Fear Landscape,
Scarlet's Home,
I looked at the boy in the doorway, and let my mouth turn upwards slightly. He was standing impatiently in the doorway still, looking for an answer. The wind was stronger, because his wavy jet hair was moving quite a lot, as was the material in his maroon hoodie. His brown eyes pierced my gaze, and I beckoned him in. Next to me, Jason was laughing silently, waiting to see how it would play out. I abruptly sat up.
"Hi? I'm Scarlet. Don't you know me? From the ceremony?" I asked.
"Raphael. I'm not a people person. I had a lot more pressing matters to attend too." Raphael replied tersely.
"Oh. Ok. Are you good now?" I sighed.
"I mean, a new Owelen kids' screams are still replaying in my ears, but yeah. I guess. I'd feel a lot better if I could just go to bed." He muttered frustratedly, and then walked past me, into a room I guessed was where he was going to sleep.
I turned to Jason. "What on Earth is his problem? And I thought only Glitzern still did the serum..." I mused. There were four main cities. Glizern, Owelen, Samei and Mareng.
"Well, if that was the case, I wouldn't be here. Raphael would be though. We came in at the same time, two years ago, so we're basically best friends. That's one good thing. You can make friends with other cities," He smiled, and I grinned too. Although it was extremely rare for Glitzern's to have brown eyes like Raphael's, I could see some Glitzern characteristic's. I also thought he looked familiar, and was happy I was correct. "I was from Owelen too. I miss the autumn-y feel. It's too hot here," he smiled sadly.
"Who else takes part?" I asked eagerly. Our world was split into four parts, representing the four seasons. Part of the Peace Programme, after The Last War. I wondered if that too was a lie.
"All of the season cities. Glitzern as Winter, Owelen as Autumn, Samei as Summer, and-"
"Mareng as Spring, I know, I know. What about them?" I interrupted.
"Well, they turned finding the six-six-sixes into a big competition. To see who could find the big, main six-six-six. They named them the Kingfisher Queen. Otherwise known as the end of the seasonal cities, and make everywhere unique, and imperfect, like us. The Kingfisher Queen is a six-six-six, and also a criminal, for being the last of G.E.Ms lineage, or as we call him here, Larry."
"Hold the god damn phone. G.E.M was called Larry?!? And The Kingfisher Queen?" I exclaimed.
"Yup, hilarious right? Going back to his great-great-great-something-kids, nobody's found them yet, but if they were found, they'd be dead. And Queen, yes. A girl, not necessarily in The Fear Landscape though. The topic of the Kingfisher Queen is all pretty hush hush, back in Tamanara."
"Oh... Ok!" I said, acknowledging the fact that the whole world, Tamanara, didn't know about this Queen. "What were you saying about Mareng and co?" I asked, grimacing slightly at the word "Mareng". Although, if Jason noticed, he didn't comment.
"Oh, yeah! Anyway, four sixteen year olds a year. You'll be introduced tomorrow to your group." He paused. "Ugh, it's getting late... How about a story about the Serum? Before we go to bed," Jason suggested.
"Cool!" I smiled, curious to know more.
"OK. You ready?" Jason asked. He called to Raphael and he ambled out. "Want to know more about The Serum?" Jason said to Raphael.
"Fine. Only because it helps me figure out a way out of here." Raphael growled.
"Sure that's the reason. So, they created the fear landscape right? To make soldiers better fighters. Well, a couple of years in, they decided to turn into a trap. Six-six-six, his allies, and family, were all trapped in this very same place! People trusted the Fear Serum, so they continued to use it, without people batting an eyelid, especially since they didn't know it was a trap for six-six-sixes. The Scientists soon modified the serum, making everyone who took it perfect. They didn't question anything, and peace was ensured." He said, using quotation marks around the word peace.
"Unlike your Mum, Scarlet. I definitely remember your Mum. In fact, everybody from Glitzern remembers your Mum. Is that why she was different? Wasn't a mindless creature? Actually interesting to be around!" Raphael asked me. I inwardly smiled, liking him not being so hostile, and introverted.
"Maybe... In fact, she probably knew I was a six-six-six, and that's why she didn't want me to go... Maybe she was a six-six too! And escaped somehow. We should ask around tomorrow!" I mused excitedly.
"Yeah... OK." He replied, smiling slightly at my energetic demeanour.
"Can we get back to the story?" Jason laughed. "It may help you discover more clues!" He saw our nods, and continued.
"Where was I? Oh yeah, perfection. So, these Scientist people had a perfect world, and didn't like the six-six-sixes, who were unique, but not as willing to make a change as The Kingfisher Queen. That's why they trapped us. Because, otherwise we were going to destroy their own, little, perfect world. They've been trapping us for one-hundred-and-sixty years. The End" Jason proclaimed.
"Jason. That was a crappy ending." I exclaimed. I looked at Raphael, and he nodded, a small smile on his face.
"Oh! I'm sorry Miss Scarlet. I will do much better next time. Goodnight. And Scarlet, welcome to The Fear Landscape." Jason chuckled. Seeing him grin, made the corners of my mouth turn upwards slightly, as I realised that if they could survive in here, hell, enjoy themselves here, I could to. As long as I pulled myself out of the deep pit of pity, I could actually live a life! I was laughing and joking with two evil people for goodness sake!
I really wondered if that story was just a legend, with sprinklings of truth, or that was the real reason. And, to be honest, I was more inclined towards the latter.
