29 - Rolling In The Deep

* * *

It's been a week since filing the incident report with the police. I know I went to the police out of impulse and I regretted it the moment Drew pulled up at the station. However despite my reservations, I knew this was something that had to be done. It was like I opened up a can of worms. As soon as I arrived the cops automatically assumed I was there to give them more information about what had happened to me on that night. Yes, I probably should have told them it was Noah who did it but I hadn't. Its not like it would take a genius to see who did it, look at my arm for God's sake. As soon as Drew explained what had happened at the Cafe I was getting nervous because the last thing I wanted was for Drew to get into trouble, especially if we had a rude cop that day. He/She could easily make our lives hell. Luckily, we had an extremely understanding cop who only gave Drew the speech about how "violence is not the answer."

After filing the incident report I was ready to leave, until Detective Watson walked in. Detective Watson was the one managing my case and was investigating what happened that night. He took one look at me before directing me to his office, he wasn't too pleased to see that I tried to leave without him noticing. I took one look at Drew who only encouraged me to go in, grabbing a hold of Drew's hand I pulled him along with me. There was no way I was able to talk to Detective Watson without his support.

"Ms Winters. It's been a while." Watson said, disappointment evident in his tone.

I let out a sigh, "Sorry, Boss. Been busy."

"Too busy to help lock up your ex?" He asked as he leaned back against his chair.

I raised my eyebrow up in question, "I never gave names."

"Doesn't take a genius. However, we can't prosecute him for that night unless you identify him and yes we are running out of time." He responded.

I bit on my inner cheek as he leaned in to whisper cockily, "So, when are you going to cooperate with us? We want the same outcome, Avery. I don't take too well to guys like him who get away with their crimes because of fear."

"I am not afraid." I forced the words out in anger.

"Yes, you are. You know that you are. If you weren't, you would come in to tell us everything you know about Noah and what happened that night." He responded calmly.

I took a deep breath before exhaling angrily, I wanted nothing more than to scream and strangle someone.

"Let me help you." Watson whispered in desperation.

"Hypothetically, what would it require me to do?" I asked.

Watson smiled before answering, "Well, you come in next Friday, go through everything that happened that night, there's some holes in the story that we need to clarify-"

"I have school" I stated.

"Holes?" Drew asked in confusion at the same time as me.

"Yes, there is twenty minutes unspoken for." Watson responding to Drew. However, disregarding my comment.

I knew exactly what part he was referring to but I didn't have the stomach to say anything, so I kept my mouth shut.

"When?" Drew asked as his eyes directed towards me, before his eyes fell down to my forearm. Realisation sunk in as the anger began to settle in on his features.

"Then what?" I asked as my direction moved towards Watson.

"Then, we talk about what you know about this accident that he had several months back. We gather as much evidence against him and we start building a case. This means you will need a lawyer."

"Wait. You want me to press charges?" I asked, shock evident in my tone.

"Yes." Watson stated as a matter of fact.

I let out a chuckle before leaning back in my chair, "I'm not going on that stand to rehash out what happened to me in front of strangers."

Watson raised a hand to interrupt me, "Listen, we are getting way ahead of us. You may not even need to take the stand or potentially press charges. Just, come in next week and we'll take it one step at a time."

This entire conversation had happened because of one stupid incident report, that I now wish I hadn't raised. This incident report had opened a can of worms for me, because I know the cops won't stop hounding me until I came back to the station.

Now, here I was a week later on a school day sitting with Watson as I rehashed out my story, over and over again. The only reason I actually made it to the station was because Drew forced me. By force, I mean he came into my house, got me out of bed and drove me here. As much as I love him, it angered me. Mainly because the cops made me go through everything that happened, what was I wearing that night, what was Noah wearing that night, who knew about my whereabouts, why were our bags packed, who was the first person to locate me, who did Noah speak to on the phone and my favourite one; what did Noah use to carve his name into my arm.

Two hours later and I felt the suddenly urge to throw up, every time I thought about that night it made me sick to my stomach. I'd do anything to be able to forget about what happened that night.

"What are you trying him for?" I asked.

"Kidnapping, Conspiracy to commit murder, Aggravated Assault, Hit and Run. But that all depends." Watson responded almost instantly.

"On what?" I asked

"What kind of lawyer you get." He stated.

The word murder immediately made my stomach turn. It was so surreal, I felt like all of this was happening so suddenly and I couldn't stop it. I just wanted to press pause on my life for a few minutes.

"Why does it depend on the lawyer I get?"

"They might find other information that could add to his charges." Watson stated as a matter of fact.

I let out a chuckle as I shook my head.

"What?" Watson asked as he raised his eyebrow at me.

I looked between Drew and Watson, "I can't afford a lawyer."

"Let me talk to-"

I quickly raised my hand to interrupt Drew, "Dont even finish that sentence."

Drew let out an angry sigh, "Let him help you."

"I don't need his help!" I whispered angrily.

"I thought you two buried the hatchet?" Drew asked, folding his arms over his chest.

"We had one conversation. Doesn't mean shit, Drew." I said.

"Let's just refocus at the task at hand." Watson said as he stood up. I watched him as he walked around his desk to stand behind us. We both turned to face him and at this point I noticed the large whiteboard. He pressed a button and it slowly began to move, showing photos of everyone linked to Noah. It was a crime board that had markings and writings all over it.

"What the hell is this?" Drew asked.

"Everything that we have on Noah at the moment." Watson stated as he looked at me. My eyes kept moving between all the photos of people I recognised, his parents, Isaac, Jaxon's Dad and of course a photo of me.

"What do you know about the night of the accident?" Watson asked.

I bit onto my lower lip as I tried to think of the words, I had to be careful with what I said. There was no way in hell I was going to drag Isaac into this, "Not much really. He mentioned an accident that he had but that's as far as it went. I didn't know the extent of it, I didn't know someone died as a result."

"Or that he had been drinking?" Watson accused.

"No." I stated.

"Why didn't you question him?" Watson asked.

I laughed bitterly, "You clearly don't know Noah that well. You don't question someone like him."

"Piece of shit." Drew mumbled under his breath.

I raised my eyebrow in challenge at Drew who only smiled sheepishly at me, "Sorry. The guy makes my blood boil."

"Was anyone with him that night?"

My eyes involuntarily looked at Drew before refocusing on Watson as I shook my head in denial.

"Are we done here?" I asked.

Watson let out a sigh as he looked at his watch, "For now. We will keep in contact if there is anything else we need. Thank you for your cooperation, Avery."

I let out a sigh, "Yeah. No probs."

I grabbed my bag and jacket before following Drew to the front door.

"Avery?"

I looked up and didn't see anyone, as I turned my head to the right there they both were, standing at the front desk. My face turned white as the blood rushed through my body.

'What the hell were they doing here?'

"Mr and Mrs Daniels?!" I asked as shock settled in. I couldn't believe Noah's parents were here. They had been so good to me, almost treated me like their own. Seeing them made me want to hug them but they probably hated me. After all, I was helping the police gather evidence against their son.

"Come here, honey." Noah's Mum, Janet called out as she opened her arms for me. Immediately I smiled as I took a few steps closure to embrace her.

Wh-What are you guys doing here?" I asked as the fear set in.

"They want us to answer some questions about Noah." Noah's Dad; Luke responded.

The smile drained from my face as the guilt took over my features. The fact that they had to drive all the way down because of my big mouth was enough to bring tears to my eyes.

"Dear, don't cry." Janet whispered as she hugged me.

"I'm so sorry." I whispered, my voice shaky as she hugged me.

Luke stood close as he patted my back gently, "This isn't your fault. Don't you dare apologise for my moronic son."

Janet cupped my cheeks with her palms and forced me to look at her, "If Anything. We owe you the apology. We had no idea what he was doing. We should have known. Should have stopped him."

I shook my head in denial, "You both have been nothing but amazing to me. I feel so guilty for dragging you into this."

"Why didn't you tell us? I would have given him an old school beating, I tell ya." Janet stated.

I chuckled lightly as I let out a sigh, "I guess I thought I could handle it."

"Mr and Mrs Daniels?" Watson spoke up as he came out from his office.

"I better let you guys go." I said, squeezing Janet's hand.

"Take care of yourself." Luke spoke up as he patted my shoulder before walking through. Janet gave me one last hug before following her husband.

I watched them both hold hands as they walked into his office together. Watching the way they both communicated in life made me believe that there were still good men out there. It reminded me that not everyone was like Noah. It wasn't fair to put them all in the one basket, I see that now. Seeing Noah's Dad made me realise it. Noah was nothing like his dad, looks maybe but personality wise; he was nothing like his parents.

As Drew drove me home I couldn't help but think of my relationship with Noah and then compare it to Jaxon. They both were so different. They both had a temper at times but they were always in different directions. Noah's anger would always be towards his friends and I. Jaxon's anger was always to the person who upset his friends.... or me.

Jaxon has never treated me the way Noah has, has definitely not gotten violent with me and has always has good intentions when it came to me, as a person.

Letting out a shaky breath, I unlocked my phone as I searched for my last message with Jaxon to send him a message.

Fri, June 10, 01:30 PM
Me: Hey. So I was thinking... Is the date still on offer?"

Fri, June 10, 01:32 PM
Jaxon: It never had an expiry date.

Fri, June 10, 01:33 PM
Me: I'd love to go out on a date with you.

Fri, June 10, 01:33 PM
Jaxon: Music to my ears. I'll pick you up tomorrow 7:00pm. How does that sound?

Fri, June 10, 01:34 PM
Me: Perfect.
