The Funeral (Part One)
Author's note: I would just like you guys to know that this chapter and the following one will be a shot by shot reproduction of the funeral scenes from Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
In the center of the city, under the large arch, stands a small statue of the Roman God Mercury--the messenger, and the god of speed. In front of the statue, a podium and a small stage stands. Here, many prominent leaders and members of both the League and The Team will say their final goodbyes to their fallen comrade. Surrounding the arch, a large crowd has gathered and is composed of a large portion of the population of Central City.
As the hearse pulls up, the honor guard unloads. They set up their large
M119 Howitzers, and prepped to fire what were basically blank shells.
As the coffin is removed from the back of the hearse, the Marine Honor Guard hands it over to the pallbearers. These select individuals were the ones that were closest to the fallen hero. They are in turn his family.
On the right is Aqualad, Artemis, Flash, and Red Arrow. On the left is Superboy, Nightwing, Green Arrow, and Miss Martian.
As they proceed toward the statue, they are followed closely by the Queen of Vlativa, the President of the United States, several prominent leaders and figures (Lex Luthor included), and the rest of the Team and the Justice League. They march slowly to the sounds of the canons and to the song 'Amazing Grace'-- which is played by a bagpipe quartet.
The music stops when they reach the stage. Here, Kid Flash's closet friends and his mentor set his coffin on a stand that will lower it into a slot cut into the marble foundation of the arch. One by one the members of the Team and the League each file on to the stage as the prominent figures settle into their reserved seats in front of the stage.
After a brief moment of silence, Superman approaches the podium, and he begins to speak.
"We are gathered here today to honor the life of a fallen young hero. To most of us that's all he was: a titan embued with great power that he used to combat the forces of evil and villainy that threaten our world.
"But to some, he was more than just a faceless hero in a world of thousands of such brave individuals. To some, he was a friend. To some, he was like a brother. To some, he was family--a son, a neffew, a lover.
"In the end, Kid Flash died doing what he did best--saving the world. For that, we shall always be greatful.
"Farewell Kid Flash. You shall be missed dearly. And your sacrifice shall never be in vain."
At the end of the speech, the Team and Leaguers lead the crowd in saying their final good bye to the young hero. As they each pass by the open coffin, many of the crowd place items in the coffin.
Nightwing and Robin each place one of their birdarangs. Batman, a batarang. Superboy and Miss Martian place a sorrow filed farewell card. Superman places a League membership card, with Kid Flash on it. Artemis takes out one of her arrows and places it into the coffin. Queen Perdida places a sword--the same sword that he refused so many years ago. The prominent figures and world leaders place various items into the coffin. Various medals for honor, valor, and sacrifice. A folded U.S. flag. A folded U.N. flag. Gold chains with religious imagery. Mr. Graves and his son place a large engraved plaque on top of the coffin, commending him for his bravery and self-lessness.
The Flash places a small gold pocket watch inside. Inscribed on the back is a message about cherishing time.
"I wish I could have given you this in person," the Scarlet Speedster says somberly.
The rest of the crowd files past, placing rose after rose on top of the now closed coffin.
And, at long last, the steel coffin is lowered into the ground in front of the statue--as it is serenaded for the last time by a bugler playing taps.
After the crowd disperses, a construction crew removes the lowering mechanism and fills the spaces with cement. A slab of granite caps off the hole, and the Mr. Graves' plaque is pressed into the top.
When the task is complete, they remove their helmets and hum a sad tune.
As the crew leaves, a small crowd gathers on the roof of a nearby skyscraper. Here, the Rogues bow their heads and give a silent goodbye. He may have been their enemy, but he was still that bright-eyed little kid that they couldn't bring themselves to harm.
As they leave their silent vigil, Captain Boomerang can't help but notice a small flash of lightening in the distance.
