AFTER HAVING TWO weeks off from performing, Hayley finds herself itching to get back on the stage. Which is slightly strange because for so long she had experienced crippling anxiety in regard to large crowds. But it's something about knowing that she's there to sing for Billie that makes it easier. As she looks out to the thousands of empty chairs, the lights illuminate the features on her face as she smiles. Even though it's only a soundcheck and there is no crowd before her, she feels that warm, happy buzz in her stomach. It's intoxicating. It's addicting. Knowing that her music is affecting so many people and impacting their lives in a positive way makes her feel like she's achieved everything she wanted to in life. She feels fulfilled.

She sits at the end of the stage in her sweats, microphone hovering before her lips, and drums her fingers against the floor. She tries to focus on the song she'll be performing for the first time tonight, but all she can think about is Billie. "I guess I'm just difficult, difficult." The lighting suddenly disappears, and she sighs as she forces herself to stand up.

"All good, Hayley," one of the crew calls out, giving her a smile and thumbs up.

"Thanks!" As her eyes flick around the arena, she tries to find the familiar mop of dark hair in one of the thousands of seats. Without fail, Billie had so far been to every single one of her sound checks, and Hayley had been to every single one of hers. But today she can't find her. She grabs her phone and quickly calls her friend.

Billie answers on the first dial and immediately asks, "Oh, my God, did I miss it?" Her voice is full of disappointment and panic. "You finished, didn't you?"

Hayley jogs down the stairs attached to the stage and begins the walk through the labyrinth of corridors inside the arena. "Yeah, but it's okay," she reassures. Her lips dip into a frown. "Is everything okay?" She hears two voices talking quickly in hushed whispers, but she can't make out what they're saying.

There's rustling on the other side of the phone. "Yeah! Yeah, sorry, I was talking with Finn and got distracted, I'm so sorry." She pauses for a second. "Did it go okay?"

Hayley pokes her head into one of the green rooms but closes the door when she finds it empty. "Yeah, all good, we went through 'Difficult.'"

Billie groans in frustration. "Are you kidding me," she mutters. "But at least tonight I'll be able to hear it properly."

She nods and stuffs one of her hands into the pocket of her hoodie. "You sure you're ok, B?"

"Yeah, I swear I'm good, I just got distracted." Another room. It's empty again. "I gotta go, but I'll come find you in a minute, okay?"

"All good, see you." So Hayley brings the phone down from her ear, assuming that Billie had been the one to end the call. However, just as she starts to stuff her phone back into her pocket, she hears sound emanating from the speakers. Presuming that Billie is trying to talk to her, Hayley brings it back up to her ear. "Hey, are you-"

"You really want to do it tonight?" It's Finneas.

Billie hesitates for a second. "Yeah, yeah, tonight," she says confidently.

"Okay, then we gotta cut one from the acoustic set. Actually, if we cut 'Male Fantasy' in half then we'll be okay for timing."

Hayley knows that she shouldn't be listening to the conversation, so she decides to be the one to properly hang up. And then she hears her name; well, it's not actually her name. She stops walking and leans against the wall.

"'Halley's Comet,' then 'Male Fantasy,' then 'Your Power,'" Finneas concludes. "Sound good?"

"Yeah, sounds good."

"You know Hay will hear it, right?"

"No shit, dumbass."

"And you know because she's gonna be hearing it, she's probably gonna put two and two together. The song's about her."

Hayley's eyes widen and she unconsciously clutches the phone tighter. She feels her heart racing, but she's not exactly sure why. She doesn't even know what the song is about. But it's named after her. Billie Eilish had written a song about her. 

"Yeah, I know. But I just can't keep holding it together anymore, Finn. I love her."

And she feels everything stop moving. Hayley promptly ends the call and races through the halls, trying to find anyone that might have a clue where the black-haired girl may be. Eventually she runs into Maggie who tells her, confused as to why she is so frantic, that Billie is in one of the green rooms at the opposite side of the arena. With her heart pounding in her ears, Hayley walks as fast as she can, dodging people that give her strange looks as she passes by.

She's confused, shocked, and beyond terrified. But all of the emotions rushing through her feel... right.

When she finally turns the corner, her eyes catch Finneas leaving the small room. He's walking in the opposite direction to her, so he doesn't see her coming. There's no way for Billie to know she's coming. She's coming out of the blue.

Hayley O'Brien wrenches open the door and lets it slam onto the adjoining wall behind. Billie spins around in surprise but lets out a soft laugh when she realises who it is. "Hey, how'd you know where I was?" Her face quickly falls when she takes in the girl's expression. She takes a step toward Hayley, brows drawn together in concern. "Is everything okay?"
