Flashback

Three years ago,on Earth

Steve's POV

The evening was starry,full of mystery.The cold wind brazed against my skin as I walked towards the base.My thoughts were lingering on how my future could go,if I could live up to the expectations of so many who were counting on me.

If I was lucky,this would be my last day as a cadet.

Reaching my destination,I made towards the seminar hall,where I had been summoned.

"Hey,Steve.Why looking so glum?"Someone put an arm around me.I didn't have to turn around to see who it was.

"Today's the day,Maz.Today I'll know whether I passed or not."
"Geez,man."Maz smiled."It's so unlike you to be nervous. We all know what they'll say."

I shrugged."What about you?"

"I'll be reporting to the Millennia.".
We fist-bumped.

Reaching the door of the hall,I paused.

"Wish me luck,man."

Maz pulled me into a hug.

"I'm always with you,man. One day,you'll do great. And I'll be the one who will be the most happy for you."

Present situation

I don't know why that memory suddenly sprung up.Whether it was the remains of Yorktown before me,or if it was because of the betrayal of an old friend, I have no clue.My weapon still being aimed at the Commander at my feet,my eyes were glued to Maz,who seemed to enjoy the show of shock and emotion on my face.

"So,what happens now, Steve?"He glared."Your precious planet lies in ruin.Your superiors are dead.Yet,why did you resist?"

I clenched my jaws in anger."Because duty calls to me.Do you even realize what you've done?"
He raised an eyebrow."Let me think.I joined a superior force,helped them destroy the Nova Corps,captured you,and soon am going to be extremely rich and powerful."He smiled."How does that sound?"

The cheerful expression on his face was replaced by a serious one."Don't you realize what this is, Steve?Has peace made you so blind that you're oblivious to the signs around you?Has victory crippled you so much?THIS IS WAR!"
"For years we've tolerated the rule of the Novas.They are ignorant,foolish,scared.But no more.Since today,we all STRIKE BACK!!"

A cheer went up among the Klingons.A drop of sweat dropped from my brow.We have to escape from this madman.

Now's the time.

I looked at Maz with a steely expression."In your dreams,traitor."

"Now!!"I screamed.

Just as I'd expected,the engines of my ship roared to life.Jumping back,I fired at the guards near my crew.They fell,and their weapons appeared at the hands of my crew.

"DIE, Klingons!"Max screamed from the ship.Entering the ship's turret system,he fired at the guards surrounding us,while we dashed towards the Jackal, occasionally firing back to keep them at bay.

As soon as the last of my crew entered the ship,I strode towards the controls."We need to go now!"
"On it,sir!"

Some of the Klingons who managed to take cover,started firing back.Instructing Max to handle them,I turned the ship towards the door.

"Fire at the door!"I screamed.
A volley of tropedoes blasted against the door.As soon as it fell,I powered the engines straight towards the exit.

The engine were revved to full power.Screeching as I heard the clang of metal and the sound of blasters against my ship,we shot out as fast as a bullet when fired from a gun."Warp us out of here!"

It wouldn't take them long to retaliate.But we are out of their reach now, traveling at light speed straight towards anywhere away from them.

"Sir,we are out of their reach."Max called out."Where are we headed to now?"

I leaned back in my seat,heaving a sigh of relief."Head towards the nearest Nova base."

"Mars then."

I looked up,my thoughts heavy and muddled.Maz would keep his word,I'm sure,and that means trouble for not only us,but for every living being.I looked out into space.

It was dark and starry,as we sped off,towards a bleak future.

Finally.I had been trying to update from yesterday.I wanted to include the flashback to show a little piece of Steve and Maz's friendship.I hope you like the chapter.
