14 Armies of Clay
Even though I'd seen it thousands of times online I was struck dumb by the sheer majesty of the scene before me.
"This is magnificent!" Charlotte's eyes gleamed with enthusiasm and I nodded in agreement.
"Excavation site 1 is the largest store of Terracotta warriors. They stood in rows upon rows and what was truly magnificent was how each and every statue looked unique. It was said that the potters who made the terracotta warriors used the face of the potter sitting across from him as blueprint to make the terracotta warrior's face."
"Are you trying to educate me?" demanded Charlotte sounding genuinely offended.
"Just some research I did yesterday. And don't lean over the railing. Ma'am." I said sparing a glance in her direction.
"I have better things to do than looking at boring statues," she said making an arrogant retreat.
I looked at the clay warriors one more time before I turned around and followed up with Charlotte in a couple of strides.
"So why did you bring me to this boring place?"
"Well who's the one that pleaded me to take her outside?"
"Be quiet commoner," she said with an edge to her voice.
I shrugged off the word.
"At once tell why I am wasting time in this place?" she said.
"Looking for clues, ma'am."
"Oh really? Because all I've seen you do in the past hour is stare at those statues," she said taunting.
"I was thinking about the possibilities."
"So, do you know where the relic is?" she asked with the slightest hint of challenge.
"Not really, but I have a few theories."
"Theories? They are just about as good as guess."
"That doesn't sound like you." I said eying her.
"My father said that, and it is true." I would have pointed out the errors in her words, but I decided it was best not to challenge her father words. So instead I came up with something else.
"How noble, I guess it runs in your family."
She faltered for a moment and got into her thinking position. I pressed my momentary advantage and walked ahead of her. Moments later I heard her say: "of course! And wait! Who gave you permission to walk ahead of me?"
I heard a few rapid footsteps seconds later she was in front of me again.
"Please don't run inside the exhibit. Ma'am."
"Fine. When will we leave?"
"As soon as you can shut your mouth up and give me some time to search for clues."
"How rude."
"As you say, ma'am."
"Stop it with the ma'am already! Call me my lady!" Charlotte stomped her feet furiously, not once but multiple times.
"I would, if you stop trying to embarrass yourself." Right now I felt every eyes in the exhibit is following us.
"You are so intolerable!" Charlotte said, her face turning red. At least she stopped stomping.
"I think it fits you better." I continued walking, not sparing her a glance.
"You will look at me when you speak to me!"
"But how can I look at you when you're not even looking at me?" I asked. I entered the Artifact Isle, which was lined with single terracotta warriors and other wonders. Then I started reading their information on the dashboard.
"I suppose you're right... no wait, you shall show me respect commoner or else you will face the consequences!"
"Argument makes a person look bad, especially if the person is a noble or princess argument with a commoner will look even worse."
This time she lowered her voice to a stage whisper so people around us could hear.
"You will be sorry when we go home."
"Home? What home?"
"I meant the hotel you imbecile!"
"Not very noble words, huh princess?" I said absorbing artifact information one after another, not sparing her a single glance.
"I am leaving." She said with impatience.
"Take your time." I replied. Completely unaware my current status is like standing beside Time bomb that can go of anytime.
"FFFFFINE! What is it you want?" that was the last thing I heard before I went deaf for a few seconds.
I turned to face her and could see that her lips are moving but I couldn't make out any words. Slowly I could hear a faint voice, then much louder. Until I realized she was shouting.
"Did you not hear what I said?" she asked.
"Should I thank you for making me almost deaf." I could still hear echoes bouncing in my head.
"Do I have to repeat it?" she sighed deeply and dramatically.
"I will go anywhere besides this boring place."
I considered her offer for a moment and said:
"Sure. I wished you made me deaf, that way I don't have to hear about your endless pestering."
"How dare yo-!"
Before she could finish I cut her off. "With all this time I could have found the clue already. And if you keep on ranting about your nobleness, we're going to be stuck here forever. Ma'am."
She shut up. Thank God.
"This is the same place! It's just much hotter!" Charlotte moved forward as Braun followed in uniform motion while shading her under an umbrella.
"Emperor Qin's burial is the world's largest Tumulus. Rumor is beneath the hill, lies his actual tomb so large it would dwarf Excavation site one."
"Stop...trying... to...educate...me." Charlotte said tiredly this time. Here we go again, you plug one crack in the dam and two more appear. Even though the heat is close to unbearable but the amount of people make it worse as we barely manage to slip through the crowd and buy a drink. Then we sat under the shade and I emptied 2 bottles before I felt any water touched my throat.
"It was never...this hot in England." Charlotte voice was light close to being incomprehensible. She emptied her second drink. Despite all the negative effects the heat brought, I had to thank it for making Charlotte's throat dry. Now she didn't have the breath to say anything. After drinking 4 bottles I felt reborn, I straight up and walked over to the steps of the hill.
"Where are you going?" she stood up followed by Braun. Poor Braun I had forgotten about his existence the moment the trip began. His face looked like a sponge with all the water sapped out.
"My lady..." his voice sound like a thousand year old mummy.
"Ekk! What happened to your voice?" Charlotte even jumped back a little.
"Just a little dehydration...but I can stay for duty."
"Braun you are relieved of your duty today."
"My lady...I can't leave you alone."
"No worries. I still have him." Her face reddened when she glanced in my direction.
"But'..."
"No buts. You will go back to the hotel, that's an order."
"Yes my lady." He didn't argue further, though he did give me once of those looks. Then he limped away.
"So where are we going?" Charlotte turned to face me, arms crossed.
"Let's head for the top of this hill."
"Why?"
"They sell ice cream up there." I find seven year old things tend to grab her attention, so it was a worth a try.
"Then what are we waiting for...wait how do you know they sell ice cream up there?"
"I can smell it." Which was obviously a lie.
"Well I don't smell it."
"Trust me."
She starred at me for a moment and said: "Fine."
"Race ya." I said as I got a 3 steps head start.
"No fair wait up!"
I regret racing to the hill top. I was dehydrated and hot again upon reaching the top.
Charlotte came a few second afterwards, she was breathing hard and was scanning the surroundings then said: "I don't see...anyone selling ice cream... you lied to me commoner!"
"My bad...the ice cream stand must be on the other side of the hill."
"I won't believe you again!" She said as she started throwing a five year old tantrum, which I ignored plainly.
"I need to make sure of something." Right ahead of me lay a huge dark stele, 10 ft. tall, marked with Chinese letters most I don't recognize. There was a fence in front of it and below was an information dashboard.
"Above the Emperor..." I murmured.
"Ling it's impolite to whisper." Came Charlotte voice, which I ignored as usual.
"Kept with his most trusted man..." I looked around and saw a pair of terracotta warriors standing beside the Steele. Something seemed odd about it... it looked like it had been moved. The hint above and placed not metaphorically, but literally. And the clue was given to the most trusted man to keep and the most trustable man is a dead one. If it were an alive one it would have to be your right hand man. So it meant the relic was on some part of the right hand terracotta warrior.
"Now you are really creeping me out. " Charlotte's voice came again.
"Good news you can go home now."
"Really? No wait, why are you acting like this? And what are you smiling about?"
"Forget about it, let's go get some ice-cream."
