Garrett P.O.V
I rang the doorbell as I arrived at Dalton's house. "I'll get it" I heard Dalton's voice from inside as he came towards the front door while I awaited with a small pan of peach cobbler in my hand. A wide smile crossed his face when he saw it was me.
"Hey, I'm glad you made it" he said.
"I told you, I'd be here" I said smiling back at him before handing him the pan of peach cobbler as he let me inside.
"Wow your house is so nice" I remarked.
"What can I say? My dad keeps the house at it's best" he said before leading me to the living room where both his parents were.
"Dad, Papi this is Garrett" he said as he introduced me.
"Hi Garrett, nice to have you in our home. I'm Dalton's dad, Dakota" Dalton's dad said before he got up to shake my hand.
"Hi Garrett, nice to meet you. I'm Dalton's Papi, Antonio. Feel free to make yourself at home" Dalton's papi said as he shook my hand.
"He brought peach cobbler" Dalton stated.
"You didn't have to" Dakota said shyly.
"It's fine. I wanted to" I said while smiling at him.
"So are you guys ready for lunch?" Dakota asked and although I was a bit famished I was a bit shy to say yes but I didn't have to....
"I'm starving" Dalton said.
"You're always hungry" Dakota teased before we all headed to the dining room where lunch was already set on the table. Dakota then began dishing it out for us.
"I wasn't sure what you'd like so I prepared lasagna with a special marinara sauce I learned to make from my parents. It comes all the way back from my ancestors in Italy" Dakota explained as I listened a bit intrigued by him.
"So are you Italian?" I asked, my southern accent beginning to show.
"I'm half Italian half Caucasian. Are you Southern?" He asked clearly detecting my southern accent.
"Yes sir I am. I'm from Alabama" I said.
"I'm Cuban in case you were wondering" Antonio stated.
"Oh that's nice. I've never been to Cuba but I've heard it's very beautiful" I said.
"It is. He's taken us several times" Dalton said.
"You're so lucky" I said picking at my lasagna and it's not that it wasn't tasty but rather because I envied Dalton a bit for having such a great life. I know I shouldn't but his life seems so much better than mines.
"Maybe we can take you with us sometime" Antonio offered.
"My dad won't let me" I blurted out.
"I hate the fact that he controls everything about you" Dalton said a bit frustrated and I felt his frustration.
"Calm down hijo" Antonio said as Dalton took a deep breath.
"So does your dad let you go anywhere at all?" Dakota asked a bit concerned.
"Yea a few places. It's not that he's trying to control my life as much as it's him being overprotective" I explained.
"So why is he overprotective?" Dalton asked.
"I honestly don't know. He just is." I said.
"And your mother?" Antonio asked as sadness flooded my body and my mood dropped completely.
"My mama.....she ummm...." I began but hesitated.
"It's ok Garrett, you don't have to tell us if you don't want to" Dakota said as he placed a hand of comfort on my back.
"No it's fine. My mama's....dead" I said and although it's been years the pain of losing her still felt fresh.
"I'm so sorry if I hurt you by asking" Antonio said genuinely.
"No of course not. It's a natural part of life really" I said reassuring him he had done no wrong.
"I'm sorry to hear about that" Dalton said as he smiled and hugged me and although I would normally avoid his touch, I felt as though I needed that hug and I guess maybe I was getting soft a bit when it came to him.
"We're all sorry to hear and if you ever need to talk to anyone, we're all here" Dakota said as he smiled at me warmly.
"You're even more beautiful than our son described though, so my question is do you like our son?" Antonio asked as he watched with one eyebrow raised.
"I mean he's a great friend" I said trying to dodge the question a bit.
"Well that's a start but do you think you two can move past the friendzone?" Antonio asked which made me embarassed because I honestly didn't know how to respond.
"Toni, would you leave him alone if he loves Dalton then it'll come naturally from him, besides they don't even know each other that well" Dakota said defending me which I appreciated. I know Antonio was just looking out for his son but boy did that question take me by surprise.
"I really would like to get to know you more" Dalton whispered to me as I gave him a small smile. I honestly didn't know how to feel about that.
"So Garrett, what's Alabama like?" Dakota asked genuinely intrigued.
"It's nice. Completely opposite to the city though" I explained.
"Do you miss back home?" Antonio asked.
"Sometimes but I've gotten over my home sickness now" I explained.
"So Garrett, how old are you?" Dakota asked.
"I'm seventeen. I'll be eighteen next year" I explained.
"Same here" Dalton said excitedly.
"When's your birthday?" Dalton asked.
"April" I replied.
"I'm January. You gotta respect your elders kiddo" he teased.
"So how about I cut into your peach cobbler?" Dakota asked as he got up and started to collect the dirty dishes.
"Let me help you" I said getting up to help Dakota before he stopped me.
"No sweetie it's fine. You're a guest in our home. I'll take care of it" he said with such a warm smile before he went to the kitchen before returning with four dishes of peach cobbler in a tray.
"This looks great" Dalton complimented me as Dakota set the peach cobbler in front of him.
"You said it hijo" Antonio chimed in.
"You need to give me the recipe for this" Dakota said after only his first bite.
"It's nothing special. Just something my mama taught me" I said modestly.
"Sweetie, this is something special. I've had peach cobbler but not this good" Dakota said continuing to eat with satisfaction in every bite.
"It's as sweet as you" Dalton said as I rolled my eyes at how cringe he was being.
"Hijo, you've got some of the most cringe pick up lines I've ever heard. No wonder you've been friendzoned" Antonio teased and I couldn't help but smile. It's almost like he read my mind.
"I haven't been friendzoned, well......yet" he said while looking into my eyes trying to discern if I had feelings for him before I looked away.
Dalton is a great guy but right now I don't know how I actually feel for him at this moment. I don't know if I even want a relationship. It's like I'm an emotional wreck. God please help me out of this trial.
DALTON P.O.V
After wishing goodbye to both my parents I escorted Garrett outside to his van.
"I'm so glad you came" I said once more.
"I told you I would" Garrett said as he rolled his eyes.
"So....I hope you enjoyed today" I said a bit nervously.
"I did....a lot actually" he admitted.
"So does that mean....." I hesitated.
"Dalton, we can go on a date. It's fine" he said and I felt I can actually breathe again.
"You know I really care for you" I said as I looked into his eyes and we locked eyes for a few seconds before he replied.
"Ummm....I better get going" he said as he flashed me a small smile.
"See you on Monday?" I asked.
"Sure" was all he said before we wished each other goodbye. He then got in his van and drove off.
