The Funeral (Part Two)
One Day Later
The second hearse pulls up to a small cemetery on the outskirts of Keystone City.
The wooden coffin is removed from the back of the hearse.
Artemis, Mr. West, Kaldur, and Barry take the right side.
Dick, Mrs. West, Conner, and Oliver line the left.
They carry the coffin to the grave, and place it on the lowering mechanism.
As 'Amazing Grace' plays and a salute is fired off, a squad of Global Privatized SEALs approaches the coffin.
One by one as the flag is folded, they each pound in the team's insignia pins; honoring their fallen brother. Their fallen commander. All-in-all, there are nearly fifteen pins lining the top of the coffin after they all file through.
As the coffin is lowered, a Global Marine hands Artemis the folded flag. The sound of Taps is heard as another salute is fired off. A five-star general approaches her and hands her a small case containing the Congressional Medal of Honor. He commends her lover for his sacrifice, as he declares his grief for her loss. On a small table to the side of the headstone, a picture of Wally is displayed. It is surrounded by more than ten medals commending his valor and sacrifice.
Mr. Graves approaches Artemis and presents her with two things. The first is a folded U.N. flag. The second is a one of a kind medal.
"This is the first ever presentation of the DeMintus Medal for Sacrifice," he tells her. "It is only issued for those that participate on off-world missions, and it is minted by a join effort between the U.N. and Global Privatized Security. Please accept this in honor of your partner's sacrifice. For ensuring the security of this world and that of her people."
After the coffin is lowered, a priest approaches the grave and gives the last rights.
The statement is short, but meaningful. It alludes to a theme of rebirth. Of life after death.
Eventually, the small crowd disperses, leaving Artemis to place a small red rose on top of headstone. She sheds a few years before being escorted away by Jade, as Richard pushes her mother's wheelchair toward the car.
Noe the cemetery is empty.
Or so one would think....
