41 The Monkey
By the time we finally got back to camp, the sky was pitch black. There was neat camp fire set up and food was piled in the 'salad bowl'. Yumi offered to keep an eye on Stainless Steel and let Silk rest for a bit. But Charlotte was nowhere to be seen. Then all of a sudden a voice form the jungle called out:
"Ling!" Charlotte emerged with hugging something towards her chest.
"What have you got there?" I asked.
"A basket!" she held the object in my view. The basket was about the size of my hand but it took both of Charlotte hands to cup it. The basket was made of twigs and it was surprisingly held together. Perhaps she could be some use after all.
"For once you did something useful."
"Thanks! Wait...what do you mean doing something useful for once?"
"Oh, please madam. I am sure you've done a lot more useful things."
"Don't call me madam! I am Lady Charlotte Marina Aquitaine Acott! And I demand you to pronounce my title properly."
"Alright, my lady...would you like me to give you a new title?"
"No!" Charlotte exclaimed.
"Alright your new title is going to be Ms. Fancy Pants?"
"NO!" she complained even louder.
"Well you still haven't put away that ridiculous dress of yours...." Woops, I probably went too far there. Her cheeks were becoming .
"Ok, I meant fancy alright! I mean it's cute!" Charlotte froze, and I just realized what I said. Our faces took on a rosy glow. Charlotte's seemed to light the camp.
"Well, let's just..." I turned around, trying to avoid eye contact and I was frantically scratching my head.
"Say it again." Charlotte said with a small voice.
"What?"
"NEVER MIND FORGET ABOUT IT YOU MORON!" She stomped away. All I could do was watch her leave.
"That was kind of interesting." Silk said. She was sitting on a branch of a high tree.
"You know it's a bad habit to pry into other people's private business right?"
"Are you saying this to a master thief?"
"I suppose I am the one making no sense now." to turn around and leave.
"Making sense? As in logic?" Silk asked. A thud sounded beside me.
"Logic eh...I don't know. Things going on in my life right now doesn't even make any sense. I guess I got nothing to compare to logic."
"But whatever happens, you will always have me." She smiled giving herself an opportunity to hook my arm in hers.
"I am very glad to hear that, my friend." I said as I carefully unhooked my arm.
"Friend!..." Silk said a with a heart aching voice and stepped back in shock really dramatically. And begin to cry, real tears. Darn, she was a good actor. I thought.
"Silk tears won't work with me here. Though I have to admit you can defiantly make it through the auditions for soap operas."
"Really?" She stopped acting and resumed her normal voice again.
"Definitely." I said as she followed me back to the camp fire.
I seated myself on a log that could only sit person. And Charlotte and Silk sat together on the opposite side. Charlotte was looking down not muttering a single word and Silk turned around to her and asked:
"What's wrong?" Silk asked stroking the back of Charlotte hair at the same time.
"No..ooo..th..innn.ggg." Charlotte answered with a stuttering voice. Yumi returned and seated herself around the circle.
"What were all of you talking about?" Yumi asked.
"Really nothing. Should we get dinner started?" I replied.
"Oui!" Silk shouted clasping her hands together.
"Hai." Yumi agreed.
"Of course!" Charlotte yelled.
"Dinner it is." I said as I gathered the ingredients. Being a vegetarian is killing me, I thought.
The next day around noon
"I hope you caught something big, because being vegetarian is driving me nuts." I said following Silk.
"We'll see." She said as we walked a little longer in silence. Then all of a sudden she dive on the ground and motioned for me to lie beside her. Knowing better then to argue I just obeyed.
"Shhh..." she put a finger against her lips.
"What is it?" I asked in a quiet voice.
"We definitely caught something. Look up." She pointed upwards at the treetop and my gaze followed.
Something was certainly caught in the net, but leaves were caught with it too so I couldn't get a clear view of the catch. The net kept on swinging back and forth vigorously and occasionally there was a feral howl.
"A net trap, impressive." I muttered.
"Thank you Cherie! Oh I almost forgot to mention that there is also the trip wire ahead that will trip any animals running too fast, and there are a couple holes there meant to trap any animals walking over it."
"Oh." I suddenly became aware of my surroundings.
"Shall we examine our catch?" She flashed a smile at me.
"I don't see why not." I shrugged.
Silk walked over to a certain tree, pulled a certain vine, and begin to slowly lower the trap and whatever contained to the ground like it was baby. All of a sudden it became motionless and it became all quiet too.
"Something is wrong." I said.
"Trust me I done this many times. Nothing could go wrong." She said with absolute confidence.
"I hope you are right." I said as we approached the target cautiously. Finally the target was within arm reach.
"Let me do the honors." I said as I lifted the net.
Under the net lied a brown monkey curled up into a ball. And it was less then three feet tall Silk and I looked at each other.
"Silk what did you use for bait?" I asked.
"Fruit, but I put some of my perfume on It."
"Because the thing is, I am not eating a monkey."
"Why do you sound like Charlotte all of a sudden?"
"Doesn't matter, it just seems...too intriguing if you know what I mean."
"No, I don't know what you mean." Silk said holding a vine whip in one hand. The other hand going for the monkey. But before she could get a grip on the monkey, the monkey rolled on all fours and let out an ear piercing scream.
"What the..." I said with both hands clasped against my ears.
"You little..." Silk held up the monkey with one hand and looked like she was choking it. I scanned the area for danger. I was sure something was wrong. Monkeys in trios...no groups begin to gather above the tree branches. They begin shrieking and baring their fangs at us.
"Silk..."
"Give me a moment to choke this little..."
"SILK! Look up." I yelled with alarm, which finally got her attention.
"Oh..." she dropped the monkey, who frantically scarpered on the ground before returning to the tree tops along with his gang.
"I've never seen anything like this, we should skedaddle." Silk said.
"Definitely." I said and the two of us turned around and ran like it was the end of the world. And it would be if we got caught by the thousand screaming monkeys.
"We lose them yet?" I asked, not even daring to turn around.
"No, the camp is not far away from here..."
"We've got to warn them." I said retracing the route to the camp in my mind. I made a course correction and ran back to camp.
"Ling!" Silk yelled. As she made a sharp turn to catch up to me.
