Chapter 31 ~ Keefe and Sophie
Hi! I haven't updated in a month now. I'm super sorry for that. For all of you still sticking with me, I appreciate it so so much. Thank you guys. Well . . . Enjoy!
Keefe POV:
Keefe and Biana sneaked up behind Lord Cassius and watched him open the letter and put it on the table. He opened it and started reading out loud to himself.
"Dear beloved husband,
I still have many plans for you and my son; Keefe. But I do know one thing for sure, you will be more important to me than Keefe ever was and will be. Keefe will never answer any of my questions and help me find any answer but I know you will.
I know you know a lot about the Black Swan, tell me! Write back to me about what you know. If you don't I'll come and threaten you to tell me. I do know that you don't want to be just a "Daddy Dearest" and you want to be something more.
Come help me and join my side.
Love,
Your one and only loving wife, Lady Gisela!"
Keefe flinged hard after hearing what was said in the letter. Biana clung onto him tightly.
"We should leave." Keefe whispered, without his dad hearing him. Biana squeezed his hand hard in reply.
"Why the heck am I supposed to open the door? Doesn't that dumb old lady know that I'm the only one here and no one else comes here ever?" Lord Cassius asked himself. He flung open the door quickly and stood a few feet away laughing like a maniac.
Keefe froze. He had never seen his dad laugh. Ever. Never in his whole life had Keefe seen his dad laugh and yet when Keefe was invisible he was laughing like a maniac. Keefe only remembered to breathe when Biana shook him hard and yanked him out the door.
After a few moments of breathing hard, Keefe heard the door slam shut. Biana and Keefe turned visible again and walked in awkward silence after hearing the letter being read out by his "Daddy Dearest". They walked until they reached the place Sophie told them to meet at.
"They're back!" Linh said.
"Keefe! Biana! You're back!" Sophie said in joy. When neither of them responded her smile melted. Keefe couldn't help thinking that Foster looked cute when she worried.
"What happened?" Ruy asked in a gentle, understanding way. A worried look on his face. It seemed so brotherly, Keefe had to give Ruy at least some credit.
Sophie looked super shocked too, "How are you so gentle to Keefe and not to me?"
"I've been through it all. When I first joined the Neverseen, everyone asked me if I had parents. In school I got bullied and teased for it. I never really did stop getting asked those types of questions but I've learned to ignore everything." Ruy said, like everything he said was totally normal.
Sophie gave him a weird look and turned to Keefe. "What happened? Biana? Keefe? Answer me!"
"Tell us what happened?" Tam said.
Ruy gave Sophie a "shush, I know what i'm doing" look. "Keefe, I know it. I share the feeling in a different way. Tell me, what happened and how you feel."
When Keefe didn't answer, Ruy motioned everyone to move away. "Keefe, speak to me. Just to me."
"I- I-" Keefe started, he turned and saw Foster looking at him with a small smile. "I- My daddy dearest read the letter and it said that mommy dearest wants him to help the Neverseen and tell them information about the black Swan."
"That's not only what I asked for." Ruy whispered slowly.
Keefe looked away. He wasn't so sure how Ruy was so good at this but with Ruy speaking came to him easily. "My mom said my dad was more important than me and that she knew he didn't wan't to be just a dumb old "Daddy Dearest"."
Ruy nodded, motioning everyone else to join them again.
Sophie stepped closer to him and whispered, "Biana told us what happened. I'm here."
"I know.'' Keefe replied without looking at her. Sophie stepped away.
"I think we should all take a break." Linh suggested, looking at them tiredly.
Sophie looked about ready to agree with anything, " Alright!"
Linh and Tam leaped away immediately after saying their goodbyes to everyone. Dex leaped away right after. Livvy and Elwin, who were very quiet, finally spoke up.
"Ruy, we'll need to finish checking you one last time. Keefe, come with us." Elwin and Livvy said at the same time.
"I'm coming too," Sophie said quickly. Keefe was glad for her company. The Foster who he knew would never leave him alone. Keefe had to smile.
"Let's go." he said.
They linked hands and leaped back to the healing center.
. . .
"Keefe?" Sophie asked.
"What Foster?" he asked back.
Sophie sighed, "Tell me exactly what the letter said. All Biana told us was that it said you weren't worth enough as your dad."
"It doesn matter what the letter said." Keefe said, blankly. All he would get was sympathy which he really didn't need.
"It matters a lot to me!" Sophie insisted.
"No, it doesn't matter." Keefe said.
"Keefe, I asked you because I want to know. I wouldn't ask if I didn't want to know." Sophie gave Keefe a pointed look.
"I know you, Foster. There's always a reason for what you do." Keefe said, smiling slightly.
"Keefe!" Sophie glared.
His smile dropped. "Fine."
Sophie looked away and nodded.
"It said daddy dearest was worth more than me and that daddy dearest had to write back to mommy dearest about everything he knew about the blackswan." the broken boy said.
"And?" Sophie asked. He sighed, Foster knew him so well.
"She also said that she knew daddy dearest wasn't the only thing he wanted to be and he wanted to be something more worthy." Of course Keefe wasn't worthy of anything. He was just a dumb boy compared to the rest of the world. Especially next to Foster, the best elf, Keefe felt like a disappointment.
Sophie stood stiff, "Keefe. You're the best, he's not. That's why he wants to be something more worthy, it's not because you are his son."
"No point in lying." Keefe said, plainly. There was totally no point, the truth was in perfect sight.
Sophie shook her head, "Actually, I'm not lying. The Keefe I know is awesome. The Keefe he knows is awesome too but he just can't see it because he's blind."
"You know that's not true." As much as Keefe liked that speech, he couldn't believe it. He was never an awesome person.
"I do know it's true!"
"No, it's not!"
"Yes!"
"No!"
"Yes!"
Keefe huffed. "It's not true, Foster! Don't go saying lies about a such a dumb person while there are many other fabulous people."
"I know one amazing, fabulous, awesome person. You." Sophie said, pointing at him.
"Thank you, thank you." Keefe said sarcastically.
Sophie didn't smile, "I meant it, Keefe."
"Stop it, you two!" Ruy said, walking over towards them after finishing his lengthy check up which took until the afternoon. "You both have been arguing and talking over stupid things for a while now."
Sophie shrugged merely. "He won't listen."
"Hey!" Keefe exclaimed. "What if I say that you won't listen?"
"Shush children." Ruy chided.
Sophie glared hard, "Shut it, now!"
At the same time Keefe said, "We are not children!"
"Good, at least you two children are not arguing anymore." Ruy exclaimed happily.
"I said, shut it." Sophie said loudly.
"Ruy, we are not children." Keefe remarked. Ruy was getting on his nerves.
"Totally not children!" Ruy pretended to think. "Maybe you both are toddlers?"
"Ruy!" Sophie groaned.
"I'm trying to get you guys to stop arguing!" Ruy proclaimed.
Sophie glared at Keefe, "If it weren't for you. . . "
Before Sophie could finish her sentence completely Elwin and Livvy burst into the room.
"Ruy, you're all good!" Livvy announced. "No more you need to do."
Sophie grinned as she fist bumped Ruy.
"Keefe, we need to check you up real quick so if you could come with us." Elwin said awkwardly. Keefe got up quickly and walked out of the room following Elwin.
Sophie POV:
"Where are you going to stay?" Sophie asked Ruy. He was now free to go live anywhere he wanted. Sophie wanted to give him a choice and didn't want to force him to stay with her.
"With you?" Ruy raised an eyebrow.
Sophie nodded. She was really happy on the inside, "I guess so." She didn't know what her parents would think about it but she knew they'd agree.
"Sure," Ruy agreed.
"Alright. It's settled." Sophie said.
"Elwin! Livvy! Keefe! Ruy and I need to set up new his room, we'll see you later!" Sophie called as they glittered off to Ruy's new home. Or Sophie's forever amazing old home.
. . .
"Mom! Dad!" Sophie shouted, running into her house in Havenfield. It felt like she wasn't home in years.
"Sweetheart, you're back!" Edaline shouted back, racing to hug her daughter tight. "And look at you being Sophie's brother." Her mom ruffled his hair.
"Look who's back!" Grady teased, walking towards his daughter.
"I missed you guys!" Sophie exclaimed. Her parents wrapped her in a hug. Ruy stood awkwardly at the side.
"Ruy! You're literally family! Come on in." Edaline gently pulled him into the hug.
Sophie was glad Ruy finally fit and was loved.
"Alright, alright! I bet you two have some cleaning up to do. I'll help you get to work." her mom said.
Sophie smiled. Her mom knew her well. "Mom, can Ruy have Jolie's room?"
"I'll warn you that there's a lot of stuff in there but go ahead and use it all you want." Edaline smiled widely and gave Sophie a reassuring squeeze.
"Thank you so much, mom!" Sophie linked elbows with Ruy and pulled him up to the second floor where Jolie's room was located.
"Oh, wow!" Ruy and Sophie gasped. The whole room was filled with so much stuff, Sophie barely had space to move.
"Well, let's get this started." Sophie said enthusiastically.
"So much work!" Ruy whined.
Sophie pretended to think, "We can do this!"
"Sure," Ruy groaned.
. . .
In a few hours Sophie and Ruy were exhausted. They had cleared every single thing from the room to one of Grady's storage closets.
"We finished!" Sophie grinned, holding her hand up for a high five.
"Um. . . Sophie? We have to put stuff in it!" Ruy said, not high fiving Sophie back.
"Oh, right. I forgot." Sophie said, awkwardly pulling her hand back.
"I'm sorry but this is too much for one day." Ruy protested, when Sophie tried pulling him to do more work.
Sophie frowned, "But Ruy, we need to finish your room so that you can sleep there tonight!"
"Sophie! It's nine! We can do this tomorrow." Ruy insisted.
"Now."
"Tomorrow."
"Now."
"Tomorrow."
"Now."
"Tomorrow."
"Woah, calm down in here." Grady said, stepping into the room. "What is the problem?"
"Sophie keeps saying that we should start putting things into my new room now, I don't want to." Ruy complained to Grady.
Grady looked back and forth between the two. "Since you both are siblings, I don't think I should choose one over the other to agree with."
They both looked at each other and then at Grady intensely.
"Well, I do choose one over the other right now." Grady looked at Sophie.
"Ha!" Sophie cried.
Ruy slumped, "Please, no more work."
"More work for you." Sophie said.
"We both can help you guys." Edaline said, joining them.
"That would be great." Ruy said.
"Ruy, you are still doing something."
"Am not!"
"Yes, you are."
"No."
"Yes."
Grady started to complain, "Quit it, I don't know how to handle this yet."
"I always wondered what it would be like for Sophie to have a sibling." Edaline grinned.
Grady sighed, "Well, I don't like this sibling thing."
Edaline gave Grady a look, "I know why you don't like this. Its because you aren't the only one now who can torture poor Sophie about . . . boys."
