I can't tell you why I went back to school, I really can't. I can tell you, though, why I came back to my hometown. And that's because I felt guilty. I don't know why I felt guilty, but I did, so I came back.
It was the first day of my senior year at Westridge, and I wasn't all that excited about it. I had been a senior at hundreds of schools all across the world, and it's never as exciting as it seems. It gets quite boring if I'm being honest.
None the less, I parked my car in the parking lot like I always do and went inside. The halls were crowded and all I could hear were the basic "how was your summer, I missed you so much" greetings.
As I walked by, a few people waved at me. I smiled back, not really caring. Sure, people liked me, sure I was what they'd call "popular" but I didn't really care. It's didn't matter what other people thought of me. Of course, I still hung out with the most popular kids in the school, so maybe I was guilty of playing into their social high archery.
As I walked past the principles office I caught a whiff of a different smell. It smelled like a werewolf. Panic set in my chest as I increased my pace.
One thing I've seen portrayed in films and books is the fact that werewolves and vampires dong get along. And sure, most don't but it's more than that. Way back since the being of time, werewolves would slaughter vampires, and vampires would feed on werewolves. They didn't really get along, and even with current pack leaders trying to make peace, there's still violence.
Once I got to my locker I opened it and immediately looked for the cologne I kept in there. I grabbed it and put it on, trying to mask my scent. I didn't want this werewolf to know about me.
Quickly grabbing my books, I headed to my first class. I sat in the back and started talking to my friend Austin. Within a few minutes the bell rang and two boys came into the room, followed by our teacher.
I immediately got overwhelmed by the sent of both of them. The taller boy smelled the strongest. He had short, curly brown hair and piercing green eyes. He had darker skin and was probably Hispanic. The shorter boy didn't smell as strongly, but his smell was more distinguished. His blue-dyed hair was on the longer side, and he had dark brown eyes. His skin was lighter, and he had a crescent moon tattoo on his collarbone. How cliche. Both of them were jacked. I gulped, hoping they couldn't smell me.
Our teacher informed us on who they were, telling us they had transferred from South high school. The taller boy then introduced himself as Noah, and the other introduced himself as James. They took a seat off to the side of the class. Luckily, I didn't have to sit near them.
My whole day was spent trying to avoid the two new kids. They probably knew there was a vampire in the school, no amount of cologne could cover up my smell completely, but I hoped they didn't know it was me. I wanted to find out more about them before I reveal myself.
See, even though there are treaties that forbid war between werewolves and vampires, people still end up killed. Treaties don't mean peace, just punishment for wrongful acts. I wanted to find out if these two would honor the treaties, or if they were a threat.
After school I have football practice. My sister, Valery, had told me that I should get involved if I'm going to go to a normal high school. So I joined the football and basketball teams.
I'm the captain, meaning I was in charge of helping the new recruits today. I sighed as I reached the locker room. I was already late, and although coach tolerated it and made me regret it with constant teasing, it really didn't look good for me on the first day.
I quickly changed into my practice gear and ran out onto the field. Everyone was already lined up, ready to go.
"Clement, you're late." My coach teased.
"Sorry coach." I smiled back, walking over to stand next to him. You may be wondering how I can go out in the sun, and my answer is, vampires evolved. We slowly burn, meaning I can stay outside for short periods of time and all it looks like is that I got a sunburn. Sure, if I stay out for too long I'd probably burst into flames or something, but being outside for an hour or so didn't hurt me too bad.
"For all you newbies who don't know, this is Clement, your captain, who just so happens to be five minutes late."
"Welcome back everyone, and welcome to the team to all of our new players." I tried to act professional. Coach just snorted beside me.
"Alright kid, I'll take it from here."
I nodded and found a place in line as he told us the rundown of practice.
"Alright so we're going to split up and run through drills. Returning players with me, new players with Clement. He'll explain what you newbies will be doing. At the end we'll have a little scrimmage and then you'll be free to leave."
We broke apart and I took the new players over to the far side of the field. And quickly explained the first drill we'd do. As I was walking past all of them, I saw the one person I didn't want to see. Noah.
He smiled when I made eye contact with him, and I quickly looked away. I didn't want to deal with this.
"Everyone got it?" I asked. They all nodded and went off on the field. After I saw they got it down, I joined them. We ran through a few drills before coach called us back over.

After practice was over I headed back into the locker room to grab my stuff. The showers were full, so I decided to just take a shower at home. I didn't even bother changing as I grabbed my stuff out of my locker.
I turned around to find myself face to face with Noah. He smiled at me as I leaned back against the lockers. The werewolf smell coming off of him was so strong.
"Clement right?" He asked. "I'm Noah. I think we have history together."
He stuck out his hand, wanting me to shake it. I didn't want to, but not wanting to be rude, I reached out and shook his hand.
"Ya we do. Sorry but I should really get going. I need a shower." I tried to smile, but it came out more forced than I wanted it to be. He stepped off to the side to let me past, and I quickly grabbed my stuff and left.
I hurried out of the locker room and out to the parking lot. As I got in my car, I saw the kid that was with Noah today in class, I think he said his name was James.
As I drove home, I tried to relax. Based on what I saw today, these two new werewolf's weren't a threat. It may be beneficial to get to know them.
Once I got home I took a quick shower and put on some basketball shorts, not bothering with a shirt because it was hot. I opened the fridge and pulled out a bag of blood, poured it into a glass, and then grabbed the whiskey off of the counter, pouring it in the glass as well. I mixed it up a bit before I grabbed my phone and called my sister.
"What's up loser." She answered the phone. I smirked.
"Four hundred years and your insults are still lame," I responded, leaning back onto the counter.
"Whatever. What's up?"
"Well, school started back up today, and there are two werewolves that transferred over from another school. Did you know there was a werewolf pack near here because I didn't." I heard her sigh on the other end.
"This is what you called me to talk about? Seriously? Clement, that pack has been around since the 1600s. Remember we ran into them at our father's funeral."
"Wait, that's the same pack? I thought they would have moved by now." I took a sip of my drink, remembering the first time Valery and I had gone back to our hometown.
"Yes idiot, it's the same pack. And plus why are you so worried about it, they're probably just some teen wolves who have nothing better to do but mess around."
"Well I wouldn't be so concerned if it wasn't for the fact that one of them smells like the alphas son."
"Well that definitely may create a bit of a problem. Just don't worry. I'll be home in three days and we'll figure out whatever we need figure out."
"Ugh, fine. Miss you, can't wait to see you." I sighed. I could practically hear her smirk on the other end.
"Miss you too. See you in three days." And with that she hung up.
Putting my phone in my pocket I went over to the living room and turned on the tv. The house Valery and I had been living in for the past few years was very modern. Valery had it built before we moved back into town, and it was a lot nicer than what we grew up in.
After about an hour I got tired of scrolling through Instagram and sorta watching whatever was on the TV, so I decided to turn it off and head to bed. I took one last drink from my glass before setting it in the dishwasher.
I went upstairs to my room where I brushed my teeth and got ready for bed. There were plenty of vampire misconceptions, like the fact that we just don't sleep, or the one where we only sleep during the day. Ya, both of those are fake. Or at least sort of. Sleeping is probably one of my favorite things to do, although I only need an hour tops.
The moment I climbed into bed I felt myself begin to doze off, and before I knew it, I was fast asleep.
