Sephiroth vs Madara (Final Fantasy vs Naruto)

The last villain, the final boss, the ultimate challenge for any hero brave enough, or foolish enough, to undergo their quest. Over the years there have been countless deadly and powerful villains, but some of these villains were just so op, the only real reason they lost was because they're the badguy. Like Sephiroth, the One Winged Angel from Final Fantasy, and Madara, the Second Sage of the Six Paths from Naruto.

Before I begin I need to clarify how I will be approaching this particular match up. For this fight I will be fully compositing both Sephiroth and Madara, including feats and abilities from pretty much all of their appearances in games, movies, shows, etc. This even includes sources with questionable canon like the Kingdom Hearts and Ultimate Ninja Storm games. I'll also be including their ultimate forms of Safer Sephiroth and Six Paths Madara, even though neither of them have easy access to these forms. Trust me, it's just more fun to do it this way.

****(Sephiroth)****

Last Name: N/A

Gender: Male

Species: Human with Jenova cells

Occupation: Top ranking member of SOLDIER (Formerly)

Backstory: Some people are born to be powerful. Others are made powerful. Sephiroth however, was both. While still in his mother's womb, he was injected with the cells of an Ancient named Jenova as part of a super soldier program called the Jenova Project, which was a complete success. Growing up, Sephiroth joined Shinra's SOLDIER program and rose through the ranks, becoming their top soldier and one of the greatest swordsmen who ever lived. However, on a mission to Nibelheim, Sephiroth learned the twisted truth that he was a Shinra experiment and lost his mind. He destroyed the town of Nibelheim, killing most of its citizens. That is, until he was stopped by a young soldier named Cloud Strife, who impaled Sephiroth and managed to knock him into a hole in the ground leading to the life stream. This should have killed Sephiroth, but instead the life stream endowed him with god like power, allowing him to come back some time later with a plan to obtain the Black Materia and summon a meteor to destroy the world and take its Mako energy for himself.

Fighting Styles: Sephiroth is highly skilled in the use of magic and even hand to hand combat, but it's no secret that he prefers a sword above all else. With a blade alone in his hand, he is one of if not the deadliest warrior on the planet.

Arsenal: Over the years, Sephiroth has gained numerous abilities and techniques. His weapon of choice is his Masamune sword. This seven foot sword is longer than he is, and is perfect for slashing and stabbing from most ranges. It's also a pretty good conductor for his magic, of which he has plenty. Thanks to his leisurely soak in the Life Stream, Sephiroth can use magic without Materia and has an endless supply of mana, meaning he could pretty much spam spells with no real consequence. He can use all kinds of elemental magic to freeze, burn, zap, and stone enemies as much as he likes, defend from attacks with barrier and reflect, create dark energy blasts with Shadowflare, use healing magic to negate damage he's taken, cast illusions, use telekinesis, fly, shoot blasts from his sword and much, much more. His Heartless Angel attack saps away almost all of an enemy's life leaving them one hit from death, Jenova creates a field around him that slows enemy movement, and with the Black Materia, he can summon meteors at will. While these meteors can be big enough to destroy planets, fighting games like Ehrgeiz and Dissidia show him summoning smaller but faster meteors, likely implying that he can manipulate their size in exchange for speed. He can also grow a single black angel wing. I don't know why just the one, it seems pretty inconvenient and he can fly without wings anyway, but hey it's sure to sell merch and that's what matters. Anyway, if you think all that's impressive, Sephiroth can even take on other forms, including his ultimate form, Safer Sephiroth. If you thought his power was god like before, his Safer form is on a whole other level. In addition to being ridiculously powerful, he can cast his ultimate technique, Supernova, where he literally hits his opponent with an exploding sun to the face which wipes out an entire solar system. It's like I always say, there's no kill quite like overkill.

Strength: When he's not hitting you with planet busting meteors or exploding stars, Sephiroth's physical strength is still incredible. He can casually block an attack that cratered the metal beneath him, kick people through solid concrete, slice apart giant machines, and one shot powerful monsters like it's nothing.

Speed: Although Final Fantasy itself doesn't present the most concrete of speed feats, Sephiroth's appearance in Kingdom Hearts shows he can keep up with Sora, and that kid can dodge lightning and block rapid fire lasers. And for those saying that's just one outlier example, Dissidia has shown Sephiroth can also keep up with Terra, who in that same game also had to dodge lightning bolts and lasers in her boss fights with Ramuh and Alexander.

Toughness/Survivability: Sephiroth's sheer toughness is about as absurd as the rest of him. Even without healing magic, he's been completely impaled by the Buster Sword and it wasn't much more than an inconvenience to him. And in his Safer Form, he doesn't seem even a little hurt when in the explosion of Supernova (Some think that's because he's casting an illusion within Supernova to intimidate his foes and isn't actually there, but it's not really clear so it's up in the air).

Feats: Given how crazy overpowered Sephiroth is, it should come as no surprise that his accomplishments match the expectations. He's played a major part in ending the Wutai war, slaughtered giant monsters as easily as if he were stepping on bugs, and has kept pace with some of the strongest fighters from his world and others. Even when Cloud and all his friends ganged up on Sephiroth, he still had little issue fighting them all at once. And worst of all, he's single handedly responsible for one of the most infamous deaths in gaming history. Poor Aerith never saw him coming.

Weaknesses: Sephiroth is undoubtedly a deadly warrior to be feared by any and all who would get in his way, but he still has a few flaws. Not the least of which is his own arrogance. In Sephiroth's eyes, he is the greatest warrior ever and no one person could really challenge him, so he's almost certain to underestimate his opponents. But his most damning flaw is that he actually has a pretty poor reaction time when dealing with unexpected changes or when an opponent catches him off guard. This has led to him being defeated by Cloud more than once. Still, that hardly makes Sephiroth a weakling. He's one of the most infamous rpg villains for good reason. Any fool who gets in his way better be ready to feel despair.

****(Madara)****

Full Name: Madara Uchiha

Gender: Male

Species: Human

Occupation: Shinobi/Ninja of Konoha (Formerly)

Backstory: The Shinobi world has had a long history that produced countless powerful warriors, which makes sense. I mean, when you live in a world with this many ninja villages, you kinda have to be a serious badass to stand out. But even in this world brimming with talented ninja, almost no one is as powerful or as feared as Madara Uchiha. Madara was born to be a fearsome warrior, being the reincarnation of an ultra powerful ninja alien demigod person named Indra (Don't ask). As he grew up, Madara was a natural genius in the art of combat, which served him well as he lived in the warring states period, one of the bloodiest and cruelest points in shinobi history. Despite the struggle, Madara persevered and alongside his rival/friend, Hashirama Senju, founded the village hidden in the leaves, Konoha. But it wasn't without cost, as in his conflict rich life, Madara lost his entire family, even his brother. All this death and tragedy made Madara desire a world where war and pain no longer exist. And so, he came up with a plan to create such a world by using an ultra powerful Genjutsu called the Infinite Tsukuyomi to put everyone in the world into a dream world that Madara controls. And so he turned against Konoha to fulfill his plans, but Hashirama stopped him, and after a long brutal battle, Hashirama stabbed Madara in the back, supposedly killing him. But in truth, Madara lived on, and managed to keep himself just barely alive for years until he was able to manipulate a kid named Obito into helping bring him back to his prime. And so, the two declared war on literally every other ninja in the world, worked to revive the ancient beast known as the Ten Tails, and obtained the god like power of the Sage of the Six Paths, all to activate the Infinite Tsukuyomi.

Fighting Styles: Being one of the greatest Shinobi who'd ever lived, Madara is a master in the ninja arts of Taijutsu (Hand to hand combat), Ninjutsu (Basically magic), and Genjutsu (Illusions). In addition, he also excels in the use of numerous weapons from kunai knives to swords, sickles, and even a big ass fan.

Arsenal: Madara has a massive arsenal of weapons and powers. As a ninja, he's armed with kunai, a sickle, and his personal favorite, his fan. While smacking people around with a fan as big as he is sounds a bit silly, it's highly effective as both a weapon and a shield. In addition, the fan also makes for a great conduit for wind based Ninjutsu. Speaking of, Madara has numerous Jutsu up his arsenal. He can casually create massive fireballs so big and violent it takes several blasts of water jutsu just to cancel it out. And after obtaining some of Hashirama's DNA, Madara also gained access to Wood style jutsu, allowing him to create a massive wooden forest with Deep Forest Emergence, form wood clones of himself that are just about as overpowered as he is, and create and control wooden dragons. And that's not the half of it. Being an Uchiha, Madara also possesses the Sharingan, a special set of eyes inherited throughout the Uchiha clan. Like any good anime power up, the Sharingan has numerous stages, each more ridiculous than the last. The base Sharingan lets Madara see chakra, essentially letting him sense another's presence, boosts his reflexes, helps him resist illusions, and amps up his own Genjutsu illusions. He's also evolved it into the Mangekyo Sharingan, which can do everything the base Sharingan does, but way better. In addition, each Mangekyo Sharingan has at least one special power that makes it even more ridiculous. Madara's Mangekyo ability was never really shown in canon but thanks to Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations we know it allows him to turn back time, at least by a moment or so. But his more well known use of his Mangekyo is the Susano'o, a giant ethereal warrior made of chakra that manifests around Madara, making him nigh untouchable while using this ability. The only drawback to the Mangekyo Sharingan is that overusing it can make him go blind. But don't worry, Madara implanted his brother's eyes to evolve into the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, which basically lets him spam his Mangekyo powers with almost no consequence. He's also one of the only people to evolve his Sharingan into a Rinnegan, which gives him access to several special powers. He can summon powerful beasts, rip out and absorb people's souls, summon the king of Hell, absorb pretty much any ninjutsu, and control attractive and repulsive forces to push people back or create gravity spheres that suck in everything in the area to create a sort of planetoid. Oh, he can also casually summon gargantuan meteors big enough to decimate a dessert full of ninjas. In addition, he also absorbed Hashirama's natural energy, giving himself access to a sort of Sage Mode. With just the sensory buff he gets from sage mode, he was able to keep up with some of the world's greatest ninjas while unarmed and missing both eyes. All this alone is enough to make Madara a nigh unbeatable foe, but it's not quite the end yet. After reviving the Ten Tails and sealing it within himself, Madara gained access to Six Paths Sage Mode. This godly form makes him practically unbeatable. The sensory buff from sage mode gets an insane increase in Six Paths mode, and he gains access to the Truth Seeking Orbs. These babies are shapeshifting balls made of all the nature energies that can form any weapon Madara wants and can kill practically anything, even regenerating immortal zombies. They can also be used as shields that can block virtually any attack. Six Paths mode also lets him create sage lightning, fly, and spit out sage lasers that can even cut through Truth Seeking Orbs. But perhaps one of his more dangerous abilities is Limbo, a clone technique where Madara creates clones of himself that exist in the parallel dimension called Limbo but have a physical presence in the real world. In other words, invisible clones. Each clone can even form their own Susano'o, just in case they weren't already broken as hell. And the last of his Six Paths powers is the Infinite Tsukuyomi, where he flies up towards the moon, reveals a third eye in his forehead, and magnifies his Genjutsu off the moon to trap everyone in the world in the Infinite Tsukuyomi's dream world. Almost no one can even resist it. And if you do manage to somehow land a fatal hit on Madara he has one more, nigh unbeatable trump card, Izanagi. The ultimate Genjutsu that one can cast on themselves, Izanagi allows the user to momentarily exchange reality and illusion. To put it simply, with Izanagi Madara can take real world attacks inflicted on him and turn them from real physical damage to a mere illusion, leaving him completely unharmed. The only catch is using this ultra powerful move costs him an eye, but when you're seconds away from a brutal death it's more preferable to be lacking depth perception.

Strength: Madara's strength is insane. Even in human form he can casually block attacks from mountain busters like Naruto in Kurama Chakra Mode. And Madara blocking attacks like this is hardly surprising, considering his Susano'o can cleave the tops off of mountains just by unsheathing its sword. Madara also likely scales to Toneri, a space ninja that could CUT THE MOON IN HALF!

Speed: Madara's speed is pretty ridiculous too. He can easily keep up with Naruto Uzumaki, and that kid can dodge lightning and lasers. Huh, deja vu...

Toughness/Survivability: Madara Uchiha is one tough bastard. He's tanked hits from powerhouses like Tsunade, Guy, and Naruto. And even if you can cause some real damage, he also has regeneration so insane, he treats being cut in half like a minor inconvenience.

Feats: It goes without saying that someone as absurdly powerful as Madara has pulled off some insane feats. He's dueled Hashirama to a stand still, and while in a technically weaker body, he single handedly wiped the floor with an entire army of ninjas before then duking it out with the Five Kage, some of the strongest shinobi in the world, all while he was just playing with them and not taking any of his opponents seriously. He's captured all nine Tailed Beasts like it was nothing, kept pace with 8th Gate opened Might Guy, and even when Naruto and Sasuke got some Six Paths powers of their own to fight Six Paths Madara, he could still keep pace with them without going all out. Madara was just so damn overpowered, even Kishimoto, the author of Naruto, had no idea how to reasonably defeat this guy.

Weaknesses: Madara is a ridiculously powerful force and is basically unstoppable, but he's hardly perfect. His Chakra reserves, while massive and seemingly endless, do have a limit. Even at his best, if he uses up all his chakra, he'll be in serious trouble. What's worse, he's cocky and arrogant to a fault, and will actively hold back just to keep things entertaining. Should his opponent be on a similar or even greater level than himself, he could be caught off guard. He also seems to be a bit vulnerable to back attacks, as that's how Zetsu killed him. And speaking of, despite being considered a genius, Madara was ultimately manipulated like a puppet by Black Zetsu, which would come to be his downfall. But despite his faults, Madara is an extremely dangerous and cunning foe. If you challenge him without the power to back it up, your death will be quick, but it won't be painless.

Quote: "You Kage can bark as loud as you want, but it won't faze me. I'll end your pathetic lives here and now!"

****(The Match)****

****(The Results)****

This fight was incredibly close. Madara and Sephiroth pretty much matched each other when it came to physical attributes like strength and speed, and they seemed to hold an even number of advantages over each other for the most part. Sephiroth had better sheer toughness but Madara had better healing. Madara had a larger arsenal of weapons and powers but Sephiroth had more raw destructive power. What this ultimately came down to was Sephiroth's Magic vs Madara's Jutsu.

Sephiroth had numerous powerful spells that would give most opponents trouble, but Madara had a much larger arsenal. It also doesn't help that Sephiroth has no solid counters to some of Madara's higher level moves like Limbo clones, soul stealing, the Truth Seeking Orbs, and the Infinite Tsukuyomi, all of which could potentially one shot him. Meanwhile, Madara had a counter for almost everything Sephiroth could throw at him. Madara's Susano'o alone was tough enough to tank most of Sephiroth's attacks, his Sharingan made him immune to Sephiroth's illusions, and his regeneration, time rewinding, and Izanagi allowed him to recover from the few times Sephiroth did manage to inflict serious damage. Now that's not to say Sephiroth was totally outclassed. Moves like Heartless Angel and Supernova would catch even Madara off guard, and technically Sephiroth's healing abilities were better since he could spam healing spells endlessly. But he had to take the time to cast each healing spell, and a smart fighter like Madara wouldn't allow him to cast them. Meanwhile Madara's regeneration worked automatically. In the end, Sephiroth had enough tricks up his sleeve to keep up with and even press Madara, and under the right circumstances he could have won, but Madara's enormous arsenal, automatic regeneration, and plethora of counters gave him the edge he needed to clip this fallen angel's wing.

Winner: Madara Uchiha
