are sitting in the great hall of Winterfell. Daenerys, Jon and Sansa are sitting in front of everyone. Daenerys in the middle, Jon to her left and Sansa to her right. Bran is sitting to the far right. Jamie Lannister is standing in the middle of the room. Daenerys is looking at Jamie.

DAENERYS
When I was a child, my brother would tell me a bed time story about the man who murdered our father. Who stabbed him in the back and cut his throat. Who sat down on the iron throne and watched as his blood poured onto the floor. He told me other stories as well. About all the things we would do to that man, once we took back the seven kingdoms and had him in our grasp.

She pauses and looks at Jamie. He has the look on his face that says "I've heard this speech before, I know what you will say next".

DAENERYS
But Viserys was cruel, and so was my father.

Jamie looks at her surprised.

DAENERYS
I know what my father was. I know about the innocent people who had to suffer because of his cruelty. What you did saved millions of people's lives.

Jamie is very surprised, and so are the other lords. Daenerys proves yet again that she isn't her father.

DAENERYS
But that is not why we are here. Your sister promised to send her army north. I don't see an army. Only a man with one hand. Your sister lied to me.

JAMIE
She lied to me as well. She never had any intention of sending her army north. She has Euron Greyjoy's fleet and twenty thousand fresh troops.

Daenerys looks at Tyrion with an angry expression. He had failed her once again. He made a big mistake, once again.

Tyrion doesn't seem too surprised by what Jamie is saying.

JAMIE
The Golden Company from Essos, bought and paid for. Even if we defeat the dead, she'll have more than enough to destroy the survivors.

DAENERYS
We?

JAMIE
I promised to fight for the living. I intend to keep that promise.

Daenerys is torn. She doesn't know if she can trust him or not. He might have conspired with his sister and made up a plan. But then again, why would he risk traveling north, knowing he could be killed?

Tyrion steps froward. Daenerys looks at him.

TYRION
Your grace. He came here alone, knowing full well how he'd be received. Why would he do that if he weren't telling the truth?

Daenerys thoughtfully looks at Jamie.

DAENERYS
Perhaps he trusts his little brother to defend him.

Tyrion looks worried. He is worried about Jamie. If they decide they don't trust him, he could be in serious danger.

SANSA
You're right. We can't trust him.

Everyone turns to Sansa.

SANSA
He attacked my father in the streets. He tried to destroy my house and my family, the same as he did to yours.

She looks at Daenerys.

JAMIE
Do you want me to apologise? I won't. We were at war. Everything I did, I did for my house and my family. I'd do it all again.

BRAN
The things we do for love.

Jamie looks at Bran shocked. It was the same thing Jamie had said to Bran right before he pushed him out of that window. Jamie had hoped Bran wouldn't remember. But unfortunately he did. Far too well.

DAENERYS
So why have you abandoned your house and family now?

Jamie glances at Brienne, who is siting close to the wall on his Left.

JAMIE
Because this goes beyond loyalty. This is about survival.

Brienne stands up and walks up in front of Jamie, facing Daenerys and the others.

BRIENNE
You don't know me well, your grace. But I know Ser Jamie. He is a man of honour. I was his captor once. But when we were both taken prisoners and the men holding us tried to force themselves on me, Ser Jamie defended me. And lost his hand because of it.

Both Sansa's and Dany's faces soften as they listen to the story.

BRIENNE
Without him, my lady...

Brienne looks at Sansa.

BRIENNE
...You wouldn't be alive. He armed me, armoured me, and sent me to find you and bring you home because he'd sworn an oath to your mother.

Sansa has a compassionate look on her face.

SANSA
You vouch for him?

BRIENNE
I do

SANSA
You would fight beside him?

BRIENNE
I would.

SANSA
I trust you with my life. If you trust him with yours, we should let him stay.

Brienne's story really touches Daenerys, bit she still isn't quite sure. She needs a second opinion.

DAENERYS
What does the warden of the north have to say about it?

Daenerys turns to Jon. His eyes are looking down at the table. She notices that he is distant, her face has a slight look of worry.

Jon notices that people are waiting for his response.

JON SNOW
We need every man we can get.

Daenerys looks at Jamie and Brienne. She nods at them.

DAENERYS
Very well.

Brienne is relieved. She breathes out, as if she had been holding her breath for a while.

BRIENNE
Thank you, Your grace.

Daenerys stand up, so does everyone else.

People start leaving the room.

When Daenerys turns to face Jon, he has already left. He hasn't spoken a word to her in a while. She knows something is wrong, she can feel it.

Daenerys leaves the room. Tyrion, Varys and Jorah follow her. As they are walking, Daenerys confronts Tyrion.

DAENERYS
Either you knew Cersei was lying and let me believe otherwise, or you didn't know at all. Which makes you either a traitor or a fool.

TYRION
I was a fool.

Daenerys stops and turns to face him. She is angry with him. But then again, who could blame her?

DAENERYS
Not for the first time. Your mistakes has already cost us enough. Fail me again and I'll find another hand.

Daenerys walks off.

Tyrion turns to Jorah and Varys.

TYRION
I suspect one of you will be wearing this before it's all over.

Tyrion forces a smile as if he is joking. But they all know he isn't. There is a moment of silence before they go their separate ways.

EXT. THE FORGE - DAY

The smiths continue to forge weapons out of dragon glass. Gendry is seen working on a piece of dragonglass. He turns around and Arya is standing behind him.

GENDRY
Don't you have something better to do?

ARYA
You made my weapon yet?

GENDRY
Just as soon as I'm done making a few thousand of these

He gestures towards the weapon lying on his bench. Arya doesn't seem very impressed. She picks it up and looks at it.

ARYA
You should make mine first. And make sure it's stronger than this.

Gendry takes the blade from her hand and shoves it into the bench in front of him. It cuts quite deep into the table.

GENDRY
It's strong enough.

Gendry keeps on working and walks away. Arya follows him.

GENDRY
It's going to be a lot safer in the great hall, you know.

ARYA
Are you going to be in the great hall?

GENDRY
No but...

ARYA
But you're a fighter.

GENDRY
I do my share.

ARYA
You've fought them?

GENDRY
I did. Some of them.

ARYA
How many?

GENDRY
A few. That was enough.

ARYA
What are they like?

GENDRY
Bad. Really bad.

Arya is unimpressed by that answer. She was looking for something more describing.

ARYA
"Really bad"? Even a smith's apprentice can do better than "really bad". What do they look like? What do they smell like? How do they move? How hard are they to kill?

Gendry starts getting a bit annoyed with her.

GENDRY
Look, I know you want to fight. And I know you're not scared of rapers or murderers or this. But this is different. This is... This is death.

Arya slightly raises her eyebrows.

GENDRY
You want to know what they are like? Death. That's what they're like.

Arya spots a basket of dragonglass blades. She picks one up and looks at it.

ARYA
I know death.

She throws the blade at a wooden pilar in front of her.

ARYA
He's got many faces.

She picks up another one, and throws that one as well.

ARYA
I look forward to seeing this one.

She picks up a third blade and throws it.

Gendry looks at the three blades in amazement. All three blades hit the exact same spot on the wooden pillar. It takes some serious skills to do that.

Arya walks up to him.

ARYA
My weapon?

GENDRY
I'll get right on it.

Arya walks off. Gendry continuous to stare at the blades. He's starting to realise that Arya is a lot more skilled that she seems.

EXT. THE GODS WOODS - DAY

Bran is sitting in front of the tree in the gods woods. He is staring into the tree, deep in thought.

Jamie is seen walking up behind him. He walks up and stands beside bran.

JAMIE
I'm sorry for what I did to you.

Bran looks at Jamie.

BRAN
You weren't sorry then. You were protecting your family.

JAMIE
I'm not that person anymore.

BRAN
You still would be, if you hadn't pushed me out of that window. And I would still be Brandon Stark.

Jamie looks at him confused.

JAMIE
You're not?

BRAN
No. I'm something else now.

Jamie is still confused. But he doesn't feel like questioning him.

JAMIE
You're not angry at me?

BRAN
I'm not angry at anyone.

JAMIE
Why didn't you tell them?

BRAN
You won't be able to help in this fight if I let them murder you first.

JAMIE
What about afterwards?

BRAN
How do you know there is an afterwards?

Jamie looks at him with a worried expression. He hadn't considered that they might loose this war. They might loose to death.

EXT. THE COURTYARD OF WINTERFELL - DAY

Tyrion is walking through the courtyard as the others prepare for battle. He spots his brother. They walk towards each other.

JAMIE
Well, here we are.

TYRION
Yes. Here we are. Together again.

They look up at the balcony and notices a few men. They seem very displeased with the Lannister brothers and spits down at them.

TYRION
And their masses rejoice.

They start walking away together.

JAMIE
How do they feel about their new queen?

TYRION
She's your new queen too. They remember what happened the last time Targaryens brought dragons north. They'll come around once they see Daenerys is different.

JAMIE
And she is? Different?

TYRION
She let you live, didn't she. Even though you murdered her father.

JAMIE
He father was a mad man.

TYRION
For all she knows, you could be conspiring to kill her as well.

Jamie thinks about it and realises that Tyrion has a point.

JAMIE
I'm sure she wasn't thrilled to hear about Cersei.

Tyrion stops in front of his brother.

TYRION
None of us were. But then again, we shouldn't have expected anything else. Cersei isn't exactly known for keeping her word.

They continue walking. They walk up the stairs towards the walls of Winterfell.

TYRION
I didn't expect that you would leave her, with the baby and everything.

JAMIE
I told you I would fight for the living. She might have lied, but I didn't.

TYRION
Daenerys shouldn't have listened to me. She never should have trusted Cersei.

JAMIE
Don't be too hard on yourself. She's fooled me more than anybody.

Tyrion stops again, in the middle of the stairs. He looks at Jamie.

TYRION
She never fooled you. You always knew exactly what she was, and you loved her anyway.

They both reach the walls of winterfell. They look over the edge.

TYRION
So, we're going to die at Winterfell. Not the death I would have chosen. I always pictured myself dying in my own bed, the age of eighty, with a belly full of whine and...

TYRION AND JAMIE
...A girls mouth around my cock.

They both laugh and smile at each other.

TYRION
At least Cersei won't get to murder me. I'm sure I'll feel some satisfaction denying her that pleasure while I'm being ripped apart by dead men.

As Tyrion is talking, something catches Jamies attention. He walks away.

TYRION
Maybe after I'm dead, I'll march down to King's Landing and rip her apart.

Tyrion smiles at the thought of murdering his sister as a wight. Then he turns around and notices that Jamie is standing on the other side of the wall. He is watching Brienne as she is training a couple of soldiers.

EXT. THE FIELDS OF WINTERFELL - DAY

Brienne is walking around the field, training soldiers. She is watching as Podrick teaches them how to fight. Podrick has improved a lot. She notices Jamie walking up to her.

BRIENNE
Ser Jamie.

JAMIE
Lady Brienne.

They both watch Podrick as he is instructing the soldiers.

JAMIE
He's come a long way.

BRIENNE
He's all right. Still has a lot to learn.

Brienne continues to walk around the field. Jamie follows her.

JAMIE
I'm sure you'll teach him.

Brienne finds Jamies response quite weird. It's very unlike him.

JAMIE
I've been told you're commanding the left flank.

Brienne is a little awkward. Why is he being so polite?

BRIENNE
I am. It's, uh it's good ground.

JAMIE
It is.

BRIENNE
The rise, it should give us some advantage. If we can keep a tight formation, we might be able to beat them back.

JAMIE
Yes, I think you're right

BRIENNE
What are you doing?

JAMIE
What?

BRIENNE
I think you know.

JAMIE
I truly don't.

BRIENNE
We have never had a conversation last this long without you insulting me. Not once.

JAMIE
You want me to insult you?

BRIENNE
No!

JAMIE
Good.

They both look away, just like stubborn children do. Then Jamie looks at Brienne with a softer expression.

JAMIE
I came back to Winterfell because I'm not the fighter I used to be. But I'd be honoured to serve under your command, if you'll have me.

Brienne is both touched and surprised by his words. She never would have expected him to say something like this.

BRIENNE
I better get back.

Brienne walks away and Jamie watches her as she walks.

EXT. THE LIBRARY - DAY

Sansa and Yohn Royce (a knight of the vale) is discussing battle plans for the great war.

ROYCEThe moment we can get the last infantryman out onto the field, we should shut the gates.SANSAKeep them open for as long as you can. There are still people coming in from the countryside.ROYCEVery well.

Maester Wolkan enters the room.

MAESTERLady Sansa.SANSAYes, what is it?

EXT. THE GREAT HALL - DAY

Sansa walks into the great hall and sees Theon and a few of his men standing in the middle of the room. Sansa gets tears in her eyes when she sees him. They haven't seen each other since he saved her from Ramsay.

THEONLady Sansa.SANSAJon told me you were going to save your sister.THEONI did. She only has a few ships, and she couldn't sale them here. So she's sailing to the Iron islands instead, to take them back in Daenerys name.SANSAWhy aren't you with her?THEONI want to fight for Winterfell, Lady Sansa. If you'll have me.

Tears fall from her eyes. Not tears of sadness, but tears of happiness. She walks towards him and hugs him. She cares deeply for Theon. He hugs her back and closes his eyes. They both cherish the moment.

EXT. DAENERYS' CHAMBER - DAY

Daenerys is sitting on a chair in her chambers. Missandei is standing behind her, braiding her hair. Daenerys is very quiet. She is worried about Jon. Was he avoiding her? If he was, then why?

MISSANDEI
You're very quiet my queen. Is something wrong?

DAENERYS
No. I just have a lot to think about. The great war is almost upon us.

She doesn't want to worry Missandei. She has it hard enough as it is. The northerners look at Missandei as an intruder, just like they do with Dany.

DAENERYS
How are you doing? Here in the north?

MISSANDEI
They don't seem to appreciate our help.

DAENERYS
No, they don't.

MISSANDEI
If they don't want us here, your grace, then why are we helping them? Why are we fighting their war? I don't like the way they look at us here.

Daenerys turns around and looks up at Missandei.

DAENERYS
This isn't just their war. The Night King has takes just as much from us as they have for them.

Missandei nods.

MISSANDEI
It's so cold up here.

DAENERYS
Then it's good that you have Grey worm by your side to keep you warm.

Missandei smiles, Daenerys smiles with her.

The door opens and Ser Jorah walks through.

Daenerys gently nods at Missandei, showing that she can leave them. Missandei leaves the room.

JORAH
Forgive me, khaleesi.

Daenerys has a soft expression and smiles at him.

DAENERYS
Have you done something to offend me?

JORAH
Many things.

DAENERYS
Long ago and long forgiven.

JORAH
Khaleesi. I sense that there is something on your mind.

Daenerys looks at the ground.

JORAH
Could it possibly have something to do with a certain Jon Snow?

DAENERYS
He's avoiding me. There is something weighing him down, but I don't know what it is.

Jorah sits on a chair in front of Daenerys.

JORAH
You're with child.

She looks away, confirming his suspicion.

No one but Dany, Jon and Missandei knows about her pregnancy. At first she is surprised by the fact that Jorah had noticed. But then she remembers that he had been with her during her first pregnancy. It is starting to get harder for her to hide it.

JORAH
Khaleesi. When you chose him, it broke my heart. And I was angry, angry with him. But I haven't seen you so happy in a long time.

Daenerys smiles.

JORAH
And he loves you. You can tell by the way he looks at you. It's the same way Tyrion looks at his wine.

They both laugh.

JORAH
Go to him.

EXT. THE CRYPTS - DAY

Jon is standing in front of Lyanna's statue, deep in though.

Daenerys is seen walking up to him.

She stops about three meters away from him. She wants him to see her. It's almost as if she's waiting for permission to approach him.

Jon notices her. He looks at her and gives her a gentle smile.

She walks up to him. No one says anything. They don't have to. She knows something is wrong, and he knows that she noticed.

She stops beside him. She hugs his back and looks at the statue with him. He places his hand on hers.

DAENERYS
Who is that?

JON SNOW
Lyanna Stark.

Daenerys looks at the ground. She knows that name. It is the name of the woman Rhaegar had supposedly kidnapped and raped.

DAENERYS
My brother Rhaegar... Everyone told me he was decent and kind. He liked to sing. He gave money to poor children.

She looks up at the statue.

DAENERYS
And he raped her.

Jon is happy that Daenerys told him this. He knew nothing of his newfound father. It comforts him to know that he was a good man. Jon can't keep his identity a secret. He can't hide it from her. He needs her to know.

JON SNOW
He didn't.

Dany looks at Jon.

JON SNOW
He loved her.

Jon turns to face her. She is confused. What is he going to say?

JON SNOW
They were married in secret. After Rhaegar fell on the trident, she had a son. Robert would have murdered the baby if he ever found out, and Lyanna knew it. So the last this she did, as she bled to death on her birthing bed, was give the boy to her brother Ned Stark to raise as his bastard.

Daenerys eyes widen as she starts to understand where he is getting with the story.

JON SNOW
My name. My real name. Is Aegon Targaryen.

Daenerys takes a step back, processing the information she just heard.

DAENERYS
Who told you this?

JON SNOW
Bran. He saw it.

Dany is confused.

DAENERYS
He saw it?

JON SNOW
And Samwell confirmed it. He read about their marriage at the Citadel without even knowing what it meant.

Daenerys looks at the ground. Still processing what she heard. He can see that she is doubting it.

JON SNOW
It's true Dany. I know it is.

Daenerys looks at him. She trusts Jon, she truly does. If he knows it's true, then she doesn't doubt him.

She doesn't know what to say. What could she say?

She takes a step towards him. She wraps her arm around him and hugs him.

DAENERYS
(Whispering)
Blood of my blood...

Jon hugs her back, he buries his head in her shoulder. He is ashamed. He is in love with his aunt. That isn't honourable. It isn't right. But then again. How wrong can it be? Having her in his arms didn't feel wrong. It never did.

And their child. He is having a child with his aunt. What will they do now?

In that moment, he didn't care. He just wanted to hold her, he wanted her to comfort him.

Daenerys feels for him. She knows this must be difficult for him. Jon couldn't even bear to lie to Cersei. How badly would he feel about having been lied to his whole life?

Then it hits her. He's the true heir to the iron throne. And she isn't. The throne isn't her right anymore. What will they do now? Will she give the throne to him? Jon won't want it, he doesn't want to rule. What will the northerners say when they find out? New questions started to arise.

But in that moment she didn't care. For once in a very long time, she wasn't alone anymore. She wasn't the only Targaryen left in the world. And for this, she was happy.

EXT. THE COURTYARD OF WINTERFELL - DAY

Davos is distributing food to the men, women and children. Everyone is worried about the war.

A few young men walk up to him. He pours some soup into their bowls.

MAN
Milord, we're not soldiers.

DAVOS
You are now. Look, I made it through most of my years without ever getting near a fight, but then I survived the battle of the bastards. Right outside of these walls. If I can live through that, you can live through this. They'll outfit you with weapons at the forge. Right that way.

He points them to the forge.

MAN
Thank you.

The boys walk off. Gilly is seen with a few women near by.

GILLY
When the time comes, you'll be in the great hall. That's the safest place to be. Through that door right over there.

WOMAN
Thank you.

Davos keeps pouring soup to people. Then a little girl approaches him.

TEELA
Which way should I go?

He looks at the girl. She is a mere child. She has a burn mark on one side of her face. She reminds him of Shireen. Shireen Baratheon.

DAVOS
Which way do you want to go?

TEELA
All the children will be inside when the time comes. But both me brothers were soldiers. I want to fight too.

Davos is surprised by the girls talk. So much that he doesn't know what to say. Gilly approaches them and she sits beside the girl.

GILLY
That's good to hear. I'm going to be in the great hall with my son, and I'd feel a lot better with you down there. To protect us.

DAVOS
I'm sure a lot of people would.

The girl looks at Davos with a proud expression.

TEELA
All right. I'll defend the great hall then.

The little girl walks off, and Davos watches her as she does. Oh how she misses Shireen. She used to call him the onion knight. She used to give him books, and she was the one who taught him how to read. She had been like a daughter to him. Although she is gone, the memory Davos had of her will never fade.

EXT. THE CRYPTS - DAY

Daenerys and Jon are standing in front of Ned's statue. They are both silent. They don't need to speak.

JON SNOW
The last time I saw him.

Dany looks at him.

JON SNOW
He said that we would talk about my mother.

Jon smiles to himself. Then that smile disappears. Daenerys gives him a compassionate look.

JON SNOW
I'd never imagined that this is what he would've told me.

Daenerys moves closer to him and lifts her hand to cup his face. But he takes a step back.

Daenerys is confused. He has already told her the secret. What else is bothering him?

He turns to her.

JON SNOW
Doesn't it bother you? That we are related?

Now she understands. Incest has never been a problem to her. It is in fact normal. However, she has forgotten that incest is only normal to the Targaryens. Although Jon is a Targaryen, he hasn't been raised as one.

DAENERYS
I can't say it does. Inbreeding wasn't only common in House Targaryen, it was expected to keep the bloodline pure. My parents were siblings. I grew up thinking I would marry my brother.

Jon looks at her thoughtfully

DAENERYS
However, I understand that isn't a custom in the north.

Daenerys is starting to worry. They are going to have a child together. But can Jon continue his relationship with her? She knows how important honour is for him. He always does the right thing. And to him, that isn't  right. No matter what his heart said.

JON SNOW
Dany......

The horns blow, indicating that someone is approaching the gates. Both Daenerys and Jon leave the crypts and walk up to the courtyard.

MAN
Open the gates!

Jon and Dany walk up to the gates. A tall and handsome man rides in through the gates of Winterfell. With him are about one thousand men.

The tall man jumps of his horse. It's Daario Naharis and the Second sons. They have come to fight for Daenerys against the dead.

Daario walks to Daenerys and kneels down in front of her.

DAARIO
My queen.

Although his (Jon's) relation to Dany troubles him, Jon can't help but despise the way this man is looking at his queen.

Daario stands up again. Daenerys smiles at him. Despite everything, she is happy to see him. She never truly loved him, but she had cared for him.

Jon is staring at Daario, he doesn't like him. He doesn't know him, but he doesn't like him.

Daario notices and stares back at Jon.

Daenerys notices both of them looking at each other.

DAENERYS
Jon Snow, this is Daario Naharis. Captain of the Second sons. Daario, this is Jon Snow, warden of the north.

They keep staring at each other. It's a little awkward.

DAENERYS
What are you doing in WInterfell? I left you in charge of maintaining the peace in Meereen.

DAARIO
Meereen has been in peace ever since you left. Besides, I received word that you needed all the help you could get in the upcoming war.

Daenerys is confused. She hasn't sent for him. Neither has Jorah or Grey worm.

DAENERYS
Who sent for you?

TYRION
I did.

Daenerys turns around and sees Tyrion standing behind her.

TYRION
For once, I decided to do something that wasn't foolish.

Daenerys slightly smiles at him.

DAENERYS
I appreciate it.

They both look at each other with warm looks. Even though Tyrion has made mistakes, serious mistakes, Daenerys still cares for him.

MAN
Riders coming in!

Jon and Daenerys look at the gates.

Edd, Beric and the others ride through the gates. Jon sees Edd.

He smiles. He walks towards him to hug him.

Suddenly Jon is tackled by a big fellow. Tormund.

Tormund hugs Jon.

TORMUND
My little crow.

JON SNOW
I thought we'd lost you.

TORMUND
Almost.

Jon walks up to Edd and hugs him. Jon shakes hands with Beric.

JON SNOW
How did you find each other?

EDD
We met up at the Last Hearth.

TORMUND
The dead got there first.

Jon's smile disappears and his heart sinks at what Tormund is saying.

JON SNOW
The Umbers?

BERIC
Fighting for the Night King now.

Jon is saddened and worried by the news.

TORMUND
We had to travel around them to get here. Whoever's not here now is with them.

JON SNOW
How long do we have?

TORMUND
Before the sun comes up tomorrow.

Jon is very worried. Tormund turns and looks around the courtyard.

TORMUND
The big woman still here?

EXT. WINTERFELL - DAY

The preparations for the battles are shown as Jon speaks. Soldiers training, smiths forging and building weapons.

JON SNOW
They're coming. We have dragonglass and Valyrian steel But there are too many of them. Far too many. Our enemy doesn't tire. Doesn't stop. Doesn't feel. We can't beat them in a straight fight.

They are standing in a room with a big map of winterfell on a table. All the main characters are standing around the table. Jon, Tryion, Bran, Daenerys, Arya, Sam, Jamie, Sansa, Brienne, Edd, Tormund, Daario and so on.

JAMIE
So what can we do?

JON SNOW
The Night king made them all. They follow his command. If he falls, getting to him may be our best chance.

JAMIE
If that's true then he'll never expose himself.

BRAN
Yes, he will.

Everyone looks at Bran.

BRAN
He'll be looking for me.

SAM
Why? What does he want?

Bran turns to Jon.

BRAN
Do you remember Craster?

SAM
Craster? Gilly's father?

JON SNOW
I couldn't forget even if I wanted to. He had children with his daughters and left the boys in the woods.

BRAN
He didn't just leave them in the woods.

Everyone listens carefully.

BRAN
He made a pact with the dead, that they would leave mankind alone as long as he gave them his sons. The white walkers. Most of the are Gilly's brother. When the brothers of the Night's Watch killed Craster, the pact was no longer kept. That's why they marched south.

SAM
Why did they want his sons?

BRAN
It's the only way for them to reproduce. They can't have children like men can, so they have to use other methods.

DAARIO
If they made a pact with him, doesn't that mean that we could as well?

Jon gives Daario the side eye.

JON SNOW
We're not going to sacrifice children to their army. I've seen what Craster did. Words couldn't describe how horrible it was.

SAM
That still doesn't explain why he'll be looking for you.

BRAN
Because I'm the only one who knows how to defeat him.

Everyone is surprised.

JON SNOW
How?

BRAN
The same way he was created. A piece of dragon glass through his heart.

SAM
But now that you've told us, he won't have to come after you anymore.

BRAN
As long as there is a three eyed raven alive, his secret will never be safe.

DAARIO
How will he find you?

BRAN
His mark is on me.

Bran pulls up hi sleeve and shows the mark on his arm.

JON SNOW
We'll put you in the great hall, where it's safest.

BRAN
No. We need to lure him into the open before his army destroys us all. I'll wait for him in the Godswood.

SANSA
You want us to use you as bait?

ARYA
We're not leaving you alone out there.

THEON
He won't be.

Everyone looks at Theon.

THEON
I'll stay with him. With the iron born.

Theon looks at Bran

THEON
I took this castle from you. Let me defend you now.

Bran nods at him.

JON SNOW
We'll hold off the rest of them for as long as we can.

TYRION
When the time comes, Ser Davos and I will be on the walls, to give Daenerys the signal to light the trench.

DAENERYS
Ser Davos is perfectly capable of waving a torch on his own. You'll be in the great hall.

TYRION
Your grace, I have fought before, I can do it again. Alongside the men and women risking their lives.

DAENERYS
There are thousands of them and only one of you. You can't fight as well as they can, but you can think better than any of them. You're here because of your mind. If we survive, I'll need it.

JON SNOW
The dragons should give us an edge in the field.

SANSA
If they are in the field, they're not protecting Bran.

JON SNOW
They need to be near him. Not too near, or the Night King won't come. But close enough to pursue him when he does.

TORMUND
We're all going to die.

Tormund looks at Brienne.

TORMUND
But at least we die together.

Brienne looks at him, a little bit disgusted, like she always does.

JON SNOW
Let's get some rest.

Everyone starts to leave the room.

Bran turns to Jon.

BRAN
Rickard.

JON SNOW
What?

BRAN
The Night King's real name is Rickard.

Bran rolls away. Jon is confused as to why Bran told him this. Daenerys has almost left the room when Jon calls her.

JON SNOW
Your grace.

Daenerys stays behind. Daario notices, but he leaves the room anyway.

Everyone has left and they're all alone.

JON SNOW
I don't want you out there tonight.

Daenerys is shocked by what he is saying.

DAENRYS
What?

JON SNOW
Take Drogon and fly back to Dragonstone. I'll send a raven when the battle is done.

DAENERYS
You need me out there. The dragons can do the most damage to the dead and I'm the only one who rides them

JON SNOW
It's not safe.

DAENERYS
I will not stand by while my people fight a war for me. Why shouldn't I risk my life when they do?

JON SNOW
Because your are not just risking your life.

Daenerys looks down and puts her hand on her stomach.

JON SNOW
Daenerys, our child...

DAENERYS
...Will never have the chance to draw its first breath if we don't defeat the army of the dead.

They both look at each other.

DAENERYS
If we don't win, I'll die anyway. But without me and the dragons. We don't stand a chance of winning.

Jon looks down on the ground for a moment. Then he nods at her.

They both look at each other, but none of them move. It's almost as if they are waiting for the other person to make the first move. But none of them do anything. They just look at each other. Daenerys is the first to break eye contact. She walks out of the room, hoping he'll stop her. But he doesn't. Jon's eyes follow her as she exits the room. Then he looks at the table and the battle plans. His eyes are sad.

EXT. THE COURTYARD OF WINTERFELL - EVENING

Grey worm is walking through the courtyard, preparing for the battle. He spots Missandei. She approaches a couple of children who are sitting down in the court yard.

MISSANDEI
Hello.

They look at her like she did something to scare them. One of the children grab their little sister and walks away. The rest of the children walk away as well.

Grey worm sees it. He walks up to Missandei. He notices that the way they looked at her bothers her.

GREY WORM
When Daenerys takes her throne there will be no place for us here. I am loyal to my queen. I will fight for her until her enemies are defeated, but when the war is over and she has won, do you want to grow old in this place?

Missandei looks around. All the people walking by them are giving them a disapproving look.

GREY WORM
Is there nothing else you want to do, nothing else you want to see?

Missandei thinks for a while.

MISSANDEI
Naath.

Missandei smiles.

MISSANDEI
I'd like to see the beaches again.

GREY WORM
Then I will take you there.

MISSANDEI
My people are peaceful. We cannot protect ourselves.

GREY WORM
My people are not peaceful. We will protect you.

He looks at her lovingly. She smiles at him. The world is ending. But at least they have each other.

EXT. THE WALLS OF WINTERFELL - NIGHT

Sam and Jon are standing on the walls of Winterfell. Ghost is standing behind them. They are looking out at the field.

SAM
Did you tell her?

JON SNOW
I did.

SAM
How'd She take it?

JON SNOW
Very well.

Sam is quiet for a moment. Then he starts talking again.

SAM
I know it must've been hard for you. Leaving the woman you love.

JON SNOW
I didn't leave her

Sam is confused.

SAM
But, she's your aunt.

JON SNOW
She's having my child.

SAM
Oh. Well.. that's. Complicated.

Sam has a thoughtful look on his face.

SAM
If she's your aunt. Then your baby will be both your child, and your cousin. And she....

Jon looks at Sam with an irritated look. A look that simply says, shut up.

Sam stops talking.

Edd walks up to them and stands beside them

EDD
And now our watch begins.

Edd looks at Sam.

EDD
Gilly? Little Sam?

SAM
They'll be safe in the great hall.

JON SNOW
If you want to join them. To protect them.

Sam has a slightly offended look on his face.

SAM
Everyone seems to forget that I was the first man to kill a White Walker. I've killed Thenns.

EDD
Thenn.

SAM
I've saved Gilly more than once. I stole a considerable number of books from the Citadel library, survived the Fist of the First Men. You need me out there.

EDD
Well, if that's what it's come to, we really are fucked.

SAM
Well, calling you "fucked" wouldn't be strictly accurate.

Jon laughs. Sam laughs with him. Edd is a bit annoyed.

EDD
Samwell Tarly. Slayer of White Walkers. Lover of Ladies. As if we needed any more signs the world was ending.

They are silent for a moment, and they just look out at the field. Sam takes a deep breath.

SAM
Think back to where we started. Us, Grenn, Pyp.

JON SNOW
Now it's just us three.

EDD
Last man left, burn the rest of us.

EXT. BIG FIREPLACE ROOM - NIGHT

Tyrion and Jamie are sitting in front of a fire. They are both drinking.

TYRION
I wish Father were here.

Jamie looks at him confused.

TYRION
I would love to see the look on his face when he realises his two sons are about to die defending Winterfell.

Jamie thinks about it for a moment. Then he bursts out laughing, they both do.

JAMIE
That would be something to see.

They both look into the fire again.

TYRION
I remember the first time we were here, the first time I saw this hall.

Jamie smiles.

JAMIE

Mm.

TYRION
You were a golden lion. I was a drunken whoremonger. It was all so simple.

JAMIE
It wasn't so simple. I was sleeping with my sister and you had one friend in the world who was sleeping with his sister.

TYRION
I was speaking in relative terms.

They both laugh again.

TYRION
Do you miss it?

JAMIE
Of course I miss it. Well, my golden-lion days are done, but whoremongering is still an option for you.

Tyrion takes a deep breath.

TYRION
It's not. Things would be easier if it were. The perils of self-betterment.

They hear the door open. They turn around and see Brienne and Podrick walking through the door. Jamie stands up.

TYRION
Oh! My lady.

BRIENNE
Oh, we didn't mean to interrupt. We were just looking for somewhere warm to......

TYRION
To contemplate your imminent death. You've come to the right place.

Tyrion jumps out of his chair and walks to the other side of the room and pours himself a glass of wine.

TYRION
You want some of this piss? It's not bad.

Jamie turns to Brienne.

JAMIE
It's not good either.

PODRICK
Thank you, milord.

Podrick walks towards Tryion, then Brienne stops him.

BRIENNE
I don't think that's wise. The battle might start at any moment.

Podrick looks at her like "please mom."

BRIENNE
Half cup.

Tyrion gestures towards Brienne.

TYRION
And you?

BRIENNE
No, thank you. I should try and get some sleep.

TYRION
You really think any of us are going to sleep tonight? Join us.

BRIENNE
All right. Just a bit.

Jamie and Brienne sit down. Tyrion sneakily pours Podrick so much wine that his cup runs over. Thankfully Brienne doesn't notice. Podrick and Tyrion smile at each other.

Davos and Tormund enter the room.

DAVOS
Well, what do we have here?

TYRION
Ser Davos, join us.

DAVOS
No, not for me, thanks. Came here for this.

He walks up to the fireplace and warms his hands.

DAVOS
I figured I could wait to die freezing my balls off out there or wait to die nice and warm in here.

Tormund sits beside Brienne. He leans over to her.

TORMUND
It could be our last night in this world, you know.

BRIENNE
Yes, well, I'm glad you're here.

Tormund gets a hopeful expression on his face. Soon Brienne realises what she just said and quickly corrects herself.

BRIENNE
[STAMMERING] Here fighting with us. Glad you survived Eastwatch.

TYRION
Would you like a drink?

TORMUND
Brought my own.

Tormund turns to Jamie.

TORMUND
They call you King Killer.

JAMIE
I'm sure someone does.

The correct name would be kingslayer.

TORMUND
They call me "Giantsbane". Want to know why? I killed a giant when I was 10. Then I climbed right into bed with his wife. When she woke up, you know what she did? Suckled me at her tit for three months. Thought I was her baby. That's how I got so strong. Giant's milk.

Tormund raises the cup he has filled with milk (presumably goats milk).

He starts drinking from it.

His gulps are very loud and the milk is spilling all over his beard. He drinks it for a long long time.

The noises and the spilling are quite disgusting, and the other look at each other in confusion and disgust.

DAVOS
Maybe I will have that drink.

EXT. THE WALLS OF WINTERFELL - NIGHT

The hound is sitting on the side of the walls of Winterfell. He is alone.

Arya approaches him and sits beside him.

She doesn't say anything.

The hound turns to her.

HOUND
You never used to shut up. Now you're just sitting there like a mute.

ARYA
Guess I've changed.

She looks at him.

ARYA
What are you doing up here?

HOUND
What's it look like?

ARYA
No, I mean, what are you doing up here? You joined the Brotherhood.
You went beyond the Wall with Jon. You're here now. Why? When was the last time you fought for anyone but yourself?

HOUND
I fought for you, didn't I?

She thinks about it for a moment. She always though of him as a selfish bastard. But really, he did fight for her. Beric approaches them.

HOUND
Oh, for fuck's sake. May as well be at a bloody wedding.

Beric turns to Arya.

BERIC
My lady. It's good to see you again. I'm sorry we parted the way we did.

The hound turns to Arya.

HOUND
Was he on your list?

ARYA
For a little while.

BERIC
That's all right.

Beric sits down in front of them.

BERIC
The Lord of Light has brought us together all the same. This is his moment. When light...

HOUND
Thoros isn't here anymore, so I hope you're not about to give a sermon. Because if you are, the Lord of Light's gonna wonder why he brought you back 19 times just to watch you die when I chuck you over this fucking wall.

Arya stands up and starts walking away.

HOUND
Where are you going?

ARYA
I'm not spending my final hours with you two miserable old shits.

She leaves them both and the Hound looks at Beric with a bothered look. He doesn't wasn't to spend his final hours with this guy, but he doesn't seem to have much choice.

EXT. THE FORGE - DAY

Gendry is working on some weapons. A spear is lying beside him. Arya enters and walks up to Gendry. He notices her and she gestures towards the spear next to him.

ARYA
That for me?

Arya picks it up and looks at it. She spins it around and tests it.

ARYA
This'll work.

GENDRY
Last time you saw me, you wanted me to come to Winterfell. Took the long road, but...

ARYA
What did the Red Woman want with you?

GENDRY
She wanted my blood for some kind of spell.

ARYA
Why your blood?

GENDRY
I'm Robert Baratheon's bastard.

Arya is a little surprised. However, she doesn't really care.

GENDRY
I didn't know until she told me. Then she tied me up, stripped me down, put leeches all over me.

ARYA
Was that your first time?

Gendry is a bit confused.

GENDRY
No, yeah, I've never had leeches put all over my cock.

ARYA
Your first time with a woman.

He is surprised by her question. He gets a little nervous and awkward.

GENDRY
What? I... I didn't. I wasn't with her.

ARYA
Were you with other girls before that in King's Landing? Or after?

Gendry stammers and clears his throat, unable to answer her question. He is taken aback by her forwardness.

ARYA
You don't remember?

GENDRY
Yes, I was.

ARYA
One? Two? Twenty?

GENDRY
Well, I didn't keep count

ARYA
Yes, you did.

Gendry takes a deep breath.

GENDRY
Three.

Arya walks closer to him.

ARYA
We're probably going to die soon. I want to know what it's like before that happens.

GENDRY
Arya, I...

She grabs his face and kisses him. He is a bit stiff at first, but then he relaxes.

She pushes him onto a pile of sacks of some sort and then she starts removing her clothes.

Gendry is still a bit confused as to what is happening.

ARYA
I'm not the Red Woman. Take your own bloody pants off.

He does. Then she leans over him and starts kissing him again.

EXT. DAENERYS' CHAMBERS - EVENING

Daenerys is standing in front of the fire in her chamber. She has a lot on her mind. The battle, her dragons, her child and Jon.

The door opens.

Daario enters the room.

Daenerys is surprised by his presence, and honestly, a bit annoyed as well.

DAENERYS
What are you doing here? I don't believe I sent for you?

DAARIO
No you didn't. I'm getting tired of all the soldier crying and complaining about how they're gonna die. Besides...

Daario walks up to her. He cups her face with his hand.

DAARIO
If we're all going to die, there's only one person I'd like to spend my final hours with.

Daenerys puts his hand down and walks away. Daario is a little hurt and a little confused.

DAARIO
Don't tell me this is about that northern lord.

Daenerys looks away and doesn't answer, when in reality, she just gave him her answer.

DAARIO
Really? I'm losing to that? Come on, I've met dwarfs that are taller.

DAENERYS
Still he is ten times the man you'll ever be.

DAARIO
Ouch. That hurt.

He says it in a very silly and sarcastic way.

She removes her white fur coat. Under it she wears a red and purple dress, a much tighter fitting dress. Daario can clearly see her swollen stomach

DAENERYS
I'm carrying his child.

Daario looks at her with a surprised and disappointed expression.

DAARIO
He knows?

DAENERYS
He does.

DAARIO
You love him?

DAENERYS
I do.

Daario is clearly hurt by this. He does love Daenerys. But he is well aware that he isn't the only one. He walks towards the door. Before he walks out, he turns around.

DAARIO
I hope he deserves you, Daenerys Stormborn.

She slightly smiles at him. He leaves the room.

She sits down on her bed. Missandei enters the room. They both look at each other.

Missandei goes and sits beside her. They both know this could be their last night alive.

They hug each other. In this dark hour, Daenerys is grateful that she has a friend like Missandei. She has been by her side since the beginning. And she loves her dearly. She is almost like a sister to her. She is the best friend Daenerys has ever had.

EXT. BIG FIREPLACE ROOM - NIGHT

Brienne, Podrick, Jamie, Tormund, Davos and Tyrion are all sitting around the fireplace.

TYRION
It's strange, isn't it? Almost everyone here's fought the Starks at one time or another. And here we are in their castle, ready to defend it. Together.

JAMIE
At least we'll die with honour.

TYRION
I think we might live.

They all laugh like he said something foolish and impossible.

TYRION
I... I do. How many battles have we survived between us? Ser Davos Seaworth.

He gestures towards Davos.

DAVOS
Survivor of both the Blackwater and the Battle of the Bastards.

DAVOS
All without a shred of combat ability.

Tyrion gestures towards Jamie.

TYRION
Ser Jaime Lannister, fabled hero of the Siege of Pyke.

JAMIE
Fabled loser of the Battle of Whispering Wood.

TYRION
Hear, hear! Ser Brienne of Tarth.
Defeated the Hound in...

Tyrion realises his mistake.

TYRION
Pardon me, Lady Brienne.

TORMUND
She's not a Ser?

He is clearly shocked by this. Tormund turns to Brienne.

TORMUND
You're not a knight?

BRIENNE
Women can't be knights.

TORMUND
Why not?

BRIENNE
Tradition.

TORMUND
Fuck tradition.

BRIENNE
I don't even want to be a knight.

Jamie stands up and pours himself another drink.

TOMRUND
I'm no king. But if I were, I'd knight you 10 times over.

Brienne is again, a bit disgusted by Tormund, like she always is. Suddenly Jamie gets and idea. He turns around.

JAMIE
You don't need a king. Any knight can make another knight. I'll prove it.

Jamie walks over to the middle of the room. He pulls out his sword and points it to the ground.

JAMIE
Kneel, Lady Brienne.

Brienne doesn't move. She thinks it's sort of a bad joke.

JAMIE
Do you want to be a knight or not?

She looks at him and realises that he is serious.

JAMIE
Kneel.

Brienne stands up. She walks to Jamie and kneels in front of him. He places the sword on her left shoulder.

JAMIE
In the name of the Warrior, I charge you to be brave.

He moves the sword to her right shoulder.

JAMIE
In the name of the Father, I charge you to be just.

He moves the sword back to her left shoulder.

JAMIE
In the name of the Mother, I charge you to defend the innocent.

He removes the sword.

JAMIE
Arise, Brienne of Tarth, a knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Brienne stands up. Everyone claps. Jamie returns to his seat.

TYRION
Ser Brienne of Tarth! Knight of the Seven Kingdoms!

Brienne has the biggest smile on her face. And her eyes fill with tears. In this moment, she is truly, truly happy.

EXT. THE COURTYARD OF WINNTERFELL - DAY

Sam walks down the stairs with Heartsbane in his hands. On his way down he spots Jorah speaking to Lyanna.

JORAH
We have all we need to win this war.

LYANNA MORMONT
I have trained my men, women and children. I have fought before. I can fight again.

JORAH
Please, listen to me. You're the future of our house.

LYANNA MORMONT
I don't need you to remind me of that.

JORAH
You'll be safer in the great hall. These things we're fighting...

LYANNA MORMONT
I will not hide. I pledged to fight for the North, and I will fight.

Jorah notices Sam standing behind Lyanna. She turns around and sees him as well.

SAM
Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to...

LYANNA MORMONT
It's all right.

She turns to Jorah.

LYANNA MORMONT
We're done here.

Lyanna starts walking away, then she turns around to Jorah.

LYANNA MORMONT
I wish you good fortune, cousin.

Jorah smiles at her. Lyanna almost smiles at him.

JORAH
Thank you, my lady.

Lyanna walks away. Sam walks up to Jorah. Jorah notices the sword in Sam's hands.

JORAH
What have you got there?

SAM
It's called Heartsbane. It's my family sword.

JORAH
You still have a family.

SAM
Yes. And I'd love to defend them with it. But I can't really hold it upright.

Sam pauses and looks at Jorah.

SAM
Your father, he taught me how to be a man. How to do what's right. This is right.

Sam gives Jorah the sword. Jorah pulls it out and looks at it.

SAM
It's Valyrian steel. I'd be honoured if you'd take it.

JORAH
I'll wield it in his memory to guard the realms of men.

SAM
I'll see you when it's through.

Sam walks away, then he suddenly stops and looks at Jorah.

SAM
I hope we win.

Jorah nods at Sam and then Sam walks away. Jorah looks down at the sword once again.

EXT. BIG FIREPLACE ROOM - NIGHT

Brienne and the others are sitting around the fireplace again.

BRIENNE
We'd better get some rest.

TYRION
No, let's stay a bit longer.

DAVOS
We're out of wine.

TYRION
How about a song? One of you must know one.

He glances at Davos.

TYRION
Ser Davos?

DAVOS
You'll pray for a quick death.

They laugh. Tyrion looks at Brienne.

TYRION
Ser Brienne?

Brienne shakes her head.

Tyrion glances at Tormund, who determinatively shakes his head. Just when Tyrion had given up hope about hearing a song.

PODRICK
High in the halls Of the kings who are gone Jenny would dance with her ghosts. The ones she had lost and the ones she had found. And the ones who had loved her the most.

As Podrick sings, everyone in Winterfell is shown. The unsullied preparing for battle

PODRICK (VOICEOVER)
The ones who'd been gone For so very long, she couldn't remember their names.

Sansa and Theon are shown in the courtyard, eating together. Sansa looks at him with a soft expression.

PODRICK (VOICEOVER)
They spun her around on the damp old stones. Spun away all her sorrow and pain.

Arya is show lying beside Gendry. He is sleeping. She is looking into the distance.

Sam is lying in bed with Gilly and little Sam.

PODRICK (VOICEOVER)
And she never wanted to leave. Never wanted to leave.

Daenerys and Missandei are shown. They are both worried about the battle. You can tell by the look on their faces.

PODRICK (VOICEOVER)
Never wanted to leave. Never wanted to leave.

All these different characters are shown. And they're all thinking the same thing. We're fucked.

PODRICK (VOICEOVER)
Never wanted to leave. Never wanted to leave.

The horns are blown. Someone is approaching Winterfell. Everyone hears them. Dany, Jon, Arya, Brienne, Jamie, Tyrion. Everyone.

Tyrion, Jon and Dany are seen walking onto the walls of Winterfell.

They look out at the field.

Jon and Dany look at each other. They nod and then they walk away.

Tyrion stays there and looks over the edge. He has a worried look on his face.

The armies are walking to their positions. Jorah rides to the field and stares into the distance. It's so dark, you can barely see anything.

Not too far away from Winterfell, the hoof of a horse is shown. But not just any horse. A dead horse.

The dead are here.
