What Should Have Been
Sam did as Rose asked him, he took a lot of pictures. After lunch of course, all three of them ran to the playground like kids, and swung on the swings, tried the monkey bars, made faces at each other from the top of the jungle gym. Sam got pictures of Rose, pictures of Dean, pictures of them together. Rose took a couple pictures of him.
They ran around without their shoes in the grass, Dean took a picture of Rose riding on Sam's shoulders smiling and laughing. He also took a picture of her falling off of Sam, and pulling him down with her. Rose climbed up a tree, and took a picture of the boys from the top.
They spent the whole day acting like a bunch of teenagers. Far off and out of sight, Gabriel watched and knew he did his job correctly. None of those kids ever got to be happy normal teenagers, and even though they are all adults he was happy they got to be 16 years old and happy for once in their lives. Gabriel took a few pictures of his own, that he would later slip into the collection, with all three of them happy and smiling and laughing like goof balls.
Sam's favorite picture was one where Dean and Rose were sitting against the tree together. Rose sitting in his lap leaning against his brother, both of them smiling looking so normal and so happy. He took that picture three different times, to be sure the moment would be saved forever.
As the sun set, Sam drove off to pick up some more food. This was it, no Sam, time to fix everything. Dean and Rose sat on top of the table, watching the last bits of light disappear from the sky.
"Remember last time this happened Rosie?" Dean started.
"Yeah, that was a good day. But I think the redo of today was a million times better," she said, leaning back little more into his chest.
"I bet I can make it 10 million times better," he said, raising his head up a little.
"Can you now?" she laughed, Dean reached in his pocket and put the blue box in her hands. She looked up at him.
"You didn't?" she asked in disbelief.
"I did, just for you," he replied, kissing her temple. "Go on, open it,"
She delicately lifted the lid, to find the beautiful necklace from so long ago, she smiled remembering the beautiful necklace.
"You remembered this?" She asked in a whisper.
"Of course I did, babe. Never forgot," Dean answered, before pressing his lips onto hers. She kissed him back, knowing that their perfect day just got more perfect.
As they shared their sweet moment, Sam came back with dinner. He mischievously thought about ruining it, but just as he was about to call out to them. A hand clamped down over his mouth, and yanked him away.
The owner of the hand, spun Sam around and pinned him to a tree.
"Shut up Moose. You are not ruining this moment, I have been waiting forever for this," Sam looked at his "kidnapper"
"Balthazar?" Sam asked, flabbergasted.
"Yes, it's me you bloody idiot. Now shut up, this is better than any soap opera ever," he whispered sternly.
"Soap Opera?" Sam asked.
"Oh yeah mate, all of Heaven is watching this. Now shut up, and behave. Because if you destroy this moment, every angel in Heaven will smite your ass," Balthazar said before poofing back up to Heaven.
Not really knowing where to go, Sam went back to the car. As he sat there, he picked up all of the polaroid pictures from all of their adventures and began to flip through them. Laughing at Rose in her 80's get up with her "I absolutely hate you face". Sam looked through all of the pictures again and again, until finally Gabriel poofed into the passenger seat of the car.
"Okay, Sam. You can go cock block them now," he said before disappearing again.
Sam grabbed dinner once again, and went back to the table where Dean securing something around Rose's neck.
"I got dinner," Sam announced.
"Took you long enough," Rose said, climbing off the table. Dean followed, but took a moment to admire how beautiful Rose looked with the necklace on.
When dinner was finished, Rose went to the Impala and brought out the very same blanket she and Dean had laid on. Spread it out in the grass and laid on her back, Sam and Dean joined her. Dean on her right and Sam on her left. But this time she changed something.
Rose reached out on both sides, and took one of their hands. She smiled, as they both intertwined their fingers with hers at the same time, they would never know and that was okay. That was Rose's little piece of joy to remember.
They watched the stars in complete silence, the boys holding one of her hands, but what they didn't know was all the little stars were watching them and smiling back. All of the angels in Heaven, cried in delight. Rose soon drifted off into sleep, Sam followed soon after. But Dean refused to let the moment end so soon, he stayed on his back. He was waiting for something, he was waiting for the shooting star he saw last time. He had a new wish to place on it.
After a time, he saw the little speck of white light turn a bright red and streak across the sky. He smiled wide and wished in his mind, that he might one day pass away peacefully, as an old man, free of hunting and stress. And spend every single day in Heaven as happy as he was today.
