The sun was slowly rising and Skye was already up. It had been almost 3 weeks since she had first been on Berk . Today was the day she'd get her stiches off and she did. After a brief period of pain, Skye sighed as she decided it be best to train a little. Before leaving Gothi's hut, Gothi have her a fabric bag of herbs and plants and in there contained her test. It would decide if she could be Gothi's assistant. Skye took that and put inside her satchel carefully. It was just a little guide to the test, the rest was on her own. Skye tyanksed her and sighed as she left deciding to start the morning off with grit and sweat. To stretch those muscles again. A workout would be nice. Even though Skye wanted to go train a little, she needed something in her body to burn off. Food. As much as Skye didn't want to admit it, she loved to cook. Skye could be in the kitchen all day if she wanted. Just like her mother. . As she headed off towards the village, a scent made Skye follow and longer towards it. Skye had some money, it wasn't a lot but it could get her a snack, maybe a meal. Before she knew it, she was in the bakery looking at the fresh bread coming out of the oven. The bakery was hot and toasty but what made it something unique was all the different smells contained in one little building. The scent of macaroons, bread, cookies, and other delicous goodies.
Skye became distracted when the putter patter and crackle of pans hitting the floor alarmed her. Then there came a trouble baker coming out of the kitchen. Her face seem like she was trying to get this right without any mistakes.
Her stomach growled, wanting attention. The girl looked up as Skye embarassly said, "Sorry. I was just. . .hungry."
She shruged saying, "I know, your face says it all. It's hard to choose out of all these delicous treats, huh?"
Skye nodded as she watched the girl put the cookie dough now sitting on parchment paper and a metal tray in the oven and begins washing the dishes. There were at least 60 cookies. It seem endless. The girls seems to busy as she doesn't even dry the mixing bowls before slipping on a water puddle. Skye only heard her groan as she jumped over the table and cashier and helped the girl up. She was a mess. Her clothes full of dough, frosting and flour. Skye remember what Hiccup has said. His words replayed in her mind. This was the first step. The art of compassion, she thought.
Skye sighs and says, "Quite a tumble you took there. Here let me help you."
Skye couldn't believe she was actually helping her out. After mopping the floor and cleaning those dirty dishes and making the station more tidy, Skye sent the poor girl to change.
"Go on. Change. I will finish up here." Skye said not thinking what she was saying.
As she processed what she had done in her head, she decided to get over it and just help this kid out. Skye decided to check out the cookies backing in the oven. The cookies should've been cooked but the were just hot dough instead. Skye looked at the door the girl had walked out off and then the dough cookies. Something was up. Something was definitely up. This machine isn't working properly.
This wouldn't help this baker at all. Of there was one this Skye could do, she could be a mechanic. The girl wasn't back yet so it made it more evident to Skye that this machine isng functioning properly. As she checked the other machines, none were working right. These needed modifications. Major modifications. Hmm. . .
As the brown haired girl came back a few minutes later, changed. She wore a knitted brown shirt with black pants and her badge apron on top. She smiled sheepishly looking at the bakery in awe that is until she heard the bang and crash of pans and metaluc objects touching the ground. It alarmed her making her enter the kitchen to see what was going on.
"What are you doing!?!?!?!?!?" She almost screamed.
Skye came out from under the oven laying her back on a wooden rolling board she found in the storage room.
Skye calmly said as she rolled back under the oven, "Oh, your back."
Her face was angry as she said, "Yes. I am. What do you think your doing?"
The baker saw that all her cookies and scones and treat that had been baking in the oven had been taken out and put on the counter.
She fumes with anger and steam as Skye replied calmly again, "Stop screaming and being angry. I'm doing you a favor. I'm fixing all your equipment. If you wanna keep running your little quaint bakery then I suggest you stop interrupting me from working. Your butternut scones, should be ready. Look at them. They are mush. Your cookies are the same. Wrench."
The girl handed her the silver wrench whose cold touch was actually refreshing due to the all the accumulated heat in this little bakery. Skye began fixing the bolts and adding a few new things to the oven from some parts on her bag.
"Bag." She said.
The confused baker only was baffled at her attitude and her way around the kitchen as she passed Skye her messenger bag, "What are you doing to my ovens and machinery? "
Skye rolled out from under the oven and sighed giving a tiny smile, "If you want your bakery to be tip top shape then you'll thank me later. Look, I've just updated your oven. Your treats should cook much faster and better now. Your welcome."
As she rolled herself back under the oven she heard a voice that surprisingly made her smile, "Thanks. I haven't had enough money to fix any machinery. Its just me. I am the owner now and I have no employers and I could close pretty soon, so save your breath."
Skye chuckled to which the girl asked, "Why are you smiling? What's so funny?"
Skye stopped chuckled once the girl grew tired of her laughing and chuckling making her kick the board, pushing Skye forward into the wall. Skye groaned as she rolled out from under the over, now with a bruise on her forehead.
Skye gave her a glare as she chuckled nervously, "Sorry."
Skye rubbed the spot and then got back to work, finishing the final touches and improvements on the inside and underneath the oven. Once Skye finished that oven, she put the scones and cookies back in the oven.
"That should be it for the oven. The heat modulator and gear should now heat up faster. Now your other oven has gotten an upgrade as well, now using a steel kink and spring instead of gears. Just let me finish the last couple tweaks on this thing. " Skye said, now starting on the repairs for bread oven.
The girl blinked as she saw the scones and cookies right into the oven. She couldn't but smile and she said truthfully, " Thanks. I don't think we've had a proper introduction, I'm Mavis Nora Eppley and you are?"
Skye rolled back into the light, "Skye Worthington. Nice meeting you Mavis."
Mavis them squealed making Skye alarmed and hit her forehead again. Mavis once again embarasingly apologized saying, "Sorry, but your the girl responsible for the Chief's saviour. You've got guts, saving him from Drago. "
Skye nodded, "Thanks. I guess. Ok, your machinery is now updated. The bread oven has 3 extra platforms for cooling down. Just pull the lever and it will flip upwards."
The total time for repairs had been 55 minutes. In that time Skye hadnt noticed that her shirt had been stained by the grease of the gears. It was Mavis who noticed first, gasping and then pointing at her shirt. Skye only looked down. The stain grew as Mavis tried to clean it, spreading to her pants.
"Its fine Mavis. I can clean it when I get home." Skye stubbornly replied.
Mavis pushed her towards the back of the store, "Change. Grease stains don't come out silly. Go on."
Mavis made a stern face as she tried imitating Skye in all her seriousness. . Mavis wasn't much of a serious girl, she was more of the happy go lucky sort of gal. After convincing Skye to change, Mavis handed her the outift and waited for her to change.
As Skye was putting it on, she couldn't but think about Hiccup's words. Words can impact people but Skye never thought that it would impact her in such a way. It was weird how she helped this girl out. They were complete strangers and yet Hiccup's words seemed to put her on auto pilot. Helping auto pilot that is. Skye shook the warm feeling inside her off as she realized that she now has to wear a skirt.
She mumbled, "Great. First the gears are jammed and now this. I hate skirts."
Skye hated wearing skirts but since there was nothing else avaliable, she forced a smile and just put in on. As she walked out she saw the Mavis had prepare lunch for them both.
Mavis only gleamed with excitement as she squealed, "You look great!!! It fits you perfectly!!"
Mavis came up and squished her in a hug while Skye breathed out, "Can't breath."
Mavis only chuckled nervously, "Sorry."
She quickly skitted her feet towards the tray full of food and set in between them.
"I made lunch." Mavis said with hope in her voice.
She hoped Skye would eat some. Skye gave a tiny smile as they both enjoyed lunch together.
"So Mavis, why don't you have any employees? Why are you all by yourself?" Skye asked after she finished her sandwich croissant.
Mavis looked up sober and swallowed slowly, "Well. ..it seems people who trust a certain viking suddenly thinks this bakery is grand, after just opening."
Skye furrowed her brow, "It was Hiccup wasn't it?"
Mavis only looked at her feet as she scoffed, "No!!"
Skye didn't buy it for one second before saying, "It was totally Hiccup. Don't deny it. "
Mavis glared saying, "Yes. Mrs. To the point. I had just opened and my dream of running a bakery was a reality. After my parents death in battle, I grew up with my grandmother and she helped me get to this point. Anyways, the chief somehow managed to taste a cake that I had made and soon enough he became getting his desserts and treats here. He is always here, one my best customers. When he asked me to make the cake for his wedding, Astrid didn't like it and hired someone else. People found out and to save myself trouble I just said that I didn't want to. People never saw me the same, but it's worth it. At least I have a clean conscience. I don't know how Astrid can act all fine about it?"
Mavis huffed as she took the tray back to the sink and set it there leaving Skye to think, "Making other people miserable huh? And she's marrying the chief, I almost feel sorry for Tornado Hairs. I wonder if he knows .. .
Mavis disrupted Skye's thoughts before Skye blurted, "Are you hiring?"
It surprised Skye that she asked but nonetheless she did. It surprised Mavis that a stranger did all this labor for free. Skye didn't ask for one thing. It was astonishing to Mavis that one person could be so interesting. . .
"Yes. No one has applied thanks to Astrid." Mavis was once again sober when she mentioned Astrid's name.
Skye stood up and said, "I know someone that might be able to help you with that. . ."
Mavis's eyes dazzled as she asked excitingly, "Who?"
Skye smirked, "Me. Starting next week, I'll come work here and be your bakery mechanic as long as I'm hired, but I'll need to work part time since I have a few other things to do."
Mavis only blinked before exclaiming, "You are hired!!!!"
Mavis once again hugged Skye before saying, "Thanks Skye. Your a hero."
She hugged her again. Skye reacted hugging her too.
"Don't worry. That blonde doesn't scare me. " Skye said as Mavis chirped happily.
"I feel bad for the Chief. He really likes her, they've been together for 6 years. I wouldn't blame him. " Mavis mumbled.
Skye took in every word that she said before saying, "Well he will find out sooner or later. He isn't blind nor and idiot. It's just a matter of time. So when do I start?"
Mavis squealed, "Monday at 6!! Thank you Skye. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!"
Mavis them gave her another hug before Skye replied saying, "Your welcome, your welcome, your welcome. I'll see ya then, ok Mavis. Oh, and don't worry, if she comes here and starts with her cruelty, you just come and tell me and I'll handle it."
It surprised Mavis at such a request but she agreed and with that Skye was off. The village was now busy, with people bustling it. Skye quickly got her messenger bag and left before she bumped into someone. Gobber.
"Hi lass. Haven't seen you since the party. That was some fine handywork you did in there. " Gobber said giving Skye a pat in the back.
Skye smiled replying, "Thanks Gobber. I tinker, it's a habit. She needed the update so I gave it a one of a kind modification. Anyways Gobber, it seems your going in to get some treats huh?"
Gobber nodded before saying, "Haven't you heard that this bakery isn't very good? She rejected doing Hiccup and Astrid's wedding day cake. Astrid even said that the lads doesn't cook nor bake any cake right. Such disgrace, poor lass."
Skye sighed pushing Gobber into the bakery, "Haven't you heard the other side of the story. Gobber I dare you to go in that bakery and try something from their menu. Prove to me that Astrid isn't a liar. Because I don't think she's right. "
Gobber now stood in front of the cashier in front of the bread and desserts. Gobber gulped, "Lass, you can't be serious?"
Skye smirked saying, "Prove it."
Gobber swallowed before saying to Mavis, "I would like to try that one."
Gobbler pointed towards the 4 layer Boisonberry cake. Mavis handed him a piece and Gobber swallowed slowly before taking a bite. After letting his tastebuds savor the cake and taste it. Gobbler was surprised. This was delicous!! Gobbler are in three gulps, asking for at least 2 more refills.
Gobber said, "I'm sorry I didn't give you a chance lass. This is delicous. I would like to order a cake. This kind. I would like to have some for the evening."
Mavis excitingly said, "Of course Gobber. It should be ready in 3 hours. You can come pick it up then."
Gobber nodded as he turned to Skye saying, "You were right. Lass I'm sorry. Now I know and I will come back for that came time after time. Its delicous, the best I've ever had."
Skye nodded saying, "Your welcome Gobber. I should be leaving now. Val is going to be worried sick since I've been gone all morning."
Gobber nodded and he witness Skye leave. Gobber than said, "She is just like Hiccup. She will prove you wrong. I need to tell him about this. "
In fact other than Hiccup, Skye was the second person to make him prove his own actions were wrong. Believe it or not, he saw much of Hiccup's personality in her. Little fractions of it. Skye and him were so different yet so alike and Gobber was now one to agree that she is a good addition to the village and that she could prove to be a positive influence on other people as well. . .
Gobber and Mavis were witnesses to this event. The event that triggered the thawing of a cold and frozen heart. Skye's heart. The more she stayed here, the more it seemed evident that she isn't tough because she wants to be, she tough because she needs to be and that hiding under a rock for all you life isn't necessarily the best choice to take. . .
