Skye awoke to a sharp pain in her back. It was more of a spewing, stinging feeling. Skye only got up to see that the bandages didn't hold up as long as she thought they would. She was now alarmed as her blood had stained the pillow sheets and blankets.
"Crap." Skye muttered under her breath.
Skye immediately took all the pillows and blankets and sheets, cleaning the matress who luckily didn't have any blood stains whatsoever. . .Skye decided to wear all black, wearing a black sweater with black jeans and black boots. Even though it was summer, that was all Skye had. So she did the best she could with them. Skye threw the sheets away and then went off to Gothi's who didn't have anyone there at the moment. Skye came in a gave Gothi a weak smile.
"Hi Gothi. " She waved.
Gothi nodded giving a grin. Skye have a tiny smirk.
"Gothi, listen. You can't tell anyone about this. I was wondering if you stitch my back up. I have a rather large cut that is bleeding way to much." Skye said acting like it isn't a big deal.
Gothi only looked at her with a furrowed brow and questioned where she got it. She nodded getting the needle and thread. Skye took off her shirt revealing the huge cut just on top of her under shirt. Gothi's eyes widened as she saw it. She knew this wasn't an incident, it was more certain than an accident or incident. Skye gave a nervous chuckle as Gothi crossed her arms wanting her to answer how she got it. Gothi wasn't much with words, but with expressions, she was a master, prone to get the answer she wanted one way or the other. Skye gripped her clothes tightly as she felt Gothi stitching her skin back together. She groaned but kept it on the inside not wanting to attract any attention. After 30 painful minutes, Gothi was done and Skye was in pain. Gothi then bandaged the wound. From looking at it, she knew this was either a wound from a sword or an axe. Gothi had her suspicions but she wouldn't say a word until she had the answer and knew it was accurate and 100% true. Skye put her shirt on and sighed giving her thank yous to her.
"Thanks Gothi. I appreciate you keeping it a secret." Skye said as she smelled something.
Skye questioned, " Is that Toxicodendron radican ( Poison Ivy) that I smell?"
Gothi furrowed her brow at her before she heard someone else come in. A little boy. He was itching and scratching himself everywhere. The mark of Poison Ivy evident everywhere. Gothi only looked at her, how did she know that? How could she have smelled something like that from that far? Even though it wasn't super far Skye's nose seem to pick it up just fine. The boy came in as Skye got up letting the boy take her seat.
"Look kid, you need medicine but first you will need a cold shower. Go on. Go to the back a take a cold shower which should make the itch go away for a while. Gothi, do you have some mint herbs and vinegar and some anti itch herbs?" Skye asked searching the cabinets until she found what she was looking for.
After grinding the herds together and adding the vinegar, the medicine was finished. It had the texture of a lotion and even though it had a strong scent, it would do the trick. Once the boy came back, Skye instructed him to put on the rash and everywhere it itched. She then wrote a note and told him to give it to his mother or guardian. After a good 35 minutes later, the boy left with the treatment in hand and waved him good bye.
Skye then headed for the door until Gothi stopped her handing her a paper. A paper for being a clinic herbalist and her assistant. Skye furrowed her brow at her, " You don't have an assistant?"
Gothi nodded no and then wrote on a piece of paper, "Trade your work and labor for keeping your secret and not telling Hiccup."
Skye grumbled and smirked saying, " You are a very mysterious doctor aren't you? You wouldn't dare."
Gothi gave her a smirk and wrote, "I would. It wouldn't affect me whatsoever."
Skye glared at her as Gothi smirked. Skye gave in saying, "Fine. What do I have to do?"
Gothi pointed to the paper which instructed to find a couple herbs around Berk and make a special medicine. Gothi smirked writing on her clipboard, " The chief would like to know that that cut wasn't an accident. It came from a weapon, a sword or preferably an axe. We all know who wields an axe. . .hmm."
Skye gulped, "Fine. Not a single word. Deal?"
Gothi nodded writing, "I drive a hard bargain which is why I dont have an assistant. I choose them myself. I choose you. "
Skye gave her a smirk, "Why me?"
Gothi snickered and hummed before writing, "There is greatness in you. You just dont know it yet."
Skye only read the paper before Gothi pushed her out writing on the paper that she had 1 week to find it and get it done. Skye knew she would have to do it. It was her secret or Hiccup would flip. Skye needed a job anyway. She would need to pay Hiccup back on his hospitality. Skye rolled her eyes as she said, "I need more than a week. Give me sometime Gothi. I have things to do first. . ."
Gothi thought about it before nodding in agreement. Skye sighed as she exited Gothi's hut acting like nothing happened. As she passed by the great hall she saw a familiar face with eyes of green and auburn hair that would be recognizable anywhere. As Skye tried her best not to bring any attention to herself, Snotlout's voice wasn't one to hide from and neither was Hiccup's.
"Skye!!!! Over here!!!" Snotlout said as she stopped dead in her tracks.
She forced a smile, turning around saying, "Hey guys, didn't see you there."
Ruffnut replied, "Trapped in your own world. I like that!"
Skye shrugged as nervously smiled all while Tuffnut asked, "Why are you wearing a sweater in the summer?"
Skye sassed back replying, "Because I want to. Besides, I love blue and black. Those are my favorite colors. Now Tuffnut, isn't that your chicken over there?"
Tuffnut turned around faster than a wink. "I don't see anything!" He replied.
Skye used the opportunity to sneak away from them as she made her way into the forest. Skye passed through the leafy vegetation, her footsteps rustling as her body hid from the gang. For everyone except Hiccup. As Skye made it to the beach, Toothless ran up behind her picking her up landing on his back.
"Whoa!" Skye said as Toothless ran around. It was almost like a bill ride at a rodeo. Daybreaker came shortly after with worry in her eyes. Skye noticed and immediately nodded no, giving Daybreaker a sign not to be so worrisome. As Skye slid off Toothless' back she felt a slight pinch in her back. Skye swallow the pain keeping it inside her. Hiccup ran up beside her catching up to her.
"Hiccup. What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be with the gang?" Skye said burrowing her brow at him.
Hiccup raised his arms up in utter defeat, "Ok, you caught me. I saw you leave and I wanted to make sure you were ok."
Skye continued walking on the beach as Hiccup walked beside her, "Hiccup I'm fine. I can protect myself."
Hiccup looked at her and nodded, "Yeah, I have no doubt about that. What were you doing at Gothi's earlier?"
Skye's eyes widened as she looked at him in shock. She uttered, "H-have you been watching me!?!?"
Hiccup's cheek heated up before he replied shuttering, "N-no, that's not what I meant. . .I mean I saw you go in and I wanted to know if you were ok. . ."
Hiccup trailed off as his excuses became a futil attempt at lying to her to the point where Skye started laughing. Hiccup hadn't ever heard her laugh. Her laugh was surprisingly sweet yet soft. She bursted of laughter. After a few seconds of pure unexpected laughter, Skye said, "I'm sorry Hiccup. It's just I find it funny that you care enough about a stranger to see that they are ok. Its surprisingly charming you care. . ."
Skye stopped immediately realizing what she said before saying, "Don't get you head in the clouds ok. It was a friendly compliment. Don't think I like you or I will punch the feeling out of you, got it?"
Hiccup nodded, "Got it."
After a few seconds of silence Hiccup smirked, "So me caring for you is surprisingly charming?"
Skye hit his shoulder, "Not anymore. It's more annoying now."
Hiccup looked at her, "Did you just call the Chief annoying?"
Skye sassed, "Yes now suck it up."
Hiccup are his words as he started laughing. His thoughts had gotten the best of him and now a question remained in his head. It was clearer than crystal for Hiccup. Skye furrowed her brow at him, "What's so funny giggles?"
Hiccup then became serious saying, "I don't get why it's so hard for you to let people in and to believe that someone actually cares for you Skye? What are you so afraid of?"
Skye sighed as the question hit a nerve deep inside her, "Where I come from I was taught not to believe in trust or compassion but to earn through anger and fear. I find it rare that people do care because most people are selfish. I found it funny that you care because I've never met anyone who does the way you do. For me compassion is being soft and I wasn't raised that way. "
Hiccup's eyes softened as a smile grew on his face, "Skye, have you ever let anyone in? Past those barriers, past the tough act, past Your imperfections into your heart?"
Skye scoffed saying, " Tough act? I'm not acting?"
Hiccup replied, "Really Skye, Because I know that deep down inside you have a heart and when you know something isn't right you strive to do something about it. You don't want people to go what you went through. Its a tough act Skye and I gotta hand it to you. You play it well but that isn t what's on the inside. . . Has any person ever gotten pass those barriers in your heart?"
Skye stayed quiet, never had she been asked such a question and for that reason, she was startled. Who was this boy she barely knew, asking questions she never dare answer? Hiccup. The one and only. He had a way with words that always took Skye by surprise. He was smart enough to see through and read like a book. Skye on the other hand was puzzled by the question as she never gave it a thought.
Skye was now a little stiff replying with a mere, "No. Never thought it was important. I don't need friends. I just have Daybreaker and my dragons and I'm fine by myself. "
Hiccup taunted saying, " Again with the tough act. . .Skye that's not really you, it's a cover. Know why? Because like you said, you let Daybreaker in. Daybreaker is a living example that your touch act isn't what you heart is. The tough act just scares everyone off."
Skye sighed, "Fine, I just let Daybreaker in. She is the only one who doesn't know me just for my tough side. There I said it, I don't always have a touch side but 99 percent of the time I do. I Don't get why compassion is so important to you?"
Hiccup thought about, a brief moment of time filling with silence before he replied, "Because you know your loved. You know you have a home, a family, someone who scares for you. Something to come back to. Haven't you ever felt that from someone before? Wouldn't you want to show that person that same affection they've shown you?"
Skye sat down on a rock and felt the wind whisper her song as it passed through the strands of her hair. It was refreshing yet it made her calm. She was at peace whenever the wind would whisper her song along the beach. Skye took a while in responding but when she did she said, "Compassion is difficult. Only a few people have ever showed me compassion so I never thought it would affect anyone in any way. For one person like me, I owe it to my mother and Alice, to at least show some compassion. Daybreaker and the dragons were the only living things I cared for after they died. Its not the same. Compassion is just difficult."
She became flustered at the thought as she skipped a pebble towards the oceanside. A soft pebble that was course on the inside and smooth on the outside. It was flat and could easily skip itself on top of water. Skye watched the flat grey pebble skip 4 times over the clear salty ocean water. Hiccup only watched her and then imitating, trying to make her feel comfortable and at ease. He could tell it was hard for her to do so. To drop the tough act and to show her true feelings, her hearts secrets and desires.
Hiccup threw a pebble similar to the one Skye had found in shallow tide, towards the oceanside making more skips than the shiny silver pebble Skye had thrown making 7 skips over the salty ocean water, "Skye, compassion is something that you will grow into as a person. Don't you think that you should at least owe some of your compassion to your mother's and Daybreakers sake?"
Before she could respond, a splash of cool water hit her face making her shiver at it's cool touch. Skye shook it off directing her attention to both Daybreaker and Toothless. A tiny smile appeared on her face as she saw both Nightfuries splashing around with the beach at low tide. The sea was calm, the waves rolling in, one by one.
Skye only looked down at her reflection, "I love the beach. Its always calm and beautiful. Beaches have wonderful sunsets. I always get inspiration for my drawings as I look out on the horizon seeing purples, red, oranges, pinks, and yellows paint the sky, using it as a canvas."
Hiccup asked, "Why is compassion so hard for you Skye? Are you afraid? Are you afraid of finding out something you didn't think could happen, happened?"
She remained silent. Not a single expression was seen in her face. It was blank. . .Skye stood up, sliding off the rock and began walking in the other direction. Hiccup displeased with himself and the question ran after her. Hiccup didn't mean to hit a nerve but it did. Once Hiccup had caught up to her and after countless times of saying her name, Skye stopped.
"How it is possible that you can read me so easily? Like a book with its pages written with no end. So many words I'm not saying and yet you know. . . So I'm not so tough after all am I? I am afraid. There I admit it. I'm not the strong girl you thought I was and compassion isn't going to make it any better." Skye spat without thinking.
This was the first time she had actually revealed her feelings so blankly. . .so profoundly. Skye realised what she said and uttered, "I. . I. . .I shouldn't have come here!"
Skye turned 270 degrees, walking away. Skye felt somewhat exposed. She had been read. Read so easily. . .How it frustrated Skye that she didn't know much about her own feelings and that Hiccup seem to be an expert in this field. An expert on how to help people in their feelings. To be honest, she was oblivious about it. . . she didn't know what to think anymore. Words can make a difference.
Hiccup grabbed her arm, "Skye, I didn't mean that. I didn't mean to hit a nerve or to hurt you. I just want to understand why you are afraid of being compassionate and caring?"
Skye glared at him saying, "That's none of your business."
If anyone could give a death glare, it was Skye. Hiccup looked at her and then with force pulled her back, "You need to face your fears of you wanna get stronger Skye. Don't tell me that isn't true because you know it is. Skye, what is it about compassion that scares you, that makes you all defensive?"
Skye sighed, when will he ever learn to mind his own business. It was annoying that Hiccup could read her like a book and for Skye it was all the more frustrating when he had cornered her and pinned her down to the point that the truth seemed about the best way to get out of this one. . .
"I say compassion is hard because I don't know what compassion is. There ok. That's the truth. Compassion is somewhat a mystery to me. I can't cultivate something I don't know Hiccup. I'm afraid because I don't know if it will change me for better or worse and I rather not explore something that could succumb me into something much more than just me. . ." Skye said as she felt hot tears fall down her cheeks.
Hiccup wasn't expecting such words from her mouth. The truth. Skye prefered to keep it hidden but she couldn't no longer since Hiccup seem to have the upper hand now.
"Compassion is for the weak and I am not weak." Skye said using her hand to clear the tears away. She glared at him once more waiting for a word for something.
"Well?" Skye said rather flustered, "Aren't you going to make fun of me and tell me I'm weak and worthless? Compassion has no value to me and I am no value to anyone."
Hiccup looked at her distraught face and then halted her, "But you can learn compassion and then cultivate it. Skye, compassion isn't for the weak, it's for the people who believe in love and that aren't alone in this world. Skye, you aren't alone. You are value. Skye, You are my friend and I value my friends. You aren't worthless you are amazing and talented and your special, I just know it. You can be great Skye, You aren't weak. You one of the strongest people I know. Do you understand?"
Skye didn't say anything seeming that she was trying to process everything but that wasn't all Skye was doing. She uttered, " You say that as if you have known for a while. How are you so certain about me?"
Hiccup smiled saying, "I can see it in you. Your actions. Skye you aren't a blank slate. You are so much more."
"I can't cultivate compassion. Its impossible. A heart of stone doesn't have compassion Hiccup. Don't you know that? Compassion is broken inside this heart of mine and it can't be repaired." She spat.
Hiccup brought her into his embrace, hugging and consoling her, "Hey, nothing is impossible. You just need to take it one step at a time. Starting with this. Will you take my hand?"
Skye looked up at him utterly confused, "What?"
Hiccup repeated the question, "Will you take my hand?"
Skye backed a step away asking, "Why?"
Hiccup sighed, "Because when you take my hand, You are saying that you believe we can accomplish this together. I know we can. Skye, your heart isn't of stone. You just need to find it again. I'm here to help you find it again because I know you can. This is the art of compassion. "
Skye was a little startled when Hiccup held his hand out. Skye asked doubtfully, "One if people don't like me?"
Hiccup scoffed, "You? The great Skye Worthington is worried about what people think. . ."
Skye punched his shoulder, "No. . . I just don't want to seem weird that I'm learning compassion from you Tornado Hairs."
Hiccup retorted, "There's the insult."
Skye giggled, "Its not an insult. Its a nickname. Maybe you need to learn the art of nicknames."
Hiccup laughed making Skye smile a little wider now. Nonetheless, Hiccup held out his hand again saying, "Ready?"
Skye took a deep breath and said, "Ready."
Hiccup hugged her again, stroking her hair, "Skye, Berk is your home now."
Skye sighed as her facial muscles couldn't help but smile a little, "I guess it is for now."
Hiccup realized that every time he hugged her, he felt a warm feeling inside. It was quite strange since he was only consoling her and helping her find herself. It was strange that Hiccup felt tingly at helping her. Maybe that's how you feel when you help out someone who has no idea how to feel. Hiccup only assumed that for now it was just a sensation he hadn't felt in a while because he hadn't been with Astrid in a while.
Hiccup was just happy he could help her out and that she had made the first with him. Together they could conquer the storm. She had taken the first step of how to use the art of compassion. Hiccup hoped that maybe in time, she would be able to show what she really felt on the inside. But that was something only time could tell. . .
