Chapter 1

Raeboro, North Carolina

Shariah's POV

"Princess, come on down for breakfast!" hollered my mother from downstairs. I had on a white shirt, dark blue jeans, and my white socks. I quickly got my purple comb, and brushed my smooth, chocolate hair, long enough to reach the middle of my shirt. I applied some red lipstick, and smacked my lips to even it. With that out of the way, I trotted downstairs to the kitchen, with it's welcoming aroma of bacon and eggs with cheese.

"You need to have some shoes on, girl!" snapped my mother. "Hurry up and eat, so you can get your behind to school!"

"Yes, Ma'am!" I replied, my southern accent, strong as ever. I wolfed down my breakfast, by stuffing my mouth with both the eggs smothered with cheese, and the crispy bacon, at the same time, creating a delicious contrast in my mouth. I washed it down with some Florida's Natural orange juice. After that, I rushed upstairs, to my room, and put on my white Converse low tops, and grabbed my backpack.

Rushing back downstairs again, I got my lunch money from my mother, and she pecked a kiss on my cheek, and I walked out of my blue house, with black tinted windows, and two garages. My mother's blue 1987 Lincoln Town Car with a North Carolina license plate, stood in the driveway. My father wasn't home. He worked as a North Carolina State Trooper.

I waited outside my house, with the sun's reflection casting shadows of the southern pine trees all around my neighborhood. I whistled Thinkin Bout You, by Frank Ocean, as I waited for the big yellow vehicle.

The bus came into view, and pulled onto Fayetteville Blvd, where I lived. The bus driver used the stop sign to let drivers behind him to stop. The red lights were blinking, as I stepped on, and sat down to my best friend, Jenna May Ruffin.

"Hey, Shariah!" she said, cheerfully, her ocean blue eyes glittering my way.

"Sup, babe?" I said.

"You studied for your History exam?" asked Jenna May, as the bus was now on the move.

"Snap, I forgot!" I exclaimed, donning a facepalm.

"Mrs. Weaver was clear that getting a passing grade was critical towards the end of the semester," said Jenna May, running her fingers through her black jeans.

"I'll just study it, during Study Hall!" I stammered.

"If you say so!" chuckled Jenna May, brushing her smooth, golden blonde hair.

"Who brushes their hair on a school bus?" I snorted.

"I was in a hurry!" protested Jenna May.  "My papa always rushing me! I gotta look might purdy, don't I?"

"Want to meet at the Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, after school?" I asked.

"Maybe," replied Jenna May.

The school bus arrived at Raeford High School, and we all got off. "Y'all behave yourselves now, hear?" said the bus driver.

"Yes, sir!" I said. I walked up the steps into the big brick building, with the words Raeford High School, engraved in bold white capital letters. There was Mr. Cortez, standing in the doorway, watching everyone enter the school. I hated him so much.

"You better not do anything stupid now!" warned Mr. Cortez, glowering at me.

"Yes, sir!" I responded, shooting him a dirty look. Why does he have to get on my nerves? Like, leave me alone, dude!
