Hope you like it, please enjoy Chapter 4!!!! Action!
Beyond the bushes and trees laid a silent predator lurking. He was ready to strike. He sighed patiently waiting for the right moment. Today was the day. Truth be told, someone had been watching Drago for a while. He had been tracking his every move, calculating every detail to the last moment. This was an obsession.. Truly it was the only thing he lived for. The day he would crush Drago in his bare hands.
"Two clicks to the north.." he mumbled.
He located his entry and then exit. He carefully observed his surroundings predicting what would be obstacles to a clean escape. His plan had formed with the most exact calculations. Lurking, he awaited till dawn to begin his plan. He knew he was here. He could savior the feeling of having Drago in his hands dying.. begging for his life at his mercy. Everything was going according to plan. He just didn't account for any scalawags... He thought he would be alone.. What changed? He prepared all his things. He was going to kill him anyways.
All he carried was a warn leather satchel full of surprises. On foot he tread lightly as if he were walking on ice. The figure ran through the woods, being undetected by any of Drago's guards protecting the facility. His steps were light, quick and precise. His clothing camouflaged with the scenery around him entering undetected. He crouched and began ever so slowly stopping a few yards away. This area was heavily guarded as it was an entrance to the campsite. The guards conversed between themselves not paying attention to their surroundings.
How would he distract them? Anything would do really, but what would be the least amount of noise.. His fingers touched the cold earth before trailing towards something small and smooth. Pebbles..
"That'll work.."
With the flick of his wrist he skipped a few pebbles to the west near a few bushes. This caught the guards attention. As they directed their attention towards the bushes the man quickly threw a pebble towards a dainty thin branch. With one shot the branch fell beside the two men.
"What in Thors name-"
Before they knew it, it was too late. The man came from behind and attacked them from behind. One was hit from behind and the punched in the face. Both men collapsing to the ground in a matter of seconds. He cautiously observed if anyone had heard anything or come to investigate. No one came. He smirked. But this distraction wasn't enough as he knew that there would be guards waiting in the hallways.
"3..2..1..." he counted before his second distraction hit the campgrounds.
A ruckus began to form with men holding up their weapons and shields.
"A rogue dragon!? Get the Master, hurry!?" A man said before being sideswiped by the dragons tail.
You could tell. This Monstrous Nightmare had gone crazy and did not want to be ordered around. It began breathing fire and destroying the facility and camp. All the guards available went towards the raging fire breathing dragon. The mysterious figure sprinted from out of the bushes. Unfortunately, the original entry point was full of burnt rubble and flames. He had to this, find an entry and stick to the plan. After turning a corner, he spotted a small window.
"Bingo!" He whispered.
As all the guards attention was directed towards the wild, untamed dragon, they didn't notice that he had took the opportunity to sneak through the window near the facility campgrounds. The only problem, with entry being that the window had metal bars. No problem, all there was to do was to improvise. He pulled out a small cylinder out of his warm satchel. These missions could get messy fairly easily. He placed the cylinder in between the grey, metal bars and then he pressed the button. As the cylinder began extending the old rusted bars began bending. He just needed a little more space, a bigger opening. After a few seconds the rusted bars were bent all the way.
He quickly put the retractable instrument back in his satchel and with force pulled out the bars, one by one. He quickly peeked through, no one was there. He sneaked in the window. He fit through just right. If his calculations were correct, then he was in the right place. There was a bookcase, just like he planned. He turned to the bookcase and desk. He began scouring for anything that could be of value. He grabbed a few books and a box and stuffed the contents in his satchel until it was full.
This was Drago's study. He looked for any information that could give insight on Drago's future plans, followers and whereabouts. A picture sat on his desk of a woman and a child. He grasped the picture and slammed it to the ground. Odd.. It seemed as if Drago had not been here at all today. He pressed hear footsteps passing and immediately hid behind the door.
"Secure the prisoners!? " Shear said with a sense of urgency.
"Prisoners?" He questioned.
As the footsteps disappeared, the mysterious figure sighed. He had come to end Drago.. but there were prisoners..
"Do the right thing.." he muttered.
He was so close.. his heart reasoned with his mind. He had to do the right thing. He had to save those prisoners who were suffering. Drago's crimes and bloodshed would catch up to him soon enough.
Peering through the door he began searching for the prison cells. If he remembered correctly it should be just down this hallway. There were many doors.. which is the right door? Once again the echo of footsteps began getting louder and louder. The man began pulling on the handles desperately hoping one of these doors would open. After making it to the last door, he pulled the handle with the door successfully opening. The man quickly entered the room and closed the door just barely escaping the guards passing by. He breathed slowly as the men locked all the doors. When they reached the final door, the man heard how the key locked him in.
"Bloody hell.." he muttered.
With his focus on the unlocking the door with a thin knife, the noises echoed through the room. The man had not noticed what room he had entered. Toothless' ears perked up as the man did his best to pick the lock with no avail. His eyes gleamed with joy as he saw the mysterious figure. Maybe this man could break them out.
Toothless had never seen him before. He attempted to walk to the door but the chains restrained him and bars restrained him. Toothless had to get this man's attention.. Toothless tapped Hiccup's foot but Hiccup didn't respond. Hiccup was so weak that he couldn't say a word. The exhaustion was overwhelming. He hadn't drank or eaten anything in about 6 hours. The man cursed after the thin knife broke off jamming the lock and keyhole.
"There's got to be another way.."
The figure turned around finally noticing the poor dragon locked in a cage. The man sighed, that was not where a beautiful creature like a dragon should be. Toothless looked at him subtly before glancing at Hiccup. Toothless then began growling when he pulled out his sword. He stood in front of Hiccup defensively.
"Stop growling, I am going to help you. A beautiful creature like you shouldn't be behind bars. You won't get hurt, I promise. Stand back. " He said in his muffled voice.
Toothless did as he said. The figure sliced the lock in half with his sword. He opened the cell door. At first he only noticed the dragon. He picked the chain locks and removed them from his paws.
"We have to go." The man said examining the room and it's surroundings.
Toothless pulled on the man's cowl.
"Don't pull that my friend. What has gotten into you?" the man said as he turned around facing the green eyed dragon. Toothless pointed towards the sleeping figure behind him. Toothless nudged him. Hiccup awoke slightly before muttering, " What is it bud?"
Hiccup's eyes widened before trying to punch the man in front of him even with whatever strength he had left.
"Who are you? Don't touch my dragon." Hiccup said alarmingly.
The figure replied in his dark voice, "I'm just passing through. Come with me if you want to survive."
Hiccup furrowed his brows, "How do we know we can trust you?"
"You don't, but you've got a better shot with me than staying here. If your here, your going to be dead meat."
Hiccup exchanged glances with Toothless before nodding. What other choice did they have?
"Ok..we will go with you. But if you betray us-"
"What will you do?" The man asked intrigued as he crossed his arms.
"For a scrawny kid, you have guts."
Hiccup didn't respond before groaning in pain. The figure caught him as he fell to his knees. He examined Hiccup checking for a pulse and touching his forehead.
"You're ill. You need medicine. You're burning up."
The man helped unchained Hiccup and helped him up.
"Can you stand?"
Hiccup barely responded. The reality was that Hiccup was very sick and dying.
"Ok, boy, I need you to plasma blast the wall, so we can get out of here." The figure said commandingly.
Toothless turned to the door as he watched the handle turning slightly.
"The door is jammed!? Is someone in there!?" A guard said slamming his fists on the door.
This was going to be close. Either the guards catch them and they die of torture or they survive and hide in the woods.
"Break the door down!" They heard from the outside.
Toothless lined himself up, and prepared himself to shoot a plasma ball. As the dragon jerked forward, releasing the plasma ball, the wall in front of them turned into rubble. The man ran out first with Toothless following. Hiccup could barely trail them, hobbling all over the place. Drago's thugs heard the blast and were coming from both directions.
"We need time.." the man thought.
"Head straight until into the woods and get as far as you can! I'll catch up to you!" He said helping Hiccup mount on Toothless.
"What about.."
"I'll be right behind you. Don't come back for me, you got that? Go!"
The figure took out his thin sword and prepared to fight. They could not be followed. This would put all of them into jeopardy. Flying away would attract even more attention. They could be caught in a matter of seconds. With a flick of the wrist he positioned his sword defensively as the men struck with fury.
One of the men was the size of giant with bulging muscles and a terrifying glare. He tried to kill the mysterious man from behind with an axe. He heard footsteps as he pushed his other opponent forward and kicked the man behind him. The man from behind sliced the air from behind cutting the figure's arm slightly. The blood hitting the cold air stung. His opponent smirked, "Not so strong now are ya?"
Both men came from both sides. The man jumped doing an open split in the air hitting both men in the face. She then barrel rolled the man to her left and lunged him down the hill. The much bigger man rammed her in between the tree and his body.
"You're a big fella aren't you?"
The man was about to punch him before getting head butted by the figure causing him to step back dizzy. The man then imposed his fist into his face knocking him out. He shook his head slightly to correct his double vision.
"You must be stubborn to have such a thick skull." He remarked.
He then hurried into the woods, closing his retractable blade and holding his shoulder. More men were coming. He threw a few smoke bombs to impair their vision and took to the forest. His lungs were burning and he gasped for air. Sweat poured down his face like blood drops. What made matters worse was that the mask he wore made him even hotter. He felt he was suffocating. He ran as far as he could without catching his breath. It was far enough for no one to find him or follow him. At least for no man to find him, he knew they would return with tracking dragons.
He looked down at the mossy dirt. He saw the Night Fury's tracks imprinted in the soil. He covered the tracks with leaves and twigs before cautiously treading over them. The trail of tracks disappeared after following them for a minute or so.
"Did they fly off.." he wondered.
No, that couldn't be it. He needed to look closely at his surroundings. Maybe they were hiding their tracks.
"Smart kid.."
The man then noticed a thin line indented in the soil. It looked like a snake trail but with the temperature being colder than normal, that couldn't be a snakes trail. Curiously, he followed the trail.
Toothless' ears once again perched up, someone is coming. The steps got louder and louder. Toothless growled as he climbed up the tree, his claws indenting into the bark. Hiccup held on weakly his tail. Toothless watched from above cautiously. He watched as the figure came from the north.
"The trail is gone. Where are you?" He muttered.
Toothless wasn't sure if it was a guard or their newfound friend. Toothless growled before jumping on top of him from behind.
"Oof."
Toothless growled before he heard a muffled, "It's me! It's me!?"
The dragons green orbs returned to their loving size before getting off the man.
"You're heavy for your age.." the man said rolling over out of breath.
Toothless grinned his gummy smile, exposing his pink gums to the stranger before smelling him. There was something foreign about him. The moment he smelled blood he looked at him concerned.
"It's fine. How's your rider?"
Hiccup laid there slightly dazed before responding, "Never been.. better.."
"We need to get to the cave. No one will come looking for us now, it's nearly dark."
Toothless nodded, Hiccup was having blurry vision and hallucinations.
"Astrid? Where are you..going.." Hiccup got up panting before falling to the ground.
"Astrid!?"
The figure covered his mouth, "Hey, can you keep quiet? They can find us with your shouting you know."
Hiccup nodded quickly before whispering, "Ah..strid.."
The figure helped him up before hoisting him over Toothless.
"We will help your friend when we get there." He added.
Toothless nodded, as they continued the journey to the cave. They walked through the moss and marsh. The cave was on the other side of the island. The awkward silence was almost suffocating.
"Why.. are you here?" Hiccup slurred.
"You need a doctor."
"I..am fine..." Hiccup panted.
"You're a terrible liar. We are almost there."
They continued finally reaching the cave. Inside the cave, there was already a pile of twigs for a campfire, some baskets filled with things, and a map. Clearly the stranger had been planning this for a long time. He just didn't account for this situation.
Toothless rested in the farthest part of the cave. The figure sat Hiccup beside him. The man pulled out a few twigs from his satchel and clumped them together. He scoured around the cave for bark and leaves. He then focused on building a fire. Then with the friction of a sharp rock and his pocket knife, he lit the small hill of dry leaves, bark and twigs. Now they had a warm campfire. He moved Hiccup closer to the fire.
Toothless was hungry, his stomach growled.
"Your hungry, right? Hold on." He said.
He dragged a basket all the way to the hungry Night Fury. He opened it, and to Toothless' surprise it was fish! He took 10 fish from the basket, leaving 15 silvery, delicious fish in the basket. With the handful of fish, he stuck a stick in each one and put it on top of the fire. While the fish began to cook, Toothless began devouring the silver fish. Outside the cave, it began to pour. He set an empty jug just outside the cave. While he tended to Hiccup, the jug would collect water.
The stranger then pulled out a first aid kit he had brought with him, in case anything happened. He pulled out some herbs and began to heat them over the fire. With a makeshift pestle and rocks he grounded the herbs to small pieces. He collected the jug now half full and poured some of the water into a kettle with the grounded herbs. As it boiled, he gave the herb tea a stir and then slowly helped Hiccup drink it. As the liquids were introduced into his body Toothless stared at the stranger.
"It's just tea. These herbs will help him feel better."
After ripping part of his cloak and moistening it in the rain, he wrapped the damp fabric over Hiccup's head and lightly laid him beside Toothless. The rest of his cloak was wrapped around Hiccup. This finally revealed the physique of the figure. He was very thing but wore a mask hiding his face.
Toothless wrapped his tail around Hiccup before staring at the man.
"What?"
Toothless looked away as if he hadn't been staring at the mysterious man.
He sighed, "It's not safe to discuss anything here."
Toothless huffed before laying his head on his paws. After letting the baked fish cool he set them aside. After a few hours, the scent of cooked fish awoke Hiccup, startling the half asleep stranger and Toothless.
"What is this around my eyes and head?" Hiccup said palpating the fabric and knot.
Hiccup couldn't untie the knot so he pulled the bandana upwards off his head.
"You had a fever. I had to improvise." The man said holding his gloved hands near the fire.
Hiccup tried to sit up but groaned slightly. The man delicately helped him sit up.
"Thank you.."
"No problem." He replied slightly cold.
"Hey bud. Are you ok?" Hiccup softly patted Toothless' head.
Toothless smiled before licking him, " Ugh Toothless, know that doesn't wash out.."
Hiccup moved slightly again before feeling that excruciating pain. The stranger laid him back down.
"Don't move, it will hurt. I think your rib is broken. If not, it's pretty close to. Stay down, it's for the best." He said.
Hiccup nodded, "What happened?"
The stranger replied, "Your safe, for now. Your lucky I found you. You would of been executed in one or two days. "
Hiccup didn't know whether to believe him or not to. He passed a starving Hiccup, some food.
"Do you want help?" The man said.
He looked at him slightly alarmed as he devoured the fish. He was starving. Toothless had a bowl of water beside him. The stranger passed him the jug of rainwater . Hiccup drank it slowly.
"Easy.. drink slower."
Silence filled the empty space. Hiccup simply examined the stranger. He studied the mask for a few minutes. The stranger could feel his stare.
"Why aren't you showing your face?" Hiccup asked breaking the peaceful silence.
The stranger turned to him.
"We aren't safe. When we are safe and I decide that its relevant, then I will reveal my identity. I didn't plan on taking scalawags with me, but I couldn't let you and your dragon die. That would be blood on my hands, for not saving you. Your welcome." He said said.
Hiccup replied, " We appreciate it. I'm Hiccup, I'm sure you've already met Toothless. "
The stranger nodded. "Get some rest. You'll need it for tomorrow morning. We will have to go to one of my checkpoints to give you proper medical care. This first aid kit has nothing that's going to help you. You have a dry nosebleed and bruises on your face. With a warm shower and proper care, you should be ready to get back to wherever it is that you live." He added.
Hiccup looked at him, "What about you? What are going to do?"
He replied, "I'll be watching for any activity, from Drago and his thugs, that is if they even bother looking for you, which they will."
Hiccup questioned, "How do you know that?"
"I know how that man thinks.."
He looked at him, "Look, it's best you don't question me until we are out of Drago's vicinity."
Hiccup looked at Toothless. He laid beside Toothless and only stared at him. The stranger noticed.
"Why aren't you sleeping?" He asked.
Hiccup replied, "Because I'm not sure if I could trust you. You might kill us in our sleep."
The stranger clearly was annoyed, " I would've killed you already.."
Hiccup gulped before saying, "What's your name?"
He crossed his arms, "That's classified kid."
Hiccup still kept staring, "I'll be watching you."
"Sure, whatever makes you feel comfortable."
Hiccup looked down slightly disappointed. The man noticed his disappointment.
"You can call me Edge."
Hiccup looked up before smiling.
"Don't get used to it kid. You're not from around here are you? Get some rest. I'll be on watch. Goodnight."
And with that the man got up and faced the wilderness not saying another word. It didn't take long for Hiccup to fall asleep. His soft snores echoing through the cave. This man.. was different.. Hiccup couldn't put his finger on it but he was going to get the bottom of it sooner or later.
