Hiccup spent the night thinking about Drago and what his life could of been. As he laid on the cold floor he put himself in his shoes. He remembered what it was like to loose Toothless to the Alpha and to loose his father. It is a pain that will never go away. If you let that pain blind you, it can forever change a person. He wondered a great deal about his family and where he came from. Maybe if tragedy hadn't strike him the way it did, he would still have some humanity left in him. Maybe his daughter could've convinced him that violence and revenge isn't a way of life but a dark moment in ones life. Maybe..
At the same time, Hiccup thought of how different he and Drago were. Their different reactions to losing a loved one. Even though experiences shape people, Hiccup did not let the darkness blind him. He thought of Toothless and how not killing him led to the most unexpected and beautiful friendship. Hiccup was grateful. Grateful for everything in his life. That's something Drago wouldn't have. He lacked the piece of himself needed to retain his compassion and love. And that in turn took its toll. Little by little it ate away his peace.
If all these maybes were true, Berk wouldn't have a threat. He wouldn't have to worry about him, but he did. Sadly that was not the case and they needed to find a way to escape. If Hiccup could regain some energy, maybe they could get out. It was morning again and Hiccup still hadn't received any food or water until now. A few muffled footsteps traveled down the hallway and then took a halt. Suddenly, a man came in. Presumably, one of Drago's thugs. Hiccup and Toothless quickly acted like they were sleeping. They hoped he wasn't an executioner. The mysterious man held a plate, 2 bowls and a pitcher of water. He opened the cell with a key and left the plate, bowls and pitcher there. He then took something out of his pocket and placed it beside Hiccup's hands. He then closed the door of the cell and walked out. Hiccup opened his eyes and looked at the bowls and plate of food. Hiccup then moved his hands and his fingers traced an unidentified object (UFO).
He first hesitated, thinking it could be a dagger ,but his curiosity git the best if him. His warm hand hovered on top of the unknown object as he placed his hand on top and felt the cold of the object underneath his fingers. It was long, with a circle on top and what felt like an E on the bottom, two big stubs and a tiny, littler one in the middle. Hiccup picked it up. It was a key. A key? Why would he give him a key? It surely wasn't Drago. Then who?
Hiccup unlocked his hands and then his feet. As he removed the brace connecting him from the wall using the chain, he wrapped his hands around his wrists. They were red, his skin was irritated by the touch of the cool old metal. A few cuts were opened and the hair touching them only made Hiccup slightly wince at the pain. When he took them off he felt free. He quickly unchained his foot and peg leg prosthetic and walked towards Toothless. He stopped, he was in pain. He braced his rib cage. It profoundly stung. He quickly unstrapped Toothless from all the leather straps and mouth restraint he had on. They then walked to the plate. Toothless opened his wings and stretched. He then unchained Toothless' feet. They as well looked like Hiccup's wrist, irritated and scratched up by the metallic touch of the chains. Hiccup got up and walked around. He needed to stretch his feet, sitting for a long time made Hiccup's foot and peg leg numb. At first it was hard to walk, but then Hiccup got the hang of it. Hiccup picked up the plate. It had a badge note on it, with black pencil lead writing on it.
It said, "Here's some food it will help you survive until a later notice. It will give you strength, since you clearly needed it. Do not say a word about this to anyone and hide the plates and bowls under or behind the ledge in the corner. There's a loose brick, wait 15 minutes after Drago leaves. I will pick it up. Drago won't come until a few hours later. Be sure to act like your sick and injured, so he will buy it. Until later, stay alive."
It had no name. Hiccup flipped the badge note over, but there was nothing. Toothless didn't hesitate to hit the bowl knocking it over. The bowl contained fish. Toothless had his way with the fish, devouring them with pleasure. His expression put a smile on Hiccup's face. Hiccup got his plate, there were baked and fried fish with vegetables and a pitcher full of water. Hiccup ate his fish happily, at least he wasn't going to die of hunger today. In 15 minutes, both Toothless and Hiccup had devoured the food on their plates and drank all the water. They then did as the note instructed making sure to follow the instructions as best they could. Surely the person who wrote this note wanted them alive.
Then the rowing of the boat suddenly began to stop. The boat was no longer rocking and all movement had stopped. Boom! Hiccup regain his balance as he felt a strong force hit the boat. He looked at Toothless, who was smiling his gummy rosy, pink smile. That smile that always made Hiccup smile. Then the door opened. A man with charcoal black hair walked in, alone. He closed the door.
"Hey, its me. You sure follow instructions flawlessly, I'm impressed.."
"You're the one who brought us the food?" Hiccup asked.
"Look I have little time to explain, you've been moved. I'm in charge of moving prisioners to another cell on land. We haven't got much time. We better go before they see you in a cell, free." He whispered.
He opened the cell door and shook Hiccup's hand.
"I'm Shear." Shear said.
"I'm Hiccup, thank you, Shear. This is Toothless" Hiccup said.
Shear was a man who was straight to the point. He strictly followed orders and had only failed on one mission before becoming the executioner. He did well training under Drago, having lots of potential. However Shear knew that what they were doing was wrong. He had heard of Hiccup and how he fought Drago. He was impressed that he convinced Eret to change. That feat was something that was very rare.
Shear shook Toothless' paw as he sat up like a person. Hiccup handed him the silver engraved key. Shear only pushed it away wanting him to keep him. Before he could open the door, he made sure there was no evidence in the cell. Shear had become very good and covering his tracks. Being the only useful protege Drago had, he was trained well.
Shear possessed many skills. He was an expert marksman, excellent scouter and tracker. He could live out in the wild for days on end without being given anything. Due to Drago's grueling training he earned himself the title of executioner.
"Why are you helping us?" Hiccup asked.
"Because, I know who you are. You're the dragon master and I honestly don't want to see another execution. You deserve to live. Eret is my brother. He has said many things about you. Your reputation precedes you." Shear mentioned as he put unlocked cuffs on Toothless and Hiccup.
Hiccup replied, "We appreciate it Shear. You know, you could come with us. Eret would be happy to see you."
Shear looked at Hiccup then Toothless, who was nodding and grinning.
"Sorry, I can't. I obey orders to stay alive. Its my cover, for survival. Is he wanted all around the world. I have my reasons. . ." Shear said.
"Why can't you?" Hiccup asked.
Shear thought long and hard. Escaping would mean freedom. However he knew that if he left, he would have a high bounty on his head. He also knew that he would fail a promise to someone very important to him. Shear never took promises lightly.
"I do this for her. I watch her father for her, even though she's in Valhalla. That's the reason why I stay. I promised her, and I intend to keep that promise. Promises are not meant to be broken Chief." Shear replied.
Hiccup wondered, who's her? Perhaps someone special, someone close to his heart. Maybe she could be saved too. Maybe there were more hostages here.
"Her?" Hiccup asked.
"She was Drago's daughter. We liked each other, but then again we were much younger. It was a lifetime ago. I was 16 and she was 14. Then she died and I was never the same. Eret used to babysit her, and when I saw her. . .She mesmerized me." Shear remembered her face.
Her smile, her stregnth, her endurance. Everything was perfect. Shear remembered the day they met. Drago had just slaughtered the people and dragons on their island. Eret and Shear were found hiding in a shed by some of Drago's men. They were determined to extinguish every last soul. Had it not been for her. Shear remember the split second he thought they would die. He thought if he had lived as long a life to die that soon. Suddenly the men collapsed to the ground. And what appeared behind them was even more surprising. It was a girl. Her hair as dark as the night and eyes and focus as sharp as a dagger. She walked up to them and held out her hand. She simply said, "Come with me if you don't want to die."
She convinced Drago to keep them. They soon became the best of friends, each learning from each other.
Hiccup replied, "Oh, she was the one.. "
He nodded.
"I've got one of those at home, on Berk. What was her name?" Hiccup casually asked.
"Marikai Bludvist. She was.. we were.. I couldn't tell her. It was too late." He replied.
Shear breathed every word out sadly. Shear remembered the very moment he realized he was in love with her..
Two figures sparred the day away. She was good at fighting but he thought he was better. He pinned her down to the ground.
"You need to get better." He said.
Marikai rolled her eyes, "Oh really? If I can get out of your grasp and escape, you owe me."
Shear said, "Marikai your full of yourself."
Shear ate his words as five seconds later his body slammed towards the wall. Shear grasped his jaw.
"For a woman.. you punch like a man." Shear said groaning and he grasped his jaw.
His eyes trailed her figure subconsciously as he simply saw a smirk grow on Marikai's face. Her brow raised ever so slightly as she taunted , "You were saying?"
Shear crossed his arms as he looked away in frustration. He thought he had her. Out of the corner of his eye he saw something come up quickly making him skittish and flinch.
Marikai simply laughed.
"You flinched." She said laughing even harder.
Shear groaned in annoyance as he saw the tears of laughter form in her eyes. Shear simply was unamused. This is bullying he thought.
Marikai held extended her hand out to Shear and she regained her composure. A smile appeared on her face. His eyes met hers. They were pure and vibrant..so beautiful and mesmerizing. Suddenly, his cheeks flushed a reddish hue as he looked away. Why did she have to make that face at a time like this? Why did it pull at his heart so much? Is this a normal feeling? All these questions arose in Shear's mind.
Marikai flicked his forehead as she examined his face. What was this expression? Marikai had never seen Shear do such a face. It was odd. As she examined his face, she inched slightly closer to his face. Her judge mental gaze thoroughly examined his. His eyes widened as Marikai's expression changed.
"What's wrong? Do I have something on my face? " Marikai said concerned.
"No.." Shear said as he took her hand.
"Let's go Marikai.."
Shear simply replayed the very memory in his mind. It was like looking at the sun. So warm.. so pure. She was beautiful.
Marikai's raised her brow, "You're acting weird."
She then punched him twice in his arm. Shear angrily replied , "What was that for!?"
Marikai began walking away before saying, "Two for flinching."
Shear muttered, "Two for flinching.."
Hiccup looked at him confused, before Shear snapped out of his thoughts.
"Who's yours? She's atleast alive right?" Shear asked regaining his composure.
"Yes she is. Her name is Astrid. I was about to marry her yesterday, but I'm here now. Drago ruined our wedding day. But I intend to get back to her and marry her." Hiccup said straightforward.
Shear smirked, "A man who knows what he wants and doesn't waste time. I like you. Come on, you can't do that from here. You have to get home."
Shear acted like Hiccup and Toothless were the prisoners. He pulled out a sword, alerting both Hiccup and Toothless.
"Don't sorry, just follow me in whatever I do or say." He commanded.
They obeyed. Shear's eyes became cold. It was almost as if there was no warmth in his soul or the irises in his eyes. It was almost frightening how quickly he changed. Shear acted as if he was going to execute Hiccup, his expression emotionless. The only thing hinting at any sign of emotion was his ice cold glare . Many men avoided him when he glared as they all said, "His glare will send you straight to Valhalla."
Shear was a respected man. He had executed more men and women than anyone else in Drago's crew. At times it put him at odds with Marikai. Marikai excelled in all combat and weaponry but she did not execute innocent people. She refused to do so.
Hiccup walked out of the ship. It was humongous. It had metal welded on. It was heavily armored with 4 cannons on each side. The ores were wooden, from what it seemed, and they were in between each cannon. 5 giant wooden ores on each side. The sail, was dark beige in color and huge in size. Almost like a big blanket, that could cover almost all the gang, twice. Maybe even more than that. How could a ship that big, float on water? Water is so dense, yet it can carry anything. Its almost indestructable, bending in new forms and shapes. Hiccup snapped out of his thoughts as he saw Drago stand before him.
"Commander, sir. I have the prisioners. Shall I take them to the dungeon?" Shear asked in his dark voice.
Drago nodded, "I hope you have sweet nightmares, Chief of Berk."
Shear continued his route to the dungeon on the farthest side to the facility. He had specific instructions as to how he would guard the prison cell. It's rusted metallic bars extended far beyond Hiccup's reach. Shear directed them into the cell. It was bigger and it actually had a bed! There were still chains though. Shear chained them, but this time the chains were longer and for Hiccup it was just his wrists. They were still cold. Toothless didn't get a mouth or body brace, but his feet were chained. At least they could move around the cell, without touching the windows or the doors. Shear put something in his pocket. It was a dagger. Hiccup looked at him.
"Keep it Chief, think of it as a gift from me to you. When you get back, say hi to Eret. I'm sure he's changed considerably throughout the years." Shear said kindly.
He nodded and with that Shear closed the cell door and left.
Hiccup began wondering what Drago's daughter might of looked like, but his train of thought was interupted when he began to think of Astrid. Oh, how he missed her. Her blue eyes, her personality, her toughness, her blond hair, her everything. Hiccup was now on an unknown island, in some unknown uncharted territory. At least they were on land.
Hiccup was thankful. His stomach churned as he started getting seasick a few hours ago. Land was still, no rowing, no moving up or down or side to side on water. It was just land. Hiccup was happy that he was at least on stable land with a bed to lay his head on, instead of the cold, desolate floor. He looked around, there was a desk and a bookcase full of different books on dragons and other things. Almost like a book of dragons, except the it was split into much more books, specifically volume 1-15. The bookcase had many more things that Hiccup couldn't tell what it was. Some written with unknown languages. Those sparked Hiccup's curiosity the most.
Hiccup smiled as Toothless took the bed first, before Hiccup could even turn around. Hiccup crossed his arms.
"Toothless! You're on my bed!" Hiccup said in a pouty voice.
Toothless nodded "no" and adjusted his body on the bed. Toothless laid his head on the feather pillow. Toothless didn't like it, so he threw the pillow at Hiccup's face. It hit his target just as planned, Toothless only waited for the umph. Hiccup felt the feathered pillow touch his face.
"Toothless! Don't you make me go over there and tell you again." Hiccup said.
Toothless didn't really care. Hiccup walked up hitting him with the pillow. Toothless only tripped Hiccup with his tail and got off the bed. He later his head on his chest.
"Oh. Dragons and Vikings are enemies again!" Hiccup teasingly said, as he protected his face from Toothless' slapping laws.
He began swatting his face. Toothless liked doing this to Hiccup. At least there was a happy moment today. He then set his head quickly on his chest again. Hiccup smiled. He liked this, it made him forget that he was stuck in a dungeon, chained to a wall. Toothless got off of Hiccup and only stared at him. Hiccup got up and laid in his bed. Toothless was right beside him. Thanks to Shear he and Toothless would survive for as long as possible, until they'd find a way to escape. Hiccup couldn't wait to get out and go back home. Maybe Shear would change his mind and come with them. Eret would be happy to see him. Hiccup began to get lost in his thoughts. He soon drifted away, as his eyes began to get heavy and droop down. Hiccup tried staying awake, but he was unsuccessful. He soon fell asleep and Toothless was right beside him. They didn't know what adventures and problems tomorrow would bring. All they knew was they had to be ready. Anything was possible.
