26 - Riot

*crashes in*

So sorry for not updating! School got in the way.

Also, random observation: the episode Save the Cat is a pun; it's got the same name as a particular story structure. Took me long enough to figure that out XD

Anyways.

Hope you're all having a great day!

Bow's POV

Glimmer was with her mom, catching her up on everything, while Adora and Catra were dealing with the kids. I was going to offer to help them, but they seemed to be handling the situation remarkably well; Adora hadn't done anything stupid, and Catra was surprisingly calm. I smiled, proud of them.

"Hey, Entrapta," I greeted, joining her in the control room once Catra and Finn left towards the kitchen. "What're you up to?"

"Organizing data," she mumbled.

"Cool," I replied, looking over her shoulder to see what was on her tracker pad. There was a sketch of the planet we recently left—Halfmoon, as Entrapta called it—along with an image of Catra and Melog. Above the drawings was the word evolution.

"What's this all about?" I wondered.

"You wanna hear my theory??"

"Yeah, sure!"

"Well," she started, using her hair to grab my face and pull it closer to her tracker pad. "I'm not 100% sure, but the data I've collected points to the idea that the magicats on Halfmoon share a common ancestor with the creatures that once lived on Krytis."

"So... you're saying that Catra's a descendant of Melog's kind?"

Entrapta shook her head. "It would have taken thousands of years for species to change that drastically."

"Okay... how are they related, then?"

Entrapta pulled up a diagram, showing an upside down V with Melog and Catra at the ends, with a question mark on top of the peak.

"Evolution doesn't happen in a straight line. The original species is called a common ancestor--in regards into the creatures it evolves into--which can develop into multiple different types over time; for all we know, there could be hundreds of different magicat species."

I blinked. "You lost me."

"So basically, Catra and Melog are like cousins?" y/n asked from the doorway. I didn't even realize they were standing there.

"Well, yes... but actually no," Entrapta said. She thought about that for a moment, then shrugged and went back to typing.

"What're you doing up?" I asked y/n, walking over to them.

"What do you mean? Everyone's awake except for Roe."

I laughed. "True. But it is kinda late."

Y/n took out their tiny tracker pad—they called it a phone earlier—from their pocket and turned it on. "It's about 10am back at home. I would normally be in class."

"Wouldn't Roe be awake too, then? If she has the same schedule as you?"

"Nah, that girl can sleep for 24 hours straight. It don't matter what time of day it is; she's always ready to take a nap."

"What're you guys talking about?" Catra asked from behind me. I turned around to see her with Finn on her shoulders.

"Awwwwwwww!" I squealed. "You guys are so cute!!"

"We are not!" both magicats shrieked defensively.

"What's going on?" Roe wondered sleepily, joining us. Adora came up right behind her, baby Mara in her arms.

"Finn's picking up on Catra's bad habits," y/n snickered.

"Which one?" Adora asked with a smirk.

"Adora!" Catra protested.

"The whole 'I'm not cute' thing," I clarified, using finger quotations. "But we all know the truth; the angrier she gets, the cuter she is!"

"Argh!" Catra groaned. "Here, take Finn while I go scream into a pillow."

Glimmer's POV

Some time passed, and the two young magicats were already getting accustomed to living with us. Finn had imprinted on Catra, and she had grown pretty protective of them, which was surprising; I didn't think Catra would be good with kids. Adora was rarely seen without Mara in her arms, and the adorable baby hardly ever cried anymore. She even stayed silent as Darla tumbled into Etheria's atmosphere.

"Huh," Entrapta muttered, after we landed in a not-so-graceful manner. "That didn't go very well."

"Ya think?" Catra said sarcastically, pushing herself back up onto her feet.

"Ooh, look," Roe said, pointing out the window. "Les paparazzis."

People were swarming around the ship; it must have leaked that we had gone to find the former queen of Bright Moon, and everyone wanted to know if the rumors were true.

"I don't think my mom can handle all this," I said, pressing my hand against the glass.

"I'm on it," Bow said, heading for the exit dock. "Catra, come on!"

"What do you need me for?"

Bow motioned towards the crowds.

"We're scaring people away, got it."

"No, that's not--"

"This is gonna be fun!"

I went to help my mom out of her bed, but she couldn't stand on her own. I was too short to give her any support, so Adora and Entrapta held her up. I offered to teleport us, but Entrapta didn't think that was such a good idea given my mom's fragile state. I felt pretty useless as we made our way off the ship, so I went to go join the others. Bow, y/n, and Roe were nicely redirecting the crowd somewhere else, but Catra was straight up yelling at everybody.

"Maybe tone it down a notch?" I suggested, coming up to her.

"Do I have to?"

I crossed my arms and fought the smile tugging at my lips.

"Ugh, fine."

"Wildcat!" Scorpia yelled, running over and crushing the two of us in a hug. "I'm so glad you guys are okay! We were all so worried."

"Uh... why?" Catra asked. "We told you where we were going."

"Well, maybe because it's cuz you almost died, Horde scum," I teased, hands on my hips.

"What?!" Scorpia questioned. "How did that happen?"

"Sparkles! Why would you tell over-protective-hugger-lady that?"

"Catra sacrificed herself for me and the others," I explained, throwing an arm around my friend. "But she survived, obviously. It turns out cats really do have nine lives."

I heard a gasp behind me, and turned to see Finn standing in the doorway of the ship. Their eyes were wide as they took in the setting.

Scorpia squealed. "Who is that adorable thing?"

"That's Finn," Catra explained. "We rescued the two of them from another planet."

"There's two of them?!"

"Yeah, there's a baby—oh frick. Adora! You left Mara on the ship!"

Catra ran back onto Darla to find the little magicat, but Finn jumped on her before she got far. I winced, expecting Catra to get mad, but... she didn't. She laughed and repositioned the little kid so they were resting on her hip.

"Not gonna lie, I'm a little confused," Scorpia said, scratching the back of her head with her claw. "I didn't know you guys were gone long enough for Adora and Catra to have a kid."

I laughed. "Like Catra said, she and Adora rescued them from a planet that was about to be destroyed by the vortex."

"Vortex? Huh, that's funny! We were having a similar experience here."

"What do you mean?"

"Kinda hard to explain, but basically, the world started getting swallowed up by the portal again, even though there wasn't one, but then all the pink stuff went away in one big poof and now life is good again!"

"Glimmer!" Bow called, waving his arms. Once he caught my attention, he pointed over to Adora.

"Give me a sec," I told Scorpia, then I teleported over to Adora. "Something wrong?"

"No, no! I just thought you might want to help your mom get settled down in her room."

"Oh, sure, but don't you guys need help with unpacking Darla?"

"Don't worry about it! We'll take care of everything."

"Okay... you'll park Darla in the vehicle storage room?"

"Yes, definitely," Adora assured me, doing finger guns. "As soon as I figure out where that is. And also, have you seen Entrapta? I kinda lost sight of her about twenty seconds ago."

I shook my head. "I can go look for her—"

"No! Go help your mom. Micah's already in there with her."

Suddenly, something came crashing down through the ceiling behind me. I shrieked and turned around to see a familiar winged horse standing there.

"Did someone say Swift Wind?!"

"Not even close, buddy," Adora said, while I face-palmed. "Okay, I'm gonna go find Entrapta. Byeeeee!"

"Adora!" Catra called, running over. She was holding Mara and had Finn on her shoulders. "You can't leave a baby unattended, you dummy."

"Oh, shoot!" Adora said, her brow furrowing with concern as she took Mara into her arms. "I thought Roe was taking care of her."

"No, she's out with Crop Top preventing a riot."

"Riot?!" I shrieked. "What's going on out there?"

"It's nothing. People are just demanding to see the undead queen or whatever."

"What?! Catra, take the kids to your bedroom. Adora, Swift Wind, come with me."

"For the honor of Grayskull!" Adora shouted, Mara still in on arm. She handed the baby off to Catra, and gave her girlfriend a quick kiss. "This shouldn't take long."
