hayleyobrien best friend appreciation post because it's extremely overdue! so sometime last year liv and i went down to the studio and spent that night and the next day writing a super, SUPER special song called volcano that is on her debut album. this song means the absolute fucking world to me and i honestly can't not cry whenever i hear it.

she knows how much i love her so i don't need to keep going, BUT she's going on tour in april so if you haven't already bought tickets you need to go get them now or i'll haunt you forever 👻 who knows, you might walk away from it even more emotionally damaged than before 🫶🏻

BEING IN A CROWD OF thousands of fans that are also passionate about the music you love will never get tiring. Sure, performing a show for people provokes a feeling that Hayley can't describe, but getting to actually experience music for herself will never be something that becomes boring. It's not the same as it used to be, though. She's recognised by everyone, especially when she's the opener for the artist they're here to see, or occasionally asked to take photos with them mid-song.

Even though there are a few changes, being able to see Billie up close like everyone else instead of from afar in a private room makes her feel incredibly grateful. When she's absorbed into the performance and its music, she feels normal for a second. She doesn't feel like someone that is semi-famous. She feels like all the rest of the people that are shoved in the pit around her. They're all there for Billie Eilish. And at the end of the day, so is she.

Being the tenth show into the tour, Hayley had started to get used to the experience of immersing herself with the fans. Tonight is different. There's more security around her than usual, all closely keeping an eye on her as if something would go wrong, and people are zooming their cameras in from every angle of the arena. It's different because Taylor had insisted on being up close with her. Hayley thought it would be pure chaos. But it turns out that as much as the fans around them do love Taylor, they're not there to see her. After a photo and a few murmurs, they return their eyes to the stage. So does Hayley.

Madison Square Garden is filled with just under twenty-seven thousand people. Every single person follows the movements of the girl on stage, her bright smile visible from the dozens of lights placed on her. And then the entire building suddenly goes dark, and the arena erupts with screams and cheers. Hayley grins. The acoustic set is her favourite part of the show. She watches the faint silhouettes of the crew hurriedly drag chairs into the centre of the stage, positioning guitars and microphones up for both Billie and Finneas.

Slowly, a spotlight turns on, showing Billie taking the guitar from one of the crew. Hayley's brows furrow. Taylor spots her confused expression and leans closer to her to speak over the deafening noise around them. "Are you okay?"

The twenty year old quickly smiles at her. "Yeah, all good." But as Taylor is tapped on the shoulder by one of her security to get a photo for a fan, Hayley looks back to the stage and the smile slips down into a frown. Finneas isn't there.

Billie shifts the microphone around and lowers the stand slightly. "We okay in here?" she calls out. Hayley watches her grin at the thousands of screaming voices replying to her. "Okay, so," she clears her throat, "My best friend is on tour with me!" Hayley shakes her head with a wide smile as she locks eyes with Billie. "She's the sweetest fucking person and she means the world to me. Just a few hours ago, one of her songs hit a billion streams." Hayley can't hear the screaming anymore; she can only hear Billie's voice. "And she was pretty annoyed when I told her I wanted to celebrate it... but obviously we're going to do that no matter what she says."

Hayley's eyes widen as she catches the crew lifting a familiar red piano up onto the stage. She begins to realise why there's only one guitar and one chair.

"Get up here, ice-cube."

Hayley O'Brien stares at her in surprise. She feels Taylor nudge her side and then security are ushering her out of the pit and around the barricade. She's handed her SpongeBob earpieces, and she has to smile as she walks up the stairs to join her friend on stage. With a hand shielding her eyes form the suddenly blinding white light, Hayley turns around to look at the crowd and hears them cheer as she waves.

As Billie pulls her into a hug, they both take on of their ears out to be able to have a conversation that the arena can't hear. "I can't believe you did this," Hayley whispers, gently shoving the girl's shoulder.

A short giggle leaves her lips. "Had to," Billie replies. She nods her head over to the keyboard. "Go on, superstar."

Hayley raises her brows. "What are we playing?" Billie raises a single finger, and she smiles.

The crowd falls silence as they both set themselves up with their respective instruments. Hayley takes a deep breath and places her fingers onto the keys of the piano. She glances to the side to look at Billie, and as they lock eyes, she starts the song that changed her life.
