Survival
A dull humming reverberated within my skull. Everything was still dark on my eyes, yet I could faintly hear murmurs in the distance. Darkness clouded my vision as I gladly crept back to my peaceful state of oblivion.
"He's still out." I heard someone say.
" His vital signs are normal." Another voice was heard." He did take a serious hit in the head."
"But he'll come around, right?" The first voice asked, hesitantly.
" Let's hope so."
I slowly opened my eyes. Little dots of black and white danced in my vision. Everything looked blurry as I fought the temptation to lie back again.
"Urgh!"
I heard a gasp and someone leant over me. " He's awake." She said, surprise clearly laced in her voice.
No kidding, I thought as my eyes went down to my hand. I saw an IV attached to a plastic bag above my head. Blinking twice, my vision cleared a little as I saw someone gazing intently at me.
"Where am I ?" I croaked.
Not answering, she took my hand to feel my pulse, and attached another IV. I let her work without a question.
Finishing up, she looked at me with a smile. "You're holding up much better than I thought. You're sturdier than you look."
"At least I made it, right?" We laughed.
" You okay, son?" An elderly man walked over into the room. Judging from the stethoscope around his neck, he looked to be a doctor. Checking me thoroughly and looking at the computer beside me, he nodded." A few more days and you'll be back on your feet."
I thanked him." Where am I now?"
"Somewhere safe."
I tried to remember what happened. Leaving Knowhere. Being ambushed. Crash-landing here.....
Oh my God.
I sat up. "What about my companions? Are they alive?"
Their faces fell immediately, and they shifted uncomfortably trying not to meet my gaze.
"ARE THEY ALIVE?" I shouted.
The heart- monitor beeped frantically. I could see the graph of my heartbeat rising steadily. The doctor and the nurse looked at me in alarm.
" His pulse-rate is going up!" He ran out of the room.
The nurse tried to calm me down, but I was busy shouting and struggling against my restaints.
" WHERE ARE THEY?" I screamed frantically.
Max's POV
When I was smaller, I used to wonder what happened to all those who died.
Did they reach the Gates of Heaven, or rot in the depths of hell? When I was a child, I'd always wanted to solve this mystery.
Who knew that I would get the chance at such a young age?
Last thing I remember was crashing onto the surface of this planet. The Captain tried his best to steer the pod but to no avail. Poor Glen was shot.....
Glen.
My eyes shot open. Looking up, I saw the clear blue sky. The sunlight filtered through the thick canopy of trees. With great difficulty,I turned my head sidewards, to meet the gaze of a pair of yellow eyes.
"Eeek!" It screamed and jumped back.
Not more than three feet in height,it was covered wholly in brown and black fur. It almost resembled a baby bear, except bears don't walk on two legs and hold blasters in their hands.
It screamed again and ran off, probably to warn its mates. Which meant I had to get out of here.
"Urgh!" I slowly got up. A throbbing pain in my chest didn't help. Not to mention my totally bruised and cut body.
I stood up and analysed my surroundings. I was in a small clearing in a forest. Pieces of metal lay scattered. The forest was dense, but that was my only chance of survival.
No weapons. No Glen. No Captain.
Great.
Using a pocket knife hidden under my trousers, I managed to cut a branch for support. Tredging into the forest, I began my journey.
I kept on walking, occasionally looking back for pursuers. Resting now and again, I made it for almost an hour when I heard a gunshot very close to me.
Shit. I thought as I crouched. If those "bears" found me, it was unlikely I would live. I started to run.
"Eeka shhtra voika!" I heard a shout as I looked back to see twenty or so "bears" pursuing me, all armed. Cursing, I continued to run.
They fired, but missed. I used the thick trees to my advantage.
"Ow!" I cursed as a sudden impulse of pain shot through my leg. Looking down, I saw my left foot bleeding, with red blood flowing in a steady trickle through the wound. Those assholes didn't miss.
Ignoring my pain, I pushed forward desperately. I have to survive.
Shit. They are closing in. Not too much longer. They've almost got me.....
BOOM!
The loudest sound rocked me down to my very bones. The bang was so loud that I'm sure my eardrums were shredded. I got knocked off my feet as the wave of heat and light passed over me.
After it dissipated, I got up slowly. Holding onto a nearby tree for support, I looked back. The very place where the bears were, is now a little clearing, with ash scattered everywhere.
Silently thanking my luck, I strode forward. But I hardly made a few steps when I was stopped by a new voice.
"And where do you think you're going?"
I heard the metallic click of a gun. I slowly turned around.
My eyes moved from the ground, up her body, and to the blaster in her hand pointed straight at me before finally locking on her eyes. They were a dark green, and her clear-cut face was framed by wisps of her auburn hair that fell from her bun. She was, undoubtedly, absolutely beautiful and stunning, and she was fully prepared to kill me.
Question of the chapter: Who is the girl in the end? Is she a friend or a foe?
